India beat Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first Test of the two-match series on Sunday (Sep 22). Chasing a daunting 515, Bangladesh were bowled out for 234 shortly before lunch on day 4 with Ravi Ashwin taking his 37th career five-for. Ashwin, who had scored a century in the first innings, finished with the figures of 6/88.

Bangladesh resumed day 4 from the overnight score of 158/4 with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan on the crease.

It was Ashwin who broke the 48-run partnership to dismiss Shakib for 25. The visitors gave in soon after that with Ravindra Jadeja removing Litton Das in quick succession.

Ashwin then dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz to complete his five-for before Jadeja removed Shanto (82) to dash any remaining resistance from Bangladesh. The spinner then took one each of the rest of the two wickets to wrap up the Bangladesh innings.

Bangladesh had started the chase in a defiant manner, adding 62 runs for the first wicket - the most ever for them against India.

It was Jasprit Bumrah who broke the partnership with the help of Yashasvi Jaiswal who took a superb catch in gully to dismiss Zakir Hasan.

Ravi Ashwin then took the next three wickets to leave Bangladesh's batting wanting for more before skipper Shanto and veteran all-rounder Shakib took them to the end of play without further loss. Shanto also completed his 50 and was unbeaten on 51 at the end of play.

Earlier, India started day 3 on a positive note with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant continuing from where they had left on day 2.

India eventually declared at 287/4 half-time into the second session with both Pant and Gill scoring their respective centuries.

In the first innings, India were 144/6 at one stage before Jadeja and Ashwin added 199-run for the seventh wicket to post 376. They then bowled out Bangladesh for 149, taking a lead of 227 runs.
