Delhi court grants bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in excise policy case

A Delhi Court on Thursday (Jun 20) granted bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the money laundering case connected to the alleged liquor policy scam on a bail bond of ₹1,00,000 ($1,195.74). Vacation Judge Nyay Bindu of Rouse Avenue Courts passed the order after reserving it earlier today.
After the announcement, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) requested that the signing of the bail bond be deferred by 48 hours so that the order may be challenged before the appellate court. But the judge refused to stay the order and the trial court added that the bail bond is to be produced before the duty judge on Friday.
The decision comes a day after Kejriwal's judicial custody was extended till July 3 by the Rouse Avenue Court.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) SV Raju, appearing for the ED, submitted that co-accused Chanpreet Singh received huge cash amounts from entrepreneurs and paid hotel bills for Kejriwal's stay. The counsel claimed that the investigation by ED is based on concrete evidence.
"Kejriwal says my phone is sacrosanct. Mai password nahi dunga. (I will not give my password). We had to resort to the phone of Vinod Chauhan. He is sitting quiet. Many times it has happened that accused says I will not... An adverse inference has to be drawn from the fact that Kejriwal has refused to give his password. This is a ground for refusing bail under ordinary bail law, forget section 45 PMLA for the time being," ASG said.

Meanwhile, senior advocate Vikram Chaudhari appearing for Kejriwal, dismissed all the claims and again highlighted lack of evidence in the case. Chaudhari again asked why Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 and questionedwhether or not ED was playing in the hands of some "political masters".
Arvind Kejriwal's arrest
The Aam Admi Party (AAP) supremo was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a case pertaining to alleged corruption and money laundering in formulating and executing the Delhi government's excise policy.
He was released on bail for a brief period during the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections and addressed several public gatherings while campaigning for AAP before going back to prison a couple of days before the counting of votes on June 4.
The Delhi government had implemented the policy on November 17, 2021. But it was scrapped at the end of September 2022. Corruption allegations have been levelled against the party, which AAP denies.
