Former US President Barack Obama has broken his silence on the murder of Trump ally and right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Speaking at an event in Pennsylvania, Obama said that political violence should not have a place in a democratic country. He also criticised the White House for claiming that ‘radical left’ was responsible for Kirk's death. Stating that political violence is not new in the country, Obama highlighted that mourning its victims "doesn't mean we can't have a debate about the ideas" that were being promoted. He clarified that he does not agree with Kirk and his views, and he thinks his ideas "were wrong," but he stands with Kirk's family and called his murder a “tragedy.” Obama praised Utah Governor Spencer Cox for “abiding by a basic code” while disagreeing with his views. Obama specified that Kirk's stance on Black women, including Michelle Obama and Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and his belief in the "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory are something he has always opposed.
"There are no ifs, ands or buts about it, the central premise of our democratic system is that we have to be able to disagree and have sometimes really contentious debates without resorting to violence," Obama said. "There's been some confusion, I think, around this lately, and frankly, coming from the White House and some of the other positions of authority that suggest, even before we had determined who the perpetrator of this evil act was, that somehow we're going to identify an enemy. We're going to suggest that somehow the enemy was at fault, and we are then going to use that as a rationale for trying to silence discussion around who we are as a country and what direction we should go. And that's a mistake as well," Obama continued.
Charlie Kirk assassination case
Right-wing activist and United States President Donald Trump ally Charlie Kirk was shot at an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday (Sep 10). He later succumbed to injuries. His death has caused a stir in the political landscape of America, with thousands demanding justice. Both sides of the spectrum are pointing fingers at the increasing gun violence in the United States. However, some also criticised Kirk and his views on gun violence. Meanwhile, the US administration under President Donald Trump declared him a martyr and announced that US flags will be flown at half mast in his honour. A suspect named Tyler Robinson has been arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the murder case. Investigations have revealed several controversial things, including his alleged transgender partner, Lance Twiggs. Robinson, who is the prime suspect in the killing, is facing seven counts, including aggravated murder. Utah Governor Spencer Cox has confirmed that the authorities have pushed for the death penalty against him.
