Maruti Suzuki begins export of Made-in-India Fronx SUV to Japan

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has recently kicked off the export of its globally acclaimed SUV, Fronx, to Japan and this is a major victory for the the country's 'Make in India' campaign. This shift marks the first time that a Maruti Suzuki SUV will be launched in the Japanese market, which would be significant for both – the company and the Indian production.

The newly constructed Gujarat plant that manufactures only the Fronx for the domestic market sent out the first order of over 1,600 vehicles to Japan from the Pipavav port. This export comes on the heels of Maruti Suzuki’s launch of Baleno model to the Japanese market in 2016 making the Fronx the second vehicle of this car maker to be ferried in Japan.

Slated for a Japan launch by Suzuki Motor Corporation, Maruti Suzuki’s parent company, in autumn 2024, the Fronx’s entry also highlights the growing export credibility of Indian auto manufacturing.

Moreover, there is the factor of export performance where, to date, Maruti Suzuki stands as the leader. During the financial year 2023-24, the company exported vehicles in excess of 280,000 to over 100 countries, thus enhancing the company’s market share to 42% for exporting passenger vehicle in India. More to the point, Maruti Suzuki achieved an export high of 70,560 units in Q1 of FY 2024-25.
