Chinese hackers have been launching sophisticated cyberattacks to target business and government systems, Wall Street Journal reported. Through newer methods, they have been able to enter networks to spy on victims while remaining undetected.&nbsp;

The report said that the findings came from Google’s Mandiant division. The latest revelations say that hackers are targeting devices on the edge of networks, instead of trying to get behind a firewall. These devices are generally not protected by antivirus or endpoint detection software, the report stated.

Mandiant found that the attacks have been coming from China-based, state-sponsored hackers based on the malware code they use and the government and business victims they target. The report states that China has regularly denied conducting any such operations.

A blog post by Mandiant stated that hackers are targeting technologies that do not support endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions, including firewalls, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, hypervisors and virtual private network (VPN) technologies.

“Mandiant has investigated dozens of intrusions at Defense Industrial Base (DIB), government, technology and telecommunications organizations over the years where suspected China-nexus groups have exploited zero-day vulnerabilities and deployed custom malware to steal user credentials and maintain long-term access to the victim environments,” the company said in the blog post.

Three months back, &nbsp;Zurich CEO Mario Greco warned that cyberattacks could pose a much larger threat to insurers as compared to pandemics and climate change.

“What will become uninsurable is going to be cyber,” Greco told the Financial Times on December 26. “What if someone takes control of vital parts of our infrastructure, the consequences of that?”

China-sponsored hackers launching sophisticated cyberattacks: Report

Taking ahead its artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, Microsoft announced on Thursday that it will be incorporating a ChatGPT-style AI system into its widely used work software called Microsoft 365.

The system has been named Copilot by Microsoft, and the tech company said that they will embed it into Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Microsoft boss Satya Nadella stated that the step would "fundamentally change the way we work." The firm, however, accepted that sometimes Copilot can even make mistakes.

This latest chatbot from Microsoft, with its ChatGPT-like abilities, will make it easier to churn out calendar entries, meeting transcripts, or PowerPoint slides instantaneously in offices.

The idea behind incorporating a ChatGPT-style AI system is to make it work like an assistant for users of Microsoft's workplace software and take over their office tasks unilaterally.

"You could say we've been using AI on autopilot, and with this next generation of AI, we are moving from autopilot to copilot," said Nadella at a virtual release event.

Billions of dollars have been pumped into OpenAI by Microsoft, which has been building the technology that is being used to power ChatGPT as well as its latest version, GPT-4.

AI technology has already been used to create the chatbot on Microsoft's Bing search engine, which is getting more users.

Various tech giants have been cautiously approaching generative AI, fearing the embarrassment that comes when the technology performs incorrectly.

<h2>How voice assistants were left behind in the AI race</h2>

The essential difference comes from the kind of technologies that they are built upon. The ChatGPT is built over large language models, which are systems trained to recognise and generate text based on enormous data sets scraped off the web.&nbsp;

In contrast, Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant are built on command-and-control systems. They can understand a definite list of questions with spoken clarity and requests like "Will it rain in Delhi today?" or “Turn on the bedroom lights.” However, if a user asks the virtual assistant to do something that is not in its code, the virtual assistant simply says it cannot help.

Another reason that they fell behind the ongoing AI Chatbot wave of innovation is 'cumbersome design'.

According to John Burkey, a former Apple engineer who worked on Siri, several technological hurdles hit the innovation with which the Virtual Assistants were expected to evolve with.

Burkey was given the job to improve Siri in 2014. Siri’s database contains a huge list of words in nearly two dozen languages.

That made it "one big snowball," Burkey was quoted as saying by the New York Times. If someone wanted to add a word to Siri’s database, he added, "it goes in one big pile."

Therefore, seemingly simple updates, such as adding some new phrases to the data set, required rebuilding the entire database, which could take up to six weeks, Burkey added.&nbsp;

While many have viewed Alexa as a "glorified clock radio", disputing its scale of innovation with latest OpenAI creations such as ChatGPT, it still is the market leader in the Voice Assistant segment.&nbsp;

Eight years after its soft-launch in early 2014, calling out 'Alexa' now results in a robotic response in the homes of about 20 per cent of the US population, according to Amazon.

In what Google refers to as "conversational actions", the company said that by June 2023 it will end access for third-party conversational actions. Google expects a voice assistant revival from generative AI, which could help make its assistant much smarter than present.&nbsp;

Google reportedly told the New York Times that it was committed to providing a great virtual assistant to help people on their phones and inside their homes and cars. The company is also separately testing a chatbot called Bard.

For Siri

Apple has successfully used Siri to push people to buy iPhones, reports suggest. The company has invested in creating an ecosystem for people to utilise Siri for using its App Store. The company recently held an annual AI summit at its headquarters last month. Members of the Siri team have reportedly been testing language-generating concepts every week.&nbsp;

The ethics and society team within the artificial intelligence organisation looked after ensuring whether or not AI principles were being implemented during product design.&nbsp;

Microsoft has doubled down on the implementation of AI innovation. The tech company also invested billions into its partnership with OpenAI, which is an American AI research and deployment company.&nbsp;

Microsoft has even teased a Thursday event about how it is "reinventing productivity with AI," which is expected to showcase its competing Word processor.&nbsp;

The ethics and society team appeared to be a vital cog as the company is aiming to make controversial AI tools available to the mainstream. But concerns were raised when reports emerged that the entire ethics team was sacked.&nbsp;

However, Microsoft still maintains an active Office of Responsible AI, which is tasked with creating rules and principles to govern the company’s AI initiatives. Microsoft states: "We are committed to making sure AI systems are developed responsibly and in ways that warrant people's trust".&nbsp;

As quoted by Platformer, the company said in a statement: "Microsoft is committed to developing AI products and experiences safely and responsibly, and does so by investing in people, processes, and partnerships that prioritise this."&nbsp;

In the video shared by the company online, it stated that GPT-4 is armed with various capabilities which were not present in the previous iteration of the technology, like the ability to “reason” based on images which have been uploaded by the users.

AI helps create non-English speaking phishing emails

The Indian government is working on a draft proposal that could force smartphone makers to remove apps which come pre-installed on new phones that cannot be deleted.

Moreover, the government is also considering imposing mandatory screening of every major operating system update before it is made available to consumers, Reuters reported citing a government document.

The new rules, once implemented, could lead to massive losses in business from pre-installed apps for major firms like Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Apple, and could delay the launch of smartphones in the country.

The move comes as the Information and Technology (IT) ministry has raised security concerns over spying and abuse of Indian users’ data, Reuters reported citing a government official.

"Pre-installed apps can be a weak security point and we want to ensure no foreign nations, including China, are exploiting it. It's a matter of national security," the official was quoted as saying.

The confidential meeting was attended by representatives from Xiaomi, Samsung, Apple and Vivo, as per the meeting record.

The smartphone makers have been given one-year time to adhere to the rules once it comes into effect. As of now, no date has been fixed as to when it will be implemented, the document stated.

Till February, more than 600 online vendors were reportedly selling ChatGPT logins&nbsp;for prices ranging from 1-30 RMB ($0.17-$4.28). Over the months, demand has shot through the roof with some stores making thousands of sales.

However, the burgeoning popularity of ChatGPTs has also spawned many copycats. Tencent’s WeChat, for instance, reportedly has emerged the sole platform where knockoffs of the AI bot are being downloaded.

These apps are basically sub-applications on the platform like “ChatGPT Online” which offer users a handful of free questions before charging for time using a chatbot.

These intermediaries ask ChatGPT questions for users and then send the answers back.

However, many Chinese tech companies have clamped down on black market logins. According to the report, Taobao has banned keywords like OpenAI and ChatGPT whereas WeChat also restricts similar services.

Even though OpenAI hasn’t announced anything about launching ChatGPT in China, many big Chinese tech companies are trying to launch their own ChatGPT-like product.

The launch of the world's first 3D-printed rocket had to be cancelled at the last minute again. The launch which was scheduled for Saturday was aborted after it encountered an "automation issue". At 110 feet tall and 7.5 feet wide, the 9,280 kg Terran 1 rocket is the world's largest 3D-printed object to attempt an orbital flight. As per an AFP report, the engine of the unmanned Terran 1 had begun igniting, when the rocket faced the issue which ultimately led to its takeoff being aborted for the second time in less than a week.

Space Relativity, the start-up behind the 3D-printed rocket, also made a second attempt to launch the rocket but had to abort due to pressure issues in the rocket's second stage.

"The team went HARD today and we intend to do so during our next attempt. More to come on the new launch date," said the company in a tweet.

An earlier launch scheduled for last Wednesday (March 8th) was postponed over last-minute propellant temperature issues.

'The future of radio', as it is being called, will be rolled out in Cleveland city of the United States next month. An Ohio-based media company Futuri has launched RadioGPT, which is being touted as&nbsp;the world's first-ever radio platform powered by artificial intelligence.&nbsp;

<h2>RadioGPT: How will it work?</h2>

RadioGPT will use Futuri's TopicPulse technology to search &nbsp;online news sources and social media to identify topics and trends in local markets. The platform will then create scripts for radio broadcasts, delivered on air by Artificial Intelligence-generated personalities with the same GPT-3 technology implemented by ChatGPT.

Other than this, the company claims that its technology can automate other processes such as creating website blogs, social media posts, short-form videos and also convert on-air content into podcasts.

Meta’s gender pay gap: Women paid 15.7% less than men in 2022, says report

The head of Meta’s WhatsApp messaging service has entered a row over the platform's end-to-end encryption with the UK government. The company has said it would rather be blocked in the UK than undermine its encrypted-messaging system. The head of the platform, Will Cathcart, has refused to tamper with the privacy of encrypted messages under the Online Safety Bill.

End-to-end encryption ensures that the messages aren't visible even to the company running the service. Under the Online Safety Bill, private encrypted-messaging apps and other services will need to adopt "accredited technology" to identify and remove child-abuse material. Cathcart says this will undermine the privacy of Whatsapp for everyone in the UK.&nbsp;

"Our users all around the world want security - 98% of our users are outside the UK, they do not want us to lower the security of the product," he said, adding that they would rather be blocked than give in.

"We've recently been blocked in Iran, for example. We've never seen a liberal democracy do that," he added.

Earlier, the app Signal also stood up against the bill saying they could stop providing services in the UK if they were required to scan messages.

Signal president Meredith Whittaker had told BBC that it "would absolutely, 100% walk". She added that she was looking forward to working with Cathcart and others to push back the bill in the UK if asked to weaken the privacy of its encrypted messaging system.

&nbsp;"We won't lower the security of WhatsApp. We have never done that - and we have accepted being blocked in other parts of the world," Cathcart told BBC.

Under the Online Safety Bill, private encrypted-messaging apps and other services will need to adopt "accredited technology" to identify and remove child-abuse material. Cathcart says this will undermine the privacy of Whatsapp for everyone in the UK. "Our users all around the world want security - 98% of our users are outside the UK, they do not want us to lower the security of the product," he said, adding that they would rather be blocked than give in. "We've recently been blocked in Iran, for example. We've never seen a liberal democracy do that," he added. Earlier, the app Signal also stood up against the bill saying they could stop providing services in the UK if they were required to scan messages. Signal president Meredith Whittaker had told BBC that it "would absolutely, 100% walk". The agency said it has started the investigation under which it will assess the frequency, scope and manufacturing procedures associated with the issue. "I would like to apologise to Halli for my misunderstanding of his situation. It was based on things I was told that were untrue or, in some cases, true, but not meaningful."

"He is considering remaining at Twitter," he added.

After being fired, Halli told BBC that HR remained unresponsive to his queries about whether he was fired or not, following which he had to take up with Musk on Twitter.

"My theory is they made a mistake and are now looking for anything they can find to make this a "for cause" firing to avoid having to fulfil their contractual obligations," he said.

Twitter services were hit by a technical snag for less than an hour&nbsp;on Monday as thousands of users reported facing difficulty in accessing links from the social media platform to the websites.

According to Internet observatory NetBlocks, the problem was affecting video content and image too. As per Downdetector, more than 8,000 people had reported facing similar issues on Elon Musk's microblogging platform in the United States.

According to the complaints made by the users, on clicking the links a message popped up which read, "Your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint, please see https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs/twitter-api for more information".

Twitter's specialised service for following tweets, Tweetdeck, also appeared to be broken because of the same technical snag. According to the users, the links remained broken and the app went entirely blank.

Internet observatory NetBlocks Director Alp Toker said, "Error messages supplied by Twitter's link-sharing platform and internal API point to problems with the platform's microservices, which are having a knock-on effect on other aspects of the service.”

"This suggests Twitter has not been effectively testing its updates before pushing them to the public,” he added.

Meanwhile, reacting to the broken links, Twitter said, "We made an internal change that had some unintended consequences. We're working on this now and will share an update when it's fixed.”

Owner Musk tweeted, "This platform is so brittle (sigh). Will be fixed shortly."

A skilled artist would have needed a year to write the more than 100-page comic, but the author, who goes by the pen name Rootport, finished it in just six weeks.
