Gujarat rains: Several incidents of crocodiles entering residential areas reported in Vadodara

Crocodile spotted in Vadodara

Amid the flooding situation in the Indian state of Gujarat, videos of crocodiles entering residential colonies in Vadodara have surfaced on social media, as the rising water level in the Vishwamitri River threatens the nearby regions.

Incessant rain in the state has wreaked havoc on the residents, causing many areas to getwaterlogged and flooded. While the water itself is a threat to the people, it also brought crocodiles into the city of Vadodara, raising alarm amongthe locals.

Several incidents have been reported of crocodiles entering residential areas near the Vishwamitri River. The river has reached a water level of 35 feet, flooding the adjacent areas.

A video shared on X shows a giant crocodile striding near the riverfront in Vadodara.

In a separate video, a crocodile can be seen on the roof of a house in the Akota Stadium area, as the low-lying region remains submerged in water.

A massive crocodile was also rescued from the campus of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Vadodara. The 11-foot mugger crocodile strutted into the university from the Vishwamitri River.

"We have rescued 10 crocodiles in the last five days. Two have been released and eight are still with us. We will release them when the water level of the river decreases," an official told news agencyANI.

The river is home to about 300 crocodiles and passes through the city of Vadodara. At least 21 crocodiles were rescued in the city last month.

The Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local authorities have been actively conducting relief and rescue operations in the affected areas of the state. At least 28 people have lost their lives due to rain-related incidents, while 17,800 have been evacuated from flood-affected areas in Gujarat.
