Real Madrid clinched their 36th La Liga title after a win over Cadizwas coupledwith a defeat for Barcelona against Girona on Saturday (May 4). Having won 3-0 against Cadiz, a4-2 defeat for Barcelona against Catalonian giants Girona meant that Real won La Liga title with four matches to spare in the season.Thisis the club’s second La Liga title under coach Carlo Ancelottihavingalso clinched the 2022 title under him. The win for Girona also assured their Champions League qualification for next season.

Heading into Saturday, Real Madrid were on 84 pointswhileBarcelona started the day on 73 pointswithboth teams each playing 33 matches. Earlier in the day, goals from Brahim Diaz, Jude Bellingham and Joselu helped Real Madrid win 3-0 against Cadiz. The win meant that Real Madrid reached 87 points with four matchesto go.

Later in the day, despite leadingtwiceBarcelona lost to Girona 4-2 at the home of their local rivals. The result meant Barcelona couldnowreach a maximum of 85 points while Gironainsecond place in La Ligaalsocannot breach the 87-point tally of Real Madrid as they canreacha maximum of 86 points (if they win all their four matches).

Real Madrid’s hunthoweverwon’t end with La Liga as they are still in the running to win the ChampionsLeaguewhere they host Bayern Munich on Wednesday. With 36 La Liga titlestheLos Blancos remain the most successful club in the history of the Spanish top flight.

The result also had historic silver lining to it as Girona (74 points) sit above Barcelona (73 points) with four matches to go in the season. No local rival from the Catalonian region has finished above Barcelona since World War ll. In 1941-42, Espanyol finished ninth while Barcelona 12thbutsincethenthe Camp Nou outfit have never been piped by a local rival.

The result also saw Girona officially qualify for the expanded version of the Champions League in the 2024-25 season.
