An Indian Air Force aircraft crashed at the Air Force Station in Assam’s Jorhat. The IAF confirmed that five personnel on board were killed. The aircraft involved in the incident was an AN-31 cargo plane, which is used to transport supplies. The accident happened when the plane was attempting to land at the airbase.
ANI reported that firefighting operations were underway at the site of the accident. Footage from the scene showed the wreckage of the plane with smoke rising in the air.
In a statement, the Indian Air Force confirmed the incident. “An IAF An-32 aircraft met with an accident today while landing at Jorhat,” the IAF posted in a post on X. “A court of inquiry is being constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident.”
Five IAF personnel killed
In another post, the IAF expressed sorrow over the loss of five personnel. “The Indian Air Force deeply regrets the loss of five personnel in the An-32 accident at Jorhat, Assam.”
“Sqn Ldr Prashant Singh, Flt Lt Shubham Kumar, Sgt Jitendra Sharma, Agniveervayu Khemaram Kumawat and Agniveervayu Danish Alam made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty,” it added.
“IAF extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and stands firmly with them in this hour of grief,” the IAF said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed deep anguish over the incident.

“Deeply anguished by the loss of five Air Warriors in the An-32 accident at Jorhat, Assam,” he wrote on X. “Sqn Ldr Prashant Singh, Flt Lt Shubham Kumar, Sgt Jitendra Sharma, Agniveervayu Khemaram Kumawat and Agniveervayu Danish Alam made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. Their courage and service to the nation will always be remembered with pride and gratitude.”
“My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The nation stands firmly with them in this hour of grief,” the minister added.
The Antonov AN-32, a twin-engine military transport aircraft, has long been one of the Indian Air Force’s most dependable aircraft. Developed in the former Soviet Union to meet India’s operational needs, the aircraft is widely used for troop movement, logistics and supply missions, particularly in challenging terrain. The IAF is believed to operate around 100 AN-32 aircraft, making it a key component of its transport fleet.
The latest incident follows another fatal Air Force crash in Assam earlier this year. In March, two IAF pilots lost their lives after a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet went down in the Karbi Anglong district. The aircraft had departed from Jorhat Air Force Station on a routine training mission but lost contact with air traffic controllers shortly after take-off. Search teams later located the wreckage in a remote mountainous region about 60 kilometres from Jorhat, confirming the crash.
