Miss Michigan Alma Cooper wins Miss USA 2024 months after pageant controversy

Miss USA 2024 has officially been announced! After defeating Miss Kentucky Connor Perry, Miss Oklahoma Danika Christopherson and 47 others, Miss Michigan Alma Cooper has won the coveted title and crown. The 22-year-old has a Master’s degree in data science from Stanford University. During the competition, she revealed that she is "the daughter of a migrant worker, a proud Afro-Latina woman".
Cooper will now go on to represent the United States in the Miss Universe Pageant scheduled for November. "If there’s anything that my life and my mother have taught me, it’s that your circumstances never define your destiny: You can make success accessible through demanding excellence," she told the judges during the Q&A round.
Held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, the Miss USA pageant included swimwear and evening gown competitions. The glitzy event came just three months after Noelia Voigt and UmaSofia Srivastava announced their resignations, which cast a dark shadow over the organisation's reputation.
Back in May, Voigt had cited mental health concerns for stepping down and alleged a toxic work environment within the organisation. She announced her departure on Instagram and later, her eight-page resignation letter circulated online.

Voigt’s resignation was quickly followed by that of Miss Teen USA 2023, UmaSofia Srivastava, who stated that her personal values no longer aligned with those of the organization.
Meanwhile, on August 1, Miss Mississippi Teen USA Addie Carver was crowned Miss Teen USA 2024. Among the finalists were Ava Colindres of Georgia as the first runner-up and Rachael McLaen of Arizona as the second runner-up.
