IPL 2026: Major boost for LSG as star all-rounder set to join team as Hasaranga replacement

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have finally received word on their overseas buy, Wanindu Hasaranga, who has now been ruled out of the ongoing IPL 2026. Hasaranga suffered a left hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup opener against Ireland and has missed all action since. LSG’s director of cricket, Tom Moody, revealed midway through the away KKR tie, which the visitors famously won on the last ball, that Hasaranga is unlikely to link up with the team this season, as they now seek a replacement. "We are preparing for the fact that he isn't going to be able to join us," Moody said. “We are looking at replacements that should be announced in 24-48 hours.”&nbsp;Per earlier reports, Hasaranga decided against taking mandatory fitness tests under SLC’s observation, which is compulsory for a player to obtain the NOC from the cricket board. After LSG bought him for a base price of INR 2 crore, Hasaranga failed to show up for the franchise after picking up a hamstring injury.&nbsp;&nbsp;Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ipl-2026-lsg-unsung-hero-mukul-choudhary-floors-kkr-in-last-ball-thriller-as-barren-run-continues-for-hosts-1775756984730">IPL 2026: LSG unsung hero Mukul Choudhary floors KKR in last-ball thriller as barren run continues for hosts</a> &nbsp;While the former world number one T20I bowler represented the Rajasthan Royals (RR) last season, he played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) from 2021 to 2023.&nbsp;<h3>Who will replace Hasaranga?</h3>Tom Moody revealed that LSG will seek his replacement at the earliest, with South African spin-bowling all-rounder George Linde emerging as the top contender. IPL 2025: After Hardik, now RR captain Riyan Parag penalised for slow over rate against CSK

Rajasthan Royals' star leg-spinner <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/wanindu-hasaranga">Wanindu Hasaranga</a> drew inspiration from South Indian cinema as he unleashed a &lsquo;Pushpa&rsquo;-style celebration during his match-winning spell against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/chennai-super-kings">Chennai Super Kings</a> in the ongoing IPL 2025.
The Sri Lankan spinner played a pivotal role in RR&rsquo;s thrilling six-run victory, bagging four crucial wickets in an action-packed Sunday clash. Each time he struck after conceding a six, Hasaranga responded with a cinematic flourish, pulling off Allu Arjun's iconic 'Pushpa' gesture.
"I love to watch Telugu, Malayalam, and Tamil films, and I got that from the Pushpa film," Hasaranga revealed after the match.

His four-wicket haul (4/35) dismantled CSK&rsquo;s batting order, including the prized scalp of Ruturaj Gaikwad, who threatened to take the game away with a blazing 63. Hasaranga named Gaikwad's dismissal as his favorite, crediting a brilliant catch by Riyan Parag.

"(On the wicket he enjoyed the most) <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ruturaj-gaikwad">Ruturaj Gaikwad</a> because he's a really good player, he batted really well, end of the innings I got him out. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/riyan-parag">Riyan Parag</a> took a brilliant catch, and Shimron Hetmyer was also gun in the field," he said.
Rajasthan Royals&rsquo; bowlers held their nerve to defend 182, bouncing back strongly after two tough outings. Hasaranga highlighted the crucial role he and fellow spinner Maheesh Theekshana play in RR&rsquo;s attack.
"We have a really good bowling attack, especially in the middle overs. Myself and Maheesh have different roles, sometimes with the old ball and sometimes in the middle," he said.
Rajasthan Royals made CSK tilt at the windmills throughout their 182-run defence. CSK's top stars came in and played a couple of shots but eventually perished and surrendered to a six-run loss.

Sri Lanka continued their dominant run at home and beat West Indies by five wickets, on DLS method, in the first of the three ODIs in Pallekele on Sunday (Oct 20). In a rain-marred clash, Nishan Madushka (69) and skipper Charith Asalanka (77) stood out for the hosts with fine half-centuries, chasing a revised target of 232 in 37 overs, before Wanindu Hasaranga&nbsp;weaved&nbsp;magic with the ball and took&nbsp;2 wickets for 18 runs.&nbsp;

Opting to bat first, Shai Hope-led West Indies were 100-4 but the duo of Sherfane Rutherford and Roston Chase got together, for the fifth-wicket, and added an unbeaten 85 before a long rain delay meant West Indies couldn't bat their full quota of overs (ending at 185/4 in 38.3 overs). Hasaranga and Dunith Wallalage kept things tough whereas Jeffrey Vandersay and captain Asalanka chipped in with a wicket each. As a result, the hosts were given a revised target of 232.

In reply, SL didn't start well courtesy of Alzarri Joseph's early strikes. The Lankans still kept themselves ahead throughout, mainly due to a 137-run fourth-wicket stand between Asalanka-Madushka. Eventually, Kamindu Mendis and Janith Liyanage ended proceedings for the hosts, with five wickets and 31 balls to spare.&nbsp;

SL vs WI: Charith Asalanka, Madushka and Hasaranga shine as hosts win rain-marred 1st ODI

After guiding Sri Lanka to play a tie against India in the first ODI in Colombo, ace all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga gets ruled out of the remainder of the series due to an injury in his left hamstring. A handy customer with both the bat and the ball, Hasaranga is the latest edition of a long list of first-team players, mostly bowlers, to miss the India series.&nbsp;

Jeffrey Vandersay, 34, is named Hasaranga's replacement for the last two ODIs, the second of which gets underway on Sunday (Aug 4).

"He experienced pain in his left hamstring while delivering the last ball of his 10th over during the first ODI. An MRI performed on the player, following this, confirmed the injury," the SLC media release stated late on Saturday (Aug&nbsp;3).

<h2>More worry mounts for SL</h2>

Hasaranga joins Dushmantha Chameera (bronchitis and respiratory infection), Nuwan Thushara (thumb), Dilshan Madushanka (hamstring) and Matheesha Pathirana (shoulder) as Sri Lanka star attack that got sidelined with respective injuries.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, even in the absence of these pacers in the XI, the Sri Lankan Team showed heart by not allowing India to walk away with the win in the first ODI. Despite the Men in Blue needing just one run off 15 balls and two wickets remaining to win the match, they tumbled under pressure, losing both wickets off successive balls, leading to a tied result.

Hasaranga was instrumental in helping Sri Lanka post a fighting total (230) after being reduced to 142 for six at one stage. Alongside his fellow all-rounder Dunith Wellalage, who scored a brilliant 67*, Hasaranga scored 24 off 35 balls, hitting two sixes and one four.

While bowling, Hasaranga was among the wickets, picking three, including the big ones of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. He later clean-bowled Kuldeep Yadav to put Sri Lanka in a commanding position.

Sri Lanka T20 skipper Wanindu Hasaranga quits ahead of India's tour

Sri Lanka have announced their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, with Wanindu Hasaranga leading the pack for the 2014 champions.

The squad announced on Thursday (May 9) includes Charith Asalanka as vice-captain while Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star bowler Matheesha Pathirana also made the squad despite injury ruling him out of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024).

Sri Lanka will start their campaign against South Africa on June 3 in New York and will hope to recapture glory after a decade.

<h2>Hasaranga to lead Sri Lanka</h2>

Once a powerhouse of world cricket, Sri Lanka&nbsp;have been on the decline&nbsp;in recent years but will aim to get back the lost glory under Hasaranga and Co.&nbsp;

The 15-member squad includes veteran star Angelo Matthews and Dasun Shanaka&nbsp;while&nbsp;Dunith Wellalage&nbsp;also&nbsp;gets the cut. Matthews is the lone survivor from the Sri Lanka squad that won the T20 World Cup&nbsp;in&nbsp;2014.&nbsp;

Hasaranga’s&nbsp;eligibility had earlier caused controversy as he was likely to miss the start of the tournament.

During Sri&nbsp;Lanka's&nbsp;defeat to Bangladesh on March&nbsp;18&nbsp;Hasaranga was handed demerit points for showing dissent against an umpiring decision. According to the ICC ruling, a player with eight demerit points could be&nbsp;handed&nbsp;a ban for two Tests, four ODIs or four T20Is, depending on which came first.

In this case, Hasaranga was entitled to serve his ban during the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA and could have missed up to four matches during the tournament.

However, the player and the board soon named Hasaranga in the Test squad, despite him having announced his retirement from the red-ball format.&nbsp;

The 15-member squad includes veteran star Angelo Matthews and Dasun Shanaka while Dunith Wellalage also gets the cut. Matthews is the lone survivor from the Sri Lanka squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2014. Hasaranga’s eligibility had earlier caused controversy as he was likely to miss the start of the tournament. During Sri Lanka's defeat to Bangladesh on March 18 Hasaranga was handed demerit points for showing dissent against an umpiring decision. According to the ICC ruling, a player with eight demerit points could be handed a ban for two Tests, four ODIs or four T20Is, depending on which came first. In this case, Hasaranga was entitled to serve his ban during the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA and could have missed up to four matches during the tournament. However, the player and the board soon named Hasaranga in the Test squad, despite him having announced his retirement from the red-ball format. As soon as he was registered for the Test series against Bangladesh, a two-match ban was triggered, clearing the slate of eight demerit points. T20 World Cup 2024: Wanindu Hasaranga leads Sri Lanka squad; injured CSK star Matheesha Pathirana included

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) will be without the services of their ace spinner Wanindu Hasaranga for the remainder of the IPL season, it has officially been confirmed.&nbsp;The spin-bowling all-rounder was initially supposed&nbsp; to join the SRH camp after the first few matches but the aggravation of his left-heel injury means he will miss the tournament.&nbsp;

According to a report in the Sunday Times (Sri Lanka), Hasaranga will travel to Dubai to meet a podiatrist for expert advice on managing the troubled heel. The procedure has been recommended by SLC's (Sri Lanka Cricket) physiotherapy department.&nbsp;

“He is not taking part in the IPL as he needs to do some rehabilitation after meeting the podiatrist,” SLC&nbsp;CEO Ashley de Silva was quoted as saying.

“There’s a swelling in the heel and he has been playing with injections. So he has decided to get this issue sorted out before the World Cup and informed us of his decision to skip the IPL this year.”

The news of Hasaranga missing out on the tournament comes when SRH face&nbsp;Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (Mar 31).&nbsp; While SRH have started the tournament decently, winning and losing one apiece, his absence would certainly be felt as the team had better balance with him in it.&nbsp;

IPL 2024: Blow to SRH as Wanindu Hasaranga gets ruled out of the tournament

Sunrisers Hyderabad are all set to miss the services of Sri Lanka's top spinner Wanindu Hasaranga for their upcoming matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as they try to claim glory for the first time since 2016. Sunrisers, who bought Hasaranga for $140,000 (INR 1.5 crore) in the December auctions, will be without the second-highest wicket-taker from the 2022 season. SRH started the IPL 2024 campaign on a losing note having lost a close match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Saturday (Mar 23).

<h2>SRH to miss Hasaranga&nbsp;</h2>

According to medical reports from Sri Lankan media, Hasaranga is suffering from chronic pain in left heel. The extent of the pain is still unknown which has forced the Sri Lankan to consult doctors overseas and will see him miss another week of action in the IPL 2024. If this is the case, he will miss matches against Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings. Considering all three teams made it to the playoffs of the IPL 2023, it will be a tough list of fixtures for SRH where they won’t be able to rely on one of the top spinners in modern times.

His availability is also a danger when SRH take on Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as a consequence of the above-mentioned fixtures. Interestingly, he had earlier made himself available for the two-match Test series against Bangladesh and returned from Test retirement.

His return to the Test side was a big matter of debate as it only triggered a two-match ban to relieve of the demerit points ahead of the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.

IPL 2024: Sunrisers Hyderabad's Wanindu Hasaranga to miss key matches due to chronic pain in left heel

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board has denied claims of exploitation of International Cricket Council (ICC) rules’ loopholes to keep Wanindu Hasaranga&nbsp;available&nbsp;for the upcoming T20 World Cup to be played in the West Indies and the USA. In an announcement made by the board on Wednesday (Mar 20), the SLC claimed that they had no role in bringing back Hasaranga in the Test format and it was the player who contacted them for the same. Hasaranga’s comeback into the Test squad immediately triggered a two-match Test ban which means that he will be able to play the&nbsp;international matches that follow, including the T20 World Cup.

"It was about two weeks ago that he told us he was open to playing Tests again," Mendis told ESPNcricinfo. "We know how it looks, but this decision was taken well before the final ODI."

Sri Lanka Cricket board denies exploiting ICC loopholes enabling Hasaranga to play in T20 WC

Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been suspended for two Tests, announced the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday (Mar 19). Hasaranga had come out of Test retirement to take part in the upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh but will be sitting out now. He was suspended for accumulating eight demerit points, including three handed to him in the recent ODI series against Bangladesh.

Hasaranga was found in breach of article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct in the third ODI of the three-match series against Bangladesh. The article refers to 'showing dissent at an Umpire's decision during an International Match.'

The spinner, in the 37th over of the match (3rd DOI), had snatched his cap from the umpire and showed frustration. Sri Lanka eventually lost the game by four wickets as Bangladesh took the series 2-1. Hasaranga was fined 50 per cent of his match fee apart from getting three demerit points.

Sri Lanka's T20 skipper was already at five demerit points after being handed three points to him in the T20I series against Afghanistan last month. As per the ICC, accumulating eight demerit points in a 24-month period gets converted to four suspension points which are enough for a player to get suspended for two Tests, four ODIs or T20Is, whatever comes first.&nbsp;

As a result, Hasaranga will not be featuring in the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh. Apart from him, Sri Lanka's ODI skipper Kusal Mendis was also handed three demerit points and a fine of 50 per cent match fee for a Level 2 offence.

Mendis, after the end of the third ODI against Bangladesh, had abused the umpires while shaking hands and breached article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Article 2.13 breached by Mendis pertains to 'Personal abuse of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire or Match Referee during an International Match.' It was Mendis' first offence in the 24-month period. Both the Lankan players accepted the sanctions handed by ICC match referee Andy Pycroft.

Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga banned from upcoming Tests against Bangladesh. Here's why

Sri Lanka's T20I captain Wanindu Hasaranga conjured up a masterplan to evade a ban that would have seen him miss out on four T20 World Cup games. Wion Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo gets you the details.

Wanindu Hasaranga exploits ICC loopholes | WION Sports

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended Sri Lanka T20I captain Wanindu Hasaranga for two matches for his outburst against on-field umpire Lyndon Hannibal during the third T20I against Afghanistan in Dambulla on February 21. Hasaranga is also fined 50% of his match fees and will miss the first two T20I games against Bangladesh next month.

The incident happened when Hannibal did not give an above-the-waist-height full toss a no-ball, irking the Sri Lankan camp, with Hasaranga letting his frustration out during the presser, saying such calls should have been avoided in international cricket.

Hasaranga went one step ahead by bashing the umpire for not being rightly suited for top-level cricket, urging him to find another job.

"That kind of thing shouldn't happen in an international match," Hasaranga said. "If it had been close [to waist height], that's not a problem. But a ball that's going so high… it would have hit the batsman's head if it had gone a little higher. If you can't see that, that umpire isn't suited to international cricket. It would be much better if he did another job."

Meanwhile, the hosts required 11 off the last three balls when this episode happened and eventually lost the game by three runs. They won the series 2-1.

Taking action against Hasaranga, the ICC, in its statement, stated that the all-rounder breached the code of conduct and accumulated five demerit points (three from this incident), resulting in his suspension clause getting activated.&nbsp;

"Hasaranga was found guilty of breaching article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to 'Personal abuse of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire or Match Referee during an International Match'," the ICC said in a statement.&nbsp;

"Hasaranga's accumulation of five demerit points (he got three for this infraction) results in a conversion to two suspension points. This means he will either get a ban for one Test match or two ODIs or T20Is, whichever comes first, for the player or player support personnel."

<h2>Gurbaz fined</h2>

Not only Hasaranga but Afghanistan batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz was also fined 15% of his match fees and slapped with a demerit point for disobeying an umpire's instruction during an international match."

Per ICC’s statement, Gurbaz's offence was "altering the grip of his bat on the field despite repeated warnings against doing so.”&nbsp;

Gurbaz's demerit-points tally now stands at two.

ICC suspends Wanindu Hasaranga for two matches for outburst against umpire

Sri Lanka T20I skipper Wanindu Hasaranga says that his team is one of top bowling sides in the world. His comments came on the eve of the first T20I of the three-match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. Both the sides will be playing six T20Is each before the T20 World Cup in June later this year and the current series will comprise three of their six matches. The T20 series kicks off on Saturday (Feb 17).

"If you look at world cricket, we're one of the best teams in terms of bowling outfits. If you look at the rankings, myself and Maheesh [Theekshana] are in the top 10. Dushmantha Chameera was unlucky with his injury, otherwise he'd also be here. But in his place we have Binura [Fernando] who has come in, and there's also Matheesha [Pathirana] and Nuwan Thushara. We know how good those two are. Dilshan Madushanka is also there.
