Chinese and European automakers are vying to sell people on their latest electric vehicle (EV) models at the Paris Auto Show, which has a focus on innovation in the face of slowing demand and looming EU tariffs on Chinese EVs. Around 50 premieres will be on show at the event, which is Europe’s largest, reflecting the industry’s move towards electrification.

Chinese Innovations

Debuting the mid-sized SUV Sea Lion 07, a rival to Tesla Model Y, Chinese EV powerhouse BYD is also introducing the luxury plug-in hybrid SUV Yangwang U8 equipped with four independent electric motors that can move sideways and float in emergencies in water. 

The second generation of GAC's compact electric crossover, the Aion V, provides an outstanding range of up to 750 kilometers (466 miles), which is another significant entry. China’s Rolls-Royce Hongqi will display the models of its electric lineup, including the 5.2-meter long E-HS9 and models EH7 and EHS7. Compact EV T03 and new electric SUVs, the C10 and B10, from start-up Leapmotor also make an entry.

European Highlights

Renault also rolls out its small electric SUV, the R4, and the Dacia Bigster SUV on the European front, which takes what was once a classic Renault 4 from the 1960s in a modern direction. Alpine, Renault’s sporty division, will debut a concept of its upcoming A390 fastback, which will be its second fully electric model.

The seven seater Tayron SUV, available in mild hybrid and plug in hybrid guises, will go on sale in early 2019 from EURO 45,475 (USD 49,763). The compact Citroën C4 and C4X will launch in hybrid and electric versions and, on combustion, and it was announced by Stellantis. The Hypersquare, Peugeot's new rectangular steering wheel that is set to hit showrooms in 2026, is making headlines.
