FIFA has received massive backlash over its latest proposal to sell off part of its World Cup business to private investors, with UEFA, AFC and the English FA coming down hard on football’s governing body. On Tuesday, FIFA said it would retain a majority share in FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) but hoped to raise $4.2 billion later this year by 'carefully selecting long-term investors who will purchase minority, non-controlling interests'. Several reports suggest that the FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, also sent a letter to all associations, saying that they will pocket $40 million for backing this plan, but must sign up by September 19. "In total for the upcoming cycle starting as of January 1, 2027, each member association will have the possibility of access up to $40 million per member association under this proposal," said Infantino. The Times, which broke the story first on Tuesday, said the sources opposed the plan and labelled it ‘pure bribery’. While UEFA issued a blunt statement regarding this proposed plan and was due to hold an emergency meeting later on Wednesday, the English FA and Asian football body condemned this idea, fearing the worst for the most-loved global sport. Also read| Look Away Real Madrid Fans: Bayern CEO dismisses Olise transfer, brands Diaz sale ‘Foolish’ "Many in European football see FIFA's plans as an outright attack on football. Zinedine Zidane has been appointed as France's new head coach, succeeding Didier Deschamps, the French Football Federation (FFF) announced on Tuesday (July 28). Widely touted to replace the outgoing Deschamps, who took over in 2012 and helped the national team win its second FIFA World Cup six years later in 2018, Zidane said, "this is the only job" he wanted. Zidane, 54, had long been viewed as the leading candidate for the role and had been waiting for an opportunity to take charge of the national team for several years. Meanwhile, Deschamps’ last assignment, the concluded World Cup in North America, saw France finish fourth after losing 6-4 to England in the third-place playoff. Earlier, France lost to the eventual winners, Spain, in the first semifinal. "For me, it's an immense joy... being able to become the coach of this French team. At Madrid, he achieved an unprecedented record in the competition’s modern era – winning Champions League titles in three consecutive years (2016, 2017 and 2018). "I think it's a completely different job, that's for sure," said Zidane. I don't have any other words," said Zidane, who signed a four-year contract. "I'm holding myself back because I have so many emotions inside me. I'm ready for the challenge, that's what drives me today." "The France job was the only one I wanted," Zidane said at his unveiling in Paris. "I've had offers over these four or five years to take charge of a club, and I turned them all down for the French national team." The former playmaker, who played for several top clubs across Europe during his playing days, has coached only one club, Real Madrid, across two different stints. At Madrid, he achieved an unprecedented record in the competition’s modern era – winning Champions League titles in three consecutive years (2016, 2017 and 2018). "I think it's a completely different job, that's for sure," said Zidane. "I've experienced the club side of it. Now this is something new for me, but it doesn't scare me." 1998 Ballon d’Or winner Zinedine Zidane follows in the footsteps of former international team-mates Laurent Blanc, who coached the national side from 2010 to 2012, and Deschamps. "I'm going to give everything so that this team keeps on winning. That's it, the only thing that drives me is being able to work for this France team and making sure it keeps on winning. "'DD' (Deschamps) is 'DD', Blanc was Blanc and 'Zizou' is 'Zizou'. "I will do things the way I know how to do them,” said France’s new head coach. Meanwhile, Zidane's first game as France’s head coach will be an away match against Turkey in the UEFA Nations League on September 25. His first match at home will be against Italy at the Stade de France on October 2.

Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala has aplogised to Spain's Dani Almo for punching him after the FIFA 2026 final on Sunday (Jul 19). This came after the Argentine players lost their cool and clashed with Spain players after the defending champions lost the final 1-0 in extra time. The FIFA, sports governing body, has also launched a probe into the matter. Meanwhile, Enzo Fernandez, who was red carded in the final, has also issued a statement on the incident and apologised for his actions.
Argentina assistant coach apologises for punching Almo
After the final whistle, scuffle broke out between Argentina and Spanish players with the losing team players and Ayala was then seen joining the clash and punching Almo. The Spanish player, however, did not hit back in reaction."Obviously I’m sorry. Because of my position, I can’t allow a feeling, or what I might receive from the other party, to change my mood and my actions. I’m sorry, but for me, these are things that stay there and that’s it," said Ayala to Esports Migdia."For me, things need to be put behind us and left there. It was more of a push than anything else, it wasn’t a punch like they’re saying, and that’s it. It was a reaction to something he said, but that’s it. If I see him, I’ll obviously apologise to him in person."It’s a shame, and you have to accept the facts and the things you’ve done on the field. When the game ends, what I see is a fight in the middle of the pitch, and we rush to go after our players, and it ends up like that because that’s not who we are."I take responsibility for what I did. My intention was to go and separate them, that was my intention, but sometimes things happen and emotions run high, but that’s no excuse. And given my position, my behaviour has to be different, regardless of what I receive," he added.
Is FIFA taking any action?
FIFA has launched an investigation into Argentina players for starting up the melee post World Cup 2026 final. A disciplinary committee will be taking a call on the next steps once the probe is complete. The players involved as well as the organization might be reprimanded for their actions.

Rodri lifts trophy upon landing as world champions Spain touch down in Madrid

FIFA has opened an investigation into the ugly post-match brawl between Argentine and Spanish players, leading to chaos on the pitch. Seconds after the referee blew the final whistle, with Spain standing tall against the defending champions, disturbing scenes broke out as several Argentine players began throwing punches and pushing the Spanish players in frustration, with heavy sanctions looming over them. Among those likely to face punishments are Argentina’s fullback Nahuel Molina, midfielder Leandro Paredes and assistant coach Roberto Ayala. Spain won their second World Cup title by beating Argentina in extra time on Sunday in New Jersey, thanks to a Ferran Torres strike in the 106th minute. While Spain played the best football for a team in a World Cup, Argentina, on the other hand, played the worst – failing to register a single shot on target throughout regulation time. Spain kept possession, had the higher ball control percentage and never allowed Argentina’s ageing squad to find a gap or a loophole for an attack. Such was Spain’s performance that even Argentina’s best player and captain, Lionel Messi, failed to leave a mark in what is assumed to be his final World Cup match. Also read| 2026 World Cup Winners: Why Spain are football’s most decorated team since 2000 Evidently, the frustration piled up for Argentine players, who turned Spain’s jubilation into an ugly spectacle by throwing punches and insults at their Spanish counterparts. While Messi stood alone soaking in this moment of despair, his teammate Molina apparently punched Spain captain Rodri. The Manchester City star stopped to confront the fullback, who, soon after, squared up to the Ballon d’Or winner and bumped him in the chest, triggering wild scenes at the MetLife Stadium. On the other hand, Paredes, who was shown a yellow card earlier during the game and seemed to have escaped another one, punched the Spanish defender Eric García in his throat before Argentina’s manager Lionel Scaloni rushed to the scene to separate the two. The midfielder, however, did not stop there. Seconds later, he released his frustration on Gavi by throwing the midfielder to the ground and later shoving him in the face. Paredes then grabbed another player’s bibs to make things worse. Meanwhile, Paredes was reportedly shown a red card for his wild reaction to the World Cup final loss, which could lead to a lengthy ban due to the nature of his sending off. On the other hand, Enzo Fernandez, who was sent off for two yellow cards, is now facing disciplinary action. FIFA has now launched an investigation into the unsavoury scenes and could punish Argentina’s FA for failing to keep its players in check.

Spain beat Argentina to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America. They not only became the world champions with that but also the most successful, highly decorated national team since the start of the millennium. Spain now has two FIFA World Cup titles, as many as France and Uruguay, adding a UEFA Nations League title (2023), an Olympic gold (2024) and the Euros in the same year, winning all three major tournaments since 2022. Contrary to the usual halftime break in a football match, which lasts for just 15 minutes, this edition’s final between Argentina and Spain could have a mid-break for as long as half an hour – the longest halftime in the tournament's history. It is because of a first-ever 11-minute Super-Bowl style halftime show, including pop stars Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber and K-pop boy band BTS, which will take place during the final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Setting up the stage, an 11-minute performance, and later dismantling it would require around 25 minutes or perhaps a bit more before the second half resumes. Although FIFA claims that the halftime show's duration will not exceed 17 minutes, it is understood that the timeframe could stretch beyond that. Should the break be extended, the players could be involved in some warm-ups. Also read| Experience Triumphs: What keeps this ageing Argentina squad so consistently elite? Meanwhile, the laws of the game, governed by IFAB (the International Football Association Board), state that the players are entitled to a halftime break, not exceeding 15 minutes".
Two teams to wear home kits
Unlike the second semifinal between Argentina and England, where the defending champions requested FIFA to wear their navy-blue kits, which the rumour mill said was because of the team’s superstitions, the two finalists (Spain and Argentina) will wear their home kits. Spain will play in the red-and-white home kit, and Argentina in their traditional stripes. While Spain’s youngest player, Lamine Yamal, who plays for FC Barcelona, a club synonymous with Lionel Messi, will feature in his first World Cup final in his debut edition, Messi will play in his third – the most by anyone ever. First-Ever Halftime Show: FIFA bends rules for longest mid-break in World Cup history

Argentina picked an experienced squad for the title defence in North America, and fortunately, that punt paid as Lionel Messi-led side reached the final in successive editions. Messi’s Argentina will take on Spain, which has made the final for the second time in its history and first since winning the title in 2010. While their leader and perhaps the greatest player of all time, Messi, turned 39 midway through the tournament, the average age of this Argentinian squad is 29.2 – the seventh-oldest squad at the 2026 World Cup. But how did this team make it that far in the tournament?
Togetherness and willingness to win
Messi and most of the squad players were part of the 2022 World Cup-winning campaign in Qatar, which made it easier for them and the head coach, Lionel Scaloni, to manage the squad better and deliver the results. Argentina’s squad is undoubtedly an ageing one, but that did not hamper their progress in the tournament. It all began with a Messi show in the group stage. The maestro hit six goals in the first three matches, including his maiden World Cup hat-trick against Algeria in Argentina’s tournament opener. He scored three more in the next two games and two more later, alongside assisting four times in all games to inspire Argentina to another World Cup final. Also read| Argentina vs Spain: Lowest ticket price for World Cup final hits staggering $10,000 mark Although up until the start of the knockouts, it looked like Messi was holding the keys for Argentina, more players began stepping in and scoring goals in crucial matches.

Be it Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez or even Julián Álvarez, all were among the scorers for Argentina in the knockout games, which they won at their pace despite criticism of a lack of zeal.
How the ageing squad won all matches
Argentina kept it late in almost all games to seal wins and qualify for the final. Starting with the Round of 32 match against the tournament’s debutant, Cape Verde, Argentina won 3-2 in stoppage time before beating Egypt in the pre-quarterfinal. Trailing 2-0 with close to 10 minutes remaining, Argentina beat Egypt 3-2 amid several controversies. Again, against Switzerland in the quarterfinals, Argentina won in stoppage time, but beat England in regular time to punch their ticket for the final. Argentina visibly lacked pace, but with experience at their disposal, they managed to stand tall at the end and kept advancing. However, contrary to the infamous notion that they start picking up pace late or after conceding a goal, Argentina must click against Spain to realise their dream of winning back-to-back world titles. Read more| Messi eyes Mbappé’s goals record, Golden Boot and back-to-back World Cup titles ahead of Spain final Meanwhile, bringing in Giuliano Simeone on the wings for the semifinal clash against England was a masterstroke by Scaloni. In the absence of younger legs at the flanks, Simeone’s presence injected freshness into the playing XI. The chances of him retaining his place for the final are high, given how well-placed Spain’s defenders are, who haven’t conceded more than one goal in this tournament. With Messi facing Spain for the first time in World Cups, having played with most or aware of their gameplay, the ageing Argentinian side must take the advantage and deliver on the biggest stage.

Argentina vs Spain: Lowest ticket price for World Cup final hits staggering $10,000 mark

Lionel Messi will not only chase his dream of lifting back-to-back World Cups with Argentina against Spain in Sunday’s final but also Kylian Mbappé’s goals record tally and Golden Boot at the competition. Messi sits in second place with eight goals in this edition, two shy of Mbappé, who completed a fantastic 10 with a brace against England in the third-place playoff, a game they lost 4-6. Should he lead Argentina to its fourth World Cup title at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Messi will become a two-time world champion, back-to-back winner at this competition, and make Argentina the first team since Brazil (in 1962) to do so in successive World Cups. However, for him to have everything on his side, he and the defending champions must click against Spain, which has conceded just one goal in this edition, making it Argentina’s toughest challenge at the grandest stage. While a few goal-scoring records belong to Argentina, including being the first team to score two goals in 13 successive World Cup matches, they go up against a defensive force at the grand finale, and Messi must lead the attack.

Infamous for kicking into gear only after conceding first or around the 80th minute at this edition specifically, Argentina narrowly yet successfully beat teams in tight matches in the lead-up to the final. After beating the tournament’s debutant, Cape Verde, late in stoppage time in the Round of 32, Messi inspired Argentina’s comeback against Egypt despite trailing 2-0 at the 79th minute. Again, against Switzerland in the quarterfinal, Messi’s side completed the win in stoppage time before knocking off England 2-1 in the pulsating semifinal in Atlanta. In fact, Argentina has created an unwanted history as only the second team after Croatia in 2018 to advance to the World Cup final without leading in the 90th minute in any of its knockout matches. Meanwhile, with 22 goals in three editions and age on his side, Mbappé would most definitely end up with the most World Cup goals ever. This record might never be broken; regardless, Messi has a chance to either equal it or eventually break it in his last World Cup appearance.

These include the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027, FIFA Youth World Cups, Futsal competitions and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. According to Infantino, this collaboration will help ensure football remains in the spotlight throughout the year rather than only during the World Cup. Speaking about the sport’s rise in India, Infantino said the country has a deep love for football and enormous potential for future growth. He recalled his visit during the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017, when more than 1.3 million fans attended matches, setting a tournament attendance record. He also mentioned returning for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2022 and visiting India for the IOC session. Infantino added that meeting Indian football icon Sunil Chhetri was a memorable and special experience. The FIFA President also highlighted India’s connection with the 2026 World Cup despite the national team not qualifying for the tournament. He pointed out that several players of Indian origin represented countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Qatar and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He also noted that thousands of Indian supporters were among the more than 6.5 million fans who attended matches across the 16 host cities, with many passionately cheering for teams including Argentina, Brazil, Portugal and England.
