The Japanese government said on Thursday (Sept 19) thata 10-year-old boy enrolled at a Japanese school in China's Shenzhen died after he was stabbed by an assailant on Wednesday. Addressing a press conference, Japanese Foreign MinisterYoko Kamikawa said that the child died in the early hours of Thursday.
The victim was a student of theShenzhen Japanese School.
Citing Chinese authorities, a report by the news agency Reuters said that the boy was stabbed on his way to school at around 8 am local time on Wednesday. The authorities said that the assailant, aged 44, was arrested on the spot.
During Thursday's press conference, Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa said that he was taking this incident extremely seriously."This should never happen in any country. Particularly, I sincerely regret that this despicable act was committed against a child on his way to school," she said.
Japan has asked China to provide a detailed explanation of the facts and to take strong safety measures, she added.
Reuters reported that both Japanese and Chinese authorities declined to disclose the nationality of the victim. The website of theShenzhen Japanese School shows that the institute is for children of Japanese nationality.
The attack took place near the school on the anniversary of an incident in 1931 that triggered a war between China and Japan.It was the second such attack near a Japanese educational facility in China in recent months.
"China expresses its regret and sadness that this kind of unfortunate incident occurred," foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian saidon Thursday."We mourn the passing of the boy and express our condolences to his family," Lin said.
He addedthat the boy was a Japanese national whose parents are Japanese and Chinese citizens.
