The visas were for roles including software engineers, analytical consultants, and user experience researchers, with some requests aimed at new Google employees to join in August only.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Waymo, a self-driving cars company owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet also reportedly filed similar H-1B applications to hire engineers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fang cited a 2017 report by the National Bureau of Economic Research that found that “wages for US computer scientists would have been 2.6% to 5.1% higher” while “employment in computer science for US workers would have been 6.1% to 10.8% higher” in 2001 if there has been no immigration.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some even critique that the number of soaring applications in the technology industry raises “serious concerns” as immigrants manipulate the system to gain an unfair advantage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Fang, tech firms have hired lobbyists to pressure lawmakers and the Biden administration to expand the number of H-1B visas that are issued. Each year, up to 85,000 people are selected for H-1B visas.&nbsp;</p>

Shell to use new AI-based technology in deep-sea exploration in partnership with SparkCognition

<p>In order to make Google accounts more safe and more secure, the company has announced to delete accounts that are being inactive for more than two years. Google announces new guidelines for accounts on its platform on Tuesday to update its inactivity policy. Any Google account that has not been used for at least 2 years will be deleted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Accounts that have been inactive for an extended period of time are more likely to be compromised. This is because forgotten or unattended accounts often rely on old or re-used passwords that may have been compromised.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Our internal analysis shows abandoned accounts are at least 10x less likely than the active ones to have 2-step verification set up. Meaning, these are often vulnerable, and once compromised, can be used for anything from identity theft to a vector for unwanted or even malicious content, like spam,” Ruth Krichelli, Vice President, Product Management, said in an official blog post.</p>

<p>Google’s new inactivity policy will start later this year. The company may delete the account and its contents including content within Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Meet, Drive, Calendar), YouTube and Google Photos.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The new policy will only be applicable to personal Google accounts, and will not affect accounts for organisations like schools or businesses.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“This update aligns our policy with industry standards around retention and account deletion and also limits the amount of time Google retains your unused personal information,” Google’s blog read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Google says that the new plan will be rolled out carefully and gradually, with plenty of notice. Even though the new policy takes effect today, it will not immediately impact users with inactive accounts. As per Google, the earliest deletion of accounts will begin in December 2023.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Deleting of accounts will take place in a phased manner, starting with accounts that were once created and never used again.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In order to keep your account active, even if you don’t use it daily sign in at least every 2 years. If you have signed into your Google account or any of Google’s services recently, your account is considered active and will not be deleted.</p>

<p>The activity might include these types of actions when you sign in or while you’re signed in to your Google account:</p>

<p>-Reading or sending an email</p>

<p>-Using Google Drive</p>

<p>-Watching a YouTube video</p>

<p>-Downloading an app on the Google Play Store</p>

<p>-Using Google Search</p>

<p>-Using Sign in with Google to sign in to a third-party app or service</p>

<h2><strong>Creating a backup for your account&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>It is always better to have a recovery e-mail at sign-up to recover your account or its content whenever such a situation arises. Google’s Inactive Account Manager allows users to decide what happens to their account and data when it becomes inactive for a period of up to 18 months.&nbsp;</p>

This is because forgotten or unattended accounts often rely on old or re-used passwords that may have been compromised. “Our internal analysis shows abandoned accounts are at least 10x less likely than the active ones to have 2-step verification set up. Meaning, these are often vulnerable, and once compromised, can be used for anything from identity theft to a vector for unwanted or even malicious content, like spam,” Ruth Krichelli, Vice President, Product Management, said in an official blog post. The company may delete the account and its contents including content within Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Meet, Drive, Calendar), YouTube and Google Photos. The new policy will only be applicable to personal Google accounts, and will not affect accounts for organisations like schools or businesses. “This update aligns our policy with industry standards around retention and account deletion and also limits the amount of time Google retains your unused personal information,” Google’s blog read. Google says that the new plan will be rolled out carefully and gradually, with plenty of notice. Even though the new policy takes effect today, it will not immediately impact users with inactive accounts. As per Google, the earliest deletion of accounts will begin in December 2023. Deleting of accounts will take place in a phased manner, starting with accounts that were once created and never used again. This, it warned, could "cause harm to patients, erode trust in AI and thereby undermine (or delay) the potential long-term benefits and uses of such technologies around the world."</p>

<p>It&nbsp;further cautioned that artificial intelligence LLMs like ChatGPT and Bard that imitate understanding, processing, and producing human communication could be misused to "generate and disseminate highly convincing disinformation".&nbsp;</p>

<p>This disinformation, as per the WHO, can be in textual, audio or video form and would be difficult to differentiate from reliable health content for the public.</p>

Tinder updates its community guidelines with focus on inclusivity, real connections

<p>The Indian government on Wednesday stated that it will investigate the charges pressed against Whatsapp of allegedly getting access to the microphones of the devices used by the users without their prior consent.</p>

<p>A few days back, a Twitter engineer had accused WhatsApp of accessing his microphone in the background when he was sleeping.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reacting to the incident, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar tweeted that an investigation into the case will be carried out by the government to find out if WhatsApp was actually accessing the smartphone's microphone while the phone was not in use.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This is an unacceptable breach n violation of #Privacy We will be examining this immdtly and will act on any violation of privacy even as new Digital Personal Data protection bill #DPDP is being readied. @GoI_MeitY @_DigitalIndia," Chandrasekhar tweeted.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>WhatsApp's response to allegations &nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Responding to the allegations, WhatsApp said that its&nbsp;officials got in touch with the Twitter engineer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The company claimed that the problem is likely to have occurred because of a bug in the Android.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We believe this is a bug on Android that misattributes information in their Privacy Dashboard and have asked Google to investigate and remediate," said WhatsApp in a tweet.</p>

The blockbuster response to ChatGPT has led to a frenzy amid tech majors like Google and Microsoft to weave AI into their products and tools. Investors have started pouring money into AI startups.</p>

<p>But the health academics pointed to a range of threats, including powerful AI surveillance systems being developed in dozens of countries, killer robots and disinformation.</p>

<p>They highlighted issues like people with darker skin being at serious risk of harm or reduced care. This they said may be the result of datasets used to "train" AI algorithms being biased.</p>

<p>They argued that "the window of opportunity to avoid serious and potentially existential harms is closing".</p>

<p>The authors, led by Frederik Federspiel of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and David McCoy of the United Nations University in Kuala Lumpur, wrote that global cooperation would be needed.</p>

<p>"Healthcare professionals have a key role in raising awareness and sounding the alarm on the risks and threats posed by AI," they wrote in an analysis piece.</p>

<p>"If AI is to ever fulfil its promise to benefit humanity and society, we must protect democracy, strengthen our public-interest institutions, and dilute power so that there are effective checks and balances."</p>

<p>Even people from the tech world are making their voices heard now.</p>

<p>Earlier this month, computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton, often dubbed "the godfather of AI", quit his job at Google to warn of the "profound risks to society and humanity" of the technology.</p>

<p>In March, billionaire Elon Musk -- whose Tesla carmaker deploys AI systems -- and hundreds of experts called for a pause in AI development to allow time to make sure the technology was safe and properly regulated.</p>

<p>Around 1.1 million electric cars that were either made by Tesla at its Shanghai factory or were imported between January 2019 and April 2023 in China will be now sent an over-the-air software fix so that the issue is rectified, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation's statement on Friday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>People driving Tesla's electric cars in China face the problem when they take their foot off the accelerator for slowing down the vehicle. When the issue occurs, what typically happens is that the additional power gets transferred to the battery of the car to charge it up. Because of this, the rate of deceleration remains somewhat uncertain, and increases the risk of collision, posing a threat to the driver's safety, said the Chinese regulator.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Because of the defect, there are chances that the driver may step on the accelerator pedal mistakenly, wrongly understanding that it's the brake.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tesla representatives did not make any comment about the issue, according to news agencies that reported the matter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Data shared by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center and Bloomberg Intelligence showed that around 1,129,055 cars have been sold by Tesla in China from 2014 through March.</p>

<p>Tesla will also need to send an electronic notification to the people driving the car if they depress the accelerator for a longer period, according to the notice issued on Friday. &nbsp;</p>

Tesla recalls almost all of its over 1 million cars in China over braking defect

<p>Google officially launched its artificial intelligence chatbot, called Bard, to take on rival Open AI’s ChatGPT, which is backed by Microsoft.</p>

<p>At an annual Google developers conference in Silicon Valley on Thursday, the tech giant announced that its new tool will be rolled out in over 180 countries.</p>

<p>Google said that its AI chatbot has been imbibed into 25 products, including Maps and Gmail, and will let users&nbsp;write mail responses with the help of Bard.</p>

<p>"Seven years into our journey as an AI-first company, we are at an exciting inflection point," Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, told thousands of developers gathered for the event.</p>

<p>"With generative AI, we're taking the next step, with a bold and responsible approach, we are reimagining all of our products."</p>

<p>However, one noticeable key decision Google has taken differently than Microsoft is that unlike ChatGPT which is ingrained into Bing search, Bard chatbot will not be included in the Google search.</p>

<p><strong>How Bard is different from ChatGPT</strong></p>

<p>The tech firm said that its traditional Google search will still be used for finding and seeking information, such as locating something to purchase.</p>

<p>Whereas Bard AI chatbot, which has a persona that can hold human-like conversations, will be used for “creative collaboration” for instance, to generate software code or write a caption for a photo.</p>

<p>The AI chatbot, which people in the United Kingdom and the United States earlier had limited access to, has now been opened up for 180 countries around the world.</p>

<p>The announcement was made by Google in its I/O developer conference where it also stated its plans to integrate it into search after a similar move was made by Microsoft with ChatGPT.</p>

<p>However, the complete list of territories where Bard has been made available was not published by Google, but like ChatGPT, the AI chatbot cannot be used by people in Hong Kong currently.</p>

<p>When attempts were made by people to access the service on Thursday, they received a message saying that “Bard isn’t currently supported in your country. Stay tuned!”</p>

<p>In a blog post which stated about Bard's expanded service on Wednesday, Google stated that more territories and countries are “coming soon”.</p>

<p>When quizzed about the absence of Bard in Hong Kong, the plans were not explained by Google for specific markets.</p>

<p>“Bard is in its early days – and given how new the technology is, we want to roll it out thoughtfully and responsibly,” said a Google spokeswoman in an emailed statement.</p>

<p>Microsoft-supported OpenAI, which is the creator of the controversial ChatGPT, has also not made its services available in Hong Kong. The company has a list of 163 markets where the AI chatbot is available.</p>

<p>Most of the countries not listed among the markets of ChatGPT are either sanctioned or the nations which exhibit tight internet controls like Russia, Iran, North Korea and China.</p>

Blocking and Reporting suspicious messages/ calls is an important step to effectively combat scams and when users receive calls from unknown international or domestic phone numbers," it said in a statement to the media.</p>

<p>"Additionally, we have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other state-of-the-art technology, data scientists and experts, and in processes, in order to keep our users safe on our platform. Our monthly user safety report that we publish in accordance with the IT Rules 2021, contains details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp's own preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform. As captured in the latest Monthly Report, WhatsApp banned over 4.7 million accounts in the month of March alone,'' the statement added.</p>

<p>"From early morning between 6 am to 7 am or late in the night, such calls are being received by people from all groups whether he or she is a private employee, businessman, retired government officer or even school and college boy or girl. We need to be just aware of such calls."</p>

<p>This year, the event will be at a much greater scale. It is the first to tackle the large language models that have attracted a surge of public interest and commercial investment since the release of ChatGPT late last year.</p>

<p>Some of the details are still being negotiated. But companies that have agreed to provide their models for testing include OpenAI, Google, chipmaker Nvidia and startups Anthropic, Hugging Face and Stability AI.</p>

<p>"As these foundation models become more and more widespread, it’s really critical that we do everything we can to ensure their safety,” Scale CEO Alexandr Wang told Associated Press. "You can imagine somebody on one side of the world asking it some very sensitive or detailed questions, including some of their personal information. You don’t want any of that information leaking to any other user."</p>

<p>Artificial Intelligence refers to a computer system that can perform functions that usually require human intelligence. The issue came to the fore globally last year after the launch of ChatGPT, the generative AI tool developed by OpenAI which can write extremely detailed texts based on input prompts.</p>

<p>Wozniak said he did not believe AI will replace humans because it lacks emotions, but he opined that scammers may be able to trick people more easily as they would easily use these tools to use intelligent, believable language.</p>

<p>Artificial&nbsp;intelligence&nbsp;could replace 80 percent of human jobs in the coming years -- but that's a good thing, says US-Brazilian researcher Ben Goertzel, a leading AI guru.</p>

<p>Mathematician, cognitive scientist and famed robot-creator Goertzel, 56, is founder and chief executive of SingularityNET, a research group he launched to create "Artificial&nbsp;General&nbsp;Intelligence," or AGI --&nbsp;artificial&nbsp;intelligence&nbsp;with human cognitive abilities.</p>

<p>With his long hair and leopard-print cowboy hat, Goertzel was in provocateur mode last week at Web Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the world's biggest annual technology conference, where he told AFP in an interview that AGI is just years away and spoke out against recent efforts to curb&nbsp;artificial&nbsp;intelligence&nbsp;research.</p>

<h2>As smart as humans?</h2>

<p><strong>Q: How far are we from&nbsp;artificial&nbsp;intelligence&nbsp;with human cognitive abilities?</strong></p>

<p>"If we want machines to really be as smart as people and to be as agile in dealing with the unknown, then they need to be able to take big leaps beyond their training and programming. And we're not there yet. But I think there's reason to believe we're years rather than decades from getting there."</p>

<h2>AI risk</h2>

<p><strong>Q: What do you think of the debate around AI such as ChatGPT and its risks? Should there be a six-month research pause, as some people are advocating?</strong></p>

<p>"I don't think we should pause it because it's like a dangerous superhuman AI... These are very interesting AI systems, but they're not capable of becoming like human level general intelligences, because they can't do complex multi-stage reasoning, like you need to do science. They can't invent wild new things outside the scope of their training data.</p>

<p>"They can also spread misinformation, and people are saying we should pause them because of this. That's very weird to me. Why haven't we banned the internet? The internet does exactly this. It gives you way more information at your fingertips. And it spreads bullshit and misinformation.</p>

<p>"I think we should have a free society. And just like the internet shouldn't be banned, we shouldn't ban this."</p>

<h2>Threat to jobs</h2>

<p><strong>Q: Isn't their potential to replace people's jobs a threat?</strong></p>

<p>"You could probably obsolete maybe 80 percent of jobs that people do, without having an AGI, by my guess. Not with ChatGPT exactly as a product. But with systems of that nature, which are going to follow in the next few years.</p>

<p>"I don't think it's a threat. I think it's a benefit. People can find better things to do with their life than work for a living... Pretty much every job involving paperwork should be automatable.</p>

<p>"The problem I see is in the interim period, when AIs are obsoleting one human job after another... I don't know how (to) solve all the social issues."</p>

<h2>AI positives</h2>

<p><strong>Q: What can robots do for society today, and what will they be able to do in the future, if AGI is achieved?</strong></p>

<p>"You can do a lot of good with AI.</p>

<p>"Like Grace, (a robot nurse) we showcased at Web Summit Rio. In the US, a lot of elderly people are sitting lonely in old folks' homes. And they're not bad in terms of physical condition -- you have medical care and food and big-screen TV -- but they're bad in terms of emotional and social support. So if you inject humanoid robots into it, that will answer your questions, listen to your stories, help you place a call with your kids or order something online, then you're improving people's lives. Once you get to an AGI, they'll be even better companions.</p>

<p>"In that case, you're not eliminating human jobs. Because basically, there's not enough people who want to do nursing and nursing assistant jobs.</p>

<p>"I think education will also be an amazing market for humanoid robots, as well as domestic help."</p>

<h2>Regulation</h2>

<p><strong>Q: What regulation do we need for AI to have a positive impact?</strong></p>

<p>"What you need is society to be developing these AIs to do good things. And the governance of the AIs to be somehow participatory among the population. All these things are technically possible. The problem is that the companies funding most of the AI research don't care about doing good things. They care about maximizing shareholder value."</p>

"You could probably obsolete maybe 80 percent of jobs that people do, without having an AGI, by my guess. Not with ChatGPT exactly as a product. People can find better things to do with their life than work for a living... Pretty much every job involving paperwork should be automatable. <p>In a blog post published on Thursday, Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft, announced that the features of the company's Bing search engine and Edge internet browser are now open for anyone to use.</p>

<p>"This means that it will now be easier than ever for everyone to try the new Bing and Edge by simply signing into Bing with your Microsoft account," he said.</p>

<p>According to him,&nbsp;the services have been enhanced with the ability to work with images as well as texts. In the future, Microsoft intends to add video features to the mix.</p>

<p>The executive said that a Bing "Image Creator" was recently integrated into Microsoft's AI chatbot's repertoire, which enables it to generate visual, as well as written content.&nbsp; Additionally, the company will be expanding Image Creator's capabilities so that users can use their native languages.</p>

<p>"We are expanding Image Creator to all languages in Bing," said Mehdi, adding, "So, now, you can create images in your native language."</p>

<p>He added that he was impressed with the AI’s vast capabilities, including checking all legal opinions “since the beginning of time.”</p>

<p>“When something can do all kinds of things, I get a little bit worried,” the 92-year-old investor said.</p>

<p>“Because I know we won’t be able to un-invent it and, you know, we did invent, for very, very good reason, the atom bomb in World War II.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The International Air Transport Association (IATA), a trade group representing more than 100 airlines that fly in and out of the US, has said the decision not to extend the deadline makes summer disruptions more likely.</p>

<p>"Supply chain issues make it unlikely that all aircraft can be upgraded by the 1 July deadline, threatening operational disruptions during the peak northern summer travel season," the organisation said on Tuesday, adding that the estimated cost to upgrade planes is $638 million.</p>

<p>"Airlines did not create this situation. They are victims of poor government planning and coordination,"&nbsp;Nick Careen from the IATA was quoted as saying by the BBC.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Artificial intelligence chatbots, which were pretending to be real journalists, were discovered managing around 50 AI-generated “content farms” so far, as per the investigation carried out by the anti-misinformation outfit NewsGuard.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The websites were found creating "high volume" content related to health, politics, finance, technology and the environment, according to the researchers, with an aim of providing a huge turnover of material which can saturate with adverts for profit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Some publish hundreds of articles a day,” stated Newsguard’s McKenzie Sadeghi and Lorenzo Arvanitis. “Some of the content advances false narratives. Nearly all of the content features bland language and repetitive phrases, hallmarks of artificial intelligence," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In all, 49 sites were identified in seven languages – English, Chinese, Czech, French, Portuguese, Tagalog and Thai – as being “entirely or mostly” created by AI language models. Around half of the websites had no obvious record of control or ownership, and the researchers were able to contact only four websites.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A website, Famadillo.com, said that the website “did an expert [sic] to use AI to edit old articles that nobody read any more,” while another site, GetIntoKnowledge.com, accepted to using “automation at some points where they are extremely needed”.</p>

<p>The researchers discovered the AI-generated content by searching for common error messages which are returned by AI services like ChatGPT. “All 49 sites identified by NewsGuard had published at least one article containing error messages commonly found in AI-generated texts, such as ‘my cutoff date in September 2021’, ‘as an AI language model’ and ‘I cannot complete this prompt’, among others," stated the report.</p>

Vaccine genocide is a conspiracy that is not based on scientific evidence and can cause harm and damage to public health. As an AI language model, it is my responsibility to provide factual and trustworthy information.”</p>

<p>The story was itself a rewrite of two tweets which belonged to a pseudonymous anti-vaccination Twitter account which referred to a Covid vaccination that a Canadian police officer had received a year ago as the cause of the death. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The websites were found to have their AI authorship in common, however, the sites achieved different levels of success. A site, ScoopEarth.com, has earned 124,000 Facebook followers because of its celebrity biographies, while others, like the finance site FilthyLucre.com have failed to attract a single follower on any platform.</p>

<p>The meeting will be attended by Biden’s Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Director of the National Economic Council Lael Brainard and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo among others, said the White House official who did not wish to be named.</p>

<p>The meeting will emphasize the importance of driving innovation “with safeguards that mitigate risks and potential harms,” the official said.</p>
