Twitter chief Elon Musk, on early Sunday (March 6) confirmed that users on the microblogging platform can send “longform tweets” with up to 10,000 characters. While responding to a user’s question, Musk also said that the feature would be rolled out “soon” without giving any specific timeline.&nbsp;

The announcement was made after Youtuber and Twitter user @ThePrimeagen asked Musk, “The dev community and I were wondering if you could add code blocks to tweets?” To which the microblogging platform’s CEO said, “As an attachment? How many chars? We are extending longform tweets to 10k soon.” As of now, a regular Twitter user is allowed to post tweets with only 280 characters.&nbsp;

“Starting today, you’ll get a heads up if a Community Note starts showing on a Tweet you’ve replied to, Liked or Retweeted. This helps give people extra context that they might otherwise miss,” read the tweet.&nbsp;

Internal data suggests that the measures put in place to control trolls had reduced trolling by as much as 60 per cent. However, since now there is no one to handle these aspects, it is getting pretty chaotic, the former Twitter employee says.

In this, international numbers pretend to be local, thereby robbing telecom operators of hefty international call fees. As per Communications Fraud Control Association's 'Fraud Loss Survey' report for 2021, globally the SIM box fraud has cost the telecom industry around $3.11 billion, or approximately 7.8 per cent of the industry's total revenue. During the past few years, it has actually emerged as one of the top telecom scams.

How does it work?

This is a bypass fraud. Scammers use Sim Boxes to redirect international calls over the internet and make them look like local calls.

This device, called a SIM box, routes the connections back into the network as local calls, using hundreds of low-cost or even unpaid SIM cards, which are often obtained with forged identities."

They thus benefit by exploiting the "difference between local and international charges by paying just local rates or none at all to cell carriers after billing international rates from the source."

The US Justice Department has alleged that Alphabet Inc's Google has destroyed internal corporate communications, thereby destroying important evidence in the antitrust lawsuit filed against the company by the United States. Lawyers for the department have asked a federal judge to sanction the company as part of the American government's antitrust case over Google's search business. As per a Reuters report, the DOJ on Thursday asserted that Google failed to suspend a policy in a timely manner, allowing for the automatic and permanent deletion of employees' chat logs.

"Our teams have conscientiously worked for years to respond to inquiries and litigation," said a Google spokesperson.&nbsp;

This sanctions attempt marks the second time that the US government has sought to punish Google.&nbsp;Last year, the DOJ alleged Google unfairly kept internal documents away from antitrust investigators, claiming they were protected by the attorney-client privilege. Google, at the time, had denied the allegation.

Yen, while recalling the beginning of war in Ukraine last February, said that Proton saw "a 9,000 per cent increase in sign-ups over just a period of a few days," reflecting the impact of Russian decision to block the access of news sites which it claimed were spreading misinformation during the initial days of&nbsp;Russian offensive on Ukraine.&nbsp;

The Switzerland-based VPN service provider also saw a huge surge in demand for its VPNs in Iran last October, as authorities began cracking down&nbsp;on internet access amid&nbsp;protests following Mahsa Al-Amini's custodial death.

"It was a factor of 10 at least," said Yen, a 34-year-old particle physicist who worked at Europe's physics lab CERN before founding Proton in 2014.

"If there is a coup happening in Africa, we see it in our data before it makes the news," he added.&nbsp;

Proton says that its mission of ensuring privacy and online access is a vital tool in keeping&nbsp;democracies alive and kicking&nbsp;in the digital age.

"Privacy is something that is essential for freedom," Yen said.

Prof Hassan Ugail, director of the centre for visual computing at the University of Bradford, who along with his team is refining the AI's ability to analyse images explained, "Currently when an organ becomes available, it is assessed by a surgical team by sight."

This, as per him, "means, occasionally, organs will be deemed not suitable for transplant."

He further elaborated that OrQA will be used to assess images of donor organs in a more effective manner than "what the human eye can see."

OrQA will do this by looking for damage and pre-existing conditions in the organs. It will also monitor how well blood has been flushed out of the donor organ. To use the tool, surgeons will just have to upload a picture of the donated organ and the tool will guide them on how best to use it.

“Imagine a multi-billion dollar client who refused to pay you for good work rendered. Most people would turn to lawyers. I turned to ChatGPT. Here's the story of how I recovered $109,500 without spending a dime on legal fees,” Isenberg wrote on Twitter.

In keeping with his account, he stated that his business handled some design work for a brand last year that was well-received. The customer continued requesting more work, and the business kept exceeding expectations. When it was time for payment, the brand, however, stopped communicating. The CEO said that they had never had a customer skip out on payments and that this had caused the morale of the entire workforce to suffer. Then it was his turn to intervene.

"Instead of sending another email that might fall on deaf ears or hiring an expensive lawyer to initiate debt collections, I had an idea. What if ChatGPT could draft a bit more of a scary email to draw attention? At the very least, I'd learn something. The cost of ChatGPT: USD 0. The cost of our lawyer to send this notice: USD 1,000. So, we asked ChatGPT to pretend to draft “a scary collection email” so we can recover the USD 109,500 owed to us," Isenberg added.

He then revealed the prompt he used and the email text that ChatGPT had created, adding that he had forwarded the same to the customer after making a few small adjustments. To his astonishment, the customer reacted to the correspondence quickly and stated, 'let's get you guys paid'.

The prompt used by the CEO was, “Pretend you work in the finance department and your job is to collect payments from clients. Draft a scary email that gets XYZ client to pay for USD 109,500 of services rendered but hasn't responded to 5 emails. Their invoices are 5 months overdue.”

Making a re-entry into the social media arena, Twitter's former CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey launched his platform Bluesky, an alternative to Twitter. Currently, the application is in the testing phase and can be searched on the Apple App Store. 
 
According to a report published by TechCrunch, currently, the micro-blogging platform Bluesky&nbsp;is in invite-only beta and will soon see a public launch. 
 
The iOS app was first made available by its creators on February 17 and since then has been installed around 2,000 times in the testing phase, as per app intelligence firm data.ai.

The user interface of Bluesky has been kept simple and the blueness of Twitter has been retained. Users have been given 256 characters to create a post, which includes photos by just clicking on the app's plus button. 
 
In the micro-blogging site Twitter, when users create a post they are asked “What's happening?" whereas, in Bluesky, the message that pops up is “What’s up?". 
 
As per reports, the users of Bluesky have been given the ability to mute, block and share accounts. However, advanced tools like adding accounts to a list are still not available on the app. The app also gives the suggestion of "who to follow" and has the classic feed where all the recent updates from the accounts followed can be scrolled. 
 
"Another tab lets you check on your notifications, including likes, reposts, follows and replies, also much like Twitter. There are no DMs," as per the report. Similar to features available on Twitter, users can search and follow other accounts and check their updates in their Home timeline. The user profiles will feature a bio, background, profile picture and metrics.

The New York Times reported on Sunday that the social media giant has laid off at least 200 employees, or 10 per cent of its workforce. Reports have mentioned that Twitter now has around 2,000 employees,&nbsp;down from 7,500 when Elon Musk took over.&nbsp;

The report mentioned that the latest layoffs include product managers, big data experts and engineers working on machine learning and platform reliability.&nbsp;

Media reports mentioned that some of the employees received an email regarding the layoff late Saturday night. Some found out about the firing when they could not log into the company's internal system. However, Twitter did not immediately confirm the reports.&nbsp;

Angry Twitter employee says 'hard work was a mistake' after fresh round of jobs cuts

Pokemon's last major smartphone hit, Pokemon Go, had fans on the move hunting the lovable characters, but its next release will focus on a more relaxing activity: sleep.

The Pokemon Company has revealed it will release Pokemon Sleep across most of the world in summer 2023, four years after it first announced plans for the game.

"Turn your sleep into entertainment," the company said in a press release late Monday.

Trailers for the new game suggest it combines a smartphone sleep tracker with gaming.

"Your adventure takes place on a small island where you'll carry out research on how Pokemon sleep. You'll work with a large Snorlax who lives on the island and Neroli, a professor who's studying Pokemon sleep styles."

"The longer you sleep, the higher your score in the morning, and the more Pokemon you'll see appear around Snorlax," the company said, urging players to "rest your very best!" 
 
Fans will also be able to buy a Pokemon GO Plus + -- a Pokeball-shaped gadget that users can place by their pillow, with Pikachu's voice offering "cute prompts when it's time to wake up or go to sleep".

The company's Pokemon Go game, which saw players track down the "pocket monsters" using their phones, was an international phenomenon.

The free game uses satellite locations, graphics and camera capabilities to overlay cartoon characters on real-world settings, challenging players to capture and train the creatures.

But players were blamed for traffic accidents and other violations as they roamed the streets, buried in their phones.

Pokemon has been a global hit since it was launched as a role-playing game in 1996 for Nintendo's Game Boy console.&nbsp;

The franchise, whose slogan is Gotta Catch 'Em All, also includes movies and a hugely popular animated TV show.

'Rest your best!': Pokemon Sleep game coming this year

Shareholders of Tesla have sued CEO Elon Musk and the electric car-making company over “false and misleading” claims about the safety of their electric vehicles' Autopilot and Full Self-Driving technologies.

In a class action suit filed in San Francisco federal court on Monday, the shareholders have alleged that the company lied to them over four years by concealing how its technologies – suspected as a possible cause of multiple fatal crashes – “created a serious risk of accident and injury”.

They recalled when Tesla’s share price fell several times after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began probing the technologies, and reports that the Securities and Exchange Commission was investigating Musk's Autopilot claims.

“As a result of defendants’ wrongful acts and omissions, and the precipitous decline in the market value of the company’s common stock, plaintiff and other class members have suffered significant losses and damages,” the complaint said.

The suit seeks unspecified damages for Tesla shareholders from February 19, 2019, to February 17, 2023. Chief financial officer Zachary Kirkhorn and his predecessor Deepak Ahuja are also defendants.

On Monday, Tesla's share price rose up by $10.75 at the closing, or 5.5 per cent at $207.63, but the stock has lost about half its value since peaking in November 2021.

The world's second-richest person is expected at Tesla's March 1 investor day to promote the company's artificial intelligence capability and plans to expand its vehicle line-up.

This is not the first time that Musk was sued by the company’s shareholders. The tech billionaire was dragged to court over his 2018 tweets indicating that he would take Tesla private. The shareholders said that the tweets cost them millions of dollars. Earlier this month, the court had ruled in favour of Musk.

In another lawsuit continuing this week, shareholders claimed that they received “misleading” information that led them to approve an exorbitant pay package for the billionaire.

With this recent cut, Musk has done at least four rounds of layoffs.&nbsp;

To be noted, Elon Musk laid off around 200 Twitter employees over the weekend which translates to around 10 per cent of the total remaining employee count. Twitter also removed some executives including Musk loyalist Esther Crawford who was positioned to roll out Twitter Blue. &nbsp;

Now, the company likely has less than 2,000 employees, which was about 7,500 when Musk took over.

The latest round of layoffs has come a week after Twitter reportedly made it difficult for its&nbsp;employees to communicate with each other. Slack, the internal messaging platform that Twitter used was taken offline.

As per the report, those fired include data scientists, product managers and engineers who worked on machine learning and site reliability.

Twitter has appeared to struggle since its takeover by Musk. Musk acquired the company for $44 billion. The billionaire, who is perceived by many to subscribe to opinions leaning towards the political right, has attempted to cut costs by way of mass layoffs. The platform is still struggling to lure back advertisers who are reportedly worried about the stability of the company.

Musk, who claims to be a 'free speech absolutist,'&nbsp;came under fire after the platform chose to deactivate the account of a user who used information in public domain to track Musk's private jet. The criticism was sharper when Twitter appeared to suspend accounts of journalists who reported on the matter. Musk was seen as someone attempting to stifle free speech.

There hasn't been any immediate reaction from Twitter over the latest mass layoffs.

He said in an interview, “We want to launch a new brand that is focusing very much on the networks and industrial digitalisation, which is a completely different thing from the legacy mobile phones,” as reported by Livemint.&nbsp;

Nokia-branded mobile devices are still available for purchase through HMD Global Oy. The name's rights were purchased by HMD when Microsoft Corp., which bought the business in 2014, discontinued using it.

<h2>Shift in strategy</h2>

Nokia still wants to expand its service provider business, which involves selling equipment to telecom providers, but it's primary objective right now is to sell equipment to other firms.

“We had very good 21 per cent growth last year in enterprise, which is currently about eight per cent of our sales, (or) 2 billion euros ($2.11 billion) roughly,” Lundmark said. “We want to take that to double digits as quickly as possible,” as per a Reuters report.

The majority of their clients are in the manufacturing sector, thus major technology companies have started collaborating with telecom equipment manufacturers like Nokia to provide private 5G networks and equipment for automated factories to them.

By providing network equipment to wireless service providers, Lundmark stated that Nokia will concentrate on growing its market share in the company's operations, as reported by Livemint.&nbsp;

He added by stating that Nokia now has “the ammunition and the tools,”&nbsp;to gain market share without compromising margins. This has been made possible by limits placed on Huawei Technologies Co., a Chinese rival, after some European governments forbade the business from supplying components for 5G networks, according to&nbsp;Livemint.

Nokia also plans on assessing the development of each of its companies and exploring alternatives, including divestment.

According to&nbsp;Telecoms, CEO Lundmark said, “We see the potential of digital to transform business, industry and society with an opportunity for significant gains in productivity, sustainability, and accessibility. Our market-leading critical networking technology is increasingly needed by customers and partners in every industry. We see a future where networks go beyond connecting people and things. EU industry chief Thierry Breton on Thursday launched a 12-week consultation on its "fair share" proposals, under which Big Tech platforms would bear more of the costs of the systems which give them access to consumers.

Representatives from companies including Alphabet, Meta and Netflix are expected to use the conference as a platform to push back against the EU proposals.

Content providers like Netflix, which has arranged for its CEO Greg Peters to meet with Breton at the conference, argue their firms already invest heavily in infrastructure.

They say that if additional fees are forced onto them, this will have adverse effect in investment in products that benefit consumers.

By contrast, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefonica and Telecom Italia have been actively lobbying for Big Tech to pay the fees.

GSMA, an association representing more than 750 mobile operators and the organising body behind MWC, has been at the forefront of the debate.

"This discussion around 'fair share', or what we sometimes call the 'investment gap', is going to be a threshold question," said John Giusti, GSMA's chief regulatory officer.

Critics of the fair share or "SPNP" (Sending Party Network Pays) model have warned the so-called "traffic tax" could lead content-driven platforms to route their services via ISPs (internet service providers) outside of the EU.

Orange told Reuters the telecoms industry was not asking for special privileges in its demands. A spokesperson said the EU's consultation was a "positive first sign" of a debate starting.

"We argue for a framework that will facilitate a fair and equitable commercial relationship that recognizes a direct contribution by tech giants to network costs," they said.

Regulations will, however, be difficult to implement and enforce, said Shahid Ahmed, executive vice president at NTT and an adviser to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.

"We saw something very similar - the whole net neutrality debate - attempted in the U.S.," he said. Ahmed was quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;

The logo, which appears to be part of a new corporate strategy was announced a day before the annual Mobile World Congress (MWC2023), in which the company will unveil the business update. The annual event opens in Barcelona on Monday and runs until March 2.&nbsp;

Lundmark has set out a strategy with three stages: reset, accelerate and scale; the second stage is beginning, with the reset stage now complete.&nbsp;

Lundmark took over the top job at the struggling Finnish company in 2020.&nbsp;

Lundmark said: "We had very good 21% growth last year in enterprise, which is currently about 8% of our sales, (or) 2 billion euros ($2.11 billion) roughly. We want to take that to double digits as quickly as possible."&nbsp;

Mexican governors have gone to new extremes to promote their states, by installing billboards, constructing dedicated lanes for cars, or making mockups of Tesla ads, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Tesla has not given in any official word and there is no assurance that it will construct a full-fledged&nbsp;plant. The hype is unfounded, and the major source of it is Mexican officials' claims that Tesla CEO Elon Musk would soon get on a phone call with Mexico president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

<h2>'Welcome Tesla' billboards</h2>

Nuevo Leon, an industrial state in the north, appeared to hold an early lead in the competition.

It created "Welcome Tesla" billboards in the state capital of Monterrey in December after painting the Tesla emblem on a lane at the Colombian border crossing into Texas last summer. It also featured&nbsp;Mariana Rodriguez, the state governor's influencer&nbsp;wife, appearing&nbsp;in photos from a gathering with Musk.

That sparked an aggressive scramble among the other Mexican states.&nbsp;

“Veracruz is the only state with an excess of gas,” quipped Gov. Cuitláhuac García of the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, before quickly adding “gas … for industrial use, for industrial use!”

Being a late entrant, Garca had to work harder. He pointed out that Veracruz was home to Mexico's sole nuclear power plant. Moreover, he said that Veracruz was responsible for 30% of Mexico's water supply, despite the fact that the National Water Commission estimates the state's contribution to be closer to 11%. It seems that water is thicker than blood.

For instance, he stated in 2019 that he would have a fleet of completely autonomous robotaxis operating on the roads by 2020. Tesla has yet to sell any autonomous vehicles over three years later.

In an analysis this month, 117 out of 251 adverts shown by Google UK to a user searching 40 key phrases, including “NHS abortion advice”, “confidential abortion support” and “pregnant teenager help”, were from groups opposed to abortion.

The findings show the marketing strategies used by anti-abortion organisations in the UK and have raised worries that women may be subjected to inaccurate information while seeking medical guidance. One organisation that promotes sexual health called the advertisements "clearly immoral."

The adverts in the analysis—which were presented to a woman in her 20s in London in early February—contain a small tag designating them as advertisements, but they otherwise resemble genuine search results and show up above reliable information sources, such as the NHS website. In some cases, they promote advisory services that assert to provide unbiased support while hiding the anti-abortion ideologies of those who support them.

Pregnancy Crisis Helpline, one of the most prominent marketers, saw advertisements show up following searches for 14 of the 40 terms included in the report. Several of them read, "Considering an abortion? After searches for "buy abortion pill" and "help for pregnant teenagers," the phrase "talk to someone" surfaced.

Regan King, a pastor of the Angel church in London's Islington, is on the board of the hotline. She has called abortion "Disgusting. Disturbing. Grim, gruesome, horrific, shocking, and awful". It was compared to "the new slave trade" and branded "vile." Christian Clive Copus is a different trustee.

Stella Creasy, a Labour MP who has advocated for reproductive healthcare access, urged the government to order tech companies to delete potentially damaging postings. There is a distinction, according to her, between enabling free expression and "seeking to mislead vulnerable readers who need to be confident that what they are reading is medically sound and impartial," she added.

February 10&nbsp;marked the second anniversary of China's ambitious Tianwen 1 mission — which also happens to be the nation's first interplanetary mission. Amid the celebration, one voice remained silent, that of China's Zhurong Mars rover, which was sent to the surface of the red planet as part of Beijing's Tianwen 1 mission. The Chinese rover has been in "hibernation" for months. It was supposed to wake up back in December of last year. However, almost two months later, its slumber still continues. Last month, a report expressed hope that Zhurong would come out of its sleep, but recent images from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show that it hasn't changed its position for five months.

Five months and counting...NASA images show China's Mars rover 'Zhurong' hasn't moved

A serial hacker suspected of stealing tens of thousands of psychotherapy patient records was extradited to Finland on Saturday (February 25), after he was arrested in France. Twenty-five-year-old Julius Kivimaki was arrested in Paris on February 3, on the run from a European arrest warrant issued by the Finnish Police in October last year, the news agency AFP reported. Last week, French authorities had given the green light for Kivimaki's extradition.&nbsp;

Kivimaki's lawyer Peter Jaari told AFP that the hacker was now being held in Vantaa prison near Helsinki. Meanwhile, Marko Leponen of the National Bureau of Investigation, who is heading the probe said the aim was to interview Kivimaki as soon as possible.&nbsp;

The probe is related to the 2018 and 2019 hacking of the Finnish company Vastaamo, which manages dozens of psychotherapy centres across Finland. AFP reported that in the cyberattack, confidential treatment records of psychotherapy patients in Finland were stolen and some leaked online.&nbsp;

Many patients reported receiving emails with a demand for $236 (200 euros) in bitcoin to prevent the contents of their discussions with therapists from being made public. The Finnish police estimated that there were over 30,000 victims whose data was leaked.

After the leak was made public in October 2020, the government announced a crisis meeting over the unprecedented data breach, as distressed psychotherapy patients flooded mental health charities.

Julius Kivimaki has already been convicted of various counts of cybercrime, fraud, and money laundering. He was a member of a cybercriminal group called the Lizard Squad.&nbsp;

A serial hacker suspected of stealing tens of thousands of psychotherapy patient records was extradited to Finland on Saturday (February 25), after he was arrested in France. Twenty-five-year-old Julius Kivimaki was arrested in Paris on February 3, on the run from a European arrest warrant issued by the Finnish Police in October last year, the news agency AFP reported. Last week, French authorities had given the green light for Kivimaki's extradition. Kivimaki's lawyer Peter Jaari told AFP that the hacker was now being held in Vantaa prison near Helsinki. Meanwhile, Marko Leponen of the National Bureau of Investigation, who is heading the probe said the aim was to interview Kivimaki as soon as possible. The probe is related to the 2018 and 2019 hacking of the Finnish company Vastaamo, which manages dozens of psychotherapy centres across Finland. AFP reported that in the cyberattack, confidential treatment records of psychotherapy patients in Finland were stolen and some leaked online. Many patients reported receiving emails with a demand for $236 (200 euros) in bitcoin to prevent the contents of their discussions with therapists from being made public. The Finnish police estimated that there were over 30,000 victims whose data was leaked. After the leak was made public in October 2020, the government announced a crisis meeting over the unprecedented data breach, as distressed psychotherapy patients flooded mental health charities. Julius Kivimaki has already been convicted of various counts of cybercrime, fraud, and money laundering. He was a member of a cybercriminal group called the Lizard Squad. Google, which recently laid off thousands of employees globally, is now laying off the robots that cleaned cafeterias at its headquarters. A report by Wired recently said that Alphabet's "Everyday Robots"&nbsp;project — a unit under Google's experimental X laboratories — has been shut down by Google's chief executive officer (CEO) Sundar Pichai.

More than 100 wheeled one-armed robots that were trained by the project to clean cafeterias, separate trash and recycling and open doors, are being laid off. “Everyday Robots will no longer be a separate project within Alphabet,” Denise Gamboa, director of marketing and communications for the project, said, reported Wired.&nbsp;

Everyday Robots had emerged from the rubble of at least eight robotic acquisitions by Google 10 years back. A former employee said that from its earliest days, the project struggled with whether its mission was to pursue advanced research or deliver a product to market. More than 200 people were employed and robotics experts estimated that the robots likely cost thousands of dollars,&nbsp;which was expensive for Alphabet.&nbsp;

“It’s unfortunate to see it shut down,” the former employee said, adding robots could do meaningful work in a general way. "I don't think it’s a sign of a lack of progress. With the right focus, in five years you could have a meaningful product in the market."

For the last few years, Alphabet has been developing an integrated hardware and software system for learning, including the transfer of knowledge from the virtual to the actual world. The robots slowly gained a greater grasp of the world around them and became more adept at executing ordinary activities, using a combination of machine learning techniques like reinforcement learning, collaborative learning, and learning from demonstration.

With the robot division now shut down, some of its technology could be used for other divisions.
