Chinese man suffers devastating consequences after killing a fly on his face

In a scary incident being reported from China, a man was forced to have his left eyeball removed after he killed a fly on his face. Apparently, swatting the fly on his face led to an infection. The doctors couldn't find a cure for his problem and no drugs were able to treat the infection. Since the infection could have proved fatal, the doctors had to remove his eye.
The man, identified by South China Morning Post by his surname Wu, killed the fly that had been bothering him after the insect sat on his face. An hour later, he started experiencing pain in his left eye which had become red and swollen. He sought medical advice and was diagnosed with seasonal conjunctivitis. But the pain did not subside and he started having problems seeing.
The doctors told him that current medicines could not treat him as the eye and the areas around it had become severely ulcerated. The infection was threatening to spread to his brain, and so the doctors had to remove his entire left eyeball.

According to reports, a drain fly was the culprit in Wu's case. This fly's larvae often live in water and it is commonly found in damp places in the house, such as bathrooms, bathtubs, sinks and kitchens. People in China are shocked by Wu's case. A Weibo user wrote, “This is terrifying. I often see these small insects in my bathroom and will no longer kill them randomly."
This is not the first time that a medical case involving a drain fly has been reported from China. In 2018, a fly landed on a wound on a 97-year-old woman's left cheek that caused a secondary infection. She was in pain for several days. Reportedly, the bathroom in the house had not been cleaned for a long time, attracting drain flies to the surface.

Experts say that the best way to keep these flies away is to ensure regular cleaning of bathrooms, sinks and other similar areas. These places should be dried up soon after use. Drains should be regularly unclogged and cleaned and all debris must be removed.
