Seoul Robotics, a leader in industrial autonomous driving technology, has successfully implemented the United States' first LiDAR-controlled traffic signal system. The innovative installation, located at the intersection of State Street and 5900 South in Murray, Utah, represents a significant leap forward in smart city infrastructure and traffic flow optimisation.

Initiated by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), this project addresses the pressing need for advanced sensor technology capable of detecting, counting, and tracking vehicles and other road users in all weather conditions. The system, powered by Seoul Robotics' cutting-edge 3D Perception Engine, utilises LiDAR sensors positioned at each corner of the intersection to create a real-time digital twin, enabling precise traffic flow management and congestion reduction.

The implementation of this advanced traffic management system is the result of a collaborative effort between Seoul Robotics, Gades Sales Company, and Blue Band. Gades Sales Company, serving as the local distributor, played a crucial role in the installation process and ensuring seamless integration with existing infrastructure. Blue-Band's software acts as a vital interface, translating data processed by Seoul Robotics' 3D Perception Engine into signal commands compatible with standard traffic controllers used throughout the United States.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this deployment is its non-invasive nature. The system can be mounted directly onto existing infrastructure, minimising disruption to public roads and significantly reducing installation time. The entire setup process is expected to take just two working days for future implementations, showcasing the efficiency and scalability of the solution.

Since its installation in March 2024, the LiDAR-based system has been operating flawlessly, demonstrating its reliability and effectiveness. The technology supports a range of advanced traffic management features, including precise stop-bar detection, advanced vehicle detection up to 300 feet from the stop bar, and red light running prevention. Perhaps most impressively, the system boasts a vehicle counting accuracy of 99.8% at the stop bar, providing traffic engineers with unprecedented levels of data precision.

Lee Han-bin, CEO of Seoul Robotics, expressed his satisfaction with the system's performance, stating, "Our LiDAR-based traffic management system has consistently demonstrated excellent detection and tracking of objects, ensuring reliable performance across all weather conditions. This technology not only meets but exceeds the demands of modern traffic systems."

Beyond vehicle management, the system also enhances safety for Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) such as pedestrians and cyclists. By accurately counting and monitoring VRUs at crosswalks and curbsides, the technology provides crucial data for traffic engineers to improve intersection design and safety. This capability paves the way for intelligent crossings where traffic controllers can adjust green light durations based on the specific mobility needs of pedestrians.
