Samsung posts disappointing third-quarter profit guidance amid market challenges

Samsung

Samsung Electronics, a leading South Korean technology giant, revealed that its anticipated profit for the third quarter of 2024 is set to disappoint investors on October 7. The company forecasts an operating profit of approximately 9.10 trillion won (around $6.5 billion), a notable increase from last year's figure of 2.43 trillion won. However, this projection falls significantly short of analysts' expectations, which estimated an operating profit of 11.456 trillion won (approximately $7.7 billion) for the period ending September 30 as detailed in a report by CNBC.

The forecast highlights ongoing challenges in the memory chip sector, where Samsung is the foremost manufacturer. According to estimates from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), the company's revenue for the quarter is expected to be around 81.96 trillion won (about $61 billion).

This decline in profitability is particularly concerning given Samsung's position as the second-largest player in the global smartphone market and its critical role in supplying memory chips essential for devices such as laptops and servers.

Analysts from Macquarie Equity Research have pointed out that Samsung must navigate its memory supply management carefully, especially as the traditional dynamic random access memory (DRAM) market faces downturns. DRAM is widely used in laptops, workstations, and PCs, and any significant decline could adversely affect Samsung more than its smaller competitors.

Samsung might look towards reducing the workforce

The report further stated that, in light of these challenges, reports have emerged indicating that Samsung has instructed its global subsidiaries to reduce their workforce by 30 per cent in certain divisions. This strategic move aims to streamline operations and cut costs amid declining demand for memory chips.

Year-to-date, shares of Samsung Electronics have plummeted by 22 per cent on South Korea's stock exchange, reflecting investor concerns over the company's profitability and market position. The anticipated third-quarter results are expected to provide further insights into how Samsung plans to address these issues moving forward.

Therefore, as the technology landscape continues to evolve, Samsung's ability to adapt will be crucial in maintaining its competitive edge. The company is scheduled to release its comprehensive third-quarter results later this month, which will shed light on its strategies and performance amid a challenging economic environment.

Hence, while Samsung Electronics shows a year-on-year increase in profits, the company's failure to meet analyst expectations raises questions about its future trajectory in an increasingly competitive market. With significant workforce reductions and a focus on memory supply management, stakeholders will be closely watching how Samsung navigates these turbulent waters in the months ahead.
