US President Donald Trump brushed off what he called "a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter" during his Tuesday (Sep 23) appearance at the United Nations, but the White House is taking the incidents seriously. Slamming the mishap as "purposeful" attempts to humiliate Trump, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has announced that an investigation has been launched to determine whether the escalator malfunction was deliberate. Speaking to Fox News, Leavitt insisted that "there better be accountability for those people," and vowed that she will "personally see to it". Escalatorgate: What happened? Footage from showed Trump and First Lady Melania stepping onto an escalator at UN headquarters in New York, only for it to abruptly stop after a short distance. Trump laughed it off, joking that if the First Lady "wasn't in great shape, she would have fallen." Later, during his UNGA address, Trump's teleprompter also suffered a malfunction, and the POTUS linked the incidents, jokingly, to what he called the UN’s broader failings. Also read | Colombia at UNGA demands criminal case against Trump. Here's why “Whoever is operating this teleprompter is in big trouble,” he said, before launching into his address criticizing the UN. He said the global body had failed to support his peace efforts and added that despite ending seven wars, he never received a call from the organization. “These are the two things I got from the United Nations: a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter. Thank you very much,” Trump quipped. White House claims malice, says we'll find those responsible for the malfunctions “If we find that these were UN and staffers who were purposefully trying to trip up, literally, trip up the President and the First Lady of the United States, well, there better be accountability for those people,” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News Tuesday evening. “I will personally see to it.” The White House then pointed to an earlier report in the Times of London suggesting that UN staffers had joked that they would shut off the escalators and "tell him (Trump) they ran out of money" amid US funding cuts. Conservative commentators and other officials also speculated about a potential plot against the president, reports AFP. Also read | Macron at UN warns against 'survival of the fittest' world order. Dig at Trump? UN responds to sabotage rumours The UN, however, offered a more mundane explanation. Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the escalator had triggered a built-in safety mechanism after someone filming the arrival accidentally set off the sensor at the top. “A subsequent investigation, including a readout of the machine's central processing unit, indicated that the escalator had stopped after a built-in safety mechanism on the comb step was triggered at the top of the escalator,” Dujarric said. The escalator was quickly reset and returned to service. The UN, however, declined to comment on the Teleprompter malfunction, noting that it is operated by the White House. Was Trump sabotaged at the UN? AFP, citing its reporters, stated that the escalators at UN headquarters are frequently out of order, suggesting the mishaps were likely coincidental rather than targeted.

Netizens react
The comments section was flooded with people trying to come up with a possible theory. A user suggested that it could be renovation work being carried out inside the building and debris being thrown from the windows. “Contractors often throw construction debris out the window rather than carry it downstairs. It may be that a room is being remodeled and furnishings such as carpet, drapery, etc. are being tossed out to be carried to a dumpster.” Another wrote, “Maybe Trump learned that President Lincoln was actually AGAINST slavery so decided to destroy the Lincoln bedroom?” One said, “Trump is throwing classified documents to a russian spy grounds keeper.”A user joked, “Melania throwing away Trump’s diapers?” While another pointe out, “that appears to be the Presidential bedroom, assuming that's a front view (else, it’s the Queen’s bedroom). That said, those bedroom windows are sealed shut.”“They are airing it out. The smell of death can be overwhelming,” a person wrote. Another questioned, “Why is the flag at half mast...” The incident comes shortly amid the health concerns surrounding US President Donald Trump. Recently, “Trump is dead” was trending on social media after the US president was not seen publicly for days, sparking rumours of his death. One user claimed the video was fake, saying that the windows in the White House are fixed and sealed. “Well, this is a fake video. The third floor’s rooms, such as the Solarium (originally a sun parlor atop the portico with floor-to-ceiling fixed windows for light and views), use non-operable windows by design to maintain the building’s neoclassical symmetry, provide security, and integrate with the central HVAC system installed during the 1948–1952 Truman renovation. These windows are fixed and sealed, often with bulletproof glass for protection, but this is a deliberate architectural and security feature. In other words, they do not open!”

Senior White House officials believe some European leaders are publicly backing President Trump’s push to end the war in Ukraine, while quietly undermining progress behind the scenes, Axios reported. The Biden administration has asked the Treasury Department to draw up possible sanctions that Europe could impose on Russia. These include a full ban on oil and gas imports, along with secondary tariffs on India and China, similar to those already levied by the US.
Trump aides shift blame to Europe
Two weeks after Trump’s Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, little has moved forward. Frustrated aides say responsibility lies with European allies, not Trump, and not even Putin. “The Europeans don’t get to prolong this war and backdoor unreasonable expectations, while also expecting America to bear the cost,” a senior White House official told Axios. “If Europe wants to escalate this war, that will be up to them. But they will be hopelessly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory,” they added.
A clash over Zelensky’s strategy
According to US officials, some European capitals are pressing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to hold out for stronger concessions from Moscow. Washington views this as unrealistic and damaging. “Getting to a deal is an art of the possible. But some of the Europeans continue to operate in a fairy-tale land that ignores the fact it takes two to tango,” another senior official said. While the White House sees Britain and France as more constructive, it accuses others of leaving America to shoulder most of the war’s cost.
Trump’s growing impatience
After meeting both Putin and Zelensky, Trump has repeatedly said the next step must be a face-to-face summit between the two leaders. Moscow has so far refused, and Kyiv has ruled out territorial talks until Russia comes to the table. At a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Trump expressed his irritation, “Everybody is posturing. It’s all bullshit.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt admitted progress was stalling. “Perhaps both sides of this war are not ready to end it themselves,” she said.
Europe pushes back on criticism
European officials, however, reject claims of double-dealing. One senior diplomat told Axios there was no gap between what Europe says publicly and what it does in private. The official added that European governments are already preparing fresh sanctions against Russia. On Friday, Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff met Zelensky’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak in New York. US President Donald Trump has set off a political storm by cancelling nearly $5 billion in foreign aid, using a controversial budget tactic known as a “pocket rescission.” The White House budget office confirmed the move on Friday, saying $4.9 billion had been blocked. USAID has long been in Trump’s sights, and the move will now put the agency under closer control of budget director Russ Vought. Hundreds of millions for global peacekeeping efforts are also being scrapped under the order.
What happens next?
The cuts are already facing legal challenges. A federal judge, Amir Ali, previously ruled Trump’s withholding of USAID funds unlawful. The new order has now been filed in court, setting up another round in the fight. Whatever he rules, the case is likely to head back to the appeals court and could eventually reach the Supreme Court. Senator Patty Murray accused the White House of trying to sell an “illegal tactic” as if it were “some sort of get-out-of-jail free card.”

US President Donald Trump, a controversial figure in his own right, has been receiving a barrage of compliments online. Not for being the "peacemaker" as he would like, but rather for his new "satanic" portrait that netizens say is "pretty accurate". The newly unveiled portrait of Donald Trump is setting off a firestorm online, with critics mocking its dramatic flair. The image, painted by Arizona-based Christian artist Vanessa Horabuena, shows Trump striding through a tunnel of American flags, bathed in an orange glow.
