Did Trump vs Harvard row begin due to a 'mistake'? White House official reveals

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States has said that origin of COVID-19 was &ldquo;more likely&rdquo; from a lab-related incident than natural transmission through animals. Trump administration seems to be pushing the same theory by dedicating a whole page to it on the White House website.
The page reiterates the findings shared in the 520-page report from December 2024, which concluded that the coronavirus likely leaked from a Chinese laboratory following a two-year-long investigation into the outbreak that killed 1.1 million Americans.&nbsp;

Interestingly, the page suggesting that COVID-19 originated in a Chinese lab surfaces amid the on-going trade tensions with between the two biggest economies of the world. This highlights that the White House is taking a political stance against China as the trade war unleashed by US President Donald Trump rages.
It is not clear which date the webpage appeared on the White House website.

The webpage reads: &ldquo;&lsquo;The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2&rsquo; publication &mdash; which was used repeatedly by public health officials and the media to discredit the lab leak theory &mdash; was prompted by Dr. Fauci to push the preferred narrative that COVID-19 originated naturally.&rdquo;
Dr Anthony S Fauci, who was accused of a wide range of misdeeds linked to the debate over the origin of the pandemic, was pardoned by former president Joe Biden before he left the office.

<h2>Origin of COVID-19</h2>
The webpage lists 5 key points, suggesting the origins of COVID-19 were not natural:
1. The virus possesses a biological characteristic that is not found in nature.
2. According to the data, all cases of COVID-19 stem from a single introduction into humans, which is contrary to previous pandemics, where there were multiple spillover events.
3. Wuhan is home to China&rsquo;s foremost SARS research lab, which has a history of conducting gain-of-function research (gene altering and organism supercharging) without adequate biosafety.

4. The researchers at Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) were sick with COVID-like symptoms in the fall of 2019, months before COVID-19 was discovered at the wet market.
5. By nearly all measures of science, any evidence suggesting a natural origin of coronavirus would have already surfaced. But it hasn&rsquo;t.

She further said that apps such as Signal come pre-installed in government devices. Do these claims hold enough merit? Watch this video to find out more.

'A f***ing idiot': Trump to fire NSA Mike Waltz for adding journalist in top secret war chat, says report

The White House on Monday (March 24) admitted that a journalist was mistakenly included in a messaging group where top US officials, including Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, discussed planned military strikes in Yemen.
On Monday, National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes said, &ldquo;We are reviewing how an inadvertent number was added to the chain.&rdquo;

<h2>Here's what happened:</h2>
The issue came to light after The Atlantic published an article by its editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg. In it, he revealed that he had been unexpectedly added to a Signal group chat where confidential military operations were being discussed.
&ldquo;US national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn&rsquo;t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling,&rdquo; Goldberg wrote, adding, &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve never seen a breach quite like this.&rdquo;
According to Goldberg, the conversation began on Tuesday, 11 March, when he was added to a Signal group titled &ldquo;Houthi PC small group.&rdquo; Over the following days, the group discussed detailed plans for airstrikes targeting the Houthis in Yemen, who have been attacking Western ships in the Red Sea for over a year.

Goldberg said that messages in the group included highly sensitive and classified information, with participants identifying themselves as senior figures in the Trump administration, including Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Antonio Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance.
In one message, &ldquo;Michael Waltz&rdquo; wrote: &ldquo;Team &ndash; establishing a principles [sic] group for coordination on Houthis, particularly for over the next 72 hours. My deputy Alex Wong is pulling together a tiger team at deputies/agency Chief of Staff level following up from the meeting in the [Situation Room] this morning for action items and will be sending that out later this evening.&rdquo;
Other users followed up by naming representatives for various departments, including the CIA, Treasury, and National Security Council. Pete Hegseth named Dan Caldwell to represent the Pentagon.
Despite his doubts about the group&rsquo;s authenticity, Goldberg said the participants went on to share classified discussions about targets, timing, and potential consequences of the planned strikes. At one point, Vice President Vance voiced hesitation, saying he believed the administration was &ldquo;making a mistake&rdquo; by moving forward so quickly, though he agreed to back the majority view.
Hegseth argued against delaying the strikes, saying that any hold-up could risk leaks and make the administration appear &ldquo;indecisive.&rdquo; He wrote, &ldquo;We are prepared to execute, and if I had final go or no go vote, I believe we should. This [is] not about the Houthis. I see it as two things: 1) Restoring Freedom of Navigation, a core national interest; and 2) Reestablish deterrence, which [former President Joe Biden] cratered.&rdquo;
On Friday, 15 March, at 11:44 AM ET, Goldberg received a &ldquo;team update&rdquo; from Hegseth that reportedly contained operational details about the airstrikes &mdash; including targets, weapons, and timing. Just two hours later, explosions were heard in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen.

In it, he revealed that he had been unexpectedly added to a Signal group chat where confidential military operations were being discussed. “US national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling,” Goldberg wrote, adding, “I’ve never seen a breach quite like this.” According to Goldberg, the conversation began on Tuesday, 11 March, when he was added to a Signal group titled “Houthi PC small group.” Over the following days, the group discussed detailed plans for airstrikes targeting the Houthis in Yemen, who have been attacking Western ships in the Red Sea for over a year. Also read: ‘We’re still waiting for you’: Zelensky says he invited JD Vance again to visit Ukraine Goldberg said that messages in the group included highly sensitive and classified information, with participants identifying themselves as senior figures in the Trump administration, including Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Antonio Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance. In one message, “Michael Waltz” wrote: “Team – establishing a principles [sic] group for coordination on Houthis, particularly for over the next 72 hours. My deputy Alex Wong is pulling together a tiger team at deputies/agency Chief of Staff level following up from the meeting in the [Situation Room] this morning for action items and will be sending that out later this evening.” Other users followed up by naming representatives for various departments, including the CIA, Treasury, and National Security Council. Pete Hegseth named Dan Caldwell to represent the Pentagon. Despite his doubts about the group’s authenticity, Goldberg said the participants went on to share classified discussions about targets, timing, and potential consequences of the planned strikes. At one point, Vice President Vance voiced hesitation, saying he believed the administration was “making a mistake” by moving forward so quickly, though he agreed to back the majority view. Hegseth argued against delaying the strikes, saying that any hold-up could risk leaks and make the administration appear “indecisive.” He wrote, “We are prepared to execute, and if I had final go or no go vote, I believe we should. This [is] not about the Houthis. I see it as two things: 1) Restoring Freedom of Navigation, a core national interest; and 2) Reestablish deterrence, which [former President Joe Biden] cratered.” On Friday, 15 March, at 11:44 AM ET, Goldberg received a “team update” from Hegseth that reportedly contained operational details about the airstrikes — including targets, weapons, and timing. Just two hours later, explosions were heard in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen. (With inputs from agencies)

‘Didn’t think it could be real’: US journalist ends up in classified war plan 'group chat' with Hegseth, Vance

Still in the United States, the rift between the executive and the judiciary has extended to law firms as well. After spending months in the headlines for his own trials, Donald Trump is now targeting legal firms and lawyers that have filed cases against his presidential decisions.

US: White House justifies crackdown on legal firms & judges

President Donald Trump has instructed the US Department of Justice (DOJ) to impose penalties on lawyers and law firms involved in what he described as &ldquo;frivolous, unreasonable and vexatious&rdquo; legal action against the US government.
In a memo released by the White House on Friday, Trump said, &ldquo;Lawyers and law firms that engage in actions that violate the laws of the United States or rules governing attorney conduct must be efficiently and effectively held accountable. Accountability is especially important when misconduct by lawyers and law firms threatens our national security, homeland security, public safety, or election integrity.&rdquo;

<h2>Immigration lawyers in the spotlight</h2>
The directive, titled Preventing Abuses of the Legal System and the Federal Court, particularly targeted immigration lawyers. Trump claimed they &ldquo;frequently coach clients to conceal their past or lie about their circumstances when asserting their asylum claims, all in an attempt to circumvent immigration policies enacted to protect our national security and deceive the immigration authorities and courts into granting them undeserved relief.&rdquo;
He ordered acting Attorney General Bondi to investigate the behaviour of lawyers and firms that have filed lawsuits against the federal government over the last eight years. Trump also called on both Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to prioritise enforcement of rules around attorney conduct and discipline.

<h2>Targeting prominent law firms</h2>
In recent weeks, Trump has taken executive actions against major legal firms he associates with his political opponents, including efforts to revoke their government contracts and security clearances.
One of the firms singled out was Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton &amp; Garrison LLP. Trump had initially demanded a review of their contracts and clearances but withdrew the order after the firm agreed to provide pro bono legal work for the administration.

Another firm, Perkins Coie, previously linked to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, launched legal action after Trump issued an order banning its lawyers from entering federal buildings. US District Judge Beryl Howell, appointed by former President Barack Obama, temporarily blocked part of that order.
Covington &amp; Burling, which offers legal services to former special counsel Jack Smith in a personal capacity, was also targeted by the president.
<h2>Trump defends his actions</h2>
Defending his actions on Friday, Trump told reporters, &ldquo;Well, the law firms all want to make deals. You mean the law firms that we&rsquo;re going after, that went after me for four years ruthlessly, violently, illegally? Are those the law firms you&rsquo;re talking about?&rdquo;
&ldquo;They&rsquo;re not babies. They&rsquo;re very sophisticated people,&rdquo; he added. &ldquo;Those law firms did bad things. Bad things. They went after me for years.&rdquo;

<h2>Frustration over court orders</h2>
According to sources close to the matter, Trump has been frustrated in recent days by a series of temporary court orders that have slowed his political agenda. One such case challenged the legality of Elon Musk&rsquo;s cost-cutting efforts, branding them as potentially unconstitutional.
However, the case causing the most frustration for the White House involves Trump&rsquo;s use of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to deport suspected Venezuelan gang members without court proceedings.
In that case, US District Judge James Boasberg ordered that any ongoing deportation flights be recalled and temporarily halted further removals under the Act.
The administration failed to return two flights, arguing the judge&rsquo;s instructions were not issued in writing. This prompted Boasberg to question whether the government had ignored a court order.
&ldquo;You felt that you could disregard it because it wasn&rsquo;t in the written order. That&rsquo;s your first argument?&rdquo; Boasberg asked during a recent hearing. &ldquo;The idea that because my written order was pithier so it could be disregarded, that&rsquo;s one heck of a stretch,&rdquo; Boasberg added.
The White House insists it did not break the law. At the core of the dispute is the administration&rsquo;s view that the judge had no authority to hear the case, a position that overlooks the established role of federal courts in reviewing how laws are applied.

'Unreasonable and vexatious': Trump targets immigration lawyers with new DOJ crackdown on ‘frivolous’ lawsuits

Donald Trump promised a new "Golden Age" for America. In the Oval Office, at least, he has lived up to his promise with a blingy makeover.
The Republican has decked out the inner sanctum of the US presidency with gilded trophies and gold-plated, Trump-branded coasters, and filled almost every available inch of wall space with portraits of his predecessors.
Almost every day seems to bring something new. This week Trump unveiled a copy of the Declaration of Independence -- the historic document triggering America's freedom from the British monarchy 250 years ago.
Far more than during his first term, it's as if the 78-year-old former reality TV star and billionaire property mogul is creating something that is part-studio and part-exclusive real estate.
"President Trump is very good at playing the role of Donald Trump," Peter Loge, director of George Washington University's School of Media, told AFP.
"The show is the point. Part of the show is the bling. It would be surprising if Trump did not remake the Oval Office into a TV set that reflected his brand."
<h2>Presidential portraits</h2>
But there's also a serious political message behind Trump's frenetic redecoration.
The Oval Office is the most potent symbol of American power, a backdrop to his frequent news conferences and televised meetings with foreign dignitaries -- including a recent meltdown between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
It was, therefore, no coincidence when the gallery of presidential portraits got a new addition: the 19th-century president James Polk.

Under Polk, the 11th US president, the United States saw its biggest period of territorial expansion by taking in huge swaths of the west coast, the southwest and Texas.&nbsp;
It was a clear piece of political symbolism at a time that Trump is alarming allies by openly talking about annexing Greenland, reclaiming the Panama Canal and taking over Gaza.
<h2>'Would Biden do this?'</h2>
Each president picks most of their decor from similar sources including the White House art collection, but they still manage to stamp a very personal touch on the Oval.
The difference from Trump's Democratic predecessor Joe Biden could hardly be greater -- as the 47th president himself is well aware.
"Do you think Joe Biden would do this? I don't think so," Trump said Tuesday as he pulled back light-protecting drapes on the Declaration of Independence in an interview with Fox News Channel's "The Ingraham Angle."
Trump also pointed out gold cherubs newly installed above the doorways. "They say angels bring good luck," he said.
Biden's Oval was a relative model of restraint with five portraits around the famed fireplace, including wartime president Franklin D. Roosevelt's directly above the hearth.
Trump has nine -- and that doesn't count others near his desk, including Republican icon Ronald Reagan's.
While Biden had a sprawling Swedish ivy plant that reputedly dated back to John F. Kennedy on the mantelpiece, Trump has seven ornate gilded vessels, some of which are more than 200 years old.

And while both Trump and Biden had a bust of civil rights leader Martin Luther King on display, Trump has brought back the bust of Britain's World War II prime minister Winston Churchill that he had during his first term.
<h2>Framed mugshot</h2>
The ostentatious display should probably not come as a surprise for a man who announced his first presidential run by descending on a golden escalator at Trump Tower in New York.&nbsp;
The billionaire has long branded everything he can with his name, from buildings to bibles.
And Trump's makeover rarely shies away from promoting both his own brand and an image of strength that has been central to his political career.
Recently, one item that has been on permanent display is a large map identifying the "Gulf of America," which the Trump administration has renamed from the Gulf of Mexico.
Trump is even planning to pave over the famed Rose Garden that the Oval Office overlooks, to give it the patio-like feel of his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
"The grass just doesn't work," Trump told Fox, adding that it gets "soaking wet."
One of Trump's proudest touches, though, is a very unconventional portrait that hangs near those of his illustrious forebears.
Right outside the Oval Office in a gold frame hangs a photo of Trump -- his 2023 mugshot, as featured on the cover of a tabloid newspaper, from when he was booked in Georgia for alleged attempts to interfere with the 2020 election.

Trump brings ‘Golden Age’ to Oval Office with gold-plated makeover

White House on Wednesday (Mar 19) confirmed that US &ldquo;intelligence sharing in terms of defence of Ukraine will continue to be shared.&rdquo; This comes following an hour-long &ldquo;fantastic phone conversation&rdquo; between the two leaders.
The conversation between the two nations has moved &ldquo;beyond the economic minerals deal&rdquo; with a focus on &ldquo;partial ceasefire, and we are moving towards a full ceasefire and a longstanding peace in this conflict,&rdquo; said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Referring to earlier discussion between the two leaders, Leavitt said, &ldquo;The Ukrainian president, at the time, wasn&rsquo;t talking about a greater peace deal. We are now at that place where we are talking about that.&rdquo; she said.

<h2>&lsquo;Working together for lasting peace&rsquo;</h2>

&ldquo;The leaders agreed Ukraine and America will continue working together to bring about a real end to the war and that lasting peace under President Trump&rsquo;s leadership can be achieved,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;
Leavitt said that Zelensky thanked Trump for the US support, especially the Javelin missiles, which the US president provided in his efforts towards peace.

<h2>&lsquo;The first step&rsquo;</h2>

&ldquo;President Trump also discussed Ukraine&rsquo;s electrical supply and nuclear power plants. 'In defence of Ukraine': US to continue sharing intelligence with Kyiv as talks move beyond minerals deal

The White House on Monday (March 17) dismissed a suggestion from a French member of the European Parliament to return the Statue of Liberty, saying that France would be "speaking German" without American intervention during World War II.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to the French MEP's comments on Monday, stating, "My advice to that unnamed, low-level French politician would be to remind them that it's only because of the United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now, so they should be very grateful to our great country."

<h2>'Give us back the Statue of Liberty'</h2>
The comments were made in response to French MEP Raphael Glucksmann, a member of the Socialists and Democrats group, who argued that the United States no longer deserves the statue. He suggested it should be returned because America had, in his view, aligned itself with tyrants.
Speaking at a party convention, Glucksmann said, "We're going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: 'Give us back the Statue of Liberty'."

He continued, "We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home."
Glucksmann also suggested that France could benefit if American professionals dismissed under the Trump administration decided to relocate.
"The second thing we're going to say to the Americans is: 'If you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to fire all the people who, through their freedom and their sense of innovation, their taste for doubt and research, have made your country the world's leading power, then we're going to welcome them'," he said.

His comments come after the US temporarily halted aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. Although aid to Kyiv has since resumed, President Donald Trump&rsquo;s approach to Russia, his well-documented admiration for Vladimir Putin, as well as his attacks on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, have caused the whole of Europe to be alarmed and rethink its dependence on the United States.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to the French MEP's comments on Monday, stating, "My advice to that unnamed, low-level French politician would be to remind them that it's only because of the United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now, so they should be very grateful to our great country." 'Give us back the Statue of Liberty' The comments were made in response to French MEP Raphael Glucksmann, a member of the Socialists and Democrats group, who argued that the United States no longer deserves the statue. He suggested it should be returned because America had, in his view, aligned itself with tyrants. Speaking at a party convention, Glucksmann said, "We're going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: 'Give us back the Statue of Liberty'." So it will be just fine here at home." Glucksmann also suggested that France could benefit if American professionals dismissed under the Trump administration decided to relocate. "The second thing we're going to say to the Americans is: 'If you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to fire all the people who, through their freedom and their sense of innovation, their taste for doubt and research, have made your country the world's leading power, then we're going to welcome them'," he said. The White House has responded to concerns over potential cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid after Elon Musk suggested that his administration's US DOGE Service might target waste and fraud within these programmes.
Speaking in a Fox Business interview on Monday, Musk claimed that &ldquo;waste and fraud&rdquo; in entitlement spending could be reduced, estimating potential savings of &ldquo;half a trillion, maybe 600 to 700 billion a year.&rdquo;&nbsp;

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified on Tuesday that Musk was referring specifically to eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse within these programmes. She accused the media of taking his words &ldquo;out of context&rdquo; and added that the administration is not considering direct cuts to Social Security benefits.
<h2>What does Elon Musk think about Social Security?</h2>
Elon Musk has previously criticised Social Security, calling it a &ldquo;Ponzi scheme&rdquo; and sharing a meme describing beneficiaries as &ldquo;the Parasite Class&rdquo;. When pressed about his estimate that entitlement programmes could contain up to $700 billion in fraud, Leavitt defended Musk&rsquo;s statement, explaining that it was based on internal reviews conducted by DOGE. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s an estimate based on what he&rsquo;s seen. He&rsquo;s not saying definitively,&rdquo; she told reporters.
The administration also cited a report from the Government Accountability Office, which estimates that fraud across the entire government could range between $233 billion and $521 billion annually. However, these figures apply to all federal spending, not just Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

Government auditors have found that improper Social Security payments total around $10 billion per year, less than 1% of total benefits. In 2023, Medicare and Medicaid payment errors amounted to approximately $100 billion, though this includes clerical errors, not just fraud.
<h2>Elon Musk's comments face public&nbsp;backlash</h2>
Musk&rsquo;s comments have sparked backlash, particularly from Democrats who fear that benefit cuts may be on the horizon. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan) took to social media, saying, &ldquo;Musk said the quiet part out loud: he&rsquo;s going after your Social Security and Medicare. Period.&rdquo;
Additionally, under DOGE&rsquo;s direction, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is preparing to lay off at least 7,000 employees. Overtime for workers processing benefit claims has been suspended, and some regional and field offices are being shut down. Democrats have warned that these changes could make it harder for Americans to access their benefits, potentially putting millions at risk.
