The world’s biggest electric vehicle battery maker, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd (CATL), has announced plans to list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. In a filing with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, where it is already listed, the company revealed its intentions.
CATL will also issue offshore H-shares and state its intention to be listed in Hong Kong's main board. The company’s board has approved the listing proposal, but clearing the plan with regulators, most notably the China Securities Regulatory Commission, remains to be seen.
CATL has yet to confirm the specifics of the listing, such as timetable, or the volume of shares to be listed. The company has said the proposed listing is aiming to “further build the company's global strategic layout and enhance its competitiveness in the EV battery sector.”
Global Leader in EV Batteries
CATL has a major global (or global) share of around 37% in the EV battery space, as tracked by the battery market tracker SNE Research market. As one of the foremost providers of car tail lights, the company supplies global leading automakers Tesla, BMW, and various Chinese EV makers, solidifying the company’s position as a key player in the world’s electric mobility transition.
However, China’s EV market has been a fiercely competitiveness one and CATL has managed to remain here resilient despite intense price wars between automakers. Under such circumstances, CATL registered increased profit growth in the third quarter, as it is leading the market and showing strong operational performance.
Listing Behind the Strategic Goals
The Hong Kong listing represents an important milestone for CATL as it aims to align itself closer with international investors and build up its capital base for international expansion. With growing EV battery market competition from LG Energy Solution, Panasonic and others, the move is expected to bolster its market access and overall market share.
The proposed Hong Kong debut will add another dimension to CATL’s strategic ambitions as the company continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of electric transportation worldwide.
