Trump administration offered US federal workers an opportunity to leave their jobs in exchange for eight months severance through an email, according to AFP.
The proposal, which was sent to all two million federal workers, was praised by Trump’s advisor Elon Musk, who called it a historic “fork in the road”, according to US media reports.
It is expected that 5 to 10 per cent of the federal staff will quit and secure about $100 billion in savings, a senior administration official told NBC News.
The email stated that the resignation period will start on Tuesday (Jan 28) and will continue till February 6.
The move has been the most sweeping one against federal spending since Trump assumed office on January 20.
This comes after an order from Trump to federal employees, demanding them to work from the office full time after several years of working from home following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Federal workers who wish to take up the offer were asked to reply “resign” to the email.
“The federal workforce should comprise the best America has to offer. We will insist on excellence at every level,” the email read.
Musk, who is leading the new Department of Government Efficiency, has been tasked to make massive cuts in federal spending. He spent over $270 for Trump’s election campaign.

The drama between the MAGA movement and Elon Musk is far from over. Now, former White House strategist Steve Bannon has declared war on Musk, making it a personal mission to take down the X chief from the Make America Great Again or MAGA movement.
Calling the Tesla CEO a "truly evil guy", Bannon declared that he would have Musk "run out of here by Inauguration Day".
“He is a truly evil guy, a very bad guy. I made it my personal thing to take this guy down,” Bannon said.
“Before, because he put money in, I was prepared to tolerate it; I’m not prepared to tolerate it anymore,” he added.
He further denounced Musk for backing the H-1B visa stating that it was the "tech overlords" who use the immigration system to their advantage.
“This thing of the H-1B visas, it’s about the entire immigration system is gamed by the tech overlords, they use it to their advantage, the people are furious,” Bannon said in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
“He will do anything to make sure that any one of his companies is protected or has a better deal or he makes more money,” Bannon said. “His aggregation of wealth, and then — through wealth — power: that’s what he’s focused on.”

He then referred to one of the dialogues from Tom Cruise's character in the movie Tropic Thunder to slam the critics to bash him.

US President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday (Dec 22) at a Republican conference in Phoenix, Arizona tried to placate the concern of young conservatives over the influence Elon Musk wields over him and promised: "He's not gonna be president".

Trump's statement comes as, increasingly, from within the Republican Party and outside, concerns are being raised about the significant influence Musk holds over him.

He then cited the constitutional requirement that only natural-born US citizens are eligible for the role. Musk, born in South Africa, is legally barred from holding the office.

The president-elect also unveiled bold plans for his second term, including his plans to make it official US policy "that there are only two genders, male and female."

Trump on Musk: Not eligible for President

Responding to claims that Musk wields outsized sway over him, Trump quashed any suggestion of the Tesla CEO ascending to the presidency.

"He's not gonna be president, that I can tell you," Trump declared.

Trump's remarks follow criticism from Democrats, branding Musk "President Musk" due to his high-profile role as the incoming "efficiency czar" in the Trump 2.0 administration. Reports suggest that Republicans, too, are growing uneasy after Musk derailed a government funding deal with a flood of misleading social media posts, almost triggering a government shutdown. Trump waved off concerns about ceding the presidency to Musk and said, "No, no, that’s not happening."

Trump targets LGBTQ community

Trump doubled down on conservative priorities, promising swift action on transgender issues and vowed to "stop the transgender lunacy". He also announced plans to sign executive orders banning transgender individuals from the military and restricting discussions of gender identity in schools.

"I will sign executive orders to end child sexual mutilation, get transgender out of the military and out of our elementary schools and middle schools and high schools," said Trump.

He then pledged to "keep men out of women’s sports" and declared it would become "official US policy" that "there are only two genders, male and female."

Immigration crackdown

Going back to his favourite topic, immigration, Trump once again pledged to launch "the largest deportation operation in American history." He vowed to "immediately" designate drug cartels as "foreign terrorist organizations," a move he said would dismantle what he called a "criminal network operating on American soil."

Casting his presidency as a fresh chapter for the nation, Trump described his vision of a "golden age of America," and said that he will "end the war in Ukraine. I will stop the chaos in the Middle East, and I will prevent, I promise, World War III." However, he provided few details on how these objectives would be met.

"I will sign executive orders to end child sexual mutilation, get transgender out of the military and out of our elementary schools and middle schools and high schools," said Trump.

New York, United States
Stephen King, the popular horror writer behind bestsellers like 'IT,' 'The Shining,' and 'Pet Sematary,' on Saturday (Dec 21), slammed Elon Musk, and issued a stark warning over his influence over US president-elect Donald Trump.
Taking to Threads, Meta's alternative to X, King said that even though the Tesla CEO isn't the President-elect, he was "running the show".

Stephen King's warning

As the US prepares for Trump's second presidency, with his inauguration slated for 20 January, the acclaimed author on Threads said, "You can't call Elon Musk the President-elect, because he wasn't elected. In fact, having been born in Pretoria, he is ineligible to become president. Nonetheless, he is running the show. You know that, but it bears repeating."

Stephen King is not alone in his concern over Musk's growing influence over Trump. Unlike his first term, Trump now appears closely aligned with Musk, who has increasingly become a controversial and divisive figure in US politics.
The alliance between Trump and Musk has stirred widespread debate, particularly after some Republicans suggested Musk as a potential Speaker of the House during ongoing budget negotiations to prevent a government shutdown.

Fans react to King's post with dismay

King's post triggered an outpouring of reactions, with many readers expressing alarm at the scenario he painted. Some likened the current political climate to the horror found in King's novels, commenting that the reality was "scarier".
One fan commented, "This real life is eminently scarier than any of the books of yours that I’ve read. I hate it. Can I just try to first fight Pennywise or Cujo? You could write a book about Elon called maximum over-fried."

Others lamented the situation's global implications. A South African reader remarked, "Scary s*** this. And as a South African, I'm a tad embarrassed."
Another user commented, "He is President-select. Selected by Trump to buy the presidency."
Yet another posted AI images portraying Trump as a puppet whose strings Musk controls.

King's history of Musk criticism

This is not the first time the horror genre author has criticised Musk. In the lead-up to November's election, Musk shared a video alleging Vice President Kamala Harris supported "mandatory gun confiscation," alleging that "She wants to break the Constitution". King swiftly dismissed the claim, calling it "ridiculous." He later urged his followers to vote for Harris: "IF YOU LOVE DEMOCRACY, PLEASE VOTE FOR KAMALA HARRIS".
Earlier, King addressed rumours that Musk had banned him from posting on X (formerly Twitter). Speculation suggested King had referred to Musk as Trump's "first lady," angering the Tesla CEO and leading to a ban. King, however, clarified the rumour on Threads, stating, "I didn't [say it], but only because I didn't think of it."
