Social media platform Twitter on Friday (March 31) made some of its computer code public. The code decides how the platform recommends content. Making part of the code public means that users and programmers would get to glean into how the code works and would be able to suggest modifications to the algorithm.

The company said it uploaded the code in two repositories on code-sharing platform Github. They include the source code for many parts of Twitter, including the recommendations algorithm which controls the tweets that users see on their timeline. Twitter said that the repositories don't include the code that runs the platform's ad recommendation.

Twitter owner and CEO Elon Musk had earlier hinted at revealing Twitter's source code. After he took over the platform last year, Twitterati even asked him repeatedly about the same. Musk had earlier said that code transparency would lead to higher trust among users and rapid improvements to the product.

Musk took over Twitter last year after a protracted negotiation and legal process. There were concerns that under Musk, who is viewed by many to be leaning towards political right wing, Twitter would lose revenue as advertisers would flee the platform. The mass layoffs Musk embarked on after his acquisition did throw up questions on stability of the platform and the company itself. Twitter has since reported major drop&nbsp;in its ad revenue.

Twitter makes part of its source code public

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is blocked in Italy, as per reports. Alleging&nbsp;privacy violations , the Italian privacy&nbsp;regulatory on Friday imposed a ban on the AI application which is gaining grounds in a vast variety of sectors.

The national data protection authorities announced that it will immediately stop processing data of&nbsp;Italian users for OpenAI.&nbsp;It also announced to start an investigation into this.&nbsp;

Another accusation that the Italian regulator levelled against ChatGPT is its alleged failure to check the age of its users. It is essential to note that the AI application is supposed to be for individuals above the age of 13.&nbsp;

"You must be at least 13 years old to use the Services. If you are under 18 you must have your parent or legal guardian’s permission to use the Services. If you use the Services on behalf of another person or entity, you must have the authority to accept the Terms on their behalf," as per ChatGPT's terms of use which is mentioned on its website.&nbsp;

OpenAI has yet not commented on this latest development clarifying the allegations the Italian regulator has made. The privacy regulator said "the absence of any legal basis that justifies the massive collection and storage of personal data in order to 'train' the algorithms underlying the operation of the platform".

According to a UBS study released last month, it is projected to have achieved 100 million monthly active users in January. This is a significant feat given the fact that the OpenAI chatbot was launched only a couple of&nbsp;months ago.

With this, the AI app has become one of the fastest-growing consumer application. Last week, the law enforcement agency&nbsp;of the European Union, Europol&nbsp;issued&nbsp;a warning about the possible use of chatbots in phishing scams, misinformation campaigns, and cyber crimes.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT blocked in Italy over alleged privacy violations

Imagining a life without mobile phones seems impossible today. A lot of us spend most of our waking moments with the device in our hands. Social media has taken our obsession with the mobile phone to a whole new level. Many of us have our eyes glued to the screen for a major chunk of the day. This is exactly why the inventor of the mobile phone himself is "devastated" by his own invention.

Martin Cooper, an American engineer dubbed the "Father of the cell phone", says everyone is a "little obsessed" with mobile phones today.

"I am devastated when I see somebody crossing the street and looking at their cell phone. They are out of their minds," the 94-year-old told AFP from his office in Del Mar, California.

"But after a few people get run over by cars, they'll figure it out," he joked.

But Cooper is one to see the bright side of things and says mobile phones hold immense potential and will one day be able to "revolutionise education and healthcare".

"In the future, we can expect the cell phone to revolutionize education, it will revolutionize healthcare.&nbsp;

"I know that sounds like an exaggeration, but I want you to know within a generation or two, we are going to conquer disease."

Cooper wears an Apple Watch and uses a top-end iPhone. He tests almost every new phone model but confesses that it is all becoming a little too much.

"I will never, ever understand how to use the cell phone the way my grandchildren and great-grandchildren do," he says.

Talking about the first mobile phone, Cooper said a handset used to cost around $5,000. But the early adopters saw an edge in it.&nbsp;

"It turns out that what real estate people do is they show people houses, or they answer the phone for new clients," Cooper recounted.

"Now they could do both at the same time; it doubled their productivity."

Cooper made the first-ever mobile phone call on April 3, 1973, using a weighty block of wires and circuits.&nbsp;

He was working for Motorola at that time and leading a team of designers and engineers aimed at creating a truly mobile technology. The company aimed to beat Bell System, a company that dominated US telecoms for over a century since 1877. Bell System has been thinking about cellular phone systems since the end of World War II. But they could only put it in cars by the late 1960s, mainly because of the huge battery they needed.

But Cooper wanted to make a proper mobile phone that could be used anywhere. By the end of March 1973, he made a breakthrough and unveiled the DynaTAC -- Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage -- phone. It weighed over a kilo and had a battery life of roughly 25 minutes of talking.&nbsp;

The first-ever call he made was to his competitor, Dr Joel Engel at Bell System. Standing on Sixth Avenue (in New York), I said, "Joel, this is Martin Cooper... I'm talking to you on a handheld cell phone. But a real cell phone, personal, portable, handheld."

"There was silence on the other end of the line. I think he was gritting his teeth."

'They are out of their minds': Inventor of mobile phone isn't as happy seeing people use it

Alphabet’s Google Cloud has accused Microsoft of anti-competitive cloud computing practices and criticised imminent deals with several European cloud vendors, saying these do not solve broader concerns about its licensing terms.

In Google Cloud’s first public comments on Microsoft and its European deals its Vice President Amit Zavery told Reuters the company has raised the issue with antitrust agencies and urged European Union antitrust regulators to take a closer look.

In response, Microsoft referred to a blogpost in May last year where its president Brad Smith said it ‘has a healthy number two position when it comes to cloud services, with just over 20 percent market share of global cloud services revenues’.

“We are committed to the European Cloud Community and their success,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Reuters on Thursday.

There is intense rivalry between the two U.S. tech giants in the fast-growing, multi-billion-dollar cloud computing business, where Google trails market leader Amazon and Microsoft.

The sector has recently drawn greater regulatory scrutiny, including in the United States and in Britain, because of the dominance of a few players and its increasingly critical role as more and more companies shift their services to the cloud.

Microsoft has offered to change its cloud computing practices in a deal with a few smaller rivals which in turn will suspend their antitrust complaints, a person with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters this week.

The move will stave off an EU investigation.

“Microsoft definitely has a very anti-competitive posture in cloud. They are leveraging a lot of their dominance in the on-premise business as well as Office 365 and Windows to tie Azure and the rest of cloud services and make it hard for customers to have a choice,” Zavery said in an interview late on Wednesday.

“When we talk to a lot of our customers, they find a lot of these bundling practices, as well as the way they create pricing and licensing restrictions, make it difficult for them to choose other providers,” he added.

<h2>'Unfair advantage'</h2>

Zavery said individual deals struck with several smaller European cloud vendors only benefit Microsoft.

“They’re selectively kind of buying out those ones who complain and not make those terms available to everyone. So that definitely makes it an unfair advantage to Microsoft and ties the people who complained back to Microsoft anyway,”

“Whatever they’re offering, there should be terms across for everybody, not just for one or two they’ve chosen and pick, and that shows you that they have so much market power they can kind of go and do those things individually.”

“My point to the regulators would be that they should look at this holistically, even though one or two vendors might settle doesn’t solve the broader problem. And that’s the problem we need to really resolve, not individual vendors’ problems.”

The European Commission declined to comment.

Microsoft still faces another EU antitrust complaint from CISPE, whose members include Amazon. The trade group has rejected the Microsoft’s changes.

Zavery dismissed the suggestion that the issue is merely a spat between Google and Microsoft.

“The question is not about Google. I just want to make it very clear. It’s the cloud. The premise with cloud was to have an open, flexible way to deploy your software and have customers more choices so that they can run their software in any place they choose to in a much more easy way,” he said.

Google accuses Microsoft of anti-competitive practices in cloud business

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday that the ministry has identified and blocked over 500 apps which were being used for spoofing and committing fraud in India. Shah informed about the development while reviewing the working of the cybercrime centre at NDCC Bhawan in Delhi.

"The apps have been blocked on Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre's (I4C) recommendations due to security reasons and action has been taken as per law," he said.

"Cyber security is no longer limited to the digital world. It is a matter of national security and the Modi government is committed to ensuring that the digital world is safe and secure for everyone," he added.

An analytical report on the modus operandi of the top 50 cyber-attacks has been prepared to understand more about the attack and data has been shared with states. AIIMS cyber attack is also a part of the probe.

The probe said that at least four IP addresses were traced and previously unknown email addresses and phone numbers were found. They all linked back to entities or locations in Chinese territories.

"It assists law enforcement agencies in taking real-time action and restricting the flow of fraudulent funds. Due to quick reporting system and action of the task force, Rs 235 crores embezzled by cybercriminals from over 1.33 lakh people have been recovered so far," Shah said.&nbsp;

Shah also appealed to spread awareness to curb the menace of cybercrime. Shah said the Ministry of Home Affairs is making comprehensive, integrated and all-out efforts to create awareness about various aspects of cyber security and cybercrime.

He further said that I4C is organising Cyber Jagarukta Diwas on the first Wednesday of every month to raise awareness about cyber crimes. The body is also reaching out to all the states to play an active and pivotal role in this initiative and help promote cyber hygiene.&nbsp;

"The apps have been blocked on Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre's (I4C) recommendations due to security reasons and action has been taken as per law," he said. "Cyber security is no longer limited to the digital world. It is a matter of national security and the Modi government is committed to ensuring that the digital world is safe and secure for everyone," he added. An analytical report on the modus operandi of the top 50 cyber-attacks has been prepared to understand more about the attack and data has been shared with states. AIIMS cyber attack is also a part of the probe. The probe said that at least four IP addresses were traced and previously unknown email addresses and phone numbers were found. He attributed this to the gradual rollout of 5G mobile connectivity services in India from 2022-end.&nbsp;

Referring to the trends witnessed in the Indian smartphone market, he said that Indian customers are buying more high-end devices and prefer to get future-proof gadgets, particularly considering the 5G services being available. He also pointed out the sales spike that his firm had been witnessing in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. He says that they have been selling phones (on a 10-month EMI as part of a Samsung Finance Plus initiative) to people in Tier 2 and 3 cities, and small towns, even when the individuals did not have access to credit cards or loans.

As per reports, the system is already in use airports, stadiums and grocery stores. Panera has already deployed the system at two locations in greater St Louis in the US. The chain has outlets at more than 2000 locations across US.&nbsp;

Last week Reuters quoted Amazon Vice President Dilip Kumar who said that the company had deployed the contactless technology with existing customers.&nbsp; 
Amazon reportedly declined to provide growth figures, but in June 2022 the company said more than 69 locations in the U.S. and UK had such technology.

As per The Guardian, customers who would scan their palms at Panera will get recommendations and combinations based on their previous orders. They will also be able to access their credit card and other information associated with their palm scan.

But in times when personal data is widely collected, Amazon's move to go ahead with inclusion of palm-scanning tech has attracted criticism.

In 2021, Denver Arts &amp; Venues dropped its plans of introducing palm-scanning tech for entry at concerts after criticism from digital rights group Fight for the Future.

“The marginal-at-best convenience of scanning a hand instead of a ticket is no excuse for implementing technology that will exacerbate violent systems and cause immeasurable harm,” the group said.

Panera hasn't specified when exactly the palm scanning tech would be deployed.

The meteoric rise of ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI and incorporated by Microsoft in its Bing search engine, opened the eyes of the world towards both the mind-boggling possibilities and pitfalls of AI. Now the question arises: are these companies moving too fast in rolling out AI? In an open letter on Wednesday (March 29), a group of prominent scientists and other tech industry notables, including Tesla and Twitter owner Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, are calling for a six-month pause on training systems more powerful than OpenAI's newly launched model GPT-4 to consider the risks. The letter, which has been signed by more than 1,000 people, is a response to OpenAI’s recent release of GPT-4, a more advanced successor to its widely-used AI chatbot ChatGPT. What does the letter say and why the pause? The letter has warned that AI systems with “human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity” — from flooding the internet with disinformation and automating away jobs, to more catastrophic future risks out of the realms of science fiction." The letter added that recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control. The letter also said that powerful AI systems should be developed only once people are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable. The letter further called on AI labs to immediately pause for at least six months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4. “This pause should be public and verifiable and include all key actors. If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium,” it added. Who has signed the letter? The letter was issued by the Future of Life Institute and signed by more than 1,000 people including Elon Musk. The co-signatories included Stability AI's Chief Executive Officer Emad Mostaque, researchers at Alphabet-owned DeepMind, and AI heavyweights Yoshua Bengio. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Thursday, the letter was not signed by OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Elon Musk, who also runs Tesla and SpaceX and was an OpenAI co-founder and early investor, has long expressed concerns about AI’s existential risks. Earlier this month, Musk said, "AI stresses me out." What has been the response to the letter? Gary Marcus, a professor at New York University who signed the letter, said that the letter isn't perfect but the spirit is right — "We need to slow down until we better understand the ramifications." Marcus added the big players are becoming increasingly sensitive about what they are doing which makes it hard for society to defend against whatever harms may materialise, Reuters reported. In a blog post, Marcus said that he disagrees with others who are worried about the near-term prospect of intelligent machines so smart that they could self-improve beyond humanity’s control. Marcus said he was more worried about “mediocre AI” that is widely deployed, including by criminals or terrorists to trick people or spread dangerous misinformation. "Current technology already poses enormous risks that we are ill-prepared for. With future technology, things could well get worse," the New York University professor wrote. James Grimmelmann, a Cornell University professor of digital and information law, said the pause on the AI race is a good idea but the letter is vague and it does not take the regulatory problems seriously. “It is also deeply hypocritical for Elon Musk to sign on given how hard Tesla has fought against accountability for the defective AI in its self-driving cars,” Grimmelmann added. What is GPT-4? Earlier this month, OpenAI released GPT-4 which it says exhibits human-level performance. "We’ve created GPT-4, the latest milestone in OpenAI’s effort in scaling up deep learning. GPT-4 is a large multimodal model (accepting image and text inputs, emitting text outputs) that, while less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks," Open AI's website said. In an online demo on March 14, OpenAI President Greg Brockman ran through some scenarios that showed off GPT-4′s capabilities. Brockman demonstrated how the system could quickly come up with the proper income tax deduction after being fed reams of tax code — something he couldn’t figure out himself, according to a report by the news agency Associated Press. “It’s not perfect, but neither are you. And together it’s this amplifying tool that lets you just reach new heights,” Brockman added. Amazon warns customers about frequently returned products: Reports

32-year-old civil rights activist Alexander Zharov had just entered a Moscow metro station on August 22, 2022, when police officers stopped him, told him he was on a wanted list and escorted him away.

"When the police approached me in the metro for the first time and demanded that I follow them I asked them to name the reason for detention and their demands. One of the police officers justified this by saying that I was on the wanted list," Zharov.

He had previously been fined and jailed for protesting, and had also been detained in the metro station on May 9 and June 12. Reuters reviewed a video he shared of him entering the metro station on August 22, then being stopped by police. “It's scary,” he said. “Now I know that the subway can be a dangerous place and a place of potential detention.”

To avoid further attention from the police, Zharov moved to Germany via Khazakzstan.

​It’s no secret that the Russian government uses facial recognition to keep an eye on citizens. In 2017, Moscow’s mayor’s office announced that the Russian capital had launched one of the world’s largest video surveillance networks, with 160,000 cameras, including more than 3,000 connected to a facial recognition system.

A Reuters review of more than 2,000 court cases shows these cameras have played an important role in the arrests of hundreds of protesters. Most of these people were detained in 2021 after they joined anti-government demonstrations, court records show. But after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, authorities began using facial recognition to prevent people from protesting in the first place, according to interviews with more than two dozen detainees and information gathered by a Russian monitoring group. Facial recognition is now helping police to identify and sweep up the Kremlin's opponents as a preventive measure, whenever they choose.

Western technology has aided the crackdown. The facial recognition system in Moscow is powered by algorithms produced by one Belarusian company and three Russian firms. At least three of the companies have used chips from U.S. firms Nvidia Corp or Intel Corp in conjunction with their algorithms, Reuters found. There is no suggestion that Nvidia or Intel have breached sanctions.

Reuters also found that the Russian and Belarusian companies participated in a U.S. facial-recognition test program, aimed at evaluating emerging technologies and run by an offshoot of the Department of Commerce. One of the firms received $40,000 in prize money awarded by an arm of U.S. intelligence.

Approached for comment, Nvidia and Intel said they halted all shipments to Russia in March 2022 after the United States tightened export restrictions. They added that they can't always know how their products are used.

Reuters interviewed 29 people who were stopped by police in Moscow metro stations. All but one said they understood from officers that they were flagged for detention by facial recognition.

On May 9, a police officer approached Sergei Pinchuk, a 27-year-old courier, seconds after he entered the Moscow metro. Pinchuk, who wore blue and yellow, the colours of the Ukrainian flag, that day, said police had a handheld electronic device with about 10 photos of him, all seemingly taken by metro security cameras on different dates.

At a nearby police station, a detective pushed him into the wall, grabbed him by the neck and called him names, he said.

A month prior, Pinchuk had stood alone in front of the Kremlin building holding a sign with the words ‘353 Criminal Code of Russia. Stop Putin,' referencing a Russian law that says waging an aggressive war is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The detective asked about this. "He said ‘why did you do that? It's a hard time for our country'," said Pinchuk, who had been arrested, charged and fined for the protest. The detective also threatened to jail him for years and create problems for his family, he said.

In mid-August, Pinchuk and his friend climbed a cell tower in his town Naro-Fominsk, southwest of Moscow, and placed a Ukrainian flag at the top. The next day, while Pinchuk was visiting his parents, his brother called and informed him that police had stopped by Pinchuk's home and were looking for him. A few hours later, Pinchuk was at the airport, catching the first flight he could find to Tbilisi, Georgia. Later police called his mother and texted his friends asking where he was. He decided to relocate to the United States where he said he felt safer. He now lives in Seattle and is seeking asylum.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has reportedly offered stock awards to his employees based on a rough valuation of $20 billion, which is less than half of the $44 billion price he bought the company last year.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) newspaper reported that Musk sent an e-mail to his staff where he was optimistic about the social-media company’s future.

“I see a clear, but difficult, path to a &gt;$250B valuation,” meaning stock granted now would be worth 10 times more, he said, according to the newspaper.

In a separate email late Friday, Twitter told employees that it is offering new equity grants to staff that will start to vest after six months.

The stock-based compensation is a popular practice adopted by tech companies in US to attract talent. Employees are rewarded with stock options that will vest, or become available for purchase, at a later date.

Musk, in his note, pointed out that radical changes are being made so rapidly that the company “can be thought of as an inverse startup.” He added that these changes are necessary in part to ensure that the social media company didn’t go bankrupt.

According to the report, the new grants will vest over four years, and will be in addition to and separate from any legacy Twitter equity that was converted to cash at the time of the acquisition in October 2022.

Twitter is yet to make an official announcement in this regard. When WSJ sought a response, Twitter’s press email responded with a poop emoji—which is the company’s auto-response for media inquires, as mandated by Musk.

When Musk took over Twitter last year, several questions were raised on how Twitter would handle compensation going forward as a private company.

At that time, the company, in a regulatory filing, said that employees’ stock grants would be converted into the right to receive cash for $54.20 a share, the acquisition price.

In February, the tech billionaire told staff in an email that Twitter would make “very significant stock and other compensation awards, based on performance.”&nbsp;He said that the employees would get more information on March 24.

Intel Corp co-founder, Gordon Moore who is also hailed as a pioneer for his work in the semiconductor industry and Silicon Valley has passed away at the age of 94 in Hawaii, United States. According to a statement by Intel and Moore’s family philanthropic foundation, he died on Friday (March 24) surrounded by family at his home.&nbsp;

Moore and his longtime colleague Robert Noyce co-founded Intel in July 1968, where the former initially served as executive vice president until 1975, when he became president and also went on to become the chief executive and chairman of the board.

In an article published around six decades ago, Moore noted that due to technological advancements, the number of transistors on microchips had roughly doubled every year since integrated circuits were invented a few years before.&nbsp;

“Integrated circuits will lead to such wonders as home computers – or at least terminals connected to a central computer – automatic controls for automobiles, and personal portable communications equipment,” Moore had written, as per Reuters.

The prediction of the trend was at least 20 years before the PC revolution and more than 40 years before Apple launched the iPhone which came to be known as “Moore’s Law”. The insight had become the core of the computer processor industry and is said to have influenced the PC revolution.&nbsp;

After his article, in 1965, chips rapidly became less expensive and more efficient which also helped in driving the world’s technological progress for nearly half a century. This allowed the advent of not just personal computers but the internet and Silicon Valley giants such as Apple, Facebook and Google.&nbsp;

According to reports, the number of transistors on microchips has nearly doubled every year since integrated circuits were invented a few years earlier. Notably, he had also gone on to revise the law and said the doubling would occur every two years.

Moore earned his PhD in chemistry and physics at the California Institute of Technology and joined Fairchild Semiconductor Laboratory, in 1957 one of the earliest firms to manufacture commercially viable transistors and integrated circuits. As the company grew, it led to the transformation of the peninsula of land south of San Francisco into what is now known as Silicon Valley.&nbsp;

In 1968, Noyce and Moore quit Fairchild, to start the memory chip company soon to be named Intel, an abbreviation of Integrated Electronics and their first hire was another Fairchild colleague, Andy Grove who went on to become the CEO. “All I was trying to do was get that message across, that by putting more and more stuff on a chip we were going to make all electronics cheaper”, said Moore in 2008. In the same year, he retired from Intel in 2008.&nbsp;

In 2023 Forbes magazine estimated Moore’s net worth at $7.2 billion. Notably, over his lifetime Moore has donated more than $5.1 billion to charitable causes through the foundation which he set up with his wife Betty, over two decades ago. Moore was also a longtime sport fisherman, pursuing his passion all over the world.&nbsp;

Billionaire Jeff Bezos' space company Blue Origin on Friday expressed hopes of resuming flights of its grounded rockets soon. The company's New Shepard suborbital rockets were grounded following an accident in September 2022 that happened shortly after the space vehicle's liftoff from Texas. An investigation into the accident involving the rockets meant to be used for space tourism, among other purposes, is scheduled to be concluded soon.&nbsp;Blue Origin says that it "expects to return to flight soon" re-flying the same NS-23 payloads.

The probe that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is overseeing as per the regulatory body is still open. FAA said that it was "currently reviewing the company's submission of its mishap report."

"FAA approval is required to close the investigation and for the New Shepard System to return to flight," it added in its statement.

Even though, as per AFP,&nbsp;the incident was a blow to Bezos' company, onlookers were reportedly comforted by the probability that had there been passengers, they would have likely been unscathed.

During the mission involving a single booster rocket, there was an anomaly which happened as the vehicle was climbing towards space. Due to the malfunction,&nbsp;the rocket stalled, but the Blue Origin's NS-23 capsule, which was carrying a scientific payload, initiated its escape sequence and out speeding the booster, fell back to Earth.

The booster instead of landing upright&nbsp;— its usual landing position&nbsp;—&nbsp;"impacted the ground" and subsequently, the investigation was launched.&nbsp;Since 2021, Blue Origin has 'safely' flown 32 people — some of them paying customers and some guests. Amazon founder Bezos himself was part of the first flight.

Google’s Bard chatbot, described as an “experimental conversational AI service,” was launched for users in the US and the UK on Tuesday (March 21). The Alphabet Inc-owned tech giant had originally announced Bard last month and said last week that it would integrate generative AI features across the apps in its Workspace productivity suite.&nbsp;

Bard has been designed to respond to written prompts using information sourced from websites and has also been seen as Google’s bid to compete with the viral ChatGPT. While the Google AI is still an “early experiment” the company was “extremely excited…watching how people are using this product in a way that’s boosting their creativity,” said Google employee and product lead for Bard, Jack Krawczyk, as per the Guardian.

“You can use Bard to boost your productivity, accelerate your ideas and fuel your curiosity. You might ask Bard to give you tips to reach your goal of reading more books this year, explain quantum physics in simple terms or spark your creativity by outlining a blog post,” said Google VP of product Sissie Hsiao and VP of research Eli Collins, in a blog post on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Based on Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Application or LaMDA, Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models, Google CEO Sundar Pichai had said previously.&nbsp;

In the recent blog post, the VPs also noted that since Bard is powered by a research large language model (LLM), “a lightweight and optimized version” of LaMDA, it gets things wrong sometimes.&nbsp;

It added, “because they learn from a wide range of information that reflects real-world biases and stereotypes, those sometimes show up in their outputs…can provide inaccurate, misleading or false information while presenting it confidently.”&nbsp;

Therefore, a screenshot of the chatbot shared by Google also shows that the users are first presented with a blank chat box with a disclaimer which reads, “Bard may display inaccurate or offensive information that doesn’t represent Google’s views.”

This also comes after shares of Google’s parent company plunged by at least eight per cent and it lost more than $100 billion in market value on February 8 when Bard had flubbed an answer when it was first introduced. Google has also previously explained that Bard would work particularly well for “NORA” queries which mean questions which have “no one right answer”.&nbsp;

Google launches its AI chatbot ‘Bard’ for users in US, UK

India will be a "significant pole" in the universe of artificial intelligence (AI) going forward, said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who is the Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology.&nbsp;

In an exclusive interview with Vikram Chandra for WION's 'The India Story' show, Chandrasekhar said that the "biggest use case that India AI will seek to develop an application for, is on governance, democracy 2.0, and that type of application that impacts the lives of Indian people".&nbsp;

Chandrasekhar, who is also the Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, said that "we [India] have gone from being a nobody in 2014 to being today a country which has reasonable ambitions."&nbsp;

"I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that India will be a significant pole in the universe of AI going forward. We are today, with India's AI policy, assembling what is going to be one of the world's highest quality and most diverse data sets programmes."&nbsp;

Referring to ChatGPT, which is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI, he said that he world is at a very early stage of AI. He said, "ChatGPT is not all things AI, and it is an indicator which tells the rest of the world that this is the potential power of AI, if harnessed right."&nbsp;

The minister said that bias is an important problem in AI, and ChatGPT proves that "occasionally."&nbsp;He noted that "one of the things that we are doing is to position our programme as one of the bias-free and diverse in the world."&nbsp;

"We are at the beginning of the race today, we are at the starting line, but certainly we will be in the leading pact in terms of shaping the future of AI, applications, and use cases of AI that will benefit the citizens," said Chandrasekhar as he talked of India's prospects despite the United States and China being leading leaders currently.&nbsp;

<h2>AI's impact on jobs</h2>

Experts and analysts have said that the recent launches of AI tools in the area of creative writing, learning techniques, etc will cause dramatic changes in the dynamics of jobs and employment. &nbsp;

Chandrasekhar explained that "if you look at the history of technology, what we have seen with the semiconductors and electronics, then with the internet, and with the AI &nbsp;- is that an idea takes shape, gets formed, and suddenly there's coming together of all the ingredients required to create a critical mass."&nbsp;

He said, "This is the case with big historical developments in the area of technology. An idea takes root, pieces of it come together, and there's a certain point in history when it becomes a force."&nbsp;

Chandrasekhar weighed in on the cons of AI as he said that regulation and guardrails are a must. He said, "I tend not to get swayed by or panicked by these doomsday scenarios of suddenly a computer becoming a human, super intelligence and all of that. I am of the view that human intelligence certainly, as the history of the world has shown, will keep pace with or will track ahead with the mission ahead."&nbsp;

He said, "If we wake up to the risks of a particular technology, for us to regulate it and create guardrails is not a difficult task. But it has to be recognised by the government of the world, the people of the world."&nbsp;

Citing a report from Toronto-based company Feroot Security, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday (March 21) that a review of websites of over 3,500 companies, organisations and governments entities by Feroot found that the so-called tracking pixels from ByteDance were present in 30 American state government websites across 27 states, including those where TikTok was banned from state networks and devices.&nbsp;

The report said that administrators who manage government websites use such pixels to help measure the effectiveness of advertising they have purchased on TikTok. This helps government agencies determine how many people saw an advertisement on the social media platform and took an action such as visiting a website or signing up for a service.

The report added that pixels' proliferation offers another vector for data collection beyond TikTok's mobile app, which has been severely criticised in the US as a possible way for China to collect data on American citizens.&nbsp;

Feroot's Chief Executive Ivan Tsarynny said that TikTok's pixels could be watching and recording people when they are reviewing their driver's licence, paying taxes or filing out doctors' forms. Tsarynny said that pixels should be removed from the websites of government agencies and companies which collect personal details.&nbsp;

Security experts have pointed out that while web-tracking pixels ostensibly aim to better pinpoint advertising, they also pose privacy threats.&nbsp;

Replicating a sampling of Feroot Security's findings, The Wall Street Journal identified TikTok tracking pixel in the code of a Maryland Department of Health Covid website and a Utah government website aimed at helping job seekers. Recently, both Maryland and Utah issued executive orders banning TikTok from state-owned devices and networks.&nbsp;

However, this tracking pixel remained embedded in these two websites as recently as last week.

Speaking to the publication, a spokesperson from the Utah Department of Workforce Services said that the department works with an advertising agency to run educational campaigns that inform the state's residents about how to access programmes that could help them get a better jobs. The spokesperson added the tracking pixel was used in such a campaign.&nbsp;

On the other hand, a spokesperson from Maryland's health department said that the pixel on its website was part of an advertising campaign launched in August and the state was investigating why it remained on the site after the campaign ended. The spokesperson added that the pixel was removed as of March 17.&nbsp;

A spokesperson from TikTok, meanwhile, said that the data that the platform receives from advertisers are used to improve the effectiveness of our advertising services.&nbsp;

“Our terms instruct advertisers not to share certain data with us, and we continuously work with our partners to avoid inadvertent transmission of such data," the spokesperson added.&nbsp;

The firms such as Bank of America Corp. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Citigroup Inc., Deutsche Bank AG and Wells Fargo &amp; Co.&nbsp;have banned ChatGPT at their offices worldwide. The development came after Glassdoor-owned Fishbowl&nbsp;found that over 40 per cent of the professionals, including bankers, were using ChatGPT to write emails and reports. Most used the Artificial Intelligence tool without telling their bosses.

About one-third of HR leaders polled by Gartner said that they were not planning to issue any policies on the use of ChatGPT by their employees. Among the notables, hedge fund giant Citadel has embraced ChatGPT.

Meanwhile, Microsoft Corp. debuted its revamped suite of Office applications on Thursday. Microsoft has integrated OpenAI’s new GPT-4 AI model into Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Word. The new Microsoft Office suit is currently being tested with 20 companies, Bloomberg reported.&nbsp;

The firms working on rules around the use of generative Artificial Intelligence are likely still in an exploratory phase,&nbsp;Eser Rizaoglu, senior director analyst in the Gartner HR practice told Bloomberg.&nbsp;

"They are probably questioning how much guidance, which roles will potentially use it or will not be able to use it, and if they should completely ban it or not," Rizaoglu said.

ChatGPT ban? Companies formulate new policies to regulate use of Artificial Intelligence

Google, which laid off around 6 per cent of its total workforce in January, is reportedly adopting more cost-cutting measures, like not making payment for maternity and medical leaves which it approved to its former employees.&nbsp;

As per a report published by CNBC, all the former employees of Google who were sacked while they were on their medical or maternity leave have claimed that the tech giant is not paying them for their approved leaves.&nbsp;

A group called "Laid off on Leave" has been joined by more than 100 former employees who are demanding the employer compensate them for the long-duration leaves which were approved by the company before the job cuts were announced in January.&nbsp;

According to the report, the former employees have been told by the tech giant that the company will pay their salary only till their designated end date along with the standard severance.

Three letters have been sent by the group of former employees to executives, which includes CEO Sundar Pichai and Chief People Officer Fiona Cicconi, but no response has been received so far.&nbsp;

The group comprises people who were sanctioned or are currently on medical leave, baby bonding leave, personal leave, maternity leave and caregiver’s leave.&nbsp;

In January, Google announced mass layoffs which affected 12,000 employees or around 6 per cent of its total workforce due to the declining sales growth after extending its expansion period in the tech sector.&nbsp;

Even though the&nbsp;AI-powered ChatGPT may have bowled over tech enthusiasts across the world with its human-like responses to complex solutions, the CEO of OpenAI, the company that spawned this application, has raised some serious concerns about its dangerous capabilities and how it might impact the livelihood of millions of people.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

During an interview with ABC News, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman&nbsp;admitted that they are “a little bit scared” of their creation, saying that it may wipe out a lot of current jobs.

“We’ve got to be careful here…I think people should be happy that we are a little bit scared of this,” the 37-year-old tech entrepreneur said on Friday.

When asked to explain why he was “scared”, Altman replied that if he wasn’t “scared” then “you should either not trust me or be very unhappy that I’m in this job.”&nbsp;

“It is going to&nbsp;eliminate a lot of current jobs, that’s true. We can make much better ones. The reason to develop AI at all, in terms of impact on our lives and improving our lives and upside, this will be the greatest technology humanity has yet developed,” he said.

‘A bit scared’: OpenAI CEO says ChatGPT may wipe out current jobs

Huawei's founder Ren Zhengfei said that the Chinese technology giant has replaced thousands of product components that are banned in the United States with homegrown versions, the news agency AFP reported on Saturday (March 18) citing a transcript posted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University on Friday. Former US president Donald Trump's administration had effectively barred American companies from doing business with Huawei. And Trump's successor Joe Biden imposed further sanctions including a ban on sales of new Huawei equipment to the US.&nbsp;

These moves have forced the company to find new ways to obtain semiconductors and other parts. According to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University's transcript, Zhengfei said on February 24 that Huawei replaced over 13,000 components with domestic versions in the last three years. He said that Huawei also redeveloped over 4,000 circuit boards for its products.&nbsp;

"As of now, our circuit board (production) has stabilised, because we have a supply of domestically produced components," the Huawei founder added but did not provide details regarding which specific parts were being sourced from within China or what proportion of the company's total supply they represented.

During the talk, Zhengfei further said that there were still difficulties with manufacturing advanced microchips in China and so Huawei has to find other ways of making up ground (with the US) on chips. In 2022, the company spent $23.8 billion on research and development, Zhengfei said, adding that it would invest more in the coming years as profits increase.&nbsp;

"We're still in a difficult period, but have not stopped on the road towards progress," the founder added.&nbsp;

These moves have forced the company to find new ways to obtain semiconductors and other parts. According to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University's transcript, Zhengfei said on February 24 that Huawei replaced over 13,000 components with domestic versions in the last three years. He said that Huawei also redeveloped over 4,000 circuit boards for its products. In 2022, the company spent $23.8 billion on research and development, Zhengfei said, adding that it would invest more in the coming years as profits increase. "We're still in a difficult period, but have not stopped on the road towards progress," the founder added. Twitter owner Elon Musk on Friday announced that the social media platform will soon make public the long-secret algorithm for recommending tweets.

The code through which recommendations for posts are made to users will become "open source" by the end of March, said Musk in a tweet.&nbsp;

“Twitter will open source all code used to recommend tweets on March 31st,” Musk tweeted.

“Our “algorithm” is overly complex &amp; not fully understood internally. People will discover many silly things, but we’ll patch issues as soon as they’re found! We’re developing a simplified approach to serve more compelling tweets, but it’s still a work in progress. That’ll also be open source,” he added.

“Providing code transparency will be incredibly embarrassing at first, but it should lead to rapid improvement in recommendation quality. Most importantly, we hope to earn your trust,” Musk further stated.

Making the code open source would mean developers, including aspiring rivals, would be able to put their own spins on the algorithm, according to a foundation for the software ecosystem.

Soon after billionaire Musk took over Twitter in October, the micro-blogging platform suffered multiple outages, went through massive layoffs and saw advertisers end their ties with the company due to doubts on&nbsp;content moderation.

However, so far Twitter's no major alternative has emerged, forcing politicians, global leaders and celebrities to carry out their communication through the platform.

Meanwhile, Facebook's parent company Meta recently announced that they are working on a new "text sharing" social media network.

"We're exploring a standalone, decentralised social network for sharing text updates," said Meta in a short email statement.

"We believe there's an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests," the statement further read.
