Russia on Friday (Feb 23rd) announced a significant expansion of the list of European Union officials and politicians banned from entering Russia. This comes in response to the latest round of sanctions by the bloc.

<h2>'Fruitless attempts'</h2>

In a statement the Russian foreign ministry called the European Union's latest sanctions "fruitless attempts to put pressure," and said that the prohibitions are a response to the "unfriendly actions."

"The European Union is continuing its fruitless attempts to put pressure on Russia through unilateral restrictive measures," it said.

"In response to these unfriendly actions, the Russian side has significantly expanded the list of representatives of European institutions and EU member states, who…are prohibited from entering the territory of our state."

As per a Reuters report quoting the Russian foreign ministry, the latest stop list includes representatives of law enforcement agencies and commercial organisations who provided military assistance to its neighbour, Ukraine. Additionally, representatives of European institutions involved in the prosecution of Russian officials, and those who gathered material to support the idea of confiscating Russian state assets feature on the said list.

<h2>EU's sanctions on Ukraine</h2>

On Wednesday (Feb 21st), EU member states approved the 13th package of Ukraine-related sanctions against Russia. These sanctions ban nearly 200 entities and individuals accused of helping Moscow procure weapons or of involvement in kidnapping Ukrainian children, a charge vehemently denied by Moscow.

However, no fresh measures were announced against specific economic sectors, reports Reuters citing unnamed EU diplomatic sources.

The Ukraine war appears&nbsp;to have taken a backseat in global perception as Israel-Hamas war started in the month of October last year. But this has not lessened the suffering of Ukrainians, effort of Ukrainian army to drive Russian army out and resolve of the latter to stand ground and repel Ukrainian attacks. The war continues to resemble a stalemate with neither side gaining decisively in the ongoing conflict. A major news related to war has come from the Ukrainian camp. There are media reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is unhappy with Ukraine army chief Valery Zaluzhny and is in a mind to replace him.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. After some major battlefield&nbsp;advances in the initial months of the conflict, Russian forces had to retreat from large swathes of Ukrainian land and there were some major gains for the Ukrainian side. Meanwhile, the Western nations, particularly led by the United States poured billions and billions of dollars in humanitarian as well as military help to Ukraine. Nations provided arms, ammunition and even tanks to Ukraine and this did help Ukrainian soldiers to be better equipped than their Russian adversaries. It was hence expected that Ukraine would launch a major counter-offensive and push Russians back.

Despite high anticipation, the decisive counter-offensive has not taken place. Excluding minor gains, the Ukrainian armed forces have not been able to push Russians back. The Russians remain dug in.

Multiple media reports now say that Zelensky now wants to replace army chief Zaluzhny and has already broached the subject with him.

Financial Times has reported that earlier this week, on Monday, Zelensky had a discussion with Zaluzhny on this matter and offered him another position in Ukraine's security apparatus. The four-star-general has reportedly refused to step down from the position of army chief and take up another post. Zelensky has reportedly told Zaluzhny that irrespective of his decision about taking the post being offered to him, he would be sacked as army chief.

<h2>The popular general</h2>

General Valery Zaluzhny remains popular in Ukraine as under him Ukrainian forces retook almost half of Russia-occupied regions in Ukraine in 2022. His assurances of major counteroffensive lifted morale of the Ukrainian people and projected an image globally that Ukraine was about to decisively fight back. This resulted in greater confidence among Western nations that helping Ukraine was indeed going to turn things around, helping the aid trickle.

<h2>So what's the feud between Zelensky and General Zaluzhny?</h2>

It is being reported that President Zelensky is not very happy with the situation of Ukraine army under General Zaluzhny, especially after the latter's promises of major counter-offensive were not fulfilled. The situation of Russia-Ukraine war has come to resemble World War I-style stagnant trench warfare with neither side making any decisive advance.

Although Ukraine received substantial help from the Western countries, Russia used the lull in hostilities to considerably fortify its position in Ukraine, as a result of which, its army has been able to repel Ukrainian attacks and even stage offensives elsewhere.

Zaluzhny was blamed by many in Ukraine's political circles for tactical mistakes.

The general has not come up with a plan for 2024. Al-Jazeera has even reported that Zelensky has, at times, bypassed the army in some decisions to manage the armed forces and the war.

Ukraine was not able to gain advantage of brief but major chaos on the Russian side due to the rebellion of Wagner Group forces which were instrumental in some of Russia's gains in Ukraine.

Also, with no signs of major Ukrainian success on the battlefield, prominent voices in the Western camp, including from within US lawmaking circles have started doubting continuing to spend billions of dollars to help Ukraine. US President Joe Biden himself had to support the continued aid to Ukraine. But with US Presidential Election 2024 slated to take place later this year, there is, at least in theory, uncertainty about Biden's continued presence in the Oval Office.

Explained | The feud between Zelensky and Ukraine Army chief he wants to sack

Ukrainian&nbsp;President Volodymyr Zelensky sounded a warning on Sunday, expressing concern over the potential decrease in aid from the United States to Kyiv and emphasised&nbsp;the decision would send a negative message.

Zelensky, in an interview with German national broadcaster ARD, also sounded an alarm about the looming threat of the Ukraine conflict spiralling into World War Three.

<h2>A bad signal &nbsp;</h2>

Amid US President Joe Biden grapplling&nbsp;with a Republican obstruction on additional support to Ukraine, Zelensky urged Germany to leverage its economic influence to encourage EU partners to enhance their contributions to Kyiv's battle against Russia.

Urging nations from Germany to the United States to stand by Ukraine in these critical times, he articulated the gravity of the situation. Zelensky, as per Reuters, asserted that a potential Russian strike on a NATO country could serve as the ominous start to the Third World War.

"It seems to me that the Chancellor (Olaf Scholz) is aware of this risk," he said.&nbsp;

The ongoing political dynamics in the United States, particularly the Republican opposition, have posed challenges to the continuation of aid to Ukraine. Biden's administration has prioritised supporting Ukraine, and US assistance has been crucial in helping the country resist a significant Russian force. However, the opposition Republicans have sought to halt these efforts, linking budget approvals to demands for stringent measures against illegal migration.

'Bad signal': Ukraine's Zelensky expresses concern over potential decrease in aid from US

Ukraine on Monday (Jan 8) came under a fresh wave of Russian missile attacks that struck near the front lines of fighting in the east, western as well as central parts of the country, said the officials.

The strikes claimed the lives of at least three and wounded dozens of others.

The latest barrage of hypersonic projectiles fired by Moscow comes less than a week after Kyiv cautioned that it only had sufficient ammunition to withstand a few more powerful attacks amid Russia's intense bombardment.

"The enemy launched dozens of missiles at peaceful cities and villages of Ukraine," Ukraine's deputy head of the presidency Oleksiy Kuleba said, adding that 33 were injured.

Some of the Ukrainian targets hit by the Russian projectiles were high-rise buildings and a shopping centre in President Volodymyr Zelensky's hometown Kryvyi Rig, claiming the life of at least one, said Kuleba.

"In Kryvyi Rig, there are many breakages in power grids, there are power outages, and electric transport does not work," he said.

Separate "explosions" in the western region of Khmelnytsky, far from the frontlines in the east, he said, killed one person.

<h2>Around 300 evacuated from Belgorod over Ukraine strikes, says Russia</h2>

Russia said that it has evacuated nearly 300 residents of Belgorod over strikes by Ukraine.

The governor of the Belgorod region, which is a city near the Ukrainian border, on Monday, released a statement saying that the ones evacuated have been moved to temporary shelter centres.

"Some 300 residents of Belgorod, who decided to temporarily evacuate, are at the moment being housed in temporary shelter centres in Stary Oskol, Gubkin and the Korochansky district" which are further from the border, Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said in a video posted on Telegram.

"Over the past 24 hours we received 1,300 requests to send Belgorod children to school camps away from the city, in other regions," he said.

The evacuation from Belgorod, which is less than 20 miles (32 kilometres) from the Ukrainian border, is so far the largest of a major Russian city ever since Moscow began its offensive against Kyiv in Feb 2022.

Ukraine launched strikes on the Russian city on Dec 30 claiming the lives of at least 25 people.

Strong wave of Russian strikes hits areas across Ukraine; 3 killed and dozens injured

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a resolute New Year's address on Sunday (Dec 31), pledged to unleash formidable "wrath" against Russian forces throughout 2024. The leader of the war-torn nation vowed this, undeterred by what he said were attempts to "undermine" support for Kyiv.

On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin's New Year's Eve address was notably scaled back compared to last year,&nbsp;and was also devoid of any mention of the conflict in Ukraine.

<h2>'Our real wrath'</h2>

Zelesnky's declaration, as per AFP, comes less than 72 hours after an aerial assault by Moscow on Ukrainian cities. The barrage of missiles and drones resulted in 39 casualties, marking&nbsp;one of the biggest aerial attacks since Russia invaded Ukraine.

In the televised address, Zelensky promised a substantial increase in Ukraine's military capabilities in the upcoming year.

"Next year, the enemy will feel the wrath of domestic production," he said. His televised address was accompanied by clips of Ukrainian artillery and fighter jets.

He said that the nation will bolster its arsenal with at least "a million" additional drones and F-16 fighter jets, delivered by Kyiv's Western allies.&nbsp;

"Our pilots are already mastering F-16 jets, and we will definitely see them in our skies," said the Ukrainian President, adding, "So that our enemies can certainly see what our real wrath is."

<h2>Third year of the Ukraine war</h2>

As the Ukraine war enters into its third calendar year — it began on Feb 24, 2022, with Putin announcing a "special military operation" into Ukraine — Zelensky implored Western allies to maintain steadfast support, especially in the face of mounting signs of war fatigue.

"The major result of the year, its main achievement: Ukraine has become stronger. Ukrainians have become stronger," said Zelensky as footage of cities under attack and Kyiv's meetings with&nbsp;western allies played.

"When, at the beginning of 2023 … we surmounted, without exaggeration, the most difficult winter in history. When we proved that Ukrainians are tougher than cold and darkness. Stronger than power outages and blackout threats."

"Ukrainians are stronger than any intrigues, any attempts to diminish global solidarity, to undermine the coalition of our allies," he said.

Despite receiving substantial support, Ukraine encountered difficulties in achieving a breakthrough during its 2023 counteroffensive against the invading Russian forces. Moscow, meanwhile, escalated pressure along the front lines, capturing the eastern town of Marinka in December and intensifying efforts to control Kupiansk in the northeast.

On the other hand, refraining from mentioning Ukraine by name, Russian President Putin in his New Year's speech said: "To everyone who is at a combat post, at the forefront of the fight for truth and justice: You are our heroes, our hearts are with you. We are proud of you, we admire your courage."

Kharkiv's regional military administration said Russia had "made about 10 strikes on the city" and that experts were still determining the types of weapons used.

No casualties were immediately reported in either city.

On Thursday, Russian forces shelled Vovchansk in the Kharkiv region, killing a 66-year-old woman and wounding one other.

Three women aged between 58 and 76 were wounded in an air strike on the village of Glushkivka, also in the Kharkiv region, police said.

<h2>The Pope and Ukraine</h2>

The Pope in his Christmas Day Message had called for an end to the multiple global conflicts, including the one in Ukraine. Before that, in November, renewing his persistent calls for an end to violence in Ukraine and the Middle East, he had stressed that "peace is possible" and that "we must not resign ourselves."

Additionally, as part of his peace efforts in Ukraine, the Pope has sent a special envoy, Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, to Kyiv, Moscow, Washington, and Beijing.

The Ukrainian leader, as per Reuters, has said that his nation's peace formula will next be discussed in Davos, Switzerland. However, he is yet to reveal the date.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky first announced his 10-point peace formula in November 2022, at a summit of the Group of 20 major economies. The plan calls for:

1. Radiation and nuclear safety, with a focus on Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia.

2. Food security, including a restoration of Ukraine's grain exports to the world's poorest nations.

3. Energy security, with a focus on protecting Ukraine's infrastructure that has been targeted by Russia and price restrictions on Russian energy resources.

4. 'All for all' release of prisoners and deportees, including war prisoners and children deported to Russia.

5. Restoring Ukraine's territorial integrity and Russia reaffirming it according to the UN Charter, which the peace plan says is "not up to negotiations".

6. Withdrawal of Russian troops and cessation of hostilities, including the restoration of Ukraine's state borders with Russia.

7. Justice, with the focus on the establishment of a special tribunal to prosecute Russian for war crimes it has allegedly committed.

8. Immediate protection of environment.

9. Prevention of escalation of conflict, and building mechanism to "prevent any chance of its repetition. For this it demands the set-up of security architecture in the Euro-Atlantic space, including guarantees for Ukraine.

10. Confirmation of the war's end, that comes with an official document signed by the involved parties.

Zelensky is yet to publicly endorse the proposal. Expressing his desire to hear more arguments in favour of mobilising additional personnel, he said, "This is a very serious number". As per David Arakhamia, the head of Zelensky's party in parliament, the bill was due to be introduced on Monday (Dec 25). He said that the government is working on the bill at the military's request. Taking to Telegram, he highlighted the necessity of providing solutions to the military's challenges and said: "The military needs a solution to its problems". (With inputs from agencies)

Referring to the potential negotiations, Zelensky&nbsp;said, "I don't see a request from Russia. I don't see it in their actions. I see only arrogance and murder in their rhetoric."&nbsp;

The Ukrainian president said that Ukraine's military had scored "a big victory" on the Black Sea, where Kyiv has launched successful strikes on Russian warships and secured maritime trading routes.&nbsp;

Zelensky said that everyone can appreciate that the Russian fleet was deprived of its "almost total dominance" in the Ukrainian Black Sea.&nbsp;He added that Moscow had tried to impose controls over "what we should do, what we should export, and so on".&nbsp;

Russia-Ukraine war: Zelensky says Trump presidency could have 'strong impact' on war

European Union (EU) member Hungary on Thursday (Dec 14) stalled an aid deal worth $54&nbsp;billion (50 billion euros) for Ukraine from the EU budget. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban put his foot down and delayed the deal until January next year.

Orban took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and shared the news, saying he had vetoed the deal.

"Summary of the nightshift: veto for the extra money to Ukraine, veto for the MFF (budget) review. We will come back to the issue next year in the European Council after proper preparation," Orban wrote on social media.

EU chief Charles Michel&nbsp;said leaders would return to the issue "early next year" after Orban's opposition.&nbsp;

"I don't want to go too much into the details because I want to work with colleagues in the days to come, in the weeks to come to prepare a summit that will take place next year, early next year," Michel said.

Orban tanking the deal came after the bloc opened membership talks for Ukraine. The war-ravaged nation has been desperate to join the EU, to consolidate the member nations in the war against Russia.

So far, Hungary under Prime Minister Viktor Orban had opposed opening the membership talks and called for the removal of the topic from the summit agenda.

<h2>Ukraine's bid to be an EU member: A Timeline</h2>

On February 28, 2022, just four days after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced an offensive on Ukraine, Kyiv applied for EU membership.

On June 23, 2022, the European Council "recognised Ukraine's European perspective and granted the country candidate status", according to the 2023 Enlargement Package&nbsp;issued by the European Union.

On 8 November 2023, as part of its Enlargement Package, the Commission published its report on Ukraine, recommending to open accession negotiations.

<h2>Ukraine as potential EU member: What does it mean?</h2>

Ukraine is continuing to face hurdles in clinching funding from both the United States and the EU to support its war against Russia. Even procedural progress at this point&nbsp;— after its failed counteroffensive and Russian belligerence on the frontline&nbsp;—&nbsp;on joining the bloc will boost morale in its bid to fight off Russia’s offensive.

But overall, the process to join the EU is lengthy and complicated. Croatia was the last country which joined the EU in 2013 and its accession process lasted ten years.

<h2>Why EU reopened accession negotiations with Ukraine?</h2>

In the 2023 enlargement communication, the European Commission said Ukraine had made substantial progress on addressing seven key reforms identified in 2022.

"The Commission considers that Ukraine sufficiently fulfils the criteria related to the stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and protection of minorities," the EC said.

The report found that the country had established a transparent pre-selection system for Constitutional Court judges and had reformed judicial governance bodies.

It said Ukraine had developed its track record of high-level corruption investigations and convictions, and that it had taken positive steps in a wider and systemic effort to address the influence of oligarchs.

But as recently as November 2023, Ukrainian judges have been accused of graft in a number of cases that have disputed the claims of judicial reforms in Ukraine.&nbsp;

On Nov 30,&nbsp;the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office accused four judges from the Kyiv Court of Appeal of graft totalling $35,000.&nbsp;

Biden meets Zelensky, says he has signed $200 million emergency aid drawdown

The Russia-Ukraine war has crossed into its 651st day, and Kyiv is struggling for funds.&nbsp;As the US Congress continues to ponder over the $60 billion aid proposal by President Joe Biden, on Tuesday, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the funding request failure means the country would be "responsible for Ukraine's defeat".&nbsp;

<h2>What Yellen said</h2>

On Tuesday, during a trip to Mexico City, Yellen told reporters that the funding - particularly for Ukraine's general government budget suppor was "utterly essential" and that it was a pre-condition to keep International Monetary Fund (IMF) support flowing to war-torn Ukraine.

"I've talked to members of Congress, my colleagues have. I think they understand this, that this is a dire situation and we can hold ourselves responsible for Ukraine's defeat if we don't manage to get this funding to Ukraine that's needed, and I'm including direct budget support here because that's utterly essential," said Yellen.

"Ukraine is just running out of money," she said.&nbsp;

"They’re spending more than every penny they're taking in, in tax revenue, on military salaries and defence, and they wouldn’t have any schools or hospital or first responders if not for the money we’re sending to them to support them."

This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff voiced a similar warning.

<h2>A 'big risk'</h2>

Also on Tuesday, Andriy Yermak said that the postponement of US assistance would create a "big risk" of Ukraine losing the war against Russia.

These remarks, as per Reuters, were some of the frankest yet by a senior Kyiv official.

He said that if the aid is postponed, "it gives the big risk that we can be in the same position to which we're located now."

"And of course, it makes this very high possibility impossible to continually liberate and give the big risk to lose this war," he added.

The Russia-Ukraine war has crossed into its 651st day, and Kyiv is struggling for funds. As the US Congress continues to ponder over the $60 billion aid proposal by President Joe Biden, on Tuesday, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the funding request failure means the country would be "responsible for Ukraine's defeat". What Yellen said On Tuesday, during a trip to Mexico City, Yellen told reporters that the funding - particularly for Ukraine's general government budget suppor was "utterly essential" and that it was a pre-condition to keep International Monetary Fund (IMF) support flowing to war-torn Ukraine. I think they understand this, that this is a dire situation and we can hold ourselves responsible for Ukraine's defeat if we don't manage to get this funding to Ukraine that's needed, and I'm including direct budget support here because that's utterly essential," said Yellen. "Ukraine is just running out of money," she said. "They’re spending more than every penny they're taking in, in tax revenue, on military salaries and defence, and they wouldn’t have any schools or hospital or first responders if not for the money we’re sending to them to support them." This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff voiced a similar warning. A 'big risk' Also on Tuesday, Andriy Yermak said that the postponement of US assistance would create a "big risk" of Ukraine losing the war against Russia. These remarks, as per Reuters, were some of the frankest yet by a senior Kyiv official. Also read | Russian President Vladimir Putin watches 'nuclear button' as he observes re-created explosion He said that if the aid is postponed, "it gives the big risk that we can be in the same position to which we're located now." Ukraine launches investigation into alleged Russian execution of surrendering Ukrainian soldiers

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday (Nov 20) that Washington's support for Kyiv was for the long haul. "The message that I bring you today, Mr President, is that the United States of America is with you, we will remain with you for the long haul," Austin told Zelensky as he paid a visit to Kyiv to reassure Ukraine on US support in its fight against Russia.

In a statement, the Pentagon said that Austin visited Ukraine to meet "with Ukrainian leaders and reinforce the staunch support of the United States for Ukraine's fight for freedom."

"He will also underscore the continued US commitment to providing Ukraine with the security assistance it needs to defend itself from Russian aggression," the statement added. This was Austin's second trip to Ukraine since Russia launched an offensive last year.

Austin also told Zelensky that under his leadership, Ukraine defended its sovereignty and has fought valiantly.&nbsp;

"You (Zelensky) have led the Ukrainian people to do things that were unimaginable to most people from the very beginning. And so we've seen grit, ingenuity. We've seen courage on the part of the Ukrainian people that has really impressed the world," he added.

Since the beginning of the conflict, the US has provided tens of billions of dollars in security aid for Ukraine and repeatedly pledged to back Kyiv for "as long as it takes."

However, hardline Republican lawmakers have opposed this assistance.

Till now, the US has been the biggest donor of military assistance to Kyiv, and a cut to American aid would be a major blow to Ukraine as it is preparing for the second winter of the war.

Last month, Austin and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged lawmakers to sustain support for Ukraine, with the US defence chief said that without Washington's support, Russian President Vladimir Putin would be successful.&nbsp;

Apart from the Ukraine, the US has also insisted that it can provide assistance to Israel in its intensifying conflict against Hamas.&nbsp;

Lawmaker Anton Tkachev has voiced concerns about alleged plans by the Russian government to effectively block all Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).&nbsp;

Tkachev argued that implementing a broad restriction on all VPNs would intensify pressure on Russians, restricting their access to everyday devices. The move, if enforced, could impact citizens' ability to use common household appliances that rely on internet connectivity, he said.

Russia as per Reuters put in place restrictions on access to certain Western social media platforms after President Vladimir Putin ordered the deployment of troops into Ukraine in February 2022.&nbsp;

Following that, the demand for VPN services experienced a significant surge. According to RIA, the Russian digital ministry has identified this circumvention of restrictions on specific information as a potential threat.

Previously, in 2017, Russia implemented a law mandating VPN technology providers to collaborate with Russian authorities, compelling them to restrict access to content banned by Russia. Failure to comply with this law could result in prohibition. However, despite these regulations, VPN services continue to be widely used in Russia.&nbsp;

Russia to ban VPN services 'identified as a threat'

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday (Nov 5) categorically denied there was a stalemate in the war with Russia, saying his country can win the war provided the Western allies continue to supply crucial arms.

"They thought they would checkmate us, but this didn’t happen," Zelensky told NBC in an interview.

He also contradicted the remarks made by Ukraine’s commander-in-chief of armed forces that the war had entered an impasse&nbsp;after 20 months of fierce fighting.&nbsp;

"I don’t think that this is a stalemate," Zelensky said.&nbsp;

Last week, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief of armed forces Valerii Zaluzhnyi told the Economist "there will most likely be no deep and beautiful breakthrough," despite the counteroffensive launched in June.&nbsp;

<h2>Zelensky Wants more military aid from US</h2>

He also reiterated his pleas to the US to continue to supply more weapons as the Israel-Hamas war continues to divert Washington’s attention.

The US has, so far, provided $75 billion in military, humanitarian and financial aid to Ukraine since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Reuters news agency reported citing two US officials on Thursday that the Biden administration plans to announce a $425 million military aid package for Ukraine, including counter-drone rockets and munitions.

But few hardline Republicans have continuously opposed regular assistance for Kyiv, stoking doubts over America’s more aid in future for Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president also hinted that the country is shifting its strategy and was hopeful of gaining desirable breakthroughs, which Kyiv has been unable to achieve ever since launching&nbsp;counteroperations.

<h2>Military coming up with different plans</h2>

"Our military are coming up with different plans, with different operations in order to move forward faster and to strike Russian Federation unexpectedly," he said in his "Meet the Press" appearance.

No stalemate in Russia-Ukraine war, we are changing strategy: Volodymyr Zelensky

Germany wants Ukraine to begin formal talks on joining the European Union (EU) by the end of the year.&nbsp;Speaking at a conference in Berlin, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Thursday said that she was confident that next month the EU would advance Kyiv's membership bid.

<h2>EU enlargement</h2>

Baerbock, as per a Reuters report, presented the prospect of the bloc's enlargement as a geo-strategic necessity.

She suggested that candidate nations should be given some of the benefits of an EU membership even before they fully enter the bloc.

The German minister said there was a need to plough ahead with "tedious" internal reforms so that it could function with 30-plus members and greater centralisation of power within the EU.&nbsp;

According to the Times, she proposed this could be done by stripping individual countries of their veto rights and simplification of the sprawling administrative apparatus — under which 27 member states are in charge of their own individual policy brief.

"We want to see Ukraine a member of our European Union," she said, adding, "The European Union has to be enlarged. That is the geo-political consequence of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine."

<h2>EU to decide soon</h2>

As per Reuters, the EU will soon reach a decision on the start of talks about Ukraine joining the bloc. They are expected to reach a decision about the beginning of the formal start of Kyiv's membership talks at the December 14-15 summit.

"I am convinced that the European Council in December is going to send out that signal," said the German Minister.

"However, an enlarged EU will only be stronger if we do what we have been so hesitant to do for so long - review and rethink the way in which our union functions," she added.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine 'optimistic'</h2>

AFP reports that speaking ahead of the conference in Berlin, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Kyiv was optimistic about its efforts to open EU membership talks this year.

"We are optimistic. We did a lot of reforms and we passed legislation necessary to meet, to implement the recommendations," said Kuleba.&nbsp;

"So we are looking forward to the presentation of this report and I have reasons to believe that it will pave the way to the decision of the European Council on opening accession talks with Ukraine."

Ukraine endures 'biggest Russian attack since start of the year' with over 100 settlements targeted

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the United States of stirring up the "deadly chaos" unfolding in the Middle East.

He has also charged the West and Ukraine of stirring up unrest inside Russia. This comes after anti-Israel protesters stormed the Makhachkala airport in Russia's predominantly Muslim Dagestan region.

<h2>Who's benefiting from the "deadly chaos"?</h2>

Speaking during a televised meeting with high-ranking members of his security council, Putin instigated that the US and Ukraine orchestrated the riot at the Russian airport via social media, and said, "The events in Makhachkala last night were instigated through social networks, not least from Ukraine, by the hands of agents of Western special services."

The Russian President claimed that there have been "attempts" to destabilise the Russian society.

Accusing the US of sowing instability in the Middle East, he questioned, "Who is organising the deadly chaos and who benefits from it today, in my opinion, has already become obvious… It is the current ruling elites of the US and their satellites who are the main beneficiaries of world instability."

Putin also said that in the wake&nbsp;to protect "interreligious harmony," Russian law enforcement needed to take "firm, timely and clear actions."

<h2>Old habits?</h2>

As per the news agency AFP, Russia regularly blames domestic unrest on external, usually Western forces.

Putin's allegations come after the Russian Foreign Ministry accused Ukraine of playing a "direct and key role" in the Makhachkala airport "provocation".

However, this accusation was labelled "absurd" by the US. Speaking to reporters on Monday, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said: "I've seen their comments about blaming Ukraine. That is absurd."

As per AFP, while the channel didn't explicitly mention the word "Jew," it made reference to "unclean" passengers. The channel was banned later.

Ukrainian family of 9, including two minors brutally slain by Russian soldiers

Ukraine's armed forces used recently acquired American long-range missiles against Russia for the first time on Tuesday (October 17). US President Joe Biden, who was previously hesitant to provide these weapons to Ukraine, ultimately authorised the covert delivery by the Pentagon in response to what they said were Ukraine's urgent needs on field against Russian offensive.&nbsp;

They were reportedly deployed to strike two air bases in territory now overtaken by Russia, causing significant damage, according to Ukrainian special operations forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to Washington for its support.

<h2>What does it mean?</h2>

The decision marks a shift in the Biden administration's approach, particularly as Ukraine grappled with a challenging counteroffensive in its southern and eastern regions.

While the impact of these missiles on the battlefield remains uncertain, officials believe they can effectively target key Russian bases that support troops in Ukraine. The delivery was conducted covertly due to concerns about potential attacks during shipment.

The decision to provide these long-range missiles marked a significant change, partly influenced by actions taken by Britain and France.

<h2>What are these long-range missiles?</h2>

These long-range missiles are known as ATACMS or Army Tactical Missile System and were designed during the end of the Cold War for deep-strike missions on priority enemy targets.

The ATACMS missiles provided to Ukraine contain cluster munitions, a type of weaponry banned by international agreements that the United States has not signed.&nbsp;

In July, the United States began supplying Ukraine with 155-millimetre&nbsp;artillery shells designed for destroying armoured vehicles and enemy soldiers.

These missiles have a range of 100 miles and can be launched from mobile platforms that can quickly relocate to avoid counterattacks.

Ukraine has reportedly pledged not to use these missiles within Russia's recognised borders.&nbsp;

Ukraine attacks Russian targets with missile system secretly given by the US

Vladimir Putin's arrival in Kyrgyzstan on Thursday marked his first trip abroad since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for him in March.

The Russian President is wanted over allegations of deportation of Ukrainian children. However, Kyrgyzstan is not a member of the ICC, and it is not bound by the court's ruling to arrest him.

<h2>Putin in Kyrgyzstan</h2>

Putin's arrival in Kyrgyzstan was reported by Russian news agencies TASS, Interfax, and RIA Novosti early on Thursday.&nbsp;

During the visit, he is scheduled to meet with Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Japarov and take part&nbsp;in a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Russian ally, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, and other regional leaders will also participate in the summit.

However, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has decided to skip the summit.

Notably, Putin has been relatively absent from international travel since the launch of Russia's Ukraine offensive in February 2022.&nbsp;

This year, he has only travelled to Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine. His last foreign visits to Belarus and Kyrgyzstan were in December of last year. However, as per AFP, Putin is planning future visits to North Korea and China.&nbsp;

<h2>ICC arrest warrant</h2>

Moscow has denounced the warrant as "illegal" and has equated the Russian President's potential arrest abroad to an act of war.&nbsp;

Despite that, Russia, in practice, has taken precautions to avoid Putin's arrest. This includes sending Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to represent the nation at a BRICS summit in ICC member South Africa in August.

Commenting on his absence from Johannesburg, Putin earlier this month said: "Why should I create some problems for our friends during an event?".

"If I come, a political show will start," he added.

The ICC's ruling and the Rome Statute — ratified by 123 nations requires member countries to adhere to ICC decisions, have closed the door to a large part of the globe to Putin, reports AFP.&nbsp;

Putin arrives in Kyrgyzstan for his first international trip since ICC arrest warrant

In a major boost to Ukraine's war effort against Russia, Britain and northern European allies of the United States unveiled a fresh military support initiative worth £100 million ($123 million) to bolster Kyiv's position in the ongoing conflict.

Funded by the UK-administered International Fund for Ukraine (IFU), it aims to assist Ukraine's armed forces in de-mining, vehicle maintenance, and safeguarding critical infrastructure.

The aid package, according to&nbsp;the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), will furnish equipment to help Ukrainian troops navigate minefields, bridge rivers and trenches, and provide heavy-duty plant vehicles to eliminate Russian non-explosive obstacles.

This announcement coincides with the finalisation of contracts related to a previously disclosed IFU package, which will provide over-air defence capabilities to Ukraine, including the MSI-DS Terrahawk Paladin platform designed to track and neutralise drones and protect critical infrastructure.

He added the new equipment pledged would "give Ukrainian soldiers what they need to breach Russia's deadly minefields".

The official announcement of this support was made in coordination with the UK's&nbsp;IFU partner nations during a Ukraine-focused meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Volodymyr Zelensky compares Hamas to Russia; Moscow suggests 'most reliable' solution to Israel conflict

US presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy has taken a strong stance against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. He argues that labelling Russian President Vladimir Putin as "bad" should not automatically imply that Ukraine is "good."&nbsp;

Ramaswamy condemns President Zelensky for several actions he deems concerning. Firstly, he accuses Zelensky of banning 11 opposition parties, which raises questions about the state of political freedom in Ukraine.

Secondly, he points out Zelensky's consolidation of media into a single state broadcaster, raising concerns about media independence.

<h2>Allegations of corruption</h2>

Another major criticism by Ramaswamy is Ukraine's "abysmal record on corruption." This issue threatens not only the country's stability but also its international reputation. Ramaswamy's concerns about corruption highlight the need for transparency and accountability within the Ukrainian government.

Ramaswamy brings up a controversial incident involving Zelensky. He mentions the Ukrainian president's presence in the Canadian Parliament where a Nazi veteran, Yaroslav Hunka, was honoured. This incident has raised eyebrows and questions about Zelensky's political judgement.

<h2>Financial demands and electoral threats</h2>

Ramaswamy criticizes Zelensky for demanding more financial support from the United States to hold elections. This financial dependence raises concerns about Ukraine's sovereignty and self-reliance. Additionally, Zelensky's threat not to hold regular elections without increased funding raises questions about democratic processes within the country.

Ramaswamy highlights the fact that Russian-speaking regions in Donbas have not participated in Ukrainian parliamentary elections for nearly a decade. This reveals a significant challenge in achieving national unity and representation in Ukraine.

His stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict is notable. He advocates for a resolution that involves Moscow retaining parts of the Donbas region and Ukraine refraining from joining NATO. Furthermore, he suggests that Russian President Vladimir Putin should exit his military alliance with China as part of ending the conflict.

Despite being a relatively young and politically inexperienced tech entrepreneur, Ramaswamy has gained attention in GOP primary polls. He has garnered support by challenging the status quo and offering unique perspectives on international relations.

While Ramaswamy has risen in GOP primary polls, he still trails behind former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who lead the race. Trump maintains a significant lead with 56 per cent support, leaving Ramaswamy at 7.3 per cent, according to a RealClearPolitics poll.

The Russia-Ukraine war has reached its 590th day. Amid the ongoing war, Ukraine has reportedly developed "invisibility cloaks" that will help hide the war-torn nation's snipers from Russian military thermal imagery cameras.

<h2>Invisibility cloaks: How will they work?</h2>

The coats called 'Brave 1', as per Mirror UK,&nbsp;will soak up heat, which means that the Russian thermal cameras will be unable to detect Ukrainian soldiers. Reportedly, these coats&nbsp;are also waterproof and lightweight.&nbsp;

As per the report, the newly supplied coats have been tested by the Ukraine special forces.&nbsp;

Ukraine's Deputy Minister for Innovation Mykhailo Fedorov called these coats a 'game changer' for Kyiv forces and said: "The cloak blocks the radiation of heat and makes the fighters invisible to the enemy. For example, it will be for snipers or Special Operations Forces that perform combat tasks."

"The invisibility cloak is just one of the developments that will help save the lives of our soldiers at the front. Now we need even more," he added.

During the course of the Russia-Ukraine war, Russian drones have spotted Kyiv's marksmen sneaking up on Moscow's forces. This detection has more often than not landed Ukrainian snipers in grave danger.

This development comes as Ukraine on Thursday (5th October) announced that its troops have made headway in the eastern theatre of their counteroffensive operation against aggressor Russia. As per Reuters, Kyiv forces, however, said that they were under pressure further north.

"The most difficult area is the Lyman-Kupiansk sector," said Ilia Yevlash, spokesperson for Ukraine's eastern group of forces.

"The intensity of assaults there has increased … The enemy has chosen a new point - Makiivka - and is directing all its main efforts into this direction. Of course, we are also repulsing enemy attacks and inflicting damage on forces and equipment."

Recent days have also seen Western nations criticise Ukraine's counteroffensive strategy. While President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged that it is proceeding more slowly than the military would have liked, he has dismissed Western criticism.
