Thousands of Gen Z protesters took to the streets across 34 German cities, demanding better education, lower living costs and an end to compulsory military service. The demonstrations turned violent in Frankfurt, where hooded rioters looted stores and damaged several shops

Hooded rioters looted stores in Frankfurt late on Saturday after tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across Germany's biggest cities to demand better education and lower living costs. The protests followed a wave of Gen Z-led ‌demonstrations across Europe this year. In Serbia, student-led activism helped unseat the country's longtime leader at the ballot box, while protests in France have descended into rioting and looting. The German protests organised by the campaign group "Gen Z regelt" — "Gen Z takes charge" in German — took place in 34 cities including Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich. The group says it opposes compulsory military service and wants greater investment in education as many young Germans struggle with rising costs. In Frankfurt, Germany's financial hub, at least two stores were looted as protests turned violent, with several more damaged and police trying to get the situation under control, according to a Reuters witness. "Violent disturbances are continuing," Frankfurt police said on X. "In the city centre, windows have been smashed at several shops. Molotov cocktails are also being thrown at the emergency services. We urge all bystanders to avoid the city centre or to leave the area."Official numbers on Saturday afternoon suggested turnout was below the 182,000 participants that organisers initially expected. Police in Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin reported as many as 18,000 protesters, half the roughly 36,000 on the organisers' website. German authorities said Saturday's demonstrations, which coincide with Halloween festivities, had been largely peaceful, but warned of attempts by extremist groups to exploit the movement. Iran's top security official, Mohsen Rezaei, said the United States has "completely shifted tone" in a letter from Vice President JD Vance, according to Al Jazeera. It is the first on-the-record Iranian reaction to the overture. Trick or vote? White House Halloween celebrations unfold days before crucial US midterm elections

Just 3 days ahead of the US midterm, the two biggest prediction markets agree on the looming blue wave. Kalshi shows Democrats at 94% for the House and 72% for the Senate, and Polymarket shows about 93-94% and 68-69%. Kalshi's American Power Index reads Leaning Democratic +7.4, a sharp reversal from Leaning Republican +7.6 in early January. A Democratic sweep is priced near 70%. A Republican sweep sits at about 6%, and a Republican House with a Democratic Senate at about 1%. If Republicans manage a House hold, it would almost certainly arrive together with a Senate hold.
What Republicans need in the Senate?
Republicans hold 53 seats, and Democrats need a net gain of four. A net gain of three leaves a 50-50 split, which Vice President JD Vance breaks for the GOP. So Republicans can lose no more than three seats on net. The markets favour Democrats in North Carolina, Maine and Alaska. If those three fall, Republicans would have to hold every other contested seat: Ohio, Texas, Iowa and Kansas. Texas is the hardest of those to hold, with Kalshi giving Democrat James Talarico 70% over Republican Ken Paxton's 30%. GOP is now focusing on the gain of the Hispanic voter base in 2024 to offset the loss. Republicans will hope Trump's campaign blitz will allow them to gain the lost ground. Trump has conducted around 26 in-person rallies and 6 phone ins in the last 30 days to boost voter turnout in favour of Reds. Trump's yesterday's move of cancellation of rallies and the last-minute reversal reflect the tension in Red heartland of Iowa and Kansas. Alternatively, they would have to flip a Democratic seat such as Michigan to offset a loss. Trump would be looking to consolidate the working-class, white voters who have been the main voter base of the GOP in 2024 by projecting Democrats as overly radical. At least one Democrat held seat in Michigan is hinting at a flip, as Trump and Nicki Minaj tried to sway the voters earlier this week. Republicans need polls and markets to be wrong for Democrats across nearly every tight race, from Texas, Kansas and Iowa to the suburban House seats. Also Read: PM Modi says India has fulfilled pledge to end Naxalism and Maoism
What Republicans need in the House?
Republicans will need nothing short of a miracle to reverse the prediction in the House. Cook's October 30, 2026, map has shifted even further in favour of a potential Democratic "Blue Wave". GOP needs 218 seats, and they hold a 218-214 edge today. Cook's latest ratings favour Democrats in 222 seats, among them 186 Solid, 18 Likely, and 18 Lean Democratic entries. By that count, Republicans would need to win all 18 toss-ups and also take at least 5 seats Cook currently rates as Democratic-favoured. Redistricting was projected to net Republicans four to five seats, and they would still need a repeat of 2020, when they won eight of the nine closest races. The miracle could come if Trump surprisingly secures a deal with Iran just ahead of the election that opens the Hormuz and projects the US as winners. Speaker Mike Johnson has said he expects Republicans to defy history. Nearly every forecaster and trader disagrees. According to reports, a diplomatic breakthrough with Iran is being actively negotiated just days before the election, though a finalised deal has not yet been reached.

The electoral triumph of Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva and the jubilant return of Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado have brought in sharp focus that the US President wields less influence over Latin America than he and his team believe. Both cases dealt a blow to the Donroe Doctrine, a plan first articulated in last November’s National Security Strategy. It is meant to establish a US “sphere of influence” and takes its name from the 200-year-old Monroe Doctrine, originally was established to keep European powers out of the Americas. The Donroe doctrine goes further.Let’s start with Brazil, Latin America’s most populous country, where the elections pitted de Silva, popularly known as Lula, against Flavio Bolsonaro, whose father, Jair, was president from 2019 to 2023. Self-described as the Trump of the Tropics, Jair was sentenced to 27 years in prison for planning a coup to keep in power after losing elections.According to Reuters, quoting current and former US officials, the US Department of State led a campaign to tilt the elections in Flavio’s favour. State Department officials told diplomats it was US policy to back a member of the Bolsonaro family. While Flavio won the first round of the vote, Lula won the second and overall, more than five million votes ahead of his right-wing opponent. Brazilian Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered Flavio to surrender his passport. But before that happened, he fled the country to Miami. The US immediately granted him and his family visas. With Lula in charge for the next four years, the Donroe Doctrine’s aim “ to restore American preeminence in the Western Hemisphere,” as the National Security Strategy put it, remains wishful thinking. Washington fears that Brazil will tilt further to China, which overtook the US as Brazil’s largest trading partner in 2009.How far that tilt will go and what Washington can do to stop it remains to be seen. The result of the October 25 elections brought to mind a statement by Lula at the end of a G-20 meeting he hosted in 2024—“Trump was elected president of the United States, not emperor of the world.”In his victory speech, Lula told thousands of supporters that “we are no one’s backyard,” a reference to a US habit over the years to describe Latin America as the backyard of the US. But it also means that the leftist Brazilian leader does not want to tie his country too closely to any of the world’s superpowers. The other country that throws doubt over the efficiency of the Donroe Doctrine and Trump’s influence is Venezuela, in particular its most popular politician, Maria Corina Machado. She won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela.”Machado had been under a strict travel ban imposed by her country’s dictatorial ruler, Nicolas Maduro and had to be smuggled out in December 2025 by a complicated route worked out by a private rescue team to travel to Oslo to receive her prize. Blocked from returning, she spent 10 months in self-exile in Panama. While she was there, a team of US Special Operations forces captured Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores in a meticulously planned and meticulously executed operation that lasted just two and a half hours on January 3. They were flown to New York to face charges of narco-terrorism and cocaine trafficking. Two weeks later, Machado visited the White House and presented her prize, in a gold-framed plaque, to Trump. The dedication read “presented as a symbol of gratitude on behalf of the Venezuelan people in recognition of President Trump’s principled and decisive action to secure a free Venezuela.”The Nobel committee swiftly commented that while it was legitimate to hand over the medal, the prize itself could not be shared. If Machado expected that a grateful Trump would push for her to return to Venezuela in a leading role on the way to democracy, she was disappointed. Washington instead opted to make Maduro’s Vice President, Delcy Rodriguez, Acting President. The repressive state institution she and Maduro built up over years remained unchanged. Trump has established close ties with Rodriguez who is eager to comply with Trump’s wishes and swiftly changed Venezuela’s hydrocarbon law to invite more American investment. She made a deal, denounced as questionable by critics, to give the US government, through a private company, the rights to exploit 17 oilfields. Large shares of Venezuela’s oil wealth will go to the US in line with Trump’s oft-repeated assertion that “to the victor belong the spoils.”Where does the cosy Rodriguez-Trump relationship leave Machado, who returned to Venezuela on Sunday (Nov.25) to greetings by thousands of jubilant supporters. Her return can be seen as an act of defiance because Trump repeatedly made clear he would prefer her to stay away. His comment on the joyous welcome she received spoke volumes: “She’s a very nice woman. But we are doing really well in Venezuela.”I translate that as “Delcy will do what we say. Corina probably won’t.”

A 'blue tsunami' in the 2026 US midterms is defined in political models and prediction markets as Democrats reaching at least 235 House seats and a 51-seat Senate majority to hold their vulnerable territory. Meanwhile, Republicans entered the cycle with a 53–47 Senate majority. Therefore, Democrats need a net gain of 4 seats to secure 51, while defending their own vulnerable seats. In the House, reaching 235 seats requires sweeping competitive toss-up seats and expanding deep into Lean/Likely Republican districts. According to Kalshi as of October 28, 2026, traders priced the probability of a "blue tsunami" (at least 235 House seats and 51 Senate seats) at 55 per cent, while the baseline "blue wave" threshold stood at 81 per cent. Polymarket confirmed that trader-implied probability for a blue tsunami outcome was priced at 63 per cent. Also read: US Midterm Elections 2026: Kansas, Texas, Ohio and more - The 10 closest races in America and why they matter
What does expected data say?
Similarly, an election model update published by Decision Desk HQ on October 12, 2026, showed that Democrats held a 76 per cent chance of winning the House, with a favoured projection of 235 House seats. According to an expert panel compiled by The New York Times Opinion on October 26, 2026, forecasters offered varying projections for the midterm elections. Nate Silver projected Democrats would win 240 House seats and 52 Senate seats, while Carlos Odio forecast 235 House seats and 52 Senate seats. Patrick Ruffini predicted a somewhat narrower outcome of 234 House seats and 51 Senate seats, and Lynn Vavreck offered the most conservative estimate among the group, projecting 229 House seats and 51 Senate seats. Around 5000 Palestiians have been displaced from their homes in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron since an Israeli military operation and lockdown began last week, according to local authorities cited by Al Zareea. The raids, restrictions and demolitions continue for the ninth consecutive day on Saturday as Palestinian officials continue to call for international pressure on Israel. The displacement count has climbed since the operation began. On the first day, Hebron's mayor said about 2,200 people had been forced out, while Katz put the figure at roughly 2,000. The Palestinian Prisoner's Society said those forced out included 127 infants, 81 pregnant women and 26 people with disabilities. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly favour further weakening Iran, while Vice President JD Vance and envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner support renewed negotiations. Trump has remained cautious about the prospects of an agreement. “There are talks. They want to talk. They keep talking. ... We have time, frankly. It’s a war, but it is not a typical war,” he told reporters on Friday. The diplomatic push comes amid fears that renewed strikes could draw Israel and other Gulf countries into a wider confrontation, threatening regional stability and global energy supplies.

Reports suggest the US and Iran could hold direct talks in Doha after progress in Qatar-mediated negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear programme, Strait of Hormuz and sanctions relief.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he is open to the country issuing a formal apology for its role in the transatlantic slave trade but ruled out financial compensation for its historical involvement. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday condemned the disruption of global oil supplies through sanctions and maritime chokepoints, calling deliberate attacks on energy trade and infrastructure a "calculated strategy to hold prices hostage."“Emphasised that continuous distortions of energy markets through obstacles, sanctions & chokepoints are happening with increasing frequency, greater complexity & wider impact,” Jaishankar mentioned in a post on X about his speech at the G20 Plenary. Earlier in September, US President Donald Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which threatened tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil and backed out of it within a month. Jaishankar urged the G20 to show understanding and leadership to keep energy markets "open and predictable." He also stressed that India needs reliable LPG supplies for clean cooking. On critical minerals, he reiterated India's National Mission, which covers exploration and recycling. He also spoke about a proposed G20 Critical Minerals Circularity Initiative. The comments add to India's wider pushback against unilateral trade measures. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has argued that tariffs imposed unilaterally must follow World Trade Organisation rules, as India faces a 10% US "forced labour" tariff and an American probe into alleged excess capacity.

On October 12 (Monday) in Youngstown, Ohio, former Super Bowl-winning coach Jon Gruden introduced the president and noted that he and Husted had been college teammates."I'm standing over here, and I don't do this with men very often.
