<p>With the launch of every new model of the Apple iPhone, the price of the device also keeps going up. But despite rising prices, its popularity refuses to ebb. The craze is so high that an unopened first generation iPhone is set to rake in more than $50,000 at an auction, a whopping 80 times its original price.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Business Insider reported that Karen Green, the owner of the phone, had received the phone as a gift years back for a new job. But since it wasn't compatible with the existing network, she wrapped it and kept it away. She had three phone lines with Verizon, and iPhones at that time could only use AT&amp;T.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The cosmetic tattoo artist, in October, came to know of a first generation iPhone from 2007 that had sold for $39,339.60. She then contacted LCG Auctions, the auction house that handled the sale.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We got calls from everybody but 99 per cent of them didn’t have the same thing,” LCG Auctions founder, Mark Montero, told Business Insider. “But Karen had a really unique piece with a great story behind it.”</p>

<p>He added, “It was shocking because we had gotten so many duds.”</p>

<p>The auction house put a price estimate of “$50,000 and up” on the phone, the bidding for which started Thursday and will end on February 19.</p>

<p>In 2019, she saw an unopened, first generation iPhone being listed on eBay for $10,000. She immediately asked her son to bring the phone to check if it was in fact an unopened, first generation iPhone. She appeared on the daytime TV show "Doctor &amp; the Diva" with the phone where she learnt that the estimated value of her iPhone was set at $5000. She decided to hold selling it off.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But last year, she came across the auction where it was sold for nearly $40,000.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Green says since she needs the money for her business that she started some time back, she decided to sell it off this time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If I could hold off on the phone for like another 10 years, I probably would," Green told Business Insider. "The only reason why I am selling that phone is because I need to support this business," she added.</p>

<p>As the tech sector continues to bleed dry amid a drop in revenue and earnings, Intel on Tuesday announced it was cutting top management pay. The chipmaker said its CEO&nbsp;Pat Gelsinger was receiving a 25 per cent cut to his basic salary to preserve cash and initiate a recovery process.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“As we continue to navigate macroeconomic headwinds and work to reduce costs across the company, we’ve made several adjustments to our 2023 employee compensation and rewards programs,” read a statement released by the company.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from&nbsp;Gelsinger, his executive leadership team will see their salaries decrease by 15 per cent. Meanwhile, senior managers and mid-level managers will take a 10 per cent and 5 per cent cut to their pay respectively.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"These changes are designed to impact our executive population more significantly and will help support the investments and overall workforce needed to accelerate our transformation and achieve our long-term strategy," the chipmaker added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gaganyaan's Project Director, R&nbsp;Hutton, explained that Indian astronauts, who are originally test pilots of the Indian Air Force, would undergo a sustained acceleration of '4g' during the rocket flight, and during in an untoward event&nbsp;of an abort, they would face up to '12g' for a few seconds.</p>

<p>During an abort, the mini rockets fitted atop the rocket's nose would fire and carry the crew module (which houses the astronauts) to a safe altitude at least 3km away from the rocket. This is done in order to save the crew in case there is a mid-flight anomaly detected in the rocket that is carrying them. For context, fighter pilots ejecting from aircraft can experience '12-14g'.</p>

<p>Speaking at the Space Tech Summit at IIT Madras' Shaastra fest, Hutton outlined that the Gaganyaan crew's journey from launchpad to 400km orbit would take 16 minutes, whereas their return to Earth (de-boost to splashdown) would take 50 minutes. The crew module carrying the astronauts is being designed for a 48-hour mission, he added.</p>

<p>To a query from WION about the flight suits and how long they would be worn, Hutton replied that during the ascent, re-entry, and descent phase, the astronauts would be wearing Russian-origin flight suits. Once in orbit, all crew module conditions such as temperature, and pressure are found to be ideal and there is adequate confidence. The astronauts would be able to exit their flight suits and wear comfortable garments, he said.</p>

<p>Regarding the rescue and recovery of astronauts and crew module after the water landing, he said that the Indian Navy was the lead agency for the task and that the Maritime Force would task their ships and helicopters to the splashdown spot within an hour or two. Even if the landing were to take place away from the Indian waters, he said that the navy would be able to get the job done.</p>

<p>Considering that it would take a maximum of six hours for the ship to recover, the crew module is accordingly designed to retain power for the same duration to cater to lighting, life support, climate control, valve operation, displays, sensors, communication, etc.</p>

<p>Although the chatbot has turned out to be a great source of fun, the programme carries the capability to produce fake scientific abstracts that can easily mislead human reviewers.</p>

<p>The legitimate uses of ChatGPT in article preparation have created a scenario where the chatbot is being credited as a co-author on some papers.</p>

<p>ChatGPT's sudden arrival has led to a scramble among publishers to reply. Leading US journal Science's editor-in-chief Holden Thorp on Thursday announced the revised editorial policy in which the text created using ChatGPT was banned and it was clarified that the chatbot cannot be listed as an author.</p>

<p>“Given the frenzy that has built up around this, it’s a good idea to make it absolutely explicit that we will not permit ChatGPT to be an author or to have its text used in papers,” said Thorp. "Leading scientific journals require authors to sign a form declaring that they are accountable for their contribution to the work. Since ChatGPT cannot do this, it cannot be an author," Thorp added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He stated that even the use of ChatGPT in a paper's preparation is problematic. He added that a lot of errors are made by ChatGPT which can be present in the literature and if scientists will depend on AI chatbots for summarising their findings or preparing literature reviews, the work's proper context and the required deep scrutiny to reach a result can be lost.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from that, CCI also imposed a series of other measures that let users uninstall the Google-owned apps that come preinstalled on Android devices, such as Google Maps.</p>

<p>“We take our commitment to comply with local laws and regulations in India seriously,” Google said in the blog.</p>

<p>“The Competition Commission of India (CCI)’s recent directives for Android and Play require us to make significant changes for India, and today we’ve informed the CCI of how we will be complying with their directives.”</p>

<p>The move comes at a time when the Alphabet-owned company is facing global scrutiny over its stringent in-app payment policy.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, the US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Google accusing it of having a monopoly on the digital advertising market.</p>

<p>Google responded by stating the suit “ignores the enormous competition in the online advertising industry.”</p>

Google buckles under India’s anti-trust ruling, allows Android users to choose default search engine

The website gathers its data from a variety of sources, including user reports.</p>

<p>Users from many locations globally, including Cape Town in South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Sri Lanka, Peru&nbsp;and Ukraine, also took to the website to report similar outages. Users also posted similar reports on Twitter.</p>

Google policy overhaul: India's smartphone makers, Android users get better control

<p>In-house massage therapists made up more than two dozen of those who lost their jobs in Google's most recent wave of layoffs, which occurred last week.</p>

<p>27 in-house massage therapists were among the 1,845 employees that lost their positions with the company in the state of California, according to filings that CNBC reported on Tuesday. 24 of the massage therapists who lost their employment worked at the company's Mountain View, California, headquarters, while three additional massage therapists who worked at the company's campuses in Los Angeles and Irvine, California, also lost their jobs.</p>

<p>Many IT firms, including Google, have recently let go of thousands of workers.</p>

<p>Some of the workforce cutbacks are attributed to businesses hiring too many people during the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

<p>Reducing transit time is fundamental to human missions to the red planet. This is because a longer transit time means more supplies and more robust systems.</p>

<p>The current technology allows for the 225 million-kilometre average distance journey from Earth to Mars to be completed in about seven months. While the estimated time using a nuclear thermal rocket engine is not known, as per the NASA Administrator, it would allow astronauts to undertake the "journey to and from deep space faster than ever".</p>

<p>Before this, NASA had last tested a nuclear thermal rocket engine in the mid-19th century, some 50 years back.</p>

Apple MR headset, with pricey features, to release this spring: Report

<p>US automaker Ford plans to eliminate 3,200 jobs in Germany and expressed its&nbsp;concern for the future of the company's facilities in the continent's largest economy.&nbsp;The announcement coincided with concerns in the EU that companies would relocate their operations to the US as a result of the historic Inflation Reduction Act, which was recently approved and provides tax breaks for batteries and electric automobiles built in the US.</p>

<p>The majority of the job cuts, according to a spokeswoman for the IG Metall union, would occur in Cologne, where Ford has a sizable facility, however, all locations around Germany are under threat.</p>

<p>"We at IG Metall are extremely concerned about the future of the German development divisions and, as a whole, about the future of the German Ford sites," said a statement from the union after an extraordinary meeting with management.</p>

<p>If given the opportunity, Ford's German employees can continue to create popular electric vehicles for Europe, according to the union.</p>

<p>The Indian government-funded project, BharOS is an AOSP (Android Open Source Project) based operating system. Unlike Android, it does not have default Google apps or services, which implies that users will not be forced to opt for applications that they are unfamiliar with or do not trust.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Developed by the IIT-Madras incubated non-profit JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops) the free and open-source operating system (OS) will be used in government and public systems. This was in line with the project’s aim to reduce the reliance on foreign OS in smartphones and contribute significantly to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.&nbsp;</p>

The institute claims that it will give users more control, freedom, and flexibility to choose apps that cater to their needs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, the developers have said that it is better than both Android and iOS in terms of features and security as well as could offer better battery life for the device, reported the Indian Express. Similar to Android, the BharOS also offers “Native Over The Air” (NOTA) updates which means software updates will automatically get downloaded and installed on the device.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As mentioned earlier, privacy and security were among the main focus behind creating BharOS, in addition to NDA, the mobile operating system also gives its users access to trusted apps from company-specific Private App Store Services (PASS).&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement, the developers said, “A PASS provides access to a curated list of apps that have been thoroughly vetted and have met certain security and privacy standards of organisations. Twitter Blue subscription plans rolled out for Android, web users

<p>A team of scientists have created a way of what they describe as their attempt to guide lightning strikes with a first-of-a-kind car-sized Laser Lightning Rod. The findings of their study were published in the journal Nature Photonics which took place on top of the Säntis mountain at an altitude of about 8,200 feet in north-eastern Switzerland. Researchers were able to guide a lightning bolt for more than 50 metres with a powerful laser near a 124-metre-high telecom tower which is struck by lightning at least 100 times a year and is often referred to as one of Europe’s most affected by lightning structures.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lightning bolts are huge electrical discharges and a single one can reach up to a 30,000 degree Celsius temperature five times hotter than the surface of the sun. It is a complex phenomenon caused by an imbalance of positive and negative charges between storm clouds and the ground, however, some travel upward. Furthermore, while the chances of a person getting struck by lightning are rare, it has caused thousands of deaths and also tens of billions of dollars worth of damage to infrastructure every year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Therefore, the research has major implications as scientists are looking for newer ways to protect lives and infrastructure from the typical lightning rod, the idea of which was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century. “Metal rods are used almost everywhere to protect from lightning, but the area they can protect is limited to a few metres or tens of metres,” said Aurélien Houard, a physicist at Ecole Polytechnique’s Laboratory of Applied Optics in France and the lead author of the study, to the Guardian.&nbsp;</p>

Researchers were able to guide a lightning bolt for more than 50 metres with a powerful laser near a 124-metre-high telecom tower which is struck by lightning at least 100 times a year and is often referred to as one of Europe’s most affected by lightning structures. It is a complex phenomenon caused by an imbalance of positive and negative charges between storm clouds and the ground, however, some travel upward.
