Syria's ally Russia today warned of "consequences" after US-led strikes on the country in response to a suspected chemical attack.

He also said that "insulting the President of Russia was "unacceptable and inadmissible".

"The worst apprehensions have come true. Our warnings have been left unheard. A predesigned scenario has been implemented. Again, we are being threatened. We warned that such action will not be left without consequences. All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris. Insulting the President of Russia is unacceptable and inadmissible. The US -- the possessor of the biggest arsenal of chemical weapons -- has no moral right to blame other countries," the Russian envoy said in the statement.

US President Donald Trump on Friday ordered precision strikes targeting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's chemical weapons capabilities after a weekend poison gas attack that killed at least 60 people on April 7.

The operation was backed by France and Britain.
