Hundreds of children are admitted to hospitals -- mostly at Muzaffarpur's SKMCH for treatment of AES which is characterized by sudden onset of high fever and convulsions.

The Bihar health department had on Thursday released state-wide figures putting the total toll following the outbreak, which has spread across 16 districts, at 139.

To accommodate the rising number of encephalitis patients, SKMCH in Muzaffarpur has converted prisoners' ward into an ICU.

Encephalitis is a viral infection, which causes mild flu-like symptoms such as a fever or a headache.
