US regulator asks court to block Microsoft’s $69bn deal to acquire video game giant Activision Blizzard

<p>On Monday, several Indian media reported that India’s COVID-19 vaccine booking portal, CoWIN, was compromised, and sensitive personal information of thousands of users was leaked on the Telegram social messaging app.</p>

<p>It was claimed that a Telegram bot was revealing sensitive data of the users when inquired about an individual’s phone number. The bot leaked the name, Aadhaar number, PAN number, passport number, date of birth, location, gender, and the institute from where they got vaccinated.</p>

<p>Notably, a user had to save some of these details while registering for the CoWIN app.</p>

<p>Millions of Indian users had signed up on CoWIN portal, launched on January 16, 2021, and have used it to book vaccination slots. The data includes more than 40 million children aged between 12-14 and over 37 million people over the age of 45, a significant part of which could be senior citizens.</p>

<p>Now, it is no longer possible to access this bot.</p>

<h2><strong>Indian government’s response</strong></h2>

<p>There were two, slightly different, reactions from the government.</p>

<p>The first one was issued by the Indian health ministry which outrightly rejected claims of data leak saying that "all such reports are without any basis and mischievous in nature".</p>

<p>In a press release, the health ministry said that there are three ways in which data on CoWIN can be accessed.</p>

<p>First, a user can access their data on the portal through a one-time password (OTP) sent to their mobile number.</p>

<p>&nbsp;Two, a vaccinator can access the data of a person, and the CoWIN system tracks and records each time an “authorised” user accesses the system.</p>

<p>&nbsp;And lastly, third-party applications that have been provided authorised access of CoWIN APIs can access personal level data of vaccinated people after OTP authentication.</p>

<p>The government claimed that without an OTP, data cannot be shared with the Telegram bot.</p>

<p>The ministry further pointed out that CoWIN only collects their year of birth while there is no provision to save a person’s address on the platform.</p>

<p>“Security Measures are in place on the Co-WIN portal, with Web Application Firewall, Anti-DDoS, SSL/TLS, regular vulnerability assessment, Identity &amp; Access Management, etc,” it said in a statement.</p>

<p>The health ministry further said that it has roped in the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In)—the Indian nodal government agency that looks after cyber security—to look into this issue and submit a report. In addition, an internal exercise has been initiated to review the existing security measures of CoWIN.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, minutes later the Minister of Electronics and Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, released a statement via Twitter that an initial investigation had already indicated that there had been a previous instance of CoWin data leak.</p>

<p>&nbsp;"A Telegram Bot was throwing up Cowin app details upon entry of phone numbers. The data was being accessed by bot from a threat actor database, which seems to have been populated with previously stolen data," he said.</p>

<p>Experts have noted that the CoWIN breach controversy warrants an urgent need for a data protection bill that will protect citizens from such exposure and ensure the accountability of institutions.</p>

<p>A bot, short for robot, is a software application programmed to perform tasks through Robotic Process Automation, or RPA. Bots work by automatically going through a set of instructions, and they carry out tasks and processes much faster, more accurately, and at a higher volume than it would otherwise take humans.</p>

<p>On Telegram, every bot has a unique handle. To add a bot, one has to simply search for it, click on the bot handle and they will be able to interact with it in the chat window.</p>

<p>These bots can support "any kind of task or service," with some popular functions including delivering answers to users' FAQs, converting certain file types into others, or setting reminders for users.</p>

<p>However, of late, there has been sharp in increase of mishandling bots and primarily used to run scams, or exfiltrate personal data.</p>

<h2><strong>Can a bot threaten privacy of users?</strong></h2>

<p>Apparently yes, One of the main concerns raised&nbsp;about chatbots is the collection of personal information. Many chatbots collect user data, including their conversations, personal preferences, and location. Though this data is used used to personalise the chatbot responses and improve the user experience, there have been many instances where it is used for scams and identity thefts, spread malware and launch cyberattacks.</p>

<h2><strong>Has this happened before?</strong></h2>

<p>Twice there have been claims of CoWIN breach. The first instance was in June 2021, where a few had claimed the portal had been hacked resulting in the sale of data relating to 150 million Indians. The Indian government denied that this had happened.</p>

<p>Then in January last year, when similar reports of a data breach emerged, the chief of the National Health Authority, Ram Sewak Sharma, responded saying the database was "safe and secure".</p>

<h2><strong>What is CoWIN and how does it work?</strong></h2>

<p>CoWIN, which stands for COVID-19 Vaccine Intelligence Network, is an app introduced and made under the aegis of the central government for the vaccination process.</p>

However, a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed by a team at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine claims to hold the capability to do just that.</p>

<p>As per a report by the news agency AFP, the AI-based tool has shown promising results in reading physicians' notes and accurately predicting patients' risk of death, readmission to the hospital, and other important outcomes related to their care.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>NYUTron</strong></h2>

<p>The software, known as NYUTron, is currently being used by NYU's affiliated hospitals in New York. The team behind this amazing tool hopes that one day it will become a standard component of healthcare practices.</p>

<p>Talking to AFP, lead author Eric Oermann, a neurosurgeon and computer scientist at NYU, explained that while predictive models in medicine have existed for some time, they are not widely used due to the challenges of organising and formatting the required data.</p>

<p>However, the team realised that physicians consistently write detailed notes about their clinical observations and patient interactions. This, as per the team, can be a valuable source of data for building predictive models.</p>

<p>"One thing that's common in medicine everywhere, is physicians write notes about what they've seen in clinic, what they've discussed with patients," said Oermann.</p>

<p>"So our basic insight was, can we start with medical notes as our source of data, and then build predictive models on top of it?"</p>

<h2><strong>How did they achieve this feat?</strong></h2>

<p>NYUTron is basically a large language model. To train it, researchers used millions of clinical notes from the health records of 387,000 patients treated at NYU Langone hospitals between January 2011 and May 2020.</p>

<p>These notes encompassed various types of records written by doctors, including progress notes, radiology reports, and discharge instructions, resulting in a massive corpus of 4.1 billion words.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Using this data, the software made predictions which were then evaluated against real outcomes retrospectively.</p>

<p>One of the significant challenges the software faced was interpreting the diverse natural language used by physicians, which often includes unique abbreviations and variations.</p>

<h2><strong>The results?</strong></h2>

<p>Overall, NYUTron exhibited impressive performance, correctly identifying 95 per cent of patients who died in the hospital before discharge and predicting 80 per cent of patients who would be readmitted within 30 days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Furthermore, NYUTron accurately estimated the actual length of stay for 79 per cent of patients, correctly identified 87 per cent of cases where insurance coverage was denied, and accurately recognized 89 per cent of cases where patients had additional conditions accompanying their primary disease.</p>

<p>It surpassed the predictions made by most doctors and outperformed non-AI computer models currently in use.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Can artificial intelligence&nbsp;replace doctors?</strong></h2>

<p>Interestingly, no. The tool was outperformed by the most experienced physician in the study, who achieved results exceeding the model's predictions.</p>

<p>As per Oermann, "the most senior physician who's actually a very famous physician, he had superhuman performance, better than the model."</p>

<p>Oermann emphasised that AI can never replace the physician-patient relationship. Instead, AI tools like NYUTron aim to "provide more information for physicians seamlessly at the point of care so they can make more informed decisions."&nbsp;He remarked that "the sweet spot for technology and medicine isn't that it's going to always deliver necessarily superhuman results, but it's going to really bring up that baseline."</p>

‘A platform that is sanely run,’ Meta hits out at Elon Musk as it introduces Twitter rival

<p>A new menu option called 'updates' has been introduced on the app from where both status and channels can be accessed. The channel updates will be separate from regular WhatsApp chats.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, WhatsApp announced that it will soon introduce the "screen-sharing," option for its users to modify their messages.</p>

<p>However, this feature will not be available for old versions of Android, and might also not work in large group calls.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The communist country has grown concerned over the increasing use of Wi-fi or Bluetooth-based services to share content deemed politically sensitive by the authorities. For instance, last October, some activists in China were caught sharing anti-Xi Jinping photos using such services.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to some media reports, Bluetooth-based file-sharing apps were used extensively during the 2019 Hong Kong protests. Also, Chinese people were found sharing anti-government content last winter when sentiments against stringent anti-COVID-19 measures were at their peak.</p>

<h2><strong>Security assessment mandatory</strong></h2>

<p>According to draft rules, companies will have to undergo a strict security assessment by the authorities before they make their communication apps widely accessible for Chinese users, any app which could be used for “public expression and social mobilisation”.</p>

<p>Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly prevalent in our daily lives, leading to concerns about its potential impact on employment, disruptions in different industries, and the propagation of political ideologies.</p>

<p>WION spoke with Kevin Baragona, the founder of DeepAI.org, on how one should envision the future of AI in the next decade. DeepAI is the first online text-to-image generator and recently added AI Chat. It offers free access without any registration and has upgraded plans as well.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Deepfakes and the threat of AI propagating political ideologies&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>As much as it is interesting to create pictures or videos&nbsp;that appear real, the DeepAI.org founder said that the trouble is when they’re used to malign others or mislead people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Baragona called on deepfakes made without prior permission to be declared illegal. "No one should be able to steal your face and voice."</p>

<p>He pointed out how there is already been at least one instance where a fake image of a bombing of the Pentagon caused the stock market to drop.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The most obvious is creating deepfakes of political leaders and those in the public eye. They could be generated stating various positions that differ from their actual platform. These could spread rapidly through social media and online communities and never be fully corrected."</p>

<p>For instance, he said, there was a case where a deepfake of Ukrainian President Zelensky manipulated Fed Chairman Jerome Powell into revealing information.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Lightning-fast AI tech</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Speaking on the ease with which AI can be put into use, the expert said, "Prior to AI, designers could have readily created the same image with Photoshop. But with AI text-to-image generators, it’s much faster and anyone can do it."</p>

<p>He calls AI as the "nuclear weapon of software."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"With nuclear weapons, just because you have the blueprint of how to make a nuclear bomb, doesn’t mean you have the materials or production facility to do so. In many cases, these aren’t seasoned criminals, but kids in need of guidance. But, if they’re allowed to go unchecked without proper oversight and discipline, they could cause a lot of harm to others," he said. &nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Disruption in transportation, education industry&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The expert said that transitioning to AI navigation will also result in large-scale job displacement in the personal and commercial transportation industry. "Drivers will simply not be needed anymore," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"One job that’s been created is Prompt Engineer," he said giving an illustration of jobs created courtesy of AI technology. "Even just 12 months ago, prompt engineering wasn’t interesting to anyone outside the AI research community."&nbsp;</p>

<p>AI revolution also comes with more job opportunities for unskilled people. DeepAI.org founder said, "AI could create jobs in that it allows people who aren’t as skilled at a task to provide professional quality work in it."&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that AI is a very complex technology to regulate and the truth is that no one is sure how one can regulate something smarter than humans.</p>

"With nuclear weapons, just because you have the blueprint of how to make a nuclear bomb, doesn’t mean you have the materials or production facility to do so. In many cases, these aren’t seasoned criminals, but kids in need of guidance. But, if they’re allowed to go unchecked without proper oversight and discipline, they could cause a lot of harm to others," he said. <p>India's educational technology giant Byju's is expected to be laying off more employees, The Morning Context reported this on Wednesday citing an internal communication seen by it. The company hasn't denied or confirmed the report so far.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report mentioned that the ed-tech company intends to lay off around 1,000 employees and the move will hurt sales and marketing teams the most.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report also mentioned that the marketing executives are on third-party payrolls of the companies such as Channelplay, Randstad, and more.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this year in January, the company fired around 5,000 people across verticals in a mass layoff. The company has also reportedly sacked many top executives, including senior vice presidents who were apparently taking big salaries (reported to be around Rs10 million).&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Byju's sued by agent linked to $1.2 billion loan&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>A couple of days back, the company said that it filed a suit against investment management firm Redwood to challenge the acceleration of a $1.2 billion term loan B facility and disqualify the lender for its "predatory tactics".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Byju's said Redwood purchased a significant portion of the loan while primarily trading in distressed debt, which was contrary to the conditions of the term loan facility. The company filed the suit in the New York Supreme Court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Byju's also issued a notice to Redwood entities disqualifying the investment firm as a lender with critical rights under the term loan norms once it takes effect, the company said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We had to take these measures following a series of predatory tactics by the lenders, led by Redwood," the startup said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bloomberg reported in May that Byju's Alpha was sued by an agent for lenders owed $1.2 billion after months of negotiations between creditors and the education technology firm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report added that Glas Trust Company and investor Timothy R. Pohl filed the action against Byju's Alpha, Tangible Play, Inc., and Riju Ravindran. Think and Learn Private, which is the ed-tech giant founded by Byju Raveendran, is suing the two firms. The regulatory filing noted that Ravindran is a director of Think and Learn.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Court filings have been redacted with details on why the complaint was brought and what does Glas Trust and Pohl want. The report mentioned that one filing suggests that the case may be in connection to a fight over the election of directors, although it does not include specific charges.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Before an anti-money laundering investigation began in April, Byju's was scrambling to please creditors on the refinancing of the loan.</p>

<p>US&nbsp;senators on Thursday introduced two separate bipartisan artificial intelligence bills on Thursday amid growing interest in addressing issues surrounding the technology.</p>

<p>One would require the US&nbsp;government to be transparent when using AI to interact with people, and another would establish an office to determine if the United States is remaining competitive in the latest technologies.</p>

<p>Lawmakers are beginning to consider what new rules might be needed because of the rise of AI. The technology made headlines earlier this year when ChatGPT, an AI programme that can answer questions in written form, became generally available.</p>

<p>The bill also requires agencies to create a way for people to appeal any decisions made by AI.</p>

<p>"The federal government needs to be proactive and transparent with AI utilization and ensure that decisions aren't being made without humans in the driver's seat," said Braun in a statement.</p>

<p>Senators Michael Bennet and Mark Warner, both Democrats, introduced a measure along with Republican Senator Todd Young that would establish an Office of Global Competition Analysis that would seek to ensure that the United States stayed in the front of the pack in developing artificial intelligence.</p>

<p>For someone dealing with the grief that comes with loss, this technology can be a boon, but it also raises ethical questions.</p>

<h2><strong>Re-animating the deceased</strong></h2>

<p>Nothing can bring back the people we've lost. However, this technology tries to capture a part of their essence, which can help provide you with some semblance of comfort.</p>

<p>There are many startups offering the service. One such company called DeepBrain AI has a programme called "Rememory".</p>

<p>As per the AI firm's head of development, Joseph Murphy, they create a digital replica of the deceased using hours of video.</p>

<p>"I'll call it a niche part of our business. It's not a growth area for us," he said as per AFP.</p>

<p>Another company, StoryFile,&nbsp;follows the same idea.</p>

<p>The company's head, Stephen Smith, said, "Our approach is to capture the wonder of an individual, then use the AI tools."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's a very fine ethical area that we're taking with great care," he added.&nbsp;StoryFile, claims several thousand users already use its Life service.</p>

<p>A few years back in 2015, Kyuda lost her best friend Roman to a tragic car accident. To deal with the grief, she developed a chatbot named 'Roman'. This chatbot was trained using thousands of text messages that her deceased friend had sent to loved ones.</p>

<p>After two years, Kyuda introduced Replika, a platform that provides highly advanced personalised conversational bots.</p>

<p>However, according to a spokesperson, Replika, unlike its predecessor Roman, "is not a platform made to recreate a lost loved one."</p>

<h2><strong>Is it only chatbots?</strong></h2>

<p>No. There are companies that are developing virtual clones.</p>

<p>One such company, Somnium Space, wants to create virtual clones of people while they are still alive. These clones would exist in a different world after the person passes away.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a YouTube video announcing his product, Live Forever, CEO Artur Sychov acknowledged that this concept "It's not for everyone". He acknowledged that individual choices are involved.</p>

<p>"Do I want to meet my grandfather who's in AI? I don't know. But those who want that will be able to."</p>

<h2><strong>The ethical challenges</strong></h2>

<p>Thanks to regenerative technology, these AI avatars can say things the person never said in real life.</p>

<p>According to Joseph Murphy from DeepBrainAI, "These are philosophical challenges, not technical challenges".</p>

<p>"I would say that is a line right now that we do not plan on crossing, but who knows what the future holds?" he added.</p>

<p>Candi Cann, a professor at Baylor University who is studying this topic in South Korea, suggests that interacting with an AI clone of a person can be helpful for achieving closure, especially in "complicated" situations.</p>

<p>"I think it can be helpful to interact with an AI version of a person in order to get closure&nbsp;— particularly in situations where grief was complicated by abuse or trauma," said Cann.</p>

<p>Mari Dias, a professor of medical psychology at Johnson &amp; Wales University, asked her bereaved patients about their thoughts on virtual contact with their deceased loved ones. She revealed, that the&nbsp;most common answer is 'I don't trust AI. I'm afraid it's going to say something I'm not going to accept'. They express concerns and a lack of trust in AI. They fear that the AI avatar might say something they cannot accept, and they feel they have no control over the avatar's actions.</p>

<p>In a statement, a Meta spokesperson said the company had set up an internal task force to deal with the claims, adding "We’re continuously exploring ways to actively defend against this behaviour, and we set up an internal task force to investigate these claims and immediately address them."</p>

<h2><strong>Claims in the SIO report</strong></h2>

<p>The SIO report published on Wednesday said that Instagram's recommendation algorithms are a key reason for the social media platform's effectiveness in advertising SG-CSAM.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The creation and trading of Child Sexual Abuse Material, or CSAM, is often regarded as the most harmful of the widespread abuses of online communication and social media platforms," the report said. The SIO identified 405 accounts advertising the sale SG-CSAM on Instagram, as well as 128 seller accounts on Twitter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"While it is likely that some seller accounts (on different social media platforms) may be impostors redistributing content, scammers, or a third party coercing the child, it appears that by and large underage sellers are producing and marketing content of their own accord," the report added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What is SG-CSAM?</strong></h2>

<p>SG-CSAM is a type of content when an image or video appears to be created by the minor subject in the image. While SG-CSAM is often still illegal to possess "and distribute in the United States, the fact that children (often teenagers) are sharing these images amongst each other voluntarily has reduced the focus on this vector of CSAM creation," the SIO said in its Wednesday report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Such type of content can sometimes be initially distributed voluntarily (such as to a romantic partner) but then redistributed or posted publicly leading to uncontrolled redistribution of images.</p>

<p>This issue can overlap with Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery (NCII, sometimes referred to as “revenge porn”), in which sexual images are distributed without the consent of the subject, the report said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The SIO also pointed out that in recent years, the creation and distribution of SG-CSAM increasingly became a commercial venture.</p>

<p>The observatory had acted on a tip from The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), which in a report mentioned Instagram's SG-CSAM issues along with the SIO's findings. Microsoft 365 down, thousands of users face outage

<p>The Australian unit of Dell Technologies Inc was found guilty of misleading the customers about the prices, and discounts on its add-on monitors on its official website, said Australia's competition regulator on Tuesday.</p>

<p>As per reports, the customers who chose to purchase a personal computer system were given the option by Dell Australia in the name of a lucrative offer to bundle a compatible monitor at a discounted, or a 'strikethrough' price.</p>

<p>The company suggested to the clients that it would be much cheaper to buy the monitor in a bundle rather than separately.</p>

<p>"Dell Australia admitted that the monitors were not sold for the 'strikethrough' price for most of the relevant time and, in some cases, the add-on price shown was more expensive than if the monitor was bought on a stand-alone basis," the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said in a filing.</p>

<p>Apple also updated its Mac Studio desktop machine. The company said that the new M2 Ultra chip can process AI work that rival chips cannot owing to insufficient memory.</p>

<h2><strong>Mac Pro has a new version now</strong></h2>

<p>Mac Pro has a new version now! The highest-performing desktop will now come with an M2 Ultra chip and with a price tag starting at USD 6999. The M2 Ultra chip is essentially two of Apple's largest M2 chips bonded together, a similar approach Apple took to boosting the performance of its M1 chips.</p>

<p>Until Monday, the Mac Pro was the last computer in Apple's lineup that still used an Intel chip.</p>

<p>"For PC users, there's never been a better time to switch to a Mac," said John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering.</p>

<p>The updates combine improvements to high-end machines aimed at the developer crowd at Monday's event with tweaks to messaging and a new M.ac Air aimed at a much broader group of customers, including potential switchers to Apple.</p>

<p>Apple has also tinkered with iOS software. The small improvements are aimed at annoyances like a "NameDrop" feature to shared contact info more easily. There have been other changes focussed on safety and security. This includes a check-in feature which will tell contacts when a user has arrived safely at a destination.</p>

<h2><strong>What the actual 'duck'</strong></h2>

<p>Apple is famous for correcting the F-word to 'ducking'. It has now said that it was improving the autocorrect on iPhone keyboards.</p>

<p>"In those moments where you just want to type a ducking word, well, the keyboard will learn it, too," said Craig Federighi, Apple's software chief.&nbsp;</p>
