We were in the research stages, and I was just talking about the man because I find Sam Manekshaw extremely inspiring and fascinating as a human being, and I am in complete awe of him. So, that interaction was only so much with Vicky Kaushal.”</p>

<p>Alia Bhatt is collaborating with her <em>Gangubai Kathiawadi</em> director Sanjay Leela Bhansali again. On Tuesday, the actress shared an announcement post of her new film with Bhansali titled <em>Love and War. </em>The film co-stars her husband, actor Ranbir Kapoor and actor Vicky Kaushal.&nbsp;<br />

This will be Ranbir Kapoor's second collaboration with Bhansali and first for Vicky.&nbsp;<br />

The genre and details of the film featuring the three stars are not yet officially disclosed, besides terming it an epic drama. The Ranbir-Alia-Vicky starrer will go on floors in a few months and will be released on Christmas 2025.</p>

He also made Sanju- a biopic on controversial actor Sanjay Dutt and slyly blamed tarnishing the man's image to the media. Hirani is known to create a world that simplifies grave issues, puts a smile on the viewer's face and effectively drives home a point.&nbsp;</p>

Pannu, Grover and Kochhar are splendid as the three buffoons desperate to move to London. Pannu and SRK's romance is slightly underwhelming and only shines in the song<em> 'Lut Put Gaya'</em>. Khan somehow takes a step back or perhaps it's the story that makes all other characters stand out more than Hardy. One can't comprehend why Hardy makes so much effort to help the three- considering he has not known them for long.&nbsp;<br />

And when the writers feel that the story needs a bit of sprucing, they punctuate it with some scenes of his family life - him meeting his future wife (Sanya Malhotra), them becoming a family and his wife perpetually being worried about his well-being.</p>

<p>While the events and anecdotes are all there, the writing never elevates the narrative which poses as the major backdraw of Sam Bahadur.</p>

<h2>What does not work</h2>

<p>The writing is non-linear and almost highlights the events in Sam Maneckshaw's life like bullet points. In that sense, it lacks the thrills of a war movie. The first half, especially, is a terrible&nbsp;drab and almost like a boring history lesson. Those who have studied and loved history may find some of the portions of the film interesting. It does show the architects of modern India come together to build India as a nation. From Nehru, Sardar Patel, VK Krishna Menon and eventually Indira Gandhi. And how Maneckshaw- with changing leadership at the centre- proved to be an able commander and advisor to the leaders over the years. But not everyone has a palate for bookish history lessons no matter who is playing the iconic leaders on screen and so it is the responsibility of the writers to make the narrative engaging. Unfortunately, Sam Bahadur falters ever so often. This, despite the fact that Kaushal looms large on screen with his exceptional performance.</p>

<h2>The performances</h2>

<p>Kaushal is great. He has done biopics earlier. In one he had a supporting role, (Sanju) yet managed to steal the show. In another, as the protagonist ( Sardar Udham) he delivered a spellbinding act. In Sam Bahadur too, Kaushal transforms into the legendary war hero and delivers an earnest performance. But it is only he&nbsp;who seems to do his job well. Fatima Sana Sheikh plays former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and shares a considerable screen space with Kaushal. The scenes featuring Maneckshaw- and Gandhi should have ideally been crackling. Both&nbsp;strong-headed leaders who took the risk of fighting a war that was never theirs to begin with and yet emerged victorious but Fatima never gets the desired lines, neither is she able to bring out the spark of Mrs Gandhi's personality well. Instead, she seems to be playing a very subdued version of a feisty lady.</p>

<p>The other leading lady Sanya Malhotra also gets very limited screen time and so is unable to leave a lasting impact. Sure she is convincing in her role as the wife of the Army veteran, but there is little scope for her to do anything extraordinary on screen. Similarly, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub, as Yahya Khan also gets very limited scope to really perform to his utmost potential.</p>

And how Maneckshaw- with changing leadership at the centre- proved to be an able commander and advisor to the leaders over the years. But not everyone has a palate for bookish history lessons no matter who is playing the iconic leaders on screen and so it is the responsibility of the writers to make the narrative engaging. Unfortunately, Sam Bahadur falters ever so often. This, despite the fact that Kaushal looms large on screen with his exceptional performance. The performances Kaushal is great. He has done biopics earlier. In one he had a supporting role, (Sanju) yet managed to steal the show. In another, as the protagonist ( Sardar Udham) he delivered a spellbinding act. In Sam Bahadur too, Kaushal transforms into the legendary war hero and delivers an earnest performance. But it is only he who seems to do his job well. Fatima Sana Sheikh plays former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and shares a considerable screen space with Kaushal. The scenes featuring Maneckshaw- and Gandhi should have ideally been crackling. Both strong-headed leaders who took the risk of fighting a war that was never theirs to begin with and yet emerged victorious but Fatima never gets the desired lines, neither is she able to bring out the spark of Mrs Gandhi's personality well. Instead, she seems to be playing a very subdued version of a feisty lady. The other leading lady Sanya Malhotra also gets very limited screen time and so is unable to leave a lasting impact. Sure she is convincing in her role as the wife of the Army veteran, but there is little scope for her to do anything extraordinary on screen. Similarly, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub, as Yahya Khan also gets very limited scope to really perform to his utmost potential. Moments where Sam went to motivate his soldiers at the eastern front, a song to celebrate and showcase the different units that make the mighty Indian army truly stand out are special. The film also uses a lot of real-life footage from that time to give it a more authentic feel. Sam Bahadur is well intended. It has Vicky Kaushal delivering an earnest performance but drab writing makes the film a boring history lesson that's not meant for everyone.

A tried and tested trope that has worked in several films. But 112-minute long film, helmed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, never really manages to create an impact despite a well-intended script and a credible cast.&nbsp;<br />

Vicky Kaushal plays Ved Vyas Tripathi aka Bhajan Kumar, a gifted singer who belongs to a family of Hindu priests. Ved is part of a large joint family where his father Siyaram Tripathi (Kumud Mishra) is one of the most respected priests of the town they live in (fictitious town Balrampur). Things are mostly hunky dory for Ved who is a local star thanks to his family's clout and his gifted voice. He and his father are envied by rival priest Mishra (Yashpal Sharma) and his son who are constantly engaged in a war of upmanship with Ved's family.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Things turn awry when one fine day an anonymous letter lands up at the Tripathi household which claims that Ved is not really related to the family by blood and was born to a Muslim family. It was at his birth that someone had changed his birth certificate to make him Siyaram's son.&nbsp;<br />

In a devout Hindu family, which treats its son as a prince, this information changes dynamics. And so Ved's uncle (Manoj Pahwa) advises him to sit out his next music performance in order to control the rumours around his lineage. Ved though is hurt and decides to walk out and start living in a Muslim family only to realise a thing or two about the community which he has been taught to loathe since birth.&nbsp;<br />

On paper, the script may have held a lot of potential but Acharya who also serves as the writer of the film implements it half-heartedly. The film starts off in a light way, meanders through some inane plot points and then lands heavily on drama. By the end, it becomes a preachy story about communal harmony that doesn't offer anything that has not been told already.&nbsp;<br />

The film has Vicky Kaushal delivering an earnest performance as Ved Vyas. Kaushal is a talented actor and has proved his mettle in several films. He attempts to take the film forward and his comic timing is perfect. The scenes where he tries hard to become Muslim and imbibe the community culture and language are genuinely funny. But these moments are few and far between. Actors like Manoj Pahwa, Yashpal Sharma, and Kumud Mishra are completely wasted in the film. Manushi Chhillar plays Kaushal's love interest and has limited screen time - making her role almost obsolete in the larger picture.&nbsp;<br />

Films based in small-town India have been explored by YRF successfully in the past. <em>Dum Lagake Haisha, Shuddh Desi Romance</em> are just some of the films that were set in north Indian small towns. <em>The Great Indian Family</em> too falls in the same category and takes up a pertinent issue, dresses it up in a dramedy and presents it to the audience with a good cast in tow, yet it fails to create an impact.&nbsp;<br />

“All the awards that we have won for the film are shared by the team. We as a team, from producer Ronnie Lahiri to actor Vicky Kaushal, have decided to dedicate this award to Irrfan Khan,” he said.&nbsp;<br />

Irrfan was the initial choice for the film, but the actor died in 2020, and Vicky Kaushal stepped in to play the part of the freedom fighter in the film.<br />

A simple story indeed, but Laxman Utekar's latest film <em>Zara Hatke Zara Bachke</em> unnecessarily complicates a simple love story of a married couple wanting some privacy. It tries to explore the problems of modern marriages in India, where couples try to strike a balance between attending to familial duties and maintaining their privacy in marriage - but the execution of the plot is so over the top that the result is a mediocre affair.&nbsp;<br />

Kapil (Vicky Kaushal) and Saumya (Sara Ali Khan) have been married for two years. In an inter-caste marriage, they and their families are poles apart. She is a teacher, earns more than her husband and is aspirational. He is a yoga instructor, calculative and puts his wife's happiness first. The couple desire&nbsp; privacy, which is hard to get in an overcrowded small flat filled with nosy relatives and irrational parents. And so they decide to buy their own home - a space that they can call their own.</p>

<p>With limited money, they are unable to afford a luxury flat in an upcoming swanky society. While Kapil is okay to wait it out, Saumya grows impatient and wants to apply under a government scheme that enables the less fortunate to own flats at affordable rates. The catch is that the scheme is applicable to those who cannot afford to own a house due to hefty loans.<br />

On the advice of an&nbsp;agent Bhagwaan Das (Inaamulhaq), Kapil and Saumya stage a divorce in order for Saumya to apply and get a flat of their dreams under the scheme as a single woman with limited income.&nbsp;</p>

Some scenes stand out, some lines make you laugh even but the overall narrative is sluggish and you often wonder while watching why the protagonists are so over the top with their emotions all the time.</p>

You will have the leads playing flawed characters who want to strive for a better life but are crippled by conventions and stereotypes. These&nbsp;films try to address a pertinent issue plaguing society- mostly with the help of humour. Most of these films have quirky supporting characters who stand out in some scenes with their buffoonery. <em>Zara Hatke Zara Bachke</em> uses the same tropes- its like watching an Ayushmann Khurrana film but without him in it.&nbsp;<br />

There is a nosy aunt, who minds other's business more than her own. There is a 'cool' father-in-law who overshares too much about his life whenever he is drunk, a loser best friend who always has the couple's back, a comical conman - characters who have become staples of such films over the years. <em>Zara Hatke Zara Bachke</em> in that sense does not offer anything new.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The film however tries to talk of how the Indian middle class works supremely hard all their lives to build a home. From budget eating-outs to saving on petrol whenever possible, an average middle-class family has to compromise all their lives to afford a space of their own and sometimes, despite the hustle, fail to find their desired home as real estate prices across tier-two cities too shoot up each year.&nbsp;</p>

The premise is well-intended, but it fails at the execution level. When you have a credible actor like Vicky Kaushal leading the show, you can be rest assured that he would do a good job. Kaushal delivers to even a half-baked story, but there are moments where the actor really can't salvage a poorly written script. A man who made a splendid debut with <em>Masaan</em>, and proved his mettle in films like <em>Uri</em> and <em>Raazi</em>, is wasted in a role that could have easily been played by any other actor. The script does not justify Kaushal's talent as an actor.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Sara Ali Khan, on the other hand, struggles in certain scenes. Khan plays a feisty, ambitious woman who knows how to have her way. It is an inconsistent performance by the young star. She shows spark in certain scenes but her interpretation of the character seems slightly skewed. She has played a far more complex character in <em>Atrangi Re </em>better than how she plays Saumya in <em>Zara Hatke Zara Bachke.&nbsp;</em><br />
<br />
The confrontation scenes between Kaushal and Khan are not balanced. Khan overacts in those portions while Kaushal holds his own and appears far more natural. His reactions look more organic to the situation and Khan's, very rehearsed. Quite an eyesore!<br />

Actors like Inaamulhaq, Sushmita Mukherjee, Neeraj Sood, Rakesh Bedi, and Sharib Hashmi deliver to their parts well, but have limited screen time and are marred by a poorly written script.&nbsp;<br />

<em>Zara Hatke Zara Bachke</em> suffers due to an overtly dramatic plot- a story that would have been befitting for a good <em>Saas-Bahu</em> drama on the small screen. The audience has made it very simple, that humein picture acchhi lagni chaahiye (we should like the film). You see a Bhool Bhulaiya (2), KGF (2) or RRR, Drishyam (2), none of them fall in the same box, they’re neither the same language, genre nor the scale, they didn’t even have the same marketing plan."</p>
