Dating trend boysober, or mansober, happened because of one basic human need

Dating can be hard and Gen Z seems to be realising it the hard way. The digital world has made dating extremely easy, with matches available at the tip of your fingertips. While it might appear charming at first, like a la la land of relationships, everything is not hunky-dory. Youngsters seem to have realised how exhausting it is to date, with the mental and emotional toll giving birth to the latest dating trend, Boysober.

Boysober involves staying away from dating for a year, mostly in your twenties. A female American comedian named Hope Woodard was the first to use the dating term. It went viral on TikTok among women who adopted the trend to reclaim their bodies and minds and now use the time for better things that give them peace. Hope says boysobering is a way to prevent toxic and meaningless relationships.

It is about “pausing, reflecting and reprioritizing, and not to gain male approval", Hope adds.

Mansober among older adults

Also known as "Mansober", the dating trend aims at avoiding things like mansplaining and gaslighting.

Being with the opposite sex is a desire that comes naturally to most youngsters. People look for a partner to share their joys and sorrows with. While we tend to mostly look at the love and romantic angle in any relationship, everything is not rosy when we are in one. Infidelity, microcheating, situationship, benching, and all sorts of things emerge from it like a Pandora's Box. Being in a relationship or not is a personal choice but staying sane and happy amidst all this is a choice we must make.

Is it the same as celibacy?

Celibacy is a more religious term and pertains to purity, so Hope doesn't want people to confuse boysober with the former. It is simply a way to be more at peace without stressing over another person. It is a more of a mental health and self-care exercise since dating sucks out a lot from a person. It is also not gender-specific and Hope says all youngsters can practice it. “It encourages all young single people to take a break from not only dating and the situationships resulting from it but also from exes, toxic relationships and hook-ups. A boysober year gives space to reflect, heal, and focus on what one wants next,” Woodard told The Independent.
