The weather bureau also issued the highest “black” rainstorm warning and recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall on Hong Kong’s main island, Kowloon and the northeastern part of the city’s New Territories since Thursday night.&nbsp;

A report by Reuters citing&nbsp;a television news channel said that rescue&nbsp;workers took one person to hospital who was dead on arrival, while some 83 people were said to be injured.&nbsp;

The officials have also issued landslide risk warnings near the city’s mountainous terrain while streets turned into torrents and social media videos showed workers wading waist-deep in a station, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

The conditions were expected to last till at least Friday afternoon, said the weather bureau. They have also attributed this to the trough of low pressure associated with the remnant of Typhoon Haikui.&nbsp;

Hong Kong leader, John Lee said he was very concerned about the severe flooding in most parts of the city and has instructed all departments to respond with “all-out efforts”.&nbsp;

Travel and transport between Liantang Port and Wenjindu Port connecting Shenzhen and Hong Kong were also suspended&nbsp;due to flood damage, said the government.&nbsp;

All schools in Hong Kong have been suspended due to “extensive flooding,” said the officials, adding that employers have been asked to observe arrangements typically used for the strong wind signal 8, which brings the city to an effective standstill.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Macau’s weather bureau issued the lowest “yellow” rainstorm warning on Friday, with much of the gambling hub operating as usual.&nbsp;

Chinese state media, Xinhua, said that between 5:00 pm (local time) Thursday and 6:00 am (local time) Friday, the average rainfall in Shenzhen was 202.8 mm while the maximum cumulative rainfall reached 469 mm, breaking multiple meteorological records which began over seven decades ago.&nbsp;

Officials in Shenzhen have said, “that primary and secondary schools and kindergartens across the city will suspend classes on Friday to ensure&nbsp;the citizen’s safety and property,” reported Xinhua.&nbsp;

Shenzhen’s observatory also issued emergency warnings advising residents to stay indoors and warning downpours were abrupt and intense. According to media reports, daily rainfall in the city located in the Pearl River Delta linking Hong Kong to the Chinese mainland was expected to exceed 500 mm.&nbsp;

The water level in the Shenzhen reservoir also reached its limit on Friday, prompting authorities to begin discharging water and warning residents downstream to stay away from the rivers.&nbsp;

Additionally, schools in 10 districts across Guangzhou city, which is some 130 kilometres from Shenzhen, were suspended.

Typhoon Haikui, which was later downgraded to a tropical depression, made landfall in China’s Fujian province on Tuesday and caused nearly $700 million in economic losses before moving to Guangdong.&nbsp;

China’s Shenzhen eases restrictions as Covid outbreak threatens to derail economy

Apple supplier Foxconn has suspended its operations in tech hub Shenzhen city following lockdown as China experiences probably one of its worst Covid outbreak since the pandemic first broke out.

The decision to halt production is likely to hit Apple which recently announced a spate of products, including the iPhone, MacBook Air, etc.

"The operation of Foxconn in Shenzhen, China has been suspended from March 14 onwards in compliance with the local government's new COVID-19 policy," the Taiwanese company said in a statement.

The sporadic rise of Covid cases has caught the officials off-guard as many cities, including Shanghai and Beijing, are battling outbreaks liked to Omircon, which is currently raving neighbouring Hong Kong.

Mainland China reported 1,337 new domestically transmitted Covid cases with confirmed symptoms on March 13, the National Health Commission said on Monday.

Around 17 million residents in southern Shenzen city are under lockdown and have been told to stay at home.

The lockdown and a suspension of public transport are expected to last till March 20, a city government notice said, adding that it would launch three rounds of mass testing.

In Shanghai, several schools have been shut as 18 provinces battle clusters of the Omicron and Delta variants.

A disease expert in Beijing has noted that most infections in Hong Kong and the mainland are due to the Omicron BA.2 variant which is “spreading very fast this time”.

Zhang Wenhong pointed out that vaccination could not prevent breakthrough infections, but has brought the rate of severe illnesses and deaths lower than the flu.

“It is still not time for China to lie flat. We should have more clearer methods for the future rather than debating over zero-COVID or co-existence. If China reopens quickly at this time, new cases would surge in a short time. The domestic medical system would be overloaded and the society grind to a halt, causing irreparable damages,” Global Times quoted Zhang as saying.

"Let me clarify, this employee is a Hong Kong citizen, he's not a UK citizen, which is also saying he's a Chinese person," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said.

According to the Global Times, Cheng could be detained for up to 15 days and fined up to 5,000 yuan&nbsp;for the alleged crime.

In an editorial on Friday, the tabloid said it was at Cheng's request that police did not contact his family and that "thanks to the British foreign ministry and media, which have been hyping it, the case is now fully exposed."

Cheng was in the process of returning via high-speed train on August 8 and sent messages to his girlfriend as he was about to go through customs.

He has not been seen or heard from since.

The family said it had hired a lawyer in Shenzhen who had been unable to find or speak to the detained consulate employee.

Police in Shenzhen did not reply to AFP's request for comment.

Huawei, which is grappling with sanctions from Washington that threaten to cut its access to US technology and components, on Friday rolled out the Mate 20 X 5G phone for the China market with a price tag of 6199 yuan ($901).

Huawei also said at the launch event at its Shenzhen headquarters that it would unveil TV-like products called "Smart Screens" next month, which will be the first products based on its proprietary Hongmeng Operating System, according to Xinhua.

Huawei has given little information about Hongmeng, its own back-up operating system under development in case it was cut off from US-made software.

The company previously hinted that the operating system could replace Google's Android, though a senior executive earlier this month said Huawei intends to continue to use Android, and that Hongmeng is not an operating system for smartphones but connected devices.

Huawei's consumer business group CEO Richard Yu said Huawei's Smart Screens aims to be the central interface for entertainment and communication in the living room, according to a press release.

Huawei, which is grappling with sanctions from Washington that threaten to cut its access to US technology and components, on Friday rolled out the Mate 20 X 5G phone for the China market with a price tag of 6199 yuan ($901). Huawei also said at the launch event at its Shenzhen headquarters that it would unveil TV-like products called "Smart Screens" next month, which will be the first products based on its proprietary Hongmeng Operating System, according to Xinhua. Huawei has given little information about Hongmeng, its own back-up operating system under development in case it was cut off from US-made software. The company previously hinted that the operating system could replace Google's Android, though a senior executive earlier this month said Huawei intends to continue to use Android, and that Hongmeng is not an operating system for smartphones but connected devices. Huawei's consumer business group CEO Richard Yu said Huawei's Smart Screens aims to be the central interface for entertainment and communication in the living room, according to a press release.
