Explained: How New Zealand's win over Australia favours Team India in ongoing Women's T20 World Cup

The Women’s T20 World Cup is up and running in the UAE as 10 teams are battling for the ultimate glory in the shortest format of the game. It wasn’t a pleasing start for the Indian women’s team at the T20 World Cup after they lost to New Zealand in their opening contest but quickly bounced back with a win against arch-rivals Pakistan. However, the Women in Blue will now have to turn cheerleaders for New Zealand as they prepare to face Australia in another mouth-watering Group A contest.

Why does New Zealand win favours India?

As things stand in the T20 World Cup Group A, India are fourth in the standings with two points and despite their win over Pakistan, it is the arch-rivals who sit third (also with two points). According to the current format, only the top two will advance into the semis with other teams facing elimination. With two matches in hand, India can reach a maximum of six points if they beat both Australia and Sri Lanka.

However, there is a catch, if Australia beat New Zealand on Tuesday (Oct 8) they will have four points. Considering Australia as favourites against Pakistan, the Aussies will have six points before they face India in the final group game on Sunday (Oct 13). This means India must beat both Sri Lanka and Australia, with the latter win coming by a big margin to avoid a deadlock situation on Net Run Rate (NRR).

In case New Zealand beat Australia, the former champions will likely enter the final group game against India with four points (provided India beat Sri Lanka). However, in this case, it will be a winner-take-all contest as the NRR won’t play a crucial role unless Pakistan win both their matches.

Considering case two as a more favourable scenario, India will be hoping for a New Zealand win against Australia in Sharjah.
