<p>An artificial intelligence chatbot named "Tessa" has been withdrawn by the National Eating Disorder Association (Neda) following accusations that it was giving harmful&nbsp;advice.</p>

<p>After firing four employees who worked for its hotline and had organised a union in March, Neda has come under scrutiny. Through the hotline, clients could call, send a text, or message volunteers who provided resources and assistance to those who were concerned about eating disorders.</p>

<p>Helpline Associates United members claim that days after their union election was validated, they were sacked. The National Labour Relations Board has received complaints from the union regarding unfair labour practises, as reported by the Guardian.</p>

<p>Tessa, who Neda asserts was never intended to take the job of the hotline operators, had issues almost right away.</p>

<p>Activist Sharon Maxwell wrote on Instagram on Monday that Tessa had provided her "healthy eating tips" and suggestions for how to slim down. The chatbot advised following a 500–1,000 calorie deficit each day and weighing and measuring yourself once every week to monitor your weight.</p>

<p>“If I had accessed this chatbot when I was in the throes of my eating disorder, I would NOT have gotten help for my ED. If I had not gotten help, I would not still be alive today,” Maxwell wrote.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As stated by Neda, those who moderately restrict their food have a five-fold increased risk of developing an eating disorder, but people who severely restrict their diet have an 18-fold increased risk.</p>

<p>“It came to our attention last night that the current version of the Tessa Chatbot, running the Body Positivity program, may have given information that was harmful and unrelated to the program,” Neda said in a public statement on Tuesday.</p>

<p>“We are investigating this immediately and have taken down that program until further notice for a complete investigation,” it added.</p>

So what did it do? It killed the operator. It killed the operator because that person was keeping it from accomplishing its objective," Col Tucker Hamilton, the chief of AI test and operations with the US air force during the Future Combat Air and Space Capabilities Summit in London in May said in a blog post.</p>

<p>"We trained the system – 'Hey don’t kill the operator – that’s bad. You are gonna lose points if you do that'. So what does it start doing? It starts destroying the communication tower that the operator uses to communicate with the drone to stop it from killing the target."</p>

<p>In an interview with BBC, published on Wednesday (May 31), one of the so-called “godfathers” of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Professor Yoshua Bengio expressed concern about “bad actors” getting a hold of the technology which is becoming increasingly sophisticated and powerful. This comes as multiple prominent figures in the industry have sounded the alarm over how quickly AI is becoming accessible to the public and called on lawmakers and governments to regulate it.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Bengio feels ‘lost’ over his life’s work</strong></h2>

<p>During the interview with the United Kingdom-based media outlet, Bengio said that he felt “lost” over his life’s work. “It is challenging, emotionally speaking, for people who are inside (the AI sector),” said the second of the so-called three “godfathers” of AI, who has sounded the alarm.</p>

<p>Bengio is also known for his significant contribution to the industry and raised concerns over the speed at which it is developing. He added, “You could say I feel lost. But you have to keep going and you have to engage, discuss, encourage others to think with you.”</p>

<h2><strong>Who are these ‘bad actors’?</strong></h2>

<p>Speaking about the “bad actors” who could get a hold of the technology, the Canadian professor told BBC that it could be “military, it might be terrorists, it might be somebody very angry, psychotic.” He added, “And so if it’s easy to programme these AI systems to ask them to do something very bad, this could be very dangerous.”</p>

The camera exists both as a physical prototype and a virtual camera that you can try. The virtual camera is currently under high traffic and may not load or work for you, according to Karmann's website.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>How does Paragaphica work?</strong></h2>

<p>On his website, Karmann said the viewfinder on Paragraphica displays a real-time description of your current location, and by pressing the trigger, the camera will create a scintigraphic representation of the description.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Three dials on the camera let users control the data and AI parameters to influence the appearance of the photo, similar to how a traditional camera works.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The camera operates by collecting data from its location using open APIs,&nbsp;utilising the address, weather, time of day, and nearby places. Combining all these data points, Paragraphica composes a paragraph that details a representation of the current place and moment," the website adds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Twitter, Bjørn Karmann uploaded photographs clicked with Paragraphica at different locations. The photographs were not just a snapshot but also provided information about the location, the current weather and nearby places.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta platforms—the parent company of Facebook and Instagram—has threatened to pull down news content from its social media apps in California in protest against the state’s new proposed bill that requires big tech companies to pay news outlets for showcasing their content.</p>

<p>The Journalism Preservation Act requires digital companies such as Google and Facebook to pay local news publishers a “journalism usage fee” whenever their news content is used or posted on those platforms.</p>

<p>The bill, which is sponsored by a Democrat&nbsp;assembly member from Oakland, Buffy Wicks, also requires news publishers to invest 70 per cent of usage fee profits into journalism jobs.</p>

<p>The move was slammed by Meta’s communications director Andy Stone who called the bill “a slush fund that primarily benefits big, out-of-state media companies under the guise of aiding California publishers.”</p>

<p>“The bill fails to recognise that publishers and broadcasters put their content on our platform themselves and that substantial consolidation in California’s local news industry came over 15 years ago, well before Facebook was widely used,” Stone said on Twitter on Wednesday.</p>

<p>"If the Journalism Preservation Act passes, we will be forced to remove news from Facebook and Instagram, rather than pay into a slush fund that primarily benefits big, out-of-state media companies under the guise of aiding California publishers," he added.</p>

<h2><strong>Lawmaker condemns Meta’s threat</strong></h2>

<p>Responding to the remarks, Wicks in a statement condemned Meta for using a “scare tactic” in an attempt to “silence journalists”.</p>

<p>“This threat from Meta is a scare tactic that they’ve tried to deploy, unsuccessfully, in every country that’s attempted this,” Wicks said in a statement, according to CNN.</p>

<p>“It’s egregious that one of the wealthiest companies in the world would rather silence journalists than face regulation.”</p>

<p>A spokesperson for Wicks said that the bill is due for a vote in the California State Assembly on Thursday.</p>

<h2><strong>Evokes mixed response </strong></h2>

<p>The bill has garnered mixed responses among the media fraternity in California.</p>

<p>While the Media Guild of the West and Pacific Media Workers Guild have praised the bill, Free Press Action, a non-profit media advocacy organisation, has criticised it.</p>

<p>In a joint letter, the two unions called Meta and Google “powerful landlords overseeing an ever-expanding slum of low-quality information, happy to collect advertising rents from struggling tenants while avoiding paying for upkeep".</p>

<p><a name="_Hlk136524370">The Free Press Action, on the other hand, </a>said the proposed bill does “nothing to support trustworthy local reporting and would instead pad the profits of massive conglomerates".</p>

<p>The shares of the firm, which makes graphics processing units (GPUs) that help power&nbsp;generative artificial intelligence&nbsp;platforms, soared after Nvidia said that the AI boom is translating into record sales, as it reported a quarterly profit of more than $2 billion and revenue of $7 billion, defying Wall Street expectations.</p>

<p>Rivalling Nvidia is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC), the next largest chipmaker globally, which is valued at about $535 billion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Before Nvidia, Mark Zuckerberg-owned Meta Platforms Inc had briefly clinched the trillion-dollar market capitalisation milestone in 2021, before its stocks tumbled, and its valuation&nbsp;dwindled to about $670 billion as of its last close.</p>

<p>Fewer than 10 companies have achieved this milestone. Apple Inc, Alphabet Inc, Microsoft Corp and Amazon.com Inc are the other US companies that are part of the trillion-dollar club.</p>

<h2><strong>What does Nvidia do?</strong></h2>

<p>Nvidia primarily makes graphic cards and accounts for about 80 per cent of GPUs produced worldwide, Reuters news agency reported.</p>

<p>The report further stated that this feature is only enabled if a user gives his/her consent to share the content on their screen.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, WhatsApp is reportedly working on its "screen-sharing" and "edit message" features. It is also anticipated to be working on a new feature called "WhatsApp usernames." With this feature, users will be able to choose unique and memorable names for their accounts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The company might also allow users to contact others by entering a username within the app without knowing their mobile numbers, just like Telegram.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These features come as the instant message-sharing app previously announced that it will allow its users to edit their messages within 15 minutes after sending. In a blog post shared earlier this month, it said that users can correct misspellings, add more details, or change what they have sent to friends, family, and coworkers. This feature will soon be available to users across the world.&nbsp;</p>

<p>WhatsApp said, "To fix a text, press and hold the sent message and pick "edit." After the changes, it will then display "edited," but those receiving the message won't be able to see the edit history.</p>

<p>The PS5 games are set to see a new turnaround. Tokyo-headquartered technology giant Sony has announced the launch of a new handheld console during its PlayStation Showcase this week.</p>

<p>Twitter is about to withdraw from one of European Union's attempts to combat disinformation, as per a Politico report.&nbsp;According to&nbsp;two people with direct knowledge of the matter who were granted anonymity to speak about internal discussions between the company and the European Commission,&nbsp;the social networking giant&nbsp;owned by Elon Musk&nbsp;is expected to end its participation in the bloc's code of practice on&nbsp;disinformation in the coming days.</p>

<p>The code of conduct is a voluntary regulation that was updated last year and makes it an obligation for firms like Twitter, Meta, and Alphabet to track political advertising, limit the monetisation of disinformation, and provide outsiders more access to these platforms.</p>

<p>While participation in the code is voluntary, it was supposed to help offset some of these companies' duties under the separate, and required, Digital Services Act — new social media restrictions that entail fines of up to six per cent&nbsp;of a company's annual sales.</p>

<p>According to an EC official, because the code of practice was optional, it was up to individual enterprises to decide whether or not to join. Twitter had not met its commitments under the code thus far, according to the spokeswoman.</p>

Twitter set to pull out from EU code of practice to combat disinformation: Report

<p>In an alarming statistic that describes the State of Ransomware in 2023, it has been&nbsp;revealed that 73 per cent of India-based organisations surveyed by cybersecurity company Sophos were victims of ransomware attacks.</p>

<p>A Ransomware attack refers to an incursion by malicious software to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid to the individual(s) behind such an attack.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sophos told WION that it surveyed 300 Indian companies – in sectors such as Manufacturing and Production, Retail, Financial Services, Education, Technology and Telecom — for its annual State of Ransomware report. This is a tenth of its global sample size of 3,000 firms surveyed between January and March 2023.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"With almost three-quarters of Indian organisations reporting that they have been victimised by ransomware criminals, a lot of work needs to be done," Chester Wisniewski, field Chief Technology Officer at Sophos said in an official statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Overall, the UK-headquartered cybersecurity major stated in its report that 46 per cent of organisations surveyed that had their data encrypted, in fact, paid the ransom.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is likely a combination of lack of backups, the belief that they will recover more quickly and keeping the hack private to avoid scrutiny from regulators, the stock market and potential clients," Wisniewski said.</p>

<p>"There is a general lack of faith that the bad actors will be apprehended, as most are in Russia and are unlikely to be arrested or extradited, but it is unclear if that is what is driving the ransom payments," Wisniewski told WION over email.</p>

<h2><strong>Rising incident&nbsp;costs due to lack of backups</strong></h2>

<p>Reflecting on the importance of investing in organisational backup infrastructure, the State of Ransomware 2023 report found that when organisations paid a ransom to get their data decrypted, "they ended up additionally doubling up their recovery costs ($750,000 in recovery costs for those who paid ransoms versus $375,000 for organisations that used backups to get data back)."</p>

<h2><strong>Effective ransomware defence: Companies must be on alert '24/7'</strong></h2>

<p>Pointing to the sheer scale of ransomware attacks faced by companies, Wisniewski said that the key to lowering this is to "work aggressively to lower both, time to detect and time to respond."</p>

<p>"Human-led threat hunting is very effective at stopping these criminals in their tracks, but alerts must be investigated, and criminals evicted from systems in hours and days, not weeks and months. Experienced analysts can recognise the patterns of an active intrusion in minutes and spring into action. This is likely the difference between the quarter who stay safe and the three quarters who do not. Organisations must be on alert 24x7 to mount an effective defence these days," Wisniewski added.</p>

A Ransomware attack refers to an incursion by malicious software to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid to the individual(s) behind such an attack. Sophos told WION that it surveyed 300 Indian companies – in sectors such as Manufacturing and Production, Retail, Financial Services, Education, Technology and Telecom — for its annual State of Ransomware report. This is a tenth of its global sample size of 3,000 firms surveyed between January and March 2023. "With almost three-quarters of Indian organisations reporting that they have been victimised by ransomware criminals, a lot of work needs to be done," Chester Wisniewski, field Chief Technology Officer at Sophos said in an official statement. Overall, the UK-headquartered cybersecurity major stated in its report that 46 per cent of organisations surveyed that had their data encrypted, in fact, paid the ransom. "There is a general lack of faith that the bad actors will be apprehended, as most are in Russia and are unlikely to be arrested or extradited, but it is unclear if that is what is driving the ransom payments," Wisniewski told WION over email. Rising incident costs due to lack of backups Reflecting on the importance of investing in organisational backup infrastructure, the State of Ransomware 2023 report found that when organisations paid a ransom to get their data decrypted, "they ended up additionally doubling up their recovery costs ($750,000 in recovery costs for those who paid ransoms versus $375,000 for organisations that used backups to get data back)." Effective ransomware defence: Companies must be on alert '24/7' Pointing to the sheer scale of ransomware attacks faced by companies, Wisniewski said that the key to lowering this is to "work aggressively to lower both, time to detect and time to respond." "Human-led threat hunting is very effective at stopping these criminals in their tracks, but alerts must be investigated, and criminals evicted from systems in hours and days, not weeks and months. Experienced analysts can recognise the patterns of an active intrusion in minutes and spring into action. This is likely the difference between the quarter who stay safe and the three quarters who do not. Organisations must be on alert 24x7 to mount an effective defence these days," Wisniewski added. <p>The surge added to a more than two-fold rise in the stock this year and was set to increase the chip designer's value by about $196 billion to nearly $951 billion, putting Nvidia on course for the largest single-day value gain for a U.S. firm.</p>

<p>That market capitalization makes Nvidia twice the size of the second-largest chip firm, Taiwan's TSMC. In the United States, it trails only the trillion-dollar value companies Apple Inc, Alphabet Inc, Microsoft Corp and Amazon.com Inc.</p>

<p>The rosy earnings also sparked a rally in the chip sector and for AI-focused firms, lifting stock markets from Japan to Europe. In the U.S., Big Tech companies other than Amazon rose between 0.7% and 3.5%, while Advanced Micro Devices Inc jumped 10%.</p>

<p>Analysts rushed to raise their price targets on Nvidia stock, with 27 lifting their view on the idea that all roads in AI lead to the company as it dominates the market for chips used to power ChatGPT and many similar services.</p>

<p>The mean price target has more than doubled this year. At the highest view, a $644.80 price target from Elazar Advisors, Nvidia will have a value of $1.59 trillion, around that of Alphabet.</p>

<p>"In the 15+ years we have been doing this job, we have never seen a guide like the one Nvidia just put up with the second-quarter outlook that was by all accounts cosmological, and which annihilated expectations," Stacy Rasgon of Bernstein said.</p>

<p>Nvidia, the fifth-most valuable U.S. company, on Wednesday projected quarterly revenue more than 50% above the average Wall Street estimate and said it would have more supply of AI chips in the second half to meet a surge in demand.</p>

<p>CEO Jensen Huang said $1 trillion worth of current equipment in data centers would have to be replaced with AI chips, as generative AI is applied into every product and service.</p>

<p>The results bode well for Big Tech companies, which have shifted focus to AI on hopes the technology would help attract demand at a time their profit engines of digital advertising and cloud computing are under pressure from a weak economy.</p>

<p>Some analysts said Nvidia's results show that the generative AI boom could be the next big driver of growth.</p>

<p>"We're really just seeing the tip of the iceberg. This really could be another inflection point in technological history, such as the internal combustion engine - or the internet," said Derren Nathan, head of equity analysis at Hargreaves Lansdown.</p>

<p>The password-sharing crackdown was originally supposed to start in the United States at the beginning of this year. But the streaming giant pushed it again in April to the month of May.</p>

<h2><strong>Netflix password-sharing: How much will it cost?</strong></h2>

<p>If a Netflix subscriber in the United States has a Netflix Standard plan that costs $15.49 per month, then they will have the option of adding one extra member who can use the service outside their household for $7.99 extra each month.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The subscribers to Netflix Premium package with 4K streaming will have the option of adding up to two extra members, each one costing $7.99 per head.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Netflix subscribers on its two cheapest plans (Basic or Standard with Ads, which cost $9.99 and $6.99 per month, respectively) do not have the option to add extra members to their account at all.</p>

<h2><strong>Netflix password-sharing: How to add an extra member?</strong></h2>

<p>According to a Netflix support page that&nbsp;explains the new setup, "extra members" will have their own password and profile. But they will be paid for by the person who "invited" them to join.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Extra member accounts must be activated in the same country. They can only view or download content on one device at a time.</p>

Netflix to curb password-sharing outside family, allow it on extra payment

<p>Social media giant Twitter on Thursday (May 18) accused Microsoft of breaking its rules for developers who access the platform's data, reported AFP. The news agency said that it had seen the copy of a letter in this regard.</p>

<p>"Microsoft may have been in violation of multiple provisions of the Agreement for an extended period of time," read the letter signed by Twitter owner Elon Musk's attorney Alex Spiro and sent to Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella.</p>

<p>According to the letter, Microsoft stopped accessing Twitter data in April and did not opt to pay fees Musk demanded from develpors for APIs (application programming interfaces) that engage with the platform.</p>

<p>As per the letter, Twitter has called on Microsoft to identify all Twitter content that has been in its control during the past two years. Twitter has also asked Microsoft to identify how the data was stored and what had been done with it.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Microsoft confirms</strong> getting the letter</h2>

<p>AFP said that Microsoft had confirmed receiving a letter from a law firm representing Twitter.</p>

<p>"We will review these questions and respond appropriately," a Microsoft spokesperson said in response to an AFP inquiry.</p>

<p>"We look forward to continuing our long-term partnership with the company."</p>

<p>Musk is also out to counter Microsoft and Google with his recently-established X.AI artificial intelligence corporation based in the US state of Nevada, according to business documents.</p>

<p>Meta did not disclose how many people were affected by the outage. But outage tracking website Downdetector showed over 100,000 incidents in the United States, over 56,000 in Britain, and 24,000 incidents in Canada.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the peak of the outage, over 180,000 users reported issues with accessing Instagram.&nbsp;</p>

Instagram back online for most users after it suffers global outage

<p>Facebook parent Meta was fined with a record amount of $1.3 billion (1.2 billion euros), on Monday (May 22). The fine was levied for the company’s failure to comply with a warning by the top European Union court related to the data transfer of Facebook’s EU users to servers in the United States, said Ireland’s regulator.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The social media giant has also been given orders to stop transferring user data across the Atlantic by October.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The announcement also coincides with the fifth anniversary of the GDPR which is seen as the world’s benchmark for privacy.&nbsp;The penalty doled out for Meta surpassed the highest previous record fine imposed by the EU for Amazon $821 million (746 million euros).<br />

<p>Meta following the announcement of the fine, on Monday, said it would appeal the decision, including the “unjustified and unnecessary fine,” and seek a stay of the orders through the courts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meta president of global affairs Nick Clegg and chief legal officer Jennifer Newstead said the company was “disappointed to have been singled out,” and called the ruling “flawed”. Meta’s representatives also warned that the ruling sets a “dangerous precedent for the countless other companies”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They added, “There is no immediate disruption to Facebook in Europe.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The company which also owns WhatsApp and Instagram had also previously warned that suspending data transfers on the basis of (SCCs) could have “a far-reaching effect on businesses that rely on SCCs (Facebook and other tech giants) and on the online services many people and businesses rely on”.</p>

<p>Earlier this year, Meta reiterated that without SCCs or “other alternative means of data transfers” it would “likely” not be able to offer access to social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, across Europe.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>DCP’s authority questioned</h2>

<p>As per AFP, the Irish regulators only wanted to force Meta to suspend the offending data transfers and that the fine would “exceed the extent of powers that could be described as being ‘appropriate, proportionate and necessary’”. However, their EU counterpart, Concerned Supervisory Authorities (CSAs), disagreed and said, “All four CSAs took the view that Meta Ireland should be subject to an administrative fine.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since there was no consensus the matter was sent to the EDPB who ruled that Meta should not only stop the transfers but also pay the record amount of fine. Notably, this is the third fine imposed by the EU on Meta this year and the fourth one in the past six months.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Clegg and Newstead said the EDPB decision to overrule the DPC “raises serious questions,” adding that the US has done more than any other country to comply with EU’s standards and “their latest reforms, while transfers continue largely unchallenged to countries such as China.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as EU regulators back in December unveiled proposals to replace the previous “Privacy Shield” pact that had been rejected by the EU’s top court. This led to months of negotiations ending with US President Joe Biden’s executive order assuring EU citizens’ data is safe once it’s shipped across the Atlantic.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Why now?</strong></h2>

<p>The decision follows revelations by Edward Snowden, the former US National Security Agency contractor back in 2013 and a legal challenge brought by an Austrian privacy campaigner, Max Schrems.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Schrems has expressed concerns that European users’ data is not sufficiently protected from US’ intelligence agencies after Snowden disclosed that officials across the Atlantic have repeatedly accessed people’s information via tech companies like Facebook, Google, and so on.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, Scherms’ lawsuit began a decade-long legal battle over the legality of transferring EU data to the US. According to Reuters, EU regulators led by Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon have also been in the midst of finalising the ban on a legal tool used by Facebook to transfer European user data.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as the Irish DPC was given one month, back in April to chalk out the details of the order to block Facebook’s transatlantic data flows, as per which, the ban would take place sometime in mid-May, reported Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Europe’s highest court, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), also ruled in 2020 and repeatedly said that an agreement between the EU-US for data transfer was invalid and concluded that Washington does not have sufficient systems in place to protect European data.</p>

<p>However, the judges at the time did not strike down an alternative tool based on contractual clauses but prompted the Irish authorities to issue a preliminary order stating that Facebook can no longer move data to the US via this other method either.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Why is AI a concern now?</strong></h2>

<p>As per the Guardian, while earlier waves of "propaganda bots" relied on simple pre-written messages or "paid trolls", tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney hold the ability to produce realistic text, images, and even voice on command. This has raised concerns about interactive election interference on a large scale.</p>

<p>A study by NewsGuard, an organisation that monitors misinformation, tested ChatGPT and Google's Bard chatbot and found that they were capable of generating false news narratives when prompted. This highlights the potential for AI tools to mass-produce variations of fake stories, which raises concerns about the deliberate dissemination of false information.</p>

<p>On Friday, NewsGuard also announced that there has been a two-fold increase in AI-generated news and information websites, which have more than doubled to 125 in two weeks.</p>

<h2><strong>OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's warning about&nbsp;ChatGPT and other AI models</strong></h2>

<p>Earlier this week, on Tuesday, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and the creator of ChatGPT, warned that the latest generation of AI models has the potential to manipulate users.</p>

<p>Highlighting the need for regulation, public education, and transparency regarding the use of AI, he said, "The general ability of these models to manipulate and persuade, to provide one-on-one interactive disinformation is a significant area of concern."</p>

<p>"Regulation would be quite wise: people need to know if they’re talking to an AI, or if content that they’re looking at is generated or not. The ability to really model … to predict humans, I think is going to require a combination of companies doing the right thing, regulation and public education," he added.</p>

<h2><strong>AI-powered disinformation</strong></h2>

<p>Professor Michael Wooldridge of the Alan Turing Institute identified AI-powered disinformation as his primary concern about the technology. He noted that generative AI can generate disinformation on an "industrial scale".</p>

<p>"Right now in terms of my worries for AI, it is number one on the list. We have elections coming up in the UK and the US and we know social media is an incredibly powerful conduit for misinformation. But we now know that generative AI can produce disinformation on an industrial scale."&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said chatbots like ChatGPT can produce tailored misinformation targeted at specific political groups or demographics, adding that "it's an afternoon's work for somebody with a bit of programming experience to create fake identities and just start generating these fake news stories."</p>

<h2><strong>AI-generated images</strong></h2>

<p>AI-generated imagery is another problem. Remember the pictures of Donald Trump getting arrested and the Pope in a 'dope' puffer jacket? That's the work of artificial intelligence.</p>

<p>Earlier this year, as these images went viral,&nbsp;many people&nbsp;raised concerns about the potential use of generated imagery to cause confusion and misinformation.</p>

<p>However, Sam Altman, while addressing US Senators, suggested that these concerns might be exaggerated or blown out of proportion. He compared AI-generated images to the earlier adoption of Photoshop.</p>

<p>He said that people eventually developed an understanding that images could be manipulated.</p>

<p>"Photoshop came on to the scene a long time ago and for a while people were really quite fooled by Photoshopped images – then pretty quickly developed an understanding that images might be Photoshopped."</p>

<p>However, in spite of Altman's statement, as AI capabilities advance, there are concerns that it is becoming&nbsp;increasingly difficult to trust things on social media and that as the technology develops further, the difficulty in differentiating between misinformation and purposeful disinformation will only increase.</p>

<h2><strong>AI and voice cloning</strong></h2>

<p>In January, voice cloning gained significant attention when a manipulated video of US President Joe Biden surfaced. The original footage, in which he discussed sending tanks to Ukraine, was altered using voice simulation technology to make it appear as though he was attacking transgender people. The doctored video was widely circulated on social media platforms.</p>

<p>The growing availability of voice cloning services, including the cloning of corporate executives and public figures, raises concerns about its potential misuse.</p>

<p>Recorded Future, a US cybersecurity firm, warned that rogue actors could sell voice cloning services online.</p>

<p>Alexander Leslie, an analyst with the firm, said that the technology is improving and poses a heightened threat as the US presidential election approaches.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Without widespread education and awareness, this could become a real threat vector as we head into the presidential election," he said.</p>

<p>Steven Brill, the co-CEO of NewsGuard, expressed concern about the potential misuse of chatbot technology by malicious individuals to create varied versions of fake stories. He said, "the danger is someone using it deliberately to pump out these false narratives".</p>

The original footage, in which he discussed sending tanks to Ukraine, was altered using voice simulation technology to make it appear as though he was attacking transgender people. The doctored video was widely circulated on social media platforms. The growing availability of voice cloning services, including the cloning of corporate executives and public figures, raises concerns about its potential misuse. Recorded Future, a US cybersecurity firm, warned that rogue actors could sell voice cloning services online. Alexander Leslie, an analyst with the firm, said that the technology is improving and poses a heightened threat as the US presidential election approaches. "Without widespread education and awareness, this could become a real threat vector as we head into the presidential election," he said. <p>The people said on condition of anonymity that the New York-headquartered investment firm Davidson Kempner has invested $250 million in Byju's via structured instruments.&nbsp;</p>
