Meta’s independent oversight board has reportedly decided to lift its strict rule that had banned photos of bare breasts to be posted on Instagram and Facebook, following a decade-long “free the nipple” campaign.&nbsp;

The oversight board, which is composed of academics, politicians and journalists, on January 17 advised the tech firm to change its adult nudity and sexual activity community standard “so that it is governed by clear criteria that respect international human rights standards”, reports the Guardian.&nbsp;

The recommendations of the board are said to be binding and it is expected that Meta will most likely follow them.&nbsp;

In its recommendation, the board said that “the [old] policy is based on a binary view of gender and a distinction between male and female bodies,” which makes rules about baring nipples “unclear” for those who do not identify as women. &nbsp;

It argued that the policy hindered inclusivity on the platforms, especially for women, intersex, non-binary and transgender people.&nbsp;

The move comes after the board overturned Meta’s decision to strike out two Instagram posts featuring transgender and non-binary people with bare chests.&nbsp;

Meta’s strict nudity policy has been the subject of an intense debate over its strict guidelines in cutting the exposure of women’s nipples. This rule had often come in the way of breastfeeding women who have had their content censured.&nbsp;

The movement, which began in 2000 in an attempt to de-sexualise the image of breasts, went mainstream in 2012 after Facebook took down clips from the actor/director Lina Esco’s documentary Free the Nipple.&nbsp;

The move was heavily criticised, with protests breaking out at Facebook headquarters at the time demanding the right for women to bare their breasts on social media if they choose to do so.&nbsp;

They have been contending that the platforms often allow hate speech to go uncensored, while female nipples are barred.&nbsp;

CEO Mark Zuckerburg tried to justify this in 2018 saying, "It's easier to build an AI system to detect a nipple than what is hate speech."&nbsp;

‘Free the nipple’: Meta to lift breast images ban rule in Facebook, Instagram 

A number of Chinese suppliers of Apple Inc. received initial clearance by Indian government to expand in the country, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The Chinese suppliers, however, will require to find local Indian joint venture partners as per manufacturing rules put in place by New Delhi. However, Ashok Elluswamy, the Director of Tesla's Autopilot Software, said in a deposition the video doesn't accurately portray what was seen.

The engineer detailed how the video was produced and said the car seen parking itself had crashed into the fence at the parking lot when the driver wasn't present.

The video was staged to promote Tesla's self-driving technology to demonstrate features that the system lacked, such as the ability to accelerate at a green light and stop at a red one, said the engineer.

Microsoft to expand access to its own version of ChatGPT tech

Google issued a warning over Android phones stating that smartphones will become more expensive in India because of the Competition Commission of India's (CCI) latest ruling. It is said that the costs might increase for app developers, equipment makers, and eventually consumers.&nbsp;

Google also mentioned that the new antitrust order to change how the company markets its Android platform might also pose security threats to users besides driving up costs. The magnitude of any change in costs will be more comprehensive as Google powers 97 per cent of smartphones in India.&nbsp;

This comes after CCI imposed a fine of $161 million on Google in October last year for exploiting its dominant position in Android. The company was also fined for abusing its power through Play Store.&nbsp;

It had also asked the tech giant to change restrictions imposed on smartphone makers related to pre-installing apps as the tech company licenses its Android system to smartphone makers.&nbsp;

Experts argued that Google's imposition of restrictions is anti-competitive, for example, mandatory pre-installation of its apps. On the other hand, the company say that such agreements help keep Android free.&nbsp;

The issue reached the Indian court when Google India approached the Supreme Court. It challenged the order passed by National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT).&nbsp;

As quoted by the news agency Reuters, Google's filing, which is not public, read: "Tremendous advancement in growth of an ecosystem of device manufacturers, app developers and users is at the verge of coming to a halt because of the remedial directions."&nbsp;

"Google will be required to make far-reaching changes to the Android mobile platform which has been in place for the last 14-15 years," it added.&nbsp;

During the court hearing on Monday (January 16), CCI's counsel Mukul Rohatgi alleged that Google is not willing to pay. But in the same case, it had paid a fine in the European court.&nbsp;

The CCI lawyers said, "Their (Google) grievance that they cannot pay the fine is false as they have in 2017 paid over 4 billion euros in an EU case. The EU court has also considered them as abusing dominant position. Here in India because it's a third-world country they are not paying."&nbsp;

Next, the court will hear the same matter on Wednesday.&nbsp;

In the latest change in the tech sector, both Facebook parent Meta and Microsoft are vacating their respective office buildings in Seattle and Bellevue in&nbsp;Washington, Seattle&nbsp;Times reported. Facebook on Friday confirmed that it plans to sublease both its offices, one at the six-story Arbor Block 333 in downtown Seattle, and the other at the 11-storey Block 6 of the Spring District in Bellevue.

US judge asks fired Twitter employees to drop crucial lawsuit

Biggest technological firms, Apple and Meta, which are known for giving the best perks and environment to their employees, failed to get a mention in the 100 Best Places to Work in 2023, listed by Glassdoor.&nbsp;This is the first time since 2009 that Apple failed to make its place in Glassdoor’s best places to work list besides Meta which was also consistently ranked in the list since 2011.

Both the companies, last year, were ranked in the middle, reported Bloomberg. The annual list released by Glassdoor is based on employees’ feedback about the company, at least 1,000 employees, that were submitted between October 19, 2021, to October 17, 2022.

Glassdoor’s lead economist Daniel Zhao, while speaking to Insider, said that this year’s ranking highlights common themes like communication, flexibility and transparency, and also indicates the perspectives of employees towards the economic outlook&nbsp;of the company.

"It's something that we get feedback on from employees because we know it's something that people care about and that's even more important at a time when the economy might be slowing down," said Zhao said.

"So I think this list is especially useful in that sense because we are considering how employees perceive their employers are doing,” he added.

"It becomes more important than ever for people to really understand the health of the company that they're going to, whether you're talking about financial health or cultural health," Zhao further stated. In the past year, Apple and Meta faced headwinds.

Meta rescinded job offers, stopped hiring and fired around 11,000 employees in 2022, the largest layoffs in the history of the company. Concerns were also expressed by the employees over the focus of Mark Zuckerberg on Metaverse, a world where AR and VR devices are used by people to connect in a digital universe.

Officially known as "discretionary time off", the policy replaces Microsoft's paid time off model with its new approach to allow employees to take time off as needed. A report in&nbsp;The Verge stated that the new policy authorising discretionary time off will be implemented starting January 16th.&nbsp;

Who will be allowed discretionary time off?

This new policy is available to only salaried Microsoft employees. Hourly workers at Microsoft won’t be offered the policy.&nbsp;

A discretionary paid time off will thus be granted to a salaried Microsoft employee for a noteworthy achievement. This also covers&nbsp;the professionals who are recognised within the organisation for contributions to Microsoft's mission, goals or objectives.&nbsp;

Why discretionary time off?

Microsoft said that how, when, and where its professionals do their jobs has changed dramatically. The move thereby is seen as saving Microsoft's administrative costs, in response to more flexible work schedules that came about in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

As universities move to figure out how to incorporate AI as a learning tool instead of it being used as a “cheating” one. A professor of artificial intelligence at the UNSW, Toby Walsh,&nbsp;during an interview with&nbsp;the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC) said that he actually was quite impressed by the AI-based software’s ability to write essays on any question one might have.&nbsp;

He added, “I think it will be as significant as the introduction of a calculator and how we teach mathematics…and perhaps we are going to look backwards in 10 years and see how we teach and what we teach and how we measure what we’ve taught is going to be different.”&nbsp;

A team of Chinese researchers have claimed a breakthrough to solve vulnerabilities of mainstream encryption mechanisms. They have claimed that their new, quantum code-breaking algorithm could reduce the scale of a practical quantum computer. The claim has been met with doubts from researchers in the United States.&nbsp;

The team, led by Professor Long Guilu of Tsinghua University, claimed in a yet-to-be-published paper that its new algorithm could reduce the scale of a practical quantum computer to 372 qubits, reported South China Morning Post.&nbsp;

"It might not be correct, but it's not obviously wrong. And there's the nagging question of why the Chinese government didn't classify this research," American cryptographer Bruce Schneier said in a blog post.

Scott Aaronson, director of the quantum information centre at the University of Texas at Austin, said a major problem with the Chinese research paper was its failure to clarify the advantage of quantum technology over classical computers.

"It seems to me that a miracle would be required for the approach here to yield any benefit at all, compared to just running the classical Schnorr's algorithm on your laptop," Aaronson wrote in a blog post.

Over a quarter of laid-off computer professionals, according to a recent ZipRecruiter survey, switched industries.

For those who want to stay in tech, the competition is heating up as candidates compete for a shrinking pool of positions.

In a ‘historic’ first, an AI-powered ‘robot lawyer’ will defend a human in US court

Swedish company Candela this week unveiled an 8.5-meter electric-powered hydrofoil speedboat that can cruise for over two hours at 20 knots, or about 37 kmph. California startup Navier tried to outdo its Scandinavian rival by bringing an electric hydrofoil that’s a little bit longer, though Candela is further along in getting its products to customers,&nbsp;Associated Press&nbsp;reported.

The rising fuel costs and environment-related concerns have boosted global entrepreneurial efforts to roll out electric-powered boats. The innovation has furthered up with sleek designs that lift the hull above the water’s surface at higher speeds.

Making water ways more accessible but big costs a concern

According to Navier CEO Sampriti Bhattacharyya, there is a huge untapped opportunity in boating. "Today, boats are looked at something like a wealthy person's toy. With technology, making the waterways more accessible will open up a huge new mode of transportation that we have never imagined before. If you are able to make small vessels move things and people on the water, suddenly the waterways are no more an obstacle and every marina can turn into a train station stop, essentially," she is quoted as saying by AM870 News.&nbsp;

The early electric boat models, however, are expensive, heavy and could instill more serious “range anxiety” than what drivers have felt about electric cars, according to&nbsp;Truist Securities analyst Michael Swartz.

"You’re not anywhere near the type of electric boat where you can go 50 miles offshore and go fishing for a couple of hours and come back,"&nbsp;Swartz is quoted as saying by Associated Press.

Earlier, Luxshare was producing only a small number of the iPhone 14 pro-Max at its Kunshan plant to make up for the lost production of Foxconn's Zhengzhou factory, the Financial Times reported.&nbsp;

Starting from March 01, all old iPhones before 2022 will see their battery replacements charge increased by $20.

These increased battery prices will also apply to not just iPhones but also MacBooks, some iPads and a few international markets.

Microsoft developing version of Bing powered by AI: Report

An Indian tribunal rejected a request from tech giants Google to overturn an earlier antitrust ruling that ordered the company to change its approach when it comes to the android market.

In October 2021, Google’s parent company – Alphabet Inc – was fined $161 million by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for misusing its dominant position in the Android app store. The ruling added that Google were putting extra pressure on smartphone makers related to pre-installing apps.

It was a huge setback for Google who considered the pre-installed apps market on the Android platform as a major source of profit. With the tribunal ruling against the company, Google will be forced to agree to the previous ruling and that can be a major blow to its reach and revenues.

"We are of opinion that at the moment given the voluminous nature of the appeal, there is no need to pass any interim order," the two-member tribunal panel said according to Reuters.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who was representing Google in front of the tribunal, argued that the decision was taken without all evidences and asked the tribunal to put the decision on hold till at least January 19. He added that the earlier decision can end up causing damage to consumers.

Google also said that the CCI "copy-pasted extensively from a European Commission decision, deploying evidence from Europe that was not examined in India" but the tribunal once again rejected the request.

The Korean Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) said that Tesla failed to tell its customers the actual driving range of the cars in cold temperatures on a single charge, their fuel effectiveness cost compared to gasoline cars and the performance of 'superchargers.'

The KFTC in its statement said that the driving range of EV cars in cold temperatures plunged&nbsp;by up to nearly 50.5 per cent in comparison to how they were advertised.&nbsp;
