The United States President Donald Trump has announced that he will reward golfer Tiger Woods with country's highest civilian honour.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is an award bestowed by the President of the United States.

In the United States, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal are the highest civilian awards.

Woods capped his remarkable comeback from injuries and personal problems with a victory at the Masters. He captured the green jacket by one stroke for his 15th major title -- but the first since 2008.

Woods had not won at Augusta National since 2005.

Trump himself is a lifelong golfer and owner of golf resorts, wrote on his Twitter handle, "Spoke to @TigerWoods to congratulate him on the great victory he had in yesterday’s @TheMasters."

"Because of his incredible Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE, I will be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM!" Trump said.

Trump is an especially close watcher of the game, being the owner of Trump-brand golf courses and something of a student of the game himself -- although there have been multiple reports, including from established golfers, that he cheats when competing.
