While this is his first foray into Telugu cinema, he has been part of other South Indian films in the past. Akshay's film Ashaant was released in Kannada as Vishnu Vijaya in 1993. The actor made his Tamil debut in Shankar's 2018 blockbuster 2.0, which also starred Rajinikanth.
Kannappa also stars Vishnu Manchu and his father, Mohan Babu, alongside Prabhas, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Madhoo, Sarathkumar, Prabhu Deva, and others. The film will feature music by Stephen Devassy and Mani Sharma, cinematography by Sheldon Chau, and editing by Anthony.
Produced under the banner of AVA Entertainment and 24 Frames Factory, the film's screenplay is crafted by Mohan Babu, with a story developed by Paruchuri Gopala Krishna, Eshwar Reddy, G Nageswara Reddy, and Thota Prasad.
Shot originally in Telugu, Kannappa will be dubbed into other South Indian languages as well as Hindi to cater to a wider audience base.
