At a time when European governments are increasingly worried about Russia’s actions, an unexpected message has reportedly come from Washington. The Trump administration wants some of its closest NATO allies to be more restrained in how they speak about Moscow, even as concerns grow over the threat Russia poses to the continent.According to Reuters, citing people familiar with the discussions, Pentagon officials have privately urged Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to tone down their public statements about Russia, arguing that some remarks by European leaders could undermine regional security.
US warns against provoking Moscow
One official told Reuters that Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby had recently advised a Baltic official against “poking” Russia. India and Australia are sharpening their ability to operate together across coastal, island and jungle environments through Exercise AustraHind 2026, combining military training with humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The 14-day exercise, running from October 19 to November 1 at Thiruvananthapuram, brings together the Indian Army’s Garhwal Rifles and Australia’s 13th Infantry Brigade. Participation by the Indian Navy and Kerala Fire and Rescue Services adds an important dimension: coordinating military and civilian capabilities during emergencies.
Partnership on India’s terms
Speaking on WION’s Defence Pulse, Major General Neeraj Bali, Sena Medal (Retd.), Indian Army veteran and Director of Chakra Strategic Forum, emphasised that the partnership serves shared operational interests rather than an agenda against another nation. “These exercises and this whole equation is not directed against any country”, Gen.
Training for combat and contingencies
Troops have progressed from physical conditioning and tactical drills to sea and air insertion, practising coordinated movement and mission execution in demanding terrain.Gen. Bali identified the geographical focus as significant. Training for island territories and coastal environments, he explained, it presents different challenges from urban or desert operations. The exercise also includes rescue operations, casualty evacuation and coordinated emergency response. For India, these skills strengthen preparedness for contingencies across a disaster-prone maritime neighbourhood. Gen. Bali highlighted disaster relief as another area where Indian and Australian interests converge. Also Read: US midterms: Pope Leo XIV votes by mail, makes history as first pontiff to do so
Trust built before a crisis
Drawing on his experience leading an Indian brigade during an exercise in Hawaii in 2008, Gen. It is something you got to train for,” he said. For him, the strongest dividend is trust. Israel has voted. Benjamin Netanyahu has survived another election. But the country's political future remains deeply uncertain. The final count from Tuesday's parliamentary election has delivered a fragmented Knesset, with Netanyahu's right-wing bloc securing 53 seats, eight short of the 61 required for a majority.Gadi Eisenkot's opposition bloc has 48 seats, while Arab-led parties have made historic gains, securing 19.The arithmetic is straightforward. The politics are anything but.Netanyahu's Likud remains the largest individual party, but his existing coalition no longer commands a parliamentary majority. And that raises an uncomfortable question: can Israel's longest-serving prime minister build another government without abandoning some of his political allies or persuading his rivals to join him?The unprecedented showing by Arab-led parties has complicated that calculation.Their parliamentary strength could provide the opposition with a path to power. But cooperation between Jewish opposition parties and Arab-led factions remains politically contentious.Netanyahu has warned against such an arrangement, while his critics accuse him of attempting to delegitimise Arab political participation.Meanwhile, allegations of election interference have further inflamed tensions. Israeli election authorities have stressed that the ongoing investigation does not affect the final vote count.President Isaac Herzog must now oversee consultations aimed at identifying a candidate capable of forming a government.A unity government, an opposition arrangement supported by Arab parties, or prolonged negotiations ending in another election all remain possible. The implications extend beyond Israel. Gaza's future, tensions with Iran, relations with Washington and the broader regional security landscape could all be affected by the direction of Israel's next government. For Netanyahu, remaining in office is not the same as securing another governing mandate. For Eisenkot, opposing Netanyahu is easier than assembling a workable coalition. And for Arab-led parties, historic electoral representation has created an opportunity whose political consequences remain uncertain.Israel's voters have delivered their decision. Now its political leaders must determine whether they can translate that decision into a government. Because winning an election is one thing. Governing a divided country is quite another.

On October 20 and 21, soldiers from the US 3rd Corps Sustainment Command and the 20th Engineer Brigade ran Phase II of Operation Dragon Covenant, a test of large-scale temporary burial. Preventive medicine teams, chaplains and mortuary affairs specialists joined them. The practice was not used at scale since the Korean War. Engineers used D6 bulldozers to dig trenches and then backfill them over mock remains made of skeletal models and sealed water containers. The goal was to keep the remains intact so forensic teams could later recover, identify and return them to families.Trenches holding 20 remains took an average of one hour and 15 minutes to prepare. In earlier trials with standard backhoes, a single trench of ten remains took about three hours. From that pace, planners estimate that a unit with eight bulldozers and four military excavators, working around the clock, could prepare and close trenches for up to 2,400 remains in 24 hours. Also Read: Trump says Iran war will end ‘one way or another’, claims Tehran started it in 1979 Religious affairs specialists were built into the workflow as well. Evacuations began in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky on Friday (Oct 30), allowing civilians trapped by years of fighting to leave under a temporary truce negotiated with the involvement of US First Lady Melania Trump. Humanitarian teams entered the devastated city with food, medicines and other emergency supplies as preparations were made to move residents out.The evacuation effort has brought representatives from Moscow and Kyiv together in an unusual humanitarian operation. China’s unconventional, partially submersible trimaran could present a new challenge for naval surveillance and maritime warfare, Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha (Retd.) said on WION’s Defence Pulse, assessing a design whose capabilities remain unconfirmed. The discussion was based on a Naval News report examining satellite imagery supplied by Vantor. The report assessed an unusual three-hulled vessel and its possible configuration as a missile-carrying submersible platform. Sinha, Trustee, India Foundation, former FOC-in-C, Western Naval Command, and former Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, compared its appearance with an arsenal ship, a platform designed around substantial missile firepower. “It resembles the American design of an Arsenal ship,” he said, while emphasising the Chinese vessel’s potentially different operating characteristics.

Missile load and potential targets
The discussion examined estimates that the vessel could accommodate around 16 missiles. Sinha considered such a load technically plausible, but its actual armament has not been publicly established. He also raised the possibility of hypersonic weapons, explicitly describing his assessment as “my own hunch”. “If it is hypersonic,” he said, the potential targets could include “both important land targets and the bigger, larger targets of the United States Navy”. The distinction matters because a vessel’s military significance depends on its weapons and operational endurance, rather than its unusual shape alone. The challenge of finding it Sinha argued that partial submergence should not automatically be equated with easy detection. “It’s not very easy, you know, to get after a submersible in the middle of the ocean,” he said. He also cautioned against simplistic assumptions about targeting major warships. “Finding an aircraft carrier is not a joke.” Discussing the Chinese platform’s possible underwater behaviour, Sinha suggested its signatures could complicate detection. These were assessments, not verified measurements of its stealth or propulsion. Also Read: Rain postpones INDIA bloc’s ‘public impeachment’ of CEC Gyanesh Kumar
New questions for naval planners
For Sinha, the design’s significance lies in the tactical questions it raises: how it might operate, when it would be vulnerable and how opposing forces would locate it. “They will have to start reworking their tactics,” he said. He nevertheless acknowledged the limits of the available evidence. “We don’t know the full potential.” Sinha also highlighted the potential role of Chinese satellite networks in supporting the vessel’s targeting and missile guidance. His assessment suggests the platform’s firepower would depend partly on information supplied from space, rather than onboard sensors alone. The reported vessel therefore remains an emerging development to watch, with its missile configuration, degree of autonomy and ability to submerge still requiring confirmation.

The official cause of the fire and the total extent of property damage remain under investigation. According to Asghar, a local shopkeeper, who spoke to Geo News, the affected market consists of 20 shops set up on a commercial plot. He estimated that the incident resulted in financial losses running into crores of rupees. Asghar noted that emergency services were contacted via the police helpline (Madadgar-15), but reported that firefighters took 15 to 20 minutes to reach the scene, allowing the flames to spread rapidly through the market area. On December 31, 2024, a massive blaze destroyed more than 30 shops at the market, though no casualties occurred in that instance either. The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding fire safety infrastructure across Karachi's commercial hubs. Following a deadly fire at Gul Plaza earlier this year, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah ordered a province-wide safety audit and reinstated annual mandatory inspections for commercial premises. Consequently, authorities issued warnings to over 300 building owners, leading to enforcement actions—including the sealing of two major commercial structures in the Saddar area in February—for non-compliance with safety regulations.

Netanyahu faces difficult coalition negotiations
Netanyahu’s coalition of right-wing and far-right parties secured 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, with his Likud party winning 27. The opposition bloc, led by centrist Gadi Eisenkot, won 48 seats. The Arab party groupings Raam and the Joint List emerged as potential kingmakers after securing a combined 19 seats. However, neither major bloc has reached the 61 seats required to form a government, raising the possibility of prolonged negotiations or another election if talks fail. The final results came after Netanyahu’s camp amplified allegations that Arab-Israeli groups had received foreign funding to influence the vote. The claims were rejected by the Arab-majority lists and Qatar. The controversy centred on accusations that Qatar had provided money to Raam to finance vote-buying operations. Likud described the allegations as the “Raamgate scandal”, saying: “The Raamgate scandal is a political earthquake. Israel's elections have been stolen!” Raam leader Mansour Abbas denied wrongdoing and welcomed an investigation. The Joint List accused Netanyahu and his allies of running a “campaign of incitement” because of growing political influence among Arab voters. Qatar dismissed the accusations as “ridiculous and dangerous”. Also Read: Rain postpones INDIA bloc’s ‘public impeachment’ of CEC Gyanesh Kumar
Lapid declares opposition victory
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid has claimed that the anti-Netanyahu camp won the election, arguing that the prime minister has no viable route to forming a government. In a lengthy post on X on Friday, Lapid acknowledged that his camp had not secured an outright majority but said the results marked a political victory. He also highlighted the voter turnout of 77.7 per cent, which he described as the highest since 1999. “The people showed up,” Lapid said. He argued that Netanyahu’s 53 seats included 13 won by parties that openly describe themselves as non-Zionist, leaving the prime minister with only 40 seats from his own political camp. “No matter what he does, he has nowhere to pull a government from,” Lapid said. Declaring victory for the opposition, he added: “So we won. It's not a knockout victory. It's a points victory. That counts too. A win is a win.”

Several patrons at a Chili’s restaurant in North Carolina suffered chemical burns after drinking beverages prepared with a cleaning chemical that was mistaken for sugar, officials confirmed to ABC 13 News. The incident occurred at the chain's Forest City location. According to a press release from the Foothills Health District, preliminary information indicates that on Monday, Oct. 26, an employee received a "granulated degreasing chemical" from a contractor who was power-washing the exterior of the restaurant. The employee placed the substance into an unlabelled container, which was then brought inside and left near the bar area, public health officials stated. Another employee preparing the bar for lunch service found the container and used the chemical to make margaritas, believing it was sugar. Three customers suffered chemical burns after drinking margaritas made with an industrial cleaning chemical mistaken for sugar or salt at a Chili’s in Forest City, North Carolina.

Three customers ordered the drinks and "immediately experienced discomfort," suffering chemical burns in and around their mouths. The patrons notified staff and left to seek immediate medical attention. In just three days, starting with Election Day on November 3, America and the world will know whether the 'midterm curse' strikes US President Donald Trump's Republican Party or whether they escape unscathed, retaining control of Congress. For viewers in India, the biggest challenge on US election night will be the time difference. When Americans head to vote, and the first results start emerging, Indians will be fast asleep. The first US polling stations are scheduled to close at 6 pm Eastern Time on Tuesday, November 3. That translates to 4:30 am on Wednesday, November 4, in India. The final scheduled closures, in parts of Alaska, will come at 1 am Eastern Time, or 11:30 am IST.That gives Indian viewers an election-night window stretching from the early hours of Wednesday morning into late morning. But the results will not arrive all at once. Polls close in waves across the country, and the order in which states shut their polling stations will offer the first indication of how the races are shaping up.Also read | US Midterms 2026: US witnesses 122 gun deaths every day, so why aren't shootings dominating the US election debate?
When will polls close? All 435 voting seats are up for election, and control of the chamber will depend on the outcome of dozens of competitive district contests across the country. The large 6:30 am IST and 7:30 am IST windows will be particularly important for tracking the House map.
Why the 'midterm curse' matters for Trump
Midterm elections are held halfway through a US president's four-year term. Historically, the president's party has often lost seats in Congress during these elections, making the results an important test of the administration's standing and its ability to govern. For Trump, the outcome will determine whether Republicans retain control of Congress and how much room his administration has to push its legislative agenda. If Democrats gain control of either chamber, they could exercise greater oversight of the administration, influence spending and legislation, and shape congressional investigations. The House has 435 voting members, and 218 seats are required for a majority. In the Senate, 100 seats are divided into three election classes. In 2026, 34 regular Senate seats are up for election, alongside a special election in Ohio. A party generally needs 51 seats for a majority, although the vice-president can break a 50-50 tie.
Polls closing does not mean results are final
One of the most important things to remember while following US election coverage from India is that a poll closing time is not a result declaration. It simply means voting has ended at the scheduled time and election officials can proceed with counting and reporting.Early leads, while insightful at times, can be misleading. Some states count or report mail-in ballots at different stages from in-person votes. As a result, the first batches of votes may not reflect the final statewide picture. A candidate who leads early could lose that advantage as more ballots are counted.Viewers must also distinguish between a media projection and an official result. News organisations may call a race when their analysis indicates that the remaining uncounted votes are not enough to change the outcome. That is not the same as the state formally certifying the result.Close contests can take hours or even days to resolve. Recounts, outstanding mail ballots and narrow margins can delay a definitive outcome. Therefore, a state showing a candidate ahead is not necessarily a state that has been called. Also read | US Midterms 2026: Dead for years, paedophile Jeffrey Epstein finds mention in over 500 campaign ads; Texas alone spent $10 million
When should viewers in India tune in?
For those following the election live, the first alarm would need to be set for 4:30 am IST on Wednesday, November 4, when the first polls close in parts of Indiana and Kentucky. The most consequential early window will begin around 5:30 am IST and continue through 7:30 am IST, as large groups of states close their polls and key Senate, governor and House races begin reporting. One of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, Mayon, fired a dark column of ash over thousands of metres into the sky in a "moderately explosive eruption" on Friday (October 30). The eruption lasted nearly six minutes, sending alert status up to Level 3 in Albay, according to the state seismology office. Following the eruption, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in towns and in the vicinity of Mount Mayon. In response, the country's volcano institute raised the alert level from 2 to 3 on its 0-5 scale, calling for evacuations within six kilometres (3.7 miles) of the crater.

New phase of magmatic eruption
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology confirmed in its bulletin that the 3,000-metre (nearly 10,000 feet) ash column gradually moved southwest onto nearby population centres. "Mayon is in a new phase of magmatic eruption, with increased chances of lava flows and hazardous PDCs (pyroclastic density currents)... affecting the upper to middle slopes of the volcano in the immediate days to weeks," the bulletin said. It called on local officials to evacuate areas near the crater, citing the threat "due to PDCs, lava flows, rockfalls and other volcanic hazards", and warned aircraft to steer clear of flying close to the mountain. Standing 2,462 metres (8,000 feet) tall in a striking, near-perfect cone shape roughly 330 kilometres southeast of Manila, Mayon is one of three Philippine volcanoes that have shown heightened activity this year, though none has produced a major eruption so far. Also read: Beijing’s naval expansion: New images hint at 2027 launch for China’s fourth aircraft carrier Back in June 2023, authorities relocated more than 12,000 people from Mayon’s lower slopes to evacuation centres as a precaution against ash and toxic gas emissions from the crater. Seismic and volcanic activity are routine occurrences in the Philippines, a consequence of its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where shifting tectonic plates meet. The country’s deadliest eruption in modern history remains Mount Pinatubo’s 1991 blast, which claimed more than 800 lives and sent an ash cloud drifting thousands of kilometres across the region.

China's fourth aircraft carrier, widely believed to be its first nuclear-powered one, could be launched as early as next year as Beijing builds a fleet able to project naval and air power far beyond its shores, according to US researchers, the South China Morning Post reported. A 2027 launch would coincide with the centenary of the People's Liberation Army on August 1. Beijing has previously used major military anniversaries to showcase developments in its armed forces. In an updated assessment on Tuesday (Oct 27), the Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said satellite imagery from this month showed the vessel, commonly called the Type 004, at a construction stage similar to that of the Fujian, China's third carrier, in May 2021. The Fujian was launched about a year later, in June 2022. Analysts cautioned, however, that the Type 004's larger size, potentially more complex propulsion system and any unforeseen problems could alter its schedule.
