Punjab Kings have ushered in a new chapter of their IPL journey, unveiling their revamped squad, coaching staff, and leadership under the guidance of head coach Ricky Ponting and captain Shreyas Iyer. Ahead of their opening match, team's CEO Satish Menon along with head coach Ricky Ponting and team captain Shreyas Iyer, laid out its vision for the upcoming season, expressing confidence in their squad composition and future prospects.
Ponting, who took over the coaching reins six months ago, emphasised the importance of rebuilding the team from the ground up. The franchise strategically retained just two young players ahead of the auction, enabling them to enter the bidding process with a substantial purse. This approach allowed Punjab Kings to acquire key Indian talents such as Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal, ensuring a robust mix of experience and youth.
“We wanted to go into the auction with a clean slate, and I believe we have built an extremely balanced team. Our squad now consists of high-quality Indian players alongside strong overseas talent. The atmosphere in the camp is positive, and the players are motivated to give their best," said Ponting.

The appointment of Shreyas Iyer as captain was a pivotal decision for the franchise. Having previously worked with Iyer at Delhi Capitals, Ponting expressed his admiration for the batsman’s leadership skills and winning mentality. “Shreyas is an IPL-winning captain and one of the finest cricketers I have worked with. His presence will be instrumental in shaping our team’s identity," Ponting added.
Iyer, confident in his approach, declared his preferred batting position at No. 3, indicating clarity in his role within the team. “I am focusing on anchoring the innings at No. 3. It’s a position I am comfortable with, and I believe I can contribute significantly from there," he said.
As the franchise gears up for IPL 2025, they face the challenge of improving their home record, which has been underwhelming in recent seasons. Ponting and Iyer both stressed the importance of turning their home ground into a fortress and establishing dominance. “The past results don’t matter. We have a fresh team and a fresh mindset. We will analyse conditions, understand what works best for our venue, and ensure we make it a tough place for visiting teams," opined Ponting.

'We will be dynamic and destructive'

Menon echoed the sentiment of building a strong Punjab identity within the team. With the inclusion of several local players, the franchise aims to resonate with its regional fanbase and create a distinct cultural bond. “We are working on fostering a sense of togetherness within the squad. Having five Punjab players in the team adds to the local flavor and strengthens our identity. The camaraderie between players and the coaching staff is excellent," said Menon.
The franchise is also focused on expanding its fanbase, recognising that success on the field plays a crucial role in drawing support. “Winning brings fans. We already have a dedicated following, but this season, we aim to increase our reach significantly," Menon hinted at upcoming initiatives to enhance engagement.
With pre-season training underway and practice matches lined up, Punjab Kings are determined to set the tone early. Their opening encounter against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad will be a significant test, and Ponting has assured fans that they will witness an aggressive, fearless brand of cricket. “When we step onto the field, we will be dynamic, determined, and destructive. We are here to entertain and, most importantly, to win," Ponting signed off.
As Punjab Kings embark on their renewed IPL journey, the anticipation among fans is palpable. With a fresh squad, strategic leadership, and a well-defined vision, the team looks poised for an exciting season ahead.

IPL 2025 | 'We are here to entertain and, most importantly, to win', says PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting

The Indian Premier League is back, and as always, the buzz around the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is electrifying. With a revamped squad featuring a formidable batting lineup and a strengthened bowling attack, the perennial underachievers are once again aiming for the elusive title. However, one lingering question remains—does RCB have the firepower to go all the way?
De Villiers, who spent 11 seasons with RCB, believes that the team's strategic moves during the player auction have bolstered their chances. He said, "I really think they made some incredibly good moves in the auction. It's an incredibly good, balanced team." AB de Villiers, while addressing the media ahead of the 18th season of the TATA IPL on Star Sports Press Room on Explosive Rankings, emphasised the depth of the batting lineup, noting the blend of power and control, and expressed confidence in the team's potential to clinch the title this year.
‘Yes, they might be lacking an X-factor spinner, but I don't see it as a massive problem,’ he said. ‘The team has a wonderful balance this time, and that is going to be their biggest strength. Their real challenge will be navigating their tricky schedule, hopping across different venues. That will test their adaptability more than anything else."

A significant change for RCB this season is the appointment of Rajat Patidar as the new captain. De Villiers acknowledged the challenges Patidar might face, particularly the pressure of stepping into the shoes of former leaders like Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis. He advised Patidar to remain authentic in his leadership approach, saying, "His challenge will be trusting himself. He must not try to captain like Virat or Faf but lead in his own way. Use the experience around him, but always stay true to who he is.’"
Virat Kohli's role remains crucial for RCB. Despite stepping down from T20 internationals, De Villiers believes Kohli has 'plenty left in the tank', especially with the current batting lineup. He envisions Kohli as the 'batting captain', guiding the innings with his experience and game awareness. De Villiers also addressed external criticisms of Kohli's strike rate, suggesting that while outside opinions can influence any player, Kohli's focus and commitment on the field remain unwavering.
Interestingly, De Villiers also shared a light-hearted anecdote about the popular RCB chant 'Ee Sala Cup Namde', which translates to "This year, the cup is ours". He revealed that Kohli had messaged him, requesting him to refrain from using the phrase, perhaps to avoid jinxing their chances. De Villiers humorously recounted, "I said 'Ee Sala Cup Namde' somewhere and immediately got a text from Virat to not use it anymore."

'Rickelton-Rohit partnership might light up Wankhede'

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians are set to unleash a new weapon in South African batter Ryan Rickelton. Slotted to open alongside Rohit Sharma, the left-hander is in the form of his life and could be one of the most dangerous batters this season. ‘Rickelton and Rohit—the double R’s,’ AB de Villiers quipped. ‘That’s a partnership that could light up Wankhede this season. Mumbai loves an explosive overseas opener, and Rickelton fits the bill perfectly."
The IPL is known for producing young breakout stars, and former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes names like Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Suryakumar Yadav could take their performances to even greater heights this season. However, he pointed out, ‘T20 is a format designed for failure. You will fail more than you succeed. The challenge is to keep evolving."
On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders are dealing with some key departures, including Mitchell Starc and Phil Salt. They have tried to make up for it with Spencer Johnson and other additions, but whether they can replicate last season’s success remains to be seen. "The team is still strong, but their biggest challenge will be overcoming internal conflicts and finding the right balance," Chopra remarked.
As the season unfolds, the stage is set for an unforgettable IPL. Will RCB finally lift the trophy? Can Mumbai’s new opening duo set the tournament alight? And will Rajat Patidar’s leadership prove to be the X-factor for Bengaluru? One thing is certain—this season promises drama, intensity, and moments of pure cricketing brilliance.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer recently shared a nostalgic memory from the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), when he was a ball boy at Wankhede Stadium during a match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The young cricketer, who was playing for Mumbai's U-14 team at the time, got his first glimpse of IPL up close, an experience that left a lasting impact on him.
Speaking on ‘Superstars’ programme, hosted by the digital broadcasters, Iyer recalled being a shy teenager but mustering the courage to interact with New Zealand’s Ross Taylor, who was playing for RCB.
"I grew up playing street cricket and was lucky to be a ball boy for that match. I remember being reserved while my friends approached players, but I decided to give it a try. Ross Taylor was one of my favourite players, so I went up to him and said, ‘Sir, I am a big fan of yours.’ He was very sweet and thanked me. Back then, it was common for kids to ask for bats or gloves, but I was too shy, even though I really wanted to," he said.

Iyer also fondly recalled meeting Punjab Kings' all-rounder Irfan Pathan during the same game. "I still remember Irfan Pathan standing at long-on. He sat with us and asked if we were enjoying the match. We told him we were having a great time. At that time, Irfan bhai was hugely popular, and Punjab Kings had some of the most good-looking boys, including Yuvi pa (Yuvraj Singh). It’s a memory that has stayed with me over the years," he added.
Since making his IPL debut in 2015, Iyer has made 3,127 runs at an average of 32.23 and a strike rate of 127.47, with 21 fifties. He was named the 'Emerging Player' in his debut season after scoring 439 runs for the Delhi Capitals. His leadership skills came to the fore in 2018 when he captained DC, guiding them to the 2020 finals. After moving to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2022, he led them to their first title in a decade in 2024 under the mentorship of Gautam Gambhir.
Now, as PBKS skipper, Iyer will aim to recreate his past successes when his team kicks off its 2025 campaign against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 25.

Ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant emphasised the importance of being proactive in leadership. He shared that over the past two years, he has been learning how to enhance his captaincy skills and foster strong communication within the team.
Pant, who made history as the most expensive player in IPL auctions when LSG acquired him for $312 million, is determined to guide the franchise to its maiden title. Speaking in a video shared by Star on X, Pant highlighted the challenges of managing a team filled with experienced and international players.

"I want to be proactive, and that’s something I’ve been working on over the last two years. The more you communicate with management and players, the stronger the bond becomes. It’s crucial to establish a clear channel of communication so that everyone aligns with the same thought process," Pant said.

He acknowledged that captaincy in the IPL comes with its own complexities, especially when leading a squad with senior and international players. "One of the biggest challenges is how to effectively communicate with them so that everyone moves in the same direction," he added.
Pant also stressed upon the importance of allowing players the freedom to express themselves, aiming to create a positive team environment. "I want to build a space where players feel free to express themselves. It sounds simple, but making it a reality requires effort from everyone," he shared.
LSG will begin their IPL 2025 campaign against Delhi Capitals, Pant’s former team, on Monday (March 24) at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. The franchise previously reached the playoffs in IPL 2022 and 2023 but was eliminated in the eliminator on both occasions. However, IPL 2024 saw them slip to a seventh-place finish in the table.
With Pant at the helm, Lucknow Super Giants will be looking to turn their fortunes around and contend for their first-ever IPL title.

IPL 2025: Rishabh Pant aims to 'lead proactively' as Lucknow Super Giants gear up for season

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is back for its 18th edition, and for fans of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), there is a growing sense of destiny attached to the number 18. The most loyal supporters of the franchise know this number all too well—it is the jersey number of their talisman, Virat Kohli.
For over a decade, Kohli has carried RCB on his shoulders, often being the lone warrior in a team that has struggled to cross the final hurdle. As IPL 2025 kicks off, the question arises once again: could this be the year RCB finally breaks its long-standing curse and lifts the coveted trophy?

RCB’s journey: The eternal bridesmaids

Since the inception of the IPL in 2008, Royal Challengers Bangalore has been one of the most followed and passionately supported teams. Based in the cricket-mad city of Bangalore (now Bengaluru), the team has had everything—superstars, a strong fan base, financial backing, and electric home support at the M. RCB has reached the final three times—2009, 2011, and 2016—only to fall short on each occasion. The 2009 final saw them lose to the Deccan Chargers, despite a solid campaign. In 2011, they were blown away by Chennai Super Kings and a rampaging MS Dhoni-led squad. But the most painful defeat arguably came in 2016, when Virat Kohli had a dream season, scoring a record-breaking 973 runs, only for RCB to stumble in the final against Sunrisers Hyderabad. That season remains one of the biggest 'what-ifs' in IPL history.
Over the years, RCB has been home to some of the biggest names in T20 cricket—Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis, and of course, Kohli. Despite their individual brilliance, the team has often lacked balance, particularly in the bowling department. The 'RCB curse' has become a running joke among IPL fans, but 2025 might just be the year things change.

Bengaluru's love affair with cricket

Bengaluru has always been a cricketing powerhouse. The city has produced legends like Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, and Javagal Srinath. The Chinnaswamy Stadium is one of the most iconic venues in India, known for its electric atmosphere and high-scoring games due to its short boundaries. Yet, despite the love for cricket in the city, RCB has not been able to deliver a title to its passionate supporters.
Bengaluru's other major franchise, the Bengaluru Bulls in the Pro Kabaddi League, has tasted success, winning the PKL title in 2018. This has made RCB’s lack of silverware even more glaring. However, if there’s one thing common between RCB fans and Bengaluru's sporting culture, it’s resilience. The city continues to rally behind its team, no matter how many heartbreaks they endure.

The symbolism of 18

The number 18 holds a special place in RCB’s history, primarily because of Virat Kohli. He has worn this number throughout his career, both for India and RCB. The 18th edition of the IPL, therefore, feels symbolic—it’s as if the cricketing universe is aligning for Kohli and RCB to finally lift the trophy.
Kohli, who stepped down as RCB captain after the 2021 season, remains the heart and soul of the team. Even without the armband, he continues to be their biggest match-winner and emotional leader. Could IPL 2025 be the perfect script for Kohli to finally lift the one trophy that has eluded him?

Destiny or just another year?

While numbers and symbolism make for great narratives, IPL is won on the field, not in theories. Every season, RCB starts with hope, and every season, their fans are left heartbroken. Yet, this time, there is an added element of destiny—the 18th edition, Kohli’s 18, and possibly his last few seasons in the IPL.
If there was ever a time for RCB to rise, it is now. The ghosts of the past still linger, but cricket is a game of moments. If they can seize theirs, IPL 2025 might just be the year Bengaluru finally erupts in celebration. Will the number 18 bring luck, or will it just be another painful chapter in RCB’s history? The next few months will tell.

Sports, Cricket: As IPL 2025 kicks off, the question arises once again: Could this be the year RCB finally breaks its long-standing curse and lifts the coveted trophy?

RCB’s journey: The eternal bridesmaids Since the inception of the IPL in 2008, Royal Challengers Bangalore has been one of the most followed and passionately supported teams. Based in the cricket-mad city of Bangalore (now Bengaluru), the team has had everything—superstars, a strong fan base, financial backing, and electric home support at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. IPL 2025 | 18 years, number 18 (Kohli), and RCB’s championship dreams – Will it all align?

It was a bowling nightmare for Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi on Tuesday (Mar 18) after he was hit for four sixes in an over during the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand. The destruction was caused by New Zealand batter and former Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Tim Seifert. As a result of his batting havoc, New Zealand beat Pakistan by five wickets while Seifert has made headlines ahead of the new IPL season.

Who is Tim Seifert?

Nicknamed “Bam Bam”—a nod to The Flintstones—due to his youthful appearance and powerful hitting, Tim Seifert is a dynamic top-order batter and wicketkeeper. Known for his 360-degree stroke play, he has an array of shots, including the reverse sweep and switch hit. His talent was on full display in December 2017 when he hammered a 40-ball century for Northern Districts in New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition, taking on an Auckland attack featuring Lockie Ferguson, Sam Curran, and Tarun Nethula.
Just two months later, Seifert made his T20I debut for New Zealand and quickly became their preferred wicketkeeper in the format. In 2019, he made headlines with a blistering 84 off 43 balls against India in Wellington, earning comparisons to his idol, Brendon McCullum. His association with McCullum deepened when he played under him at Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. Seifert particularly honed his batting and wicketkeeping skills against spin during his CPL stint with TKR.

The Indian Cricket Board has asked all ten IPL team captains to assemble in Mumbai two days before the 18th edition gets underway in Kolkata later this week. Per the latest report, all ten skippers representing their teams in the cash-rich league will be in the city for a crucial pre-season meeting at the BCCI headquarters around noon this Thursday (Mar 20).
Cricbuzz reported that the emails forwarded by the BCCI/IPL management to all teams surrounding the meeting, to be staged at the Cricket Centre, are more of a briefing and might stretch for an hour. The agenda of this meeting is to inform all concerned captains about the new additions and changes for the impending season. The sponsor activities will follow afterwards at the Taj Hotel.

Months later, Pant recreated that moment in the latest clip.
The instance happened during the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia at the MCG last year, when Pant tried playing a cheeky shot against Scott Boland, only for him to mistime it to the third man, where the fielder grabbed it comfortably. His wicket came at the wrong time for India, as it almost triggered a batting collapse for them in the first innings.
Upset with Pant’s shot selection, who often faces criticism for his lack of match awareness, Gavaskar slammed him left, right, and centre.

Calling out the game on ABC Sport, Gavaskar said, “You’ve got two fielders there, and you still go for that. You missed the previous shot, and look where you’ve been caught. That is throwing away your wicket. You cannot say that is your natural game. I’m sorry.”
“That is not your natural game. This is a stupid shot. This is letting your team down badly. You have to understand the situation as well.”
Livid with that dismissal, Gavaskar continued, “He should not be going in that [India’s] dressing room, he should be going in the other dressing room.”

Sports, Cricket: Upset with Pant’s shot selection, who often faces criticism for his lack of match awareness, Gavaskar slammed him left, right and centre.

Ace India keeper batter Rishabh Pant was at the receiving end of Sunil Gavaskar’s commentary that went viral, calling Pant’s shot, which led to the fall of his wicket, 'stupid, stupid, stupid!’ That clip went viral on social media, with everyone picking on Gavaskar’s over-the-top reaction to Pant’s dismissal. England batter Harry Brook pulled out of the impending IPL season after getting picked by Delhi Capitals at the mega auction late last year. Had it been the previous season, he would have gotten away with this, which he did, but, with the IPL council laying strict penalties for anyone doing so if not injured or for unavoidable reasons, that player shall be banned for two years, which happened with Brook. His former teammate Moeen Ali agrees with BCCI for banning Brook.
“It’s not harsh. I kind of agree with it, in a way, because a lot of people do that,” Moeen Ali said on the podcast “Beard Before Cricket.”

Moeen noted how plenty of players have done it before for their reasons, adding it's good that BCCI made a note of it by putting up a ban for up to two years. “A lot of people have done it in the past, and then they come back in, and they end up getting a better financial package, or whatever it is. And he kind of messes a lot of things up as well at the same time,” Moeen said. “I mean, it’s messed his team up, obviously, by pulling out. Any team that loses Harry Brook is messed up a bit, and they’ve got to now rejig everything and stuff like that.”
“Forget him for a second, but if you do pull out, the rule is that you get a ban unless it’s for family reasons or… due to injury or something. Echoing Moeen’s words, his former teammate and England international Adil Rashid spoke on the same lines, saying Brook knew from the beginning what the repercussions were, and since he did pull out despite knowing about them, BCCI’s call to ban Brook wasn’t harsh at all.
“So, when you put your name in, you know if you pull out, this is going to happen. So, you know the consequences of it. So, I don’t think it’s harsh.
“No, but if you pull out and you have, like you say, an injury or whatever, then I think that’s where something like the rules may differ or change in that way.

Even at the RCB, Faf captained 42 matches across three seasons, with the side winning 21 and losing as many. Under his leadership, RCB made it to the playoffs twice, including last year after beating CSK in a thriller at home, but fell shy in the eliminators on both occasions. Faf has smashed 2,718 runs in 74 matches in the past five seasons as a top-order batter.
Meanwhile, the newly-formed leadership group will work in tandem with the coaching staff, including head coach Hemang Badani, Venugopal Rao as director of cricket, Munaf Patel as bowling coach, Matthew Mott as an assistant coach, Kevin Pietersen as a mentor, and Gnaneswara Rao and Anton Roux as fielding coaches, respectively.
Among the four teams left to have never lifted an IPL trophy, DC has a chance to write history in IPL 2025, where they face off against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their tournament opener on Monday (Mar 24) in Vizag.

The Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan’s first global cricket event in nearly three decades, turned into a massive financial and logistical failure. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) suffered an 85 per cent loss after investing $100 million but hosting only one completed home match.

Financial setback

According to The Telegraph, the PCB spent PKR 18 billion ($58 million) upgrading three venues—Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi—exceeding their budget by 50 per cent. An additional $40 million was spent on event preparations. However, the revenue generated from hosting fees, ticket sales, and sponsorships amounted to just $6 million, leading to a staggering $85 million loss.

Pakistan played only one match at home against New Zealand at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. Their game against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was washed out without a toss, while two of the remaining eight matches held in Pakistan met the same fate.
In the aftermath, Pakistani cricketers faced severe pay cuts. Match fees in the National T20 Championship were slashed by 90 per cent, and reserve player payments saw an 87.5 per cent reduction. While players were shifted to budget accommodations, Pakistan Cricket Board officials reportedly continued drawing hefty salaries.
According to Dawn, match fees were reduced from $460 to $115 without any official announcement. However, Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi later intervened, revising the amount to $345 per match, still $115 lower than the previous year.
Despite the investment, the tournament saw shockingly low attendance, especially in matches involving the Pakistan cricket team.
The opening game between Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi had significant empty stands, a sight that was unexpected for a cricket-loving nation. Security concerns, high ticket prices, lack of promotional efforts, and the team’s dismal on-field performances contributed to the diminishing interest among fans.

Pakistan’s Champions Trophy dream turns into an $85 million nightmare

India Prime Minister Narendra Modi has weighed in on the long-standing India-Pakistan cricket rivalry, citing India's dominant record in ICC tournaments as a clear indicator of superiority.
India triumphed over Pakistan in the recently-concluded 2025 ICC Champions Trophy group stage, steered by a brilliant Virat Kohli century, before eventually securing the title. Over the years, Pakistan has only managed two victories against India in ICC events—the 2017 Champions Trophy final and the 2021 T20 World Cup group stage.
Speaking on the Lex Fridman podcast that aired on Sunday (Mar 16), PM Modi emphasised the power of sports in uniting nations while acknowledging that results often tell their own story.

"I think sports have the power to energise the entire world. They bring people together in ways beyond just the game itself. While I am no expert in cricket skills, those who are can determine the best team and the best players. But sometimes, results are enough to tell us who is better. Just a few days ago, India and Pakistan played, and the result spoke for itself," Modi said.

'Maradona was a true hero'

During his tenure, India has witnessed a significant push in sports development, with the country even aiming to host the 2036 Olympics. The prime minister was also asked about his pick for the greatest footballer of all time. He named two Argentine legends — Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi — as the best in history.
"In the 1980s, one name stood out—Diego Maradona. For that generation, he was a true hero. If you ask today's generation, they'll immediately say Lionel Messi."
India’s football scene is also gaining traction, with both the men’s and women’s teams making remarkable progress in recent years. “It is absolutely true that many regions in India have a strong football culture. Our women’s football team is performing really well, and our men’s team is progressing really well," he added.

Modi on India-Pakistan rivalry: Indian PM settles biggest cricket debate

Amid the bustling pre-season preparations for the Indian Premier League, Karun Nair sat calmly in front of the media, clad in the blue and red of Delhi Capitals jersey. His demeanor was composed, his responses measured, and his eyes carried the quiet intensity of a man who had seen both the soaring highs and humbling lows of cricket.
Karun’s career has been one of stark contrasts. He became only the second Indian to score a triple century in Test cricket, an achievement that should have cemented his place in the national team. However, fate had other plans, and the doors to the Indian team seemed to close sooner than expected. Yet, the weight of being in and out of contention never crushed his spirit. Instead, it fueled an inner fire, a desire to prove himself again.
In the last domestic season, Karun Nair showcased the kind of form that reminded everyone of his talent. His batting was a spectacle—fluid, fearless, and composed under pressure. Match after match, he made runs with an ease that made it clear he was far from done. His performances were a testament to his hunger, a reminder to selectors that he still had much to offer.

'Feels great to be back in Delhi'

Now, as he returns to Delhi Capitals, he spoke with gratitude and excitement about the new season.
“It feels great to be back. Delhi Capitals have always been a special franchise for me. But this is a fresh start, a new opportunity,” he said while answering a question from WION during an interaction with journalists. His voice was steady, betraying no signs of frustration about the years spent waiting for another IPL chance.
Asked about his recent run of form, he exuded confidence but avoided arrogance. “I have been playing cricket for a long time now, and it’s always about how you handle the ups and downs. These last two years have been crucial for me in terms of rediscovering my game and my hunger for runs,” he explained.
Despite the probing questions about his absence from the IPL and the Indian team, Karun remained unshaken. He knew his game, trusted his process, and most importantly, understood the importance of staying prepared. “I just want to go out there, enjoy my cricket, and contribute whenever I get the chance. There are no personal targets—just the goal of helping the team win,” he asserted, reflecting a mindset focused on the present rather than the past.
The return to Delhi, however, brought back memories. The last time he played for Delhi, it was under the name Delhi Daredevils. Now, years later, the name had changed, and so had Karun—older, wiser, and more determined.
As the IPL season loomed, Karun’s journey was a narrative of perseverance. He had nothing to prove to anyone but himself. He had seen the glory of scoring a triple century, the agony of being overlooked, and the grind of domestic cricket. Through it all, he had held onto the one motivation that had always driven him: Playing for India again.
For now, though, his eyes are set on the IPL. He is ready to seize every opportunity, to let his bat do the talking, and to remind the world why Karun Nair still belonged on the biggest stage.

Also Read: Yuvraj Singh involved in heated face-off with West Indies pacer Tino Best during IML 2025 final- WATCH 'Feels great to be back in Delhi' Now, as he returns to Delhi Capitals, he spoke with gratitude and excitement about the new season.

IPL 2025 | From forgotten to formidable: Karun Nair lets his bat do the talking

During the International Masters League (IML) 2025 final held in Raipur, a heated exchange happened between India's Yuvraj Singh and West Indies' pacer Tino Best. The incident took place after Best completed his over and attempted to leave the field, possibly due to an injury concern. Yuvraj flagged this to the umpire, leading to Best's return, which escalated into a verbal confrontation. West Indies Masters captain Brian Lara and Ambati Rayudu intervened to defuse the situation.
Following the spat, Yuvraj responded by hitting a massive six off Best's delivery, reminiscent of his six sixes against England's Stuart Broad in the 2007 T20 World Cup after a verbal exchange with Andrew Flintoff. However, during a subsequent strategic timeout, Yuvraj and Best were seen reconciling, with Yuvraj playfully patting Best's back.

India Masters win

Coming to the match, Sachin Tendulkar rolled back the years with a scintillating knock, while Ambati Rayudu slammed a stylish fifty as India Masters dished out an all-round show to beat West Indies Masters by six wickets and win the inaugural International Masters League on Sunday (March 16).
The Indian bowlers, led by Vinay Kumar (3-0-26-3) and Shahbaz Nadeem (4-1-12-2), had earlier set the tone, restricting West Indies Masters to a modest 148/7 after Brian Lara opted to bat. In response, Tendulkar treated fans to a glimpse of his golden days, unleashing his signature strokes in his brief but memorable stay of 25 runs from 18 balls.

Ambati Rayudu (74 in 50 balls; 9x4, 3x6), on the other end, held on to anchor the chase before Yuvraj Singh (13 not out) and Stuart Binny (15 not out) sealed the chase in 17.1 overs.
In a Sachin vs Lara faceoff, the West Indies Masters looked set for a 180-plus total as Dwayne Smith (45 off 35 balls, 6x4, 2x6) took charge, while Lara played second fiddle opening the innings.
The duo were in top gear at 34 from 22 balls before Vinay Kumar halted Lara's innings. But they reached 52/1 in the powerplay, with Smith tearing into Negi for 15 runs in an over.
However, the left-arm spinner Nadeem struck at the right time, castling Smith with a delivery that skidded on as he played for the turn. Vinay Kumar was the standout performer, dismissing Lara (6) early and returning at the death to claim the prized wicket of their top-scorer Lendl Simmons (57 off 41 balls, 5x4, 1x6).
Despite Simmons' fighting fifty and a 61-run stand with Denesh Ramdin (12 not out), West Indies Masters lacked the finishing touch, setting the stage for Sachin's nostalgic masterclass and India Masters' emphatic title triumph.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made a startling revelation ahead of the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League. After rejoining Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where it all began for him in this cash-rich league, Ashwin, who’d be playing alongside his former India and CSK captain MS Dhoni, revealed that he invited Dhoni for his 100th Test earlier last year in Dharamsala (against England), wanting him to hand over the memento, but that failed to get materialised as Dhoni couldn’t make it.
Ashwin added he wanted that Test to be his last, but because MS failed to make it, he continued playing; after the third BGT Test against Australia at the Gabba in December 2025, Ashwin announced his international retirement.

At 36, Mohit Sharma is not just another fast bowler trying to extend his career—he is a seasoned warrior, a quiet enforcer, and a man who has seen every high and low the game has to offer. When he came for the pre-season interactions with Delhi Capitals, he carried with him the same warm smile that has been his signature for years. He greeted everyone with respect, exchanged laughs, and exuded an easy-going charm that made even the most intense cricket discussions feel like casual banter. But behind that ever-present smile lies an unrelenting spirit, one that refuses to fade away.
Mohit’s journey in cricket has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. From being a key player in Chennai Super Kings’ dominant era to an IPL Purple Cap winner, then battling injuries and setbacks, and finally making a roaring comeback with Gujarat Titans—he has lived through every possible phase of a cricketer’s life. Now, as he dons the Delhi Capitals jersey, the hunger remains the same, but the wisdom he brings to the team is even greater.
His approach to preparation is methodical yet adaptive. “I am preparing myself overall, to be honest. I am taking care of my body, bowling with both the new ball and the old ball, and making sure I am ready for any situation,” he shared. For a format as volatile as T20, adaptability is everything, and Mohit has mastered the art of reinventing himself time and again.

One of the key aspects of his game has been his ability to handle setbacks with grace. He has never been one to dwell on losses or bask too long in victories. Even when asked about one of the most heartbreaking moments of his career—the 2023 IPL final, where a couple of crucial deliveries changed the game—his response was one of acceptance and perspective. “I believe in destiny. If something good happens, I move forward. If something bad happens, I go back to the nets,” he said, shrugging off any lingering regrets.
Delhi Capitals will look to tap into this experience, especially with a bowling attack that features both young firepower and experienced campaigners. The presence of a veteran like Mohit Sharma in the dressing room will undoubtedly be invaluable, not just for his skill but for the calmness and clarity he brings. “In T20s, you will get hit. If you are afraid of getting hit for sixes, you won’t take wickets,” he says with a smile, emphasising the importance of courage in high-pressure situations.

'Starc will bring great value to team'

A crucial addition to this IPL season will be Mitchell Starc, a bowler Mohit Sharma deeply respects. When asked about the Australian speedster’s impact, Mohit was candid in his admiration. “Experience matters a lot in T20s, not just in terms of performance but in learning. Having someone like Starc in the mix brings great value to the team. We have all taken hits in this format, but it’s about bouncing back. Starc's ability to deliver in crunch moments will be crucial for us.”
Mohit also acknowledges the role of great mentors in his career, particularly his time under MS Dhoni and Ashish Nehra. Now, as he steps into a new environment, he brings with him the lessons of leadership, patience, and resilience. Having been a part of IPL for over a decade, he understands that reputations mean little—execution on the field is everything.
As Delhi Capitals prepare for the upcoming IPL season, Mohit Sharma remains a fascinating subplot in their campaign. Will he once again prove his mettle and script another chapter in his storied career? If his past is any indication, the answer lies in the same smile that never leaves his face—one that says he’s ready for whatever comes next.

Cricket, Sports: Mohit acknowledges the role of great mentors in his career, particularly his time under MS Dhoni and Ashish Nehra as he steps into a new environment

Also Read: Massive boost for Rajasthan Royals as star Indian duo joins squad ahead of IPL 2025 One of the key aspects of his game has been his ability to handle setbacks with grace. 'Starc will bring great value to team' A crucial addition to this IPL season will be Mitchell Starc, a bowler Mohit Sharma deeply respects. When asked about the Australian speedster’s impact, Mohit was candid in his admiration. “Experience matters a lot in T20s, not just in terms of performance but in learning. Having someone like Starc in the mix brings great value to the team. We have all taken hits in this format, but it’s about bouncing back. SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) have a new power-hitter in Ishan Kishan. Mumbai Indians (MI) decided against retaining Ishan ahead of the mega auction late last year but did bid for him during it, only for them to lose the race to SRH, who bagged his services for INR 11.25 crore. Since joining the Orange Army, Ishan has been fine-tuning his batting, preparing to bat at a new position (number three) in the playing XI.

IPL 2025: SRH’s Ishan Kishan sends warning signs with star show in intra-squad games – Watch

Defending IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) find themselves in hot waters surrounding a major conflict, threatening their chances of retaining the title in IPL 2025. After announcing seasoned batter Ajinkya Rahane as the captain for the impending season, KKR has too many top order options to pick from ahead of the curtainraiser against the RCB at home next Saturday (Mar 22); cricketer-turned-broadcaster Aakash Chopra explains how.
Rahane is predominantly a top-order batter, having batted inside the top three in white-ball cricket for most of his career, and with plenty of options available with KKR to choose from, they will have a tough time making the final choice. Chopra feels the ‘captain-batter’ conflict could haunt Rahane all season, possibly affecting KKR’s performance.

Although Chopra said he understands the reason behind KKR picking Rahane as the new captain, for how ‘maturely’ he handles pressure, which the franchise’s CEO Venky Mysore also acknowledged, his worry remains should Rahane not bat inside the top three, he is unlikely to contribute to his team’s success.
“For Shreyas Iyer, they've got a domestic middle-order batter, who recently helped his side win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He is in good form. But I do understand because KKR's biggest challenge this season is the 'captain-batter' conflict that Rahane will face.
“For Rahane, the batter, the best thing to do is open at Eden Gardens. Or else, bat at No. 3. Anything lower kills his chance to contribute significantly because he needs the powerplay,” Chopra said in a chat with ESPNcricinfo.

Who opens for KKR?

KKR has Sunil Narine, a proven match-winner and a handy opener for several seasons. With them also buying Proteas gloveman Quinton de Kock, he will open alongside the West Indies spinner, with the newly-appointed vice captain Venkatesh Iyer most likely to bat number three, leaving no room for Rahane to be slotted inside the top three.
Chopra feels Rahane has to pick between the batter that he is or keep the team ahead.
"That is the conflict. Sunil Narine will open, and he will open with Quinton de Kock if he is in the team. Now, will they tell Narine not to open after the runs he scored last season? Of course, he will open. So, No. 3, which is ideally the position for Venkatesh Iyer, is the best you can do for Rahane. Or else he will have to forgo his own ambitions as a batter," he added.
Meanwhile, KKR will host RCB in the curtain raiser on Saturday.

With an infectious energy on the field and an unshakable calm under pressure, Amelia Kerr has cemented herself as one of the most formidable spin-bowling all-rounders in the women's game. Her piercing blue eyes and ever-present smile mask the fierce competitor within—one who thrives in high-stakes encounters and revels in the art of deception with the ball.
The New Zealand and Mumbai Indians (MI) all-rounder has been riding a dream run, which reached another peak with MI’s Women's Premier League (WPL) title win. Kerr not only played a pivotal role in the franchise’s triumph but also walked away as the Purple Cap holder for the most wickets in the season. Her 18 wickets at an average of 15.94, including a season-best of 5/38, solidified her dominance as a spin-bowling powerhouse.

In the final against Delhi Capitals, Kerr delivered when it mattered most. Her spell of 2/25 in four overs derailed Delhi's chase of 150, removing the dangerous Jess Jonassen and Jemimah Rodrigues to ensure MI’s grip on the game never loosened. Alongside her MI teammate Hayley Matthews, Kerr now holds the record for most wickets in a single WPL season.

Kerr's impact is undeniable

Her brilliance in franchise cricket is just the latest chapter in what has been an extraordinary run. The 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup saw Kerr at her absolute best, propelling New Zealand to their maiden title in the format. A defining performance in the final against South Africa—a well-paced 43 off 38 balls and match-winning figures of 3/24—earned her the 'Player of the Match' award. Throughout the tournament, she was the bowler every batter feared, finishing as the leading wicket-taker with 15 scalps at an astonishing average of 7.33.
Her exploits did not go unnoticed. Kerr was named the ICC Women's T20I Player of the Year for 2024, a fitting recognition for a year in which she made 387 runs and took 29 wickets—the most by any New Zealand woman in a single calendar year. With a bowling strike rate of just 13.6 across 18 matches, she was a constant menace, weaving webs around batters with her tactical brilliance and sharp turn.
Amelia Kerr is not just a bowler who takes wickets; she’s an architect of collapses, a match-winner in her own right. Whether it’s the grand stage of a World Cup final or the electric atmosphere of the WPL, one thing is certain—when the stakes are high, Amelia Kerr delivers. And with the kind of form she’s in, her purple patch is far from over.

WPL 2025 | The Kerr effect: How Amelia became most feared spinner in women’s cricket

Star Indian batter Virat Kohli has emphasised the importance of having families accompany players on team India’s tours, saying that their presence helps maintain balance and normalcy, particularly during challenging times.
His comments follow the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) recent directive limiting players’ family time on tours after India's 3-1 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The new rules allow players’ immediate families, partners, and children to join them for only 14 days after the first two weeks of a tour exceeding 45 days, while shorter tours permit family presence for up to a week.
Speaking at the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Kohli expressed his disappointment over the restrictions. "It is very difficult to explain to people how grounding it is to come back to your family after experiencing something intense," he said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Kohli believes that many do not understand the immense value families bring to players. "I feel quite disappointed because people who have no control over what happens are drawn into conversations, and it's suggested they should be kept away," he remarked.
Highlighting the emotional impact of the game, he added, "No player wants to sit alone and sulk after a poor performance. I want to be able to feel normal. Your game is a responsibility—you fulfill it, and then you return to life. Having family around allows you to experience that normalcy."

King Kohli gears up for IPL

Kohli recently played a pivotal role in India’s ICC Champions Trophy win, finishing as the team’s second-highest run-scorer and fifth overall in the tournament. He made 218 runs in five matches at an average of 54.50, including a match-winning 100* against Pakistan while chasing 242 and a crucial 84 off 98 balls against Australia in the semi-final.
Now gearing up for IPL 2025, Kohli will be a key figure for RCB, who begin their campaign against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 22 at Eden Gardens. Sports, Cricket: Star India batter Virat Kohli expressed his disappointment with the BCCI's new rule restricting presence of families during team India's tours

Having family around allows you to experience that normalcy." King Kohli gears up for IPL Kohli recently played a pivotal role in India’s ICC Champions Trophy win, finishing as the team’s second-highest run-scorer and fifth overall in the tournament. The legendary batter, IPL’s all-time leading run-scorer with 8,004 runs in 252 matches, will be eyeing his maiden IPL title alongside setting new records. 'Don't want to sit alone and sulk': Disappointed Virat Kohli slams BCCI's 'family diktat'

Meg Lanning’s emotions were on full display as the final of the Women's Premier League slipped away from her team. A tear welled up in her eye, a fleeting moment of heartbreak after coming so close to victory. But as soon as the camera turned to her, she quickly wiped it away, replacing it with a composed smile. It was a brief yet powerful glimpse into the mindset of a champion—someone who feels the pain of defeat but chooses to face it with grace and dignity.
Meg Lanning has nothing left to prove. She is, without a doubt, one of the greatest captains in cricket history. A six-time ICC trophy-winning leader, she has steered Australia to five T20 World Cup titles (2012, 2014, 2018, 2020, 2023) and an ODI World Cup triumph in 2022. Add to that a Commonwealth Games gold medal (2022) and multiple domestic trophies, and you get a cricketer whose name is synonymous with success.

Yet, despite all her achievements, there is one trophy that continues to slip through her fingers—the Women’s Premier League (WPL). For the third consecutive season, Lanning led the Delhi Capitals to the final, only to see her team falter when it mattered the most.

How Delhi Capitals fell short in final

The night was set for a grand showdown. Under the bright lights of the Brabourne Stadium, Meg Lanning led her Delhi Capitals onto the field, determined to end their finals curse. Facing them were the defending champions from the first season, Mumbai Indians, led by the ever-composed Harmanpreet Kaur. It was a battle of two of the fiercest teams in the Women's Premier League, but as the night unfolded, it turned into yet another heartbreak for Delhi.
Meg Lanning won the toss and put Mumbai into bat, trusting her bowlers to give them an edge. Her decision seemed justified early on when Marizanne Kapp struck twice in the powerplay, reducing Mumbai to 29/2. The Capitals' bowlers were on fire, and for a moment, it looked like they had their rivals pinned down.
But then, Mumbai’s captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, stepped up. Alongside Nat Sciver-Brunt, she weathered the storm, nudging singles and punishing loose deliveries. Their 89-run partnership turned the tide. Harmanpreet’s calculated aggression, combined with Sciver-Brunt’s calmness, helped Mumbai post a competitive total of 149/7. Delhi’s bowlers had done well, but the feeling in the camp was clear—this was far from an easy chase.

Delhi’s shaky start

Chasing 150 in a high-pressure final, Delhi needed a solid start. But what they got was the exact opposite. Shafali Verma fell in the very first over, trying to take on Saika Ishaque but mistiming her shot straight to mid-off. Meg Lanning, the pillar of Delhi’s batting, looked determined to anchor the innings, but she too was undone by Amelia Kerr’s sharp turn, trapped in front for 17. The scoreboard read 44/4, and the Capitals were sinking fast.
Jemimah Rodrigues and Marizanne Kapp tried to steady the ship, stitching together a fighting stand. Kapp played some crisp strokes, and Jemimah rotated the strike well, keeping the hopes alive. But just as the partnership was gaining momentum, Nat Sciver-Brunt returned to break it, removing Rodrigues for 30.
With 28 needed off the last two overs, the pressure was immense. Kapp fought hard, hitting a couple of boundaries, but the task proved too steep. Delhi fell agonisingly short, finishing at 141/8—just eight runs away from glory.
As the Mumbai Indians celebrated their back-to-back WPL titles, Meg Lanning stood motionless at the dugout, her eyes reflecting a mix of disappointment and disbelief. She had led from the front all season, yet the trophy continued to elude her team.
“It’s tough,” she admitted later in the press conference. “We fought hard, but we didn’t execute well in key moments. Credit to Mumbai, they held their nerve when it mattered most.”
For Delhi Capitals, this was their third straight loss in a WPL final. The pain of coming so close, yet falling short once again, was evident on every player’s face. They had given it their all, but destiny had other plans.
As the dust settled on another dramatic final, one thing was clear—Delhi Capitals would be back, hungrier than ever. But for now, the night belonged to Mumbai, and Meg Lanning was left to ponder what might have been.
