Monsoon update: Orange alert issued in Mumbai after city witnesses 50 mm rain in three hours

The Indian financial capital, Mumbai,woke up to water-logged streets after heavy rains lashed in the early hours of Thursday(Jul18).Over the last two days, the city witnessedlight showers, however,this morning the rainsintensified.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane, but after the financial capital recorded a rainfall of 100 mm, IMD updated the alert to orange.

The data shared by the weather department for Wednesday and Thursday morning records 101 mm of rain at the Colaba Coastal Observatory and 50 mm of rainfall at the Santacruz station.

“There is a fully developed low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal which is resulting in increased rain activity. In light of this development, we have sounded an orange alert today while a yellow alert with a rainfall warning has been issued for tomorrow (Friday),” Sushma Nair, IMD Mumbai scientist, told The Indian Express.

The Colaba station recorded 50 mm of rain between 5:30 am (local time)and 8:30 am on Thursday.

Monsoon forecast for Maharashtra

The weather department has issued an orange alert forKolhapur, Raigad, and other southern districts of Maharashtra, as heavy rainfall activity is expected.

The IMD has also issued a red alert for Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra from July 18 to 20 and an orange alert for the regions on July 21 and 22. Vidarbha has also been placed under a red alertfor July 19 and an orange alert for July 18 and 20.

An orange alert has been issued for Marathwada for July 20.

Forecast for other states

Heavy rains are predicted by the weather department in Telangana andAndhra Pradesh for the next two to threedays. Therefore, the states have been placed undera red alert.

A red alert has also been issued for Chhattisgarh on July 19. Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for Odisha from July 18 to 20 and East Madhya Pradesh from July 20 and 21.

The IMD has forecasted light to moderate rain in Delhi for July 18. Thunderstorms are also possible in the Indian national capital. The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 36 degrees Celsius and the minimum is expected to be around 25 degrees Celsius.
