<p>Twitter chief Elon Musk has "threatened" to reassign National Public Radio's Twitter account to another company, the U.S.-based broadcaster said on Tuesday.</p>

<p>Musk suggested that he would reassign the network's main account, under the @NPR handle, to another organization or person, NPR said.</p>

<p>NPR stopped posting content to its 52 official Twitter feeds last month in protest against a Twitter designation that implied government involvement in its editorial content.</p>

<p>Musk, in an email to an NPR reporter, asked about its engagement with Twitter, the public broadcaster said.</p>

<p>"So is NPR going to start posting on Twitter again, or should we reassign @NPR to another company?" NPR quoted Musk as saying.</p>

<p>"Our policy is to recycle handles that are definitively dormant," he said in another email. "Same policy applies to all accounts. No special treatment for NPR."</p>

<p>NPR and Twitter did not immediately respond to a request from Reuters for comment.</p>

<p>According to Twitter's policy, users should log in to their account at least once every 30 days to avoid permanent removal due to prolonged inactivity.</p>

<p>PBS and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation followed NPR and stopped posting on Twitter following similar labeling.</p>

<p>Twitter later dropped the labels but the outlets that were targeted have not resumed activity, their profiles showed on Tuesday.</p>

<p>The concept also has the support of&nbsp;Samsung,&nbsp;which sells the maximum number of Android smartphones worldwide,&nbsp;and the manufacturers&nbsp;of tracking products similar to the AirTag, such as Tile, Chipolo, and Pebblebee.</p>

<p>Since its release in 2021, the $30 AirTag has tremendously grown in popularity. However, police have received reports of stalkers using the gadgets to follow people who have previously been romantically involved with them and other people who are unaware they are being followed.</p>

<p>“Bluetooth trackers have created tremendous user benefits, but they also bring the potential of unwanted tracking, which requires industrywide action to solve,” said Dave Burke, Google’s vice-president of engineering for Android who spoke to the Guardian.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apple, too, has taken cognisance of the issue and the possibility&nbsp;of the devices being misused. The company has responded by launching&nbsp;various features, including notifications that warn iPhone owners if a location tag that is not associated with their devices is travelling with them and an app to detect unwanted AirTag tracking for Android devices.</p>

<p>But Apple and Google now want to go a step ahead&nbsp;with a new industry standard that they say will help curb&nbsp;surveillance.</p>

<p>The two companies&nbsp;would release the solution&nbsp;via software upgrades for iPhones and Android phones, which would be distributed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), an agency that develops internet standards.</p>

<p>Erica Olsen, senior director of the Safety Net Project at the National Network to End Domestic Violence, praised the initiative to establish an industry standard because she thinks it will help shield victims of abusive relationships and other people&nbsp;who have been the target of stealth technology.</p>

<p>“These new standards will minimize opportunities for abuse of this technology and decrease the burden on survivors in detecting unwanted trackers,” Olsen said.</p>

<p>The&nbsp;<a data-link-name="in body link" href="https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-detecting-unwanted-location-trackers/">draft</a>&nbsp;is open to comments and recommendations&nbsp;from interested parties for the next three months.</p>

This comes after Hinton had been working part-time at the tech giant between its headquarters in Silicon Valley and Toronto, Canada.&nbsp;He said that "right now, they're not more intelligent than us, as far as I can tell. <p>In an interview with the New York Times, Hinton, who along with two of his graduate students at the University of Toronto created technology that became the intellectual foundation for AI systems, has now officially joined a growing number of critics warning about the risks of AI. He also admitted that a part of him now regrets his life’s work.</p>

<p>“I console myself with the normal excuse: If I hadn’t done it, somebody else would have,” Hinton told the New York Times. He also spoke about how he thought he had more time to talk about the potential threat of AI and said it is coming sooner than expected. “I thought it was 30 to 50 years or even longer away,” adding, “Obviously, I no longer think that.”</p>

<p>After the interview, he also took to Twitter to clarify that he left Google so he could speak freely about the risks of AI, as opposed to because he wanted to criticise the tech giant specifically.</p>

<p>“I left so that I could talk about the dangers of AI without considering how this impacts Google. Google has acted very responsibly,” said Hinton.&nbsp;</p>

In a statement provided to CNN, Google’s chief scientist Jeff Dean said, “We remain committed to a responsible approach to AI. We’re continually learning to understand emerging risks while also innovating boldly.”</p>

<p>It was not limited to them, as people across the spectrum, and a growing number of lawmakers, advocacy groups and even tech insiders have been sounding alarms over AI-powered chatbots spreading misinformation and potentially displacing jobs.<br />

<p>The origins of journalism as a practice and profession can be traced back centuries, from news sheets in ancient Rome to now various digital means and mediums of not only reading the news but also writing it. Journalism has seen significant changes over the years, so what’s next? With Artificial Intelligence (AI) slowly and increasingly becoming a part of daily lives, it also threatens millions of jobs across the world, will journalists be next to go? The answer is: not anytime soon. Here’s why.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Is the use of AI in journalism new?</strong></p>

<p>The advent of AI in journalism began earlier than one might think. The news agency the Associated Press (AP) has been using AI to produce corporate earnings stories since 2014 and has also reportedly used the technology for sports recaps. In 2018, China’s Xinhua news agency created the world’s first AI-powered male news anchor and earlier this year debuted its first AI female news anchor.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>To what extent is AI being used in journalism now?</strong></p>

<p>While these AI-based tools have been around for quite a few years, the cause of concern has seemingly increased recently with the extent to which it is being used. However, most of the journalists who used ChatGPT when it was launched, to write their columns, concluded that the bot was not good enough to take over their jobs yet, reported AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, in late 2022, American technology news website CNET took things to the next level when it quietly published dozens of feature articles written entirely by an AI programme. It was not until January this year that the speculations were confirmed by the company, which had called it a mere experiment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This came after the media outlet began receiving lengthy correction notices for some of these AI-generated stories. While the Associated Press also did use AI for their stories, it is the extent to which it used machine-generated content, as their system is said to be more simplistic. The AP would essentially insert new information into pre-formatted stories as opposed to CNET which created entire feature-length articles.</p>

<p>However, it did not stop there. This year also witnessed the launch of the world’s first news channel whose content is generated entirely by AI called NewsGPT. The platform aims to revolutionise the way that news is delivered by providing unbiased, fact-based news without any hidden agenda, while its CEO, Alan Levy, called it a game changer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to reports, NewsGPT is powered by machine learning algorithms and natural language processing technology which scans relevant news sources across the world in real-time to create stories which are supposedly accurate, up-to-date, and unbiased. It also claims to be free from the influence of advertisers, political affiliations, or personal opinions.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Use of AI in journalism sparks concerns</strong></p>

<p>As the media ecosystem&nbsp;is going through major changes, it has sparked concerns about how and to what extent AI can be used for journalism, and rightly so. The several cases encountered so far and the gloomy outlook of the future on the subject, disinformation seems to be a running theme.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The “news broadcasters” of the supposed news channel were AI-generated. “This is the first time we’ve seen a state-aligned operation use AI-generated video footage of a fictitious person to create deceptive political content,” the Vice President of Intelligence at Graphika, Jack Stubbs, told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similar concerns about the ethics of using AI in newsrooms were raised when Kuwait-based media outlet, Kuwait News, introduced their first AI-powered virtual news presenter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/virtual-news-presenter-generated-using-artificial-intelligence-for-kuwaiti-media-outlet-581243">‘Fedha’</a>. Notably, Kuwait ranked 158 out of 180 countries in the Reporters Without Borders 2022 World Press Freedom Index.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as media professionals have raised concerns about the growing dependence on algorithms and automation, threatening and even undermining the credibility of journalism.&nbsp;<br />

Not to mention, Google chatbot Bard’s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/googles-shared-dip-after-ai-chatbot-bard-flubs-answer-in-new-ad-heres-what-happened-560132">latest mishaps</a> that cost the tech giant billions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Misinformation, unlike disinformation, may or may not be deliberate. But given accuracy is one of the fundamental elements of journalism, AI getting its basic factual data incorrect on multiple occasions can threaten the trustworthiness of journalism, in the long term. &nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Not all doom and gloom</strong></p>

<p>While AI might have its flaws, some media workers have also hailed bots like ChatGPT as a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/ai-bots-can-replace-journalists-claims-german-publisher-axel-springer-567118">“revolution”</a> for the industry. “Artificial intelligence has the potential to make independent journalism better than it ever was – or simply replace it,” said publishing behemoth Axel Springer’s boss Mathias Doepfner to his staff, as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He announced a restructuring which would see “significant reductions” in production and proofreading of content as both companies have pushed AI as a tool to support journalists. Notably, the practice of media organisations using automation for routine or repetitive work is not new.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“AI is not stealing your job…Let that sink in,” wrote the now former manager of the JournalismAI initiative at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Mattia Peretti wrote in an analysis for Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN).&nbsp;</p>

But would journalism be one of them? Not yet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>AI can play <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/can-chatgpt-replace-journalists-in-breaking-stories-575750">various roles</a> to support a journalist’s work, but it will be long before it is changing newsroom roles, wrote Peretti, adding that by itself AI does not have the ambition nor the ability to steal jobs anytime soon.&nbsp;</p>

According to reports, NewsGPT is powered by machine learning algorithms and natural language processing technology which scans relevant news sources across the world in real-time to create stories which are supposedly accurate, up-to-date, and unbiased. <p>Popular artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, which was banned in Italy over data privacy concerns last month, has now been made available to users again after the company 'addressed, clarified' issues raised by Italy’s data protection authority and complied with the demands of regulators.</p>

<p>"ChatGPT is available again for our users in Italy. We are delighted to welcome them back and remain committed to protecting their personal data," an OpenAI spokesperson said.</p>

<p>OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also tweeted&nbsp;that he is excited about ChatGPT services resuming in Italy.</p>

<p>Italy's data protection agency, Garante, had laid out a list of demands, and guidelines which it said ChatGPT maker OpenAI must meet by the end of April if it wanted its services to resume in the country.</p>

<p>"Only in this case...the authority will suspend the provisional restrictions on the use of the data of Italian users...and ChatGPT will once again become accessible in Italy," it said.</p>

<p>OpenAI welcomed the agency's move and in a statement to Reuters said, "We are happy that the Italian Garante is reconsidering their decision and we look forward to working with them to make ChatGPT available to our customers in Italy again soon."</p>

<p>The company has now said that it will offer a tool to verify users' ages in Italy upon sign-up and will also provide greater visibility of its privacy policy and user content opt-out form.</p>

<p>According to a company spokesperson, OpenAI will now also provide a new form for the European Union users to exercise their right to object to the use of their personal data to train the chatbot.</p>

ChatGPT services resume in Italy after OpenAI complies with regulators’ demands

<p>ChatGPT, a very popularised chatbot created by OpenAI, was used by a professor at the University of Victoria in Canada to write a reference letter which a student needed to get a scholarship. The decision paid off well as the student was able to get the scholarship, reported The Atlantic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Matt Huculak, who is the head of advanced research services at the libraries of the university, directed ChatGPT to pen down an "excellent" reference letter for a student who was then selected for a graduate programme at one of the "top-three" schools in Canada.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The student was not just selected but also offered a prestigious scholarship by the University of Cambridge soon later, Hucula said.</p>

<p>"Honestly, the ChatGPT generated letter was among some of the best letters I've read. It was concise, it used "concrete" examples, it spoke to the candidate's ability to collaborate with others," Huculak stated. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Huculak said that the final outcome left him pleasantly surprised. "What I wrote ended up feeling like the most 'human' and heartfelt letter I've written in a long time," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Huculak stated that he used ChatGPT to write an original letter. He said that the professors generally recycle the reference letters they gave in the past and format them to suit the needs of a particular student, which can produce dull letters.</p>

<p>"A formula, per se, isn't bad," said Huculak. <p>An Instagram account by the name metav3rse has posted series of videos that shows people share their experiences of how they got a call from their 'loved ones' saying that they were in trouble. The post suggests that voices of family members of these people were cloned using AI and that they sounded "100 per cent" like how they would speak or even cry, in real life.</p>

<p>In the video series, a TikTok user with a handle @babybushwhacked told her story of how her grandpa had a call saying that her little brother was in a car crash. The woman and her grandpa immediately thought that his life was in danger or he was arrested for causing an accident and was in need for money. The call got cut abruptly before the boy's grandpa could get the complete picture of things. The boy's sister scoured the streets for hours.</p>

<p>In the second video, a man tells his story how the scammers cloned his voice and called his folks to say that he was in a bad car accident. The man says he does not own a car and hasn't driven for months. The scammers, using the man's voice, asked his family members for money.</p>

<p>Scared witless, his family prepared to put together the amount when his father decided to call him and verify if it was really him who called earlier. Things were soon clear and money wasn't paid to the scammers.</p>

The post suggests that voices of family members of these people were cloned using AI and that they sounded "100 per cent" like how they would speak or even cry, in real life. In the video series, a TikTok user with a handle @babybushwhacked told her story of how her grandpa had a call saying that her little brother was in a car crash. The woman and her grandpa immediately thought that his life was in danger or he was arrested for causing an accident and was in need for money. The call got cut abruptly before the boy's grandpa could get the complete picture of things. The boy's sister scoured the streets for hours. In the second video, a man tells his story how the scammers cloned his voice and called his folks to say that he was in a bad car accident. The man says he does not own a car and hasn't driven for months. The scammers, using the man's voice, asked his family members for money. Scared witless, his family prepared to put together the amount when his father decided to call him and verify if it was really him who called earlier. Things were soon clear and money wasn't paid to the scammers. <p>While pointing out Lemon8's success in Japan, Glenn Gerstell said that if the app gets shut out of the US market, "they have still got (millions of) people around the world who could be users of this app."</p>

<p>Both Gerstell and Lindsay Gorman said that Lemon8 could also serve as an alternative for content creators if TikTok was banned in the US.&nbsp;</p>

Russia enters AI race with ChatGPT contender called GigaChat

<p>The European Union on Tuesday announced stricter content rules for 19 online platforms, including Instagram, TikTok and Twitter. The new rules apply to platforms that have a massive number of followers. The list also features services from Amazon, Google, Meta, Instagram and Microsoft, all of which have more than 45 million active users.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since the number of followers on these platforms is huge, they will now fall under a category known as the Digital Services Act (DSA). &nbsp;The new law imposed measures such as annual audits and a duty to effectively counter disinformation and hate content from August.</p>

<p>In four months' time, "these platforms and search engines will not be able to act as if they were 'too big to care'," Thierry Breton, the EU's internal market commissioner, said in a statement.</p>

<p>"This new supervision system will cast a wide and tight net and catch all points of failure in a platform's compliance," he added.</p>

<p>Platforms that meet the 45-million-plus threshold include Elon Musk-owned Twitter, Alphabet's Google Search, Google Maps, Google Shopping and Google Play units as well as its YouTube subsidiary; and Meta's Facebook and Instagram.</p>

<p>Others on the list are Microsoft's LinkedIn, Apple's iOS App Store, Wikipedia, messaging app Snapchat and creative image website Pinterest.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tuesday's announcement follows a February deadline for online companies to publish user figures in Europe.</p>

<p>Under the DSA, they will be categorised as a "Very Large Online Platform" (VLOP) or a "Very Large Online Search Engine" (VLOSE).</p>

<p>Most of the companies on the list are US-based. However, there is also Chinese-owned platforms TikTok and the e-commerce site AliExpress also feature. German online fashion retailer Zalando has also been named.</p>

<p>Talking about the new rules, Breton said Tuesday that "stress tests" will be undertaken by his team to check Twitter's compliance readiness "at the end of June".</p>

<p>He added that TikTok had also expressed an interest in cooperating to ensure compliance.</p>

<p>The DSA aims to force platforms to better protect children, strengthen transparency around digital services, prohibit the sale online of unsafe goods and allow users to have greater choice when online in the EU.</p>

<p>Fines of up to six per cent of the platforms' annual global sales for repeated infringements can also be imposed under the rule.</p>

<p>By August 25, 2023, all 19 platforms need to have an independent compliance system in place. They will have to give their first annual risk assessment to the European Commission and tell how they plan to handle content on mental health and gender-based violence.</p>

<p>There will then be an independent audit and oversight by the commission.</p>

<p>Commission vice president Margrethe Vestager said the designations will lead to &nbsp;"meaningful transparency and accountability of platforms and search engines and give consumers more control".</p>

<p>Online platforms declaring themselves below the 45-million user threshold include Swedish music-streaming site Spotify, US dating app Tinder and home-rental platform Airbnb.</p>

<p>"Four to five" more platforms could be added to the list "in the coming weeks," Breton said.</p>

<p>The DSA is one of two major laws the EU passed last year to rein in digital platforms to protect EU users. The second law is the Digital Markets Act which prohibits anti-competitive behaviour by so-called "gatekeepers" of the internet.</p>

<p>In a bid to determine how well OpenAI's technology will do on accounting examinations, researchers from Brigham Young University (BYU), US, and 186 other universities conducted this study. Their research was published in the journal Issues in Accounting Education.</p>

<p>The average student score on the accounting exam used by the researchers was 76.7 per cent, while ChatGPT received a score of 47.3 per cent.</p>

<p>While ChatGPT was shown to outperform students on 11.3 per cent&nbsp;of the questions, doing particularly well on accounting information systems (AIS) and auditing, it was discovered that the AI bot performed worse on tax, financial, and managerial tests. &nbsp;The reason for this, according to researchers, may be that ChatGPT had difficulties with the mathematical operations necessary.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Further research revealed that the AI bot, which use machine learning to produce natural language writing, performed better on true/false and multiple-choice questions (69.5&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;right), but less well on short-answer questions (between 28.7&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;and 39.1&nbsp;per cent).</p>

'Innocent' minds may come across or use it in the form of mimicry, mockery, or other fun apps to play with. But, the same algorithm is used for non-consensual deepfake pornography, revenge porn, and child porn.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Deepfake pornography</strong></h2>

<p>Experts had raised concerns when porn created using the technology first started to spread across the internet several years ago. It began when a Reddit user shared clips that placed the faces of female celebrities on the shoulders of porn actors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similar images, as well as videos, have since been circulated by deepfake creators, mostly aimed at online influencers, journalists, and others with a public profile. Thousands of videos can be found on a variety of websites. And some apps have allowed users to create their own images, essentially allowing anyone to turn anyone into sexual fantasies without their consent, or to use the technology to harm former partners.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If we analyse the problem over which the concerns have been raised by experts, the main issue is the ease and simplicity available at one's fingertips to make sophisticated and visually compelling deepfakes. Experts also believe that the development of generative AI tools, will exacerbate the existing issue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by The Associated Press, Adam Dodge, the founder of EndTAB, a group that creates awareness on technology-enabled abuse, said: "The reality is that the technology will continue to proliferate, develop and become sort of as easy as pushing the button. And as long as that happens, people will undoubtedly... continue to misuse that technology to harm others, primarily through online sexual violence, deepfake pornography and fake nude images."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>How to stop it?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Amid growing concerns, some AI models claim to be restricting access to explicit images. OpenAI, the company behind the wildly popular ChatGPT, said it removed explicit content from data used to train the image-generating tool DALL-E, which limits the ability of users to create those types of images. OpenAI says it also filters requests and says it blocks users from creating AI images of celebrities and prominent politicians.</p>

<p>Midjourney, which is another AI model, blocks the use of certain keywords. It also promotes users to flag problematic images to moderators.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When reports emerged that some users made celebrity-inspired nude pictures using the image generator Stable Diffusion, developed by the startup Stability AI, the company issued an update in November that removed the ability to create explicit images using the technology.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Social media companies such as TikTok have come up with new guidelines to better protect the platforms. Other companies, where the use of deepfake is prominent, have introduced new rules against harmful materials and content.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meta, and also some adult sites such as OnlyFans and Pornhub, began participating in Take It Down, an online tool that allows teens to report explicit images and videos of themselves on the internet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by AP, Gavin Portnoy, a spokesperson for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children which operates the Take It Down tool, said: "When people ask our senior leadership what are the boulders coming down the hill that we're worried about? <p>Following the news of this letter, Musk registered a firm named X.AI Corp, incorporated in Nevada, as per a state filing. The firm listed Musk as the sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk's family office, as secretary.</p>

<p>Previously too, Musk has warned about the dangers of AI. In March, he said, "AI stresses me out."</p>

<p>He co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but stepped down from the company's board three years later. In 2019, Musk tweeted he left OpenAI because he had to focus on Tesla and SpaceX.</p>

<p>Apple Inc and Alphabet Inc have raised concerns with Amazon.com Inc after learning that sexually explicit photographs could be accessed by children on the popular Kindle app and called on Amazon to strengthen its content moderation.</p>

<p>The warnings were sparked by questions posed by Reuters to spokespeople at the three companies about users’ ability, via the Kindle app, to access and view online volumes of photographs of naked women, with titles such as “75 hot fully nude photos of a young blonde” and “Real Erotica: Amateur Naked Girls – Vol. 4". Some appeared to show women and men engaging in sexual acts.</p>

<p>The companies said their concerns were around policy violations but did not provide more details of how their rules were broken or about their warnings to Amazon.</p>

<p>Reuters learned of the issue when two families told Reuters their pre-teen sons downloaded the explicit material via Amazon's Kindle Unlimited e-book subscription service and viewed the full-colour photographs on the Kindle iPhone app.&nbsp;Pornography also is available through Amazon's Kindle online store and viewable on versions of the Kindle app.</p>

<p>The parents, who declined to be named, told Reuters they were initially attracted to the $10-per-month service because it offered access to age-appropriate book series that would otherwise be expensive to purchase and were not available on Amazon's Kids+ subscription service.</p>

<p>“We’re committed to providing a safe shopping and reading experience for our customers and their families and we take matters like this seriously," said Amazon in a statement to Reuters. "We are reviewing all of the available information and are taking action based on our findings.”</p>

<p>Referring to Amazon, Apple said, “We’ve shared these concerns with the developer and are working with them to ensure their app is compliant with our guidelines.” Google in a statement said that "Google Play does not allow apps that contain or promote sexual content and we've been in contact with the developer on this issue."</p>

<p>Such exchanges are rare among tech companies which, while competitive, also rely on one another for a variety of services. The Kindle and Amazon apps are consistently among the most downloaded on Google's and Apple's app stores.</p>

<p>The adult material at issue is primarily self-published through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing arm. Authors can self-publish their books nearly instantaneously through Amazon and may designate the content as available for the Kindle Unlimited service. In Amazon’s terms for its self-publishing arm, it says it can refuse to sell content it deems “offensive or inappropriate,” which may include content that “contains&nbsp;pornography.”</p>

<p>Amazon is the world's leading e-book distributor, controlling two-thirds or more of the market, according to some estimates. E-books can be viewed on black-and-white Kindle devices but also in full color on the Kindle mobile app.</p>

<p>Three internet law experts interviewed by Reuters said that Amazon was unlikely to face legal ramifications, given&nbsp;First&nbsp;Amendment&nbsp;protections.</p>

<p>Eric Goldman, a Santa Clara University law professor, said there's a body of law that broadly protects&nbsp;distributors of&nbsp;pornography and other potentially objectionable materials even if it might end up in the hands of minors, comments that were echoed by the other two experts.</p>

<p><strong>AGE RATINGS AND PARENTAL CONTROLS</strong></p>

<p>After Reuters alerted Apple of the availability of&nbsp;pornography in the Kindle app, Amazon earlier this month changed the age rating in the app store to 12 years or older from 4 years or older. The app is rated "teen" on Alphabet's Google Play store.</p>

<p>The companies can, at their discretion, remove an app from their app store for rules violations or other reasons. And Apple and Alphabet have in the past policed their app stores for disallowed adult material, including removing apps that displayed explicit content or ads.</p>

<p>There are no parental controls available for the Kindle Unlimited service.</p>

<p>The Apple app store’s guidelines “prohibit apps dedicated to portraying overtly sexual or&nbsp;pornographic material,” the company said in a statement. “App developers are responsible for moderating the user-generated content on their platforms, and we work with developers to take immediate corrective actions whenever we find any issues.”</p>

<p>Amazon said it was also updating the Kindle app, without offering specifics, and noted that its terms require parental involvement for users under 18.</p>

<p><strong>DINOSAUR AND ALIEN EROTICA</strong></p>

<p>Kindle Unlimited, for $10 per month, offers users a mix of self-published e-books and more traditional fare from publishing houses. Porn on Amazon's Kindle app prompts warnings from Apple, Alphabet

<p>Canada's public broadcaster CBC and its French-language version Radio-Canada said on Monday that they were quitting Twitter over a new government-funded label, that it deems to be questioning&nbsp;its editorial independence. The Canadian public broadcaster's Twitter exit comes days after the US radio NPR quit the platform over a similar label.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Radio-Canada said Twitter had added a "government-funded media" label to its account. This, the Canadian state broadcaster added, branded it similar to the major media outlets in countries such as Russia and China.</p>

<p>"In the case of CBC/Radio-Canada this labeling is untrue and deceptive," the statement said.</p>

<p>While the broadcaster is publicly funded, it said its editorial independence is protected under Canadian broadcasting law.</p>

<p>"Twitter can be a powerful tool for our journalists to communicate with Canadians, but it undermines the accuracy and professionalism of the work they do to allow our independence to be falsely described in this way," it said.</p>

<p>"Consequently, we will be pausing our activity on our corporate Twitter account and all CBC and Radio-Canada news-related accounts."</p>

<p>The broadcaster instead urged Canadians to follow it on other social media.</p>

Canada's public broadcaster CBC and its French-language version Radio-Canada said on Monday that they were quitting Twitter over a new government-funded label, that it deems to be questioning its editorial independence. The Canadian public broadcaster's Twitter exit comes days after the US radio NPR quit the platform over a similar label. In a statement, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Radio-Canada said Twitter had added a "government-funded media" label to its account. This, the Canadian state broadcaster added, branded it similar to the major media outlets in countries such as Russia and China. "In the case of CBC/Radio-Canada this labeling is untrue and deceptive," the statement said. While the broadcaster is publicly funded, it said its editorial independence is protected under Canadian broadcasting law. "Twitter can be a powerful tool for our journalists to communicate with Canadians, but it undermines the accuracy and professionalism of the work they do to allow our independence to be falsely described in this way," it said. "Consequently, we will be pausing our activity on our corporate Twitter account and all CBC and Radio-Canada news-related accounts." The broadcaster instead urged Canadians to follow it on other social media. Poilievre said on Twitter last week that he had written to Musk to request that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation be labeled "accurately". Hours later, CBC's Twitter accounts were labeled 'government-funded'. Since Elon Musk bought Twitter last November, the social media company has liberalised the moderation of content on the network. Musk also trimmed Twitter's workforce from 7,500 to fewer than 2,000 employees expanding the post-pandemic layoff spree in the Silicon Valley. <p>The Trades Union Congress (TUC) warned on Tuesday (April 18) that the United Kingdom (UK) government was failing to protect workers against the rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that would increasingly determine hiring and firing, and pay and promotion. According to a report by the Financial Times, the TUC argued that the government was failing to put in place the guard rails needed to protect workers as adoption of AI-powered technologies spread.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These technologies were already widely used to make life-changing decisions across the economy, the union said, adding AI systems were being widely used in recruitment. The TUC also encountered teachers' concerns that they were being monitored by systems originally introduced to track the performance of students. The report said that call centre workers reported that their colleagues were routinely allocated calls by AI programs&nbsp;that were more likely to lead to a good outcome, and so attract a bonus.</p>

<p>Mary Towers, a policy officer at the TUC, said that the rise of generative AI brought the renewed urgency to the need for legislation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"These technologies are often spoken about as the future of work," Towers said, adding the TUC had evidence to show that it was widespread across employment relationships. "These are existing urgent problems in the workplace and they have been for sometime," she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The TUC also pointed out that the government's Data Protection and Digital Information Bill would dilute important existing protections for workers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The government, meanwhile, criticised the TUC's assessment by saying it was wrong. A government spokesperson said that AI was set to drive growth and create new&nbsp;&nbsp;highly paid jobs across the UK.</p>
