US President Donald Trump’s administration has proposed a new rule, reversing a Biden-era policy, that could make it harder for some immigrants to obtain a green card if they use government benefits like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid or other health and social services. The new proposal, published in the Federal Register on Wednesday, was released by the Department of Homeland Security earlier this week.“Rescission would restore broader discretion to evaluate all pertinent facts and align with long-standing policy that aliens in the United States should be self-reliant and government benefits should not incentivize immigration,” the proposal states, as quoted by NPR.The Trump administration and Republicans have alleged rampant fraud in immigrants’ use of social safety net programs. Critics have argued that the recent broad scope proposal is too vague and could disincentivise the use of the benefits by immigrants who require them and are eligible for them. Also read | ‘Communist coming to White House’: Karoline Leavitt takes a dig at Mamdani ahead of Trump meetPeople without legal status do not have access to public benefits like SNAP, Medicaid and the healthcare marketplace. Meanwhile, some courts have been forced to use emergency funds to keep running, but warned that operations may be affected soon. The government shutdown stems from Congress’s failure to approve a new funding package before the September 30 deadline. This has caused several federal departments to halt operations, affecting millions of citizens.
Shutdown impacts flight operations
The situation has also impacted flight operations in the US, leading to significant delays and cancellations of flights. US officials on Wednesday said that the scheduled capacity for flights was being cut by 10 per cent from Friday (Nov 7) in 40 busy air traffic locations due to staffing woes caused by the government shutdown.“You’ll see mass cancellations, and you may see us close certain parts of the airspace, because we just cannot manage it because we don’t have the air traffic controllers,” US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (Oct 29) announced the successful testing of a nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered underwater drone, despite US President Donald Trump’s warning. This was the second test of a new nuclear weapons system in just a few days. Earlier on Sunday (Oct 26), Putin announced the test of another advanced nuclear-capable weapon -- the Burevestnik cruise missile that has an “unlimited range”. Trump said the move was not “appropriate.”“Yesterday, another test was conducted for another prospective system – the unmanned underwater device ‘Poseidon,’ also equipped with a nuclear power unit,” Putin said in a televised statement while visiting a military hospital treating Russian soldiers wounded in Ukraine.

What is Poseidon?
Poseidon, the drone torpedo, can travel at a faster speed than conventional submarines and reach any continent in the world, said Putin, adding that there was “no way to intercept” it. The Russian leader added that Poseidon’s speed and diving depth were unmatched in the world and that “it is unlikely that anything similar will appear in the near future.”The weapon can operate at a depth of over one kilometre (0.6 mile) and travel at speeds of up to 70 knots, all while remaining undetected, news agency TASS reported, citing a source in the Russian military-industrial complex. The device is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead of up to two megatons. Both Poseidon and Burevestnik were announced by Putin first in a fiery anti-Western speech in 2018. Poseidon’s first test was also conducted in the same year.
What did Trump say?
Following Sunday’s cruise missile test, Trump called on Putin to focus on ending the war in Ukraine instead.“He ought to get the war (in Ukraine) ended. A war that should have taken one week is now soon in its fourth year. That’s what he ought to do instead of testing missiles,” Trump said.Last week, Trump cancelled a planned summit with Putin in Budapest over the Russian leader’s unwillingness to end the conflict. Since returning to the White House in January for his second term, the US president has been making efforts to secure a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. However, the talks have still not yielded any progress towards ending the war, making him show frustration and disappointment towards Putin, who has rejected global calls for a ceasefire.

On Monday (October 27), US President Donald Trump's legal team submitted their long-awaited appeal of the Manhattan criminal case that resulted in his felony conviction for falsifying business records. The lawyers restated arguments made by Trump and his defense team throughout his trial in spring 2024, insisting the case should never have been brought and urging the presiding judge’s recusal due to previous political donations to Democratic causes. They also cited a 2024 Supreme Court ruling regarding presidential immunity, arguing that it could potentially impact the New York case. This decision, though tied to another of Trump’s legal matters, was referenced as grounds for overturning the conviction. Many of these same claims were previously dismissed during the trial. "This case should never have gone to trial, let alone led to a guilty verdict,” said Trump’s attorneys, led by Robert Giuffra Jr., in a detailed 96-page document. Trump’s appeal is one part of his broader strategy to reverse the felony conviction, which involves 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection with the hush money payments to Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress. Prosecutors argued that Trump, through his lawyer Michael Cohen, paid Daniels $130,000 during the 2016 presidential campaign to silence her allegations of an affair. US President Donald Trump on Monday (Oct 27) said that Argentina’s President Javier Milei has a “lot of help” from the United States in his party’s landslide victory in the midterm elections. Trump’s remarks come after Milei’s La Libertad Avanza (LLA) party secured a win in Sunday’s polls, rebounding from a series of setbacks with 40.7 per cent of the votes. The Trump administration had earlier offered a bailout potentially worth $40 billion to the country but warned it could reconsider support if Milei did not perform well.Speaking on a trip to Asia, Trump hailed Milei’s win, calling it an unexpectedly “big win” and saying that it was “a great thing.”“He had a lot of help from us. He had a lot of help. I gave him an endorsement, a very strong endorsement,” Trump said aboard Air Force One. He also praised his top officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who was overseeing the financial assistance to Argentina.“We are sticking with a lot of the countries in South America. We focus very much on South America,” Trump said. Ahead of the voting in Argentina, Trump signed $20 billion currency swap to support Milei. He also proposed a $20 billion debt investment facility.“We’ve made a lot of money based on that election, because the bonds have gone up. Their whole debt rating has gone up,” Trump said, but added that the US was “not in that for the money, per se.” Speaking to reporters, Bessent described the assistance as a “bridge” to help Milei’s economic project.“He’s working against 100 years of bad policies,” he said. “He’s gonna break them thanks to support from the United States.”

US President Donald Trump reaffirmed on Tuesday (October 21) that the US will proceed with imposing a staggering 155% tariff on Chinese imports starting November 1. This decision comes despite Trump's desire to maintain cordial relations with Beijing. In a response to a query from news agency ANI about tariffs on China due to its continued oil trade with Russia, Trump said, "Starting November 1, China will face a 155% tariff, and I don’t think it will be sustainable for them." Although Trump expressed a personal wish for friendly relations with China, he pointed out that years of unfavourable economic deals have forced the US to adopt a stronger stance. “I want to be friendly with China, but they’ve been very aggressive in trade, and past US leaders allowed them to take advantage of us," he said. Also Read: Who’s contributing to Trump's $250M White House ballroom, and why? Trump highlighted that his previous trade agreements with the European Union, Japan, and South Korea, which involved tariffs, were crucial for ‘national security’. He emphasised that these deals had generated billions in revenue for the US, which could now be used to reduce the national debt. This move represents a broader strategy of ‘secondary tariffs’ against countries indirectly supporting Russia’s war effort in Ukraine, through their energy ties. While similar measures targeted India’s Russian oil imports, the new tariffs indicate a shift toward China, the largest importer of Russian crude. Additionally, in a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed plans for a further 100% tariff on Chinese goods, to be added on top of existing tariffs, starting November 1. He described this as a response to China's ‘extraordinarily aggressive’ trade actions and their ‘hostile’ letter to the world. Furthermore, Trump announced that the US will impose export controls on critical software from the same date. The president claimed that China’s stance was a deliberate plan devised over years and described it as a breach of international trade norms.

Trump doubles down on tariffs, plans 155% on Chinese goods starting November 1

Trump highlighted that his previous trade agreements with the European Union, Japan, and South Korea, which involved tariffs, were crucial for ‘national security’. He emphasised that these deals had generated billions in revenue for the US, which could now be used to reduce the national debt. Construction has started on the White House's new $250 million ballroom, a lavish 90,000 square-foot venue that will replace portions of the East Wing. While the project is officially being funded by private donors, President Trump has said he will personally cover a significant part of the cost, with some donors reportedly willing to contribute up to $20 million each. US President Donald Trump has done it again. In the spotlight for his historic Israel-Gaza ceasefire, his remarks at the peace summit in Egypt have garnered attention, but for all the wrong reasons. In what is being termed as grossly sexist, Trump called Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni a ‘beautiful woman’ and even went on to say that calling a woman beautiful means the end of one’s political career in the US.
What happened?
During the address on the ceasefire, in a cringe-worthy moment that one assumes Trump knew would be slammed, he said, “she's a beautiful young woman. Now, if you used the word 'beautiful' in the United States about a woman, that's the end of your political career. But I'll take my chances. You don't mind being called beautiful, right? Because you are,” while Meloni quietly smiled, flanked by senior world leaders.

US President Donald Trump calls Italian PM #GiorgiaMeloni 'a beautiful young woman' at the Gaza Peace Summit in Egypt. pic.twitter.com/RY2nwhg92n— WION (@WIONews) October 14, 2025

Now the problem is not just about what Trump said, it is that a man on a global stage can publicly extol another head of state being ‘beautiful’ without any repercussions, but rather emboldened with laughter and smiles. This is a dangerous trend that is rightly being called out. While Trump’s remarks were the most blatant, Meloni also received unsolicited advice from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In a clip that went viral, he is heard saying, "I saw you coming down from the plane. You look great. But I have to make you stop smoking,” to a visibly uncomfortable Meloni. Every woman reading this can relate to those moments when men give them unwarranted advice about their lives without ever realising that it is none of their business. Everyone knows that smoking is harmful, but pointing this out in front of the international media is hardly the right thing to do.
Meloni-Modi and Misogyny
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Meloni are frequently the butt of memes on the internet as being India’s ‘power couple.’ While some of them are lighthearted, many on the internet now refer to Meloni as India’s ‘bhabhi’ or sister-in-law and even slam her when she interacts with other male leaders for allegedly ‘avoiding Modi.’

This trend to make romantic assumptions reminds one of high school boys scribbling ‘FLAMES’ on the back of notebooks, hoping that their crush notices them. The only difference is that the collective ‘crush’ here is a global leader and not a seventh-grader with pigtails. Sadly, Meloni is not alone.
From ‘Angry’ Hillary Clinton to Partying Marin
Former Finland Prime Minister Sana Marin came under fire in 2022 when a video of her partying and dancing with her friends drew sharp derision about her competence. In a public statement, Marin later condemned these remarks as sexist and claimed that she had a right to enjoy without public scrutiny. But the internet and her critics were quick to deem her unfit for public office, as if having a personal life is somehow not allowed for politicians.

A new video of Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s “party scandal” appeared in Finland today. Seiska writes that Marin, who is married and has been in that relationship for 18 years, was seen in many questionable situations. Even former US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has not been spared. The leader faced near constant sexism during her 2016 US Presidential campaign. From looking ‘too angry’ to always ‘wearing dark colours,’ Clinton was frequently reduced to her looks and appearance. A conservative news commentator even went so far as to say that “when Hillary Clinton shows up on TV, I inadvertently cross my legs.”Assumptions about the moral character of women if they party without guilt or smile too little are symptomatic of a mindset that belongs in times when women were seen as property and not people, when they did not have political rights, and men controlled their lives. Luckily, we are not in those times anymore, but some of us seem to be regressing rapidly.
‘Khaki underwear’ to ‘beautiful South Indian bodies’
Indian politics is no different when it comes to crass remarks against women leaders. In 2019, former MP Azam Khan made headlines after he made personal remarks about colleague Jaya Prada. “It took you 17 years to identify her real face, but I got to know in 17 days that she wears khaki underwear,” said Khan while on the campaign trail. In 2015, former MP Sharad Yadav also drew derision for saying that “South Indian women are beautiful and so are their bodies... women in our parts [north India] are not so beautiful.” Discussions about women's lingerie and ‘beautiful bodies’ have no place in civil society and certainly not in a country’s political discourse. It signifies a mind that looks at women as merely sexual objects to be objectified to score cheap political points.
Looking beyond pretty faces
While sexism is bad enough anywhere, it is especially detrimental in the political arena. Consider the Giorgia Meloni case. The Italian PM, referred to as a ‘beautiful woman’ by Trump, is a divisive figure in her home country. Fratelli d’Italia, the party she leads, is often associated with far-right ideologies, and her stance on migration and LGBTQIA+ issues is highly conservative. The country, under her regime, is even considering a complete ban on hijabs and other face coverings. She is also frequently criticised for a stagnant Italian economy, with a 2025 survey by Dire-Tecné institute showing that 50.1% of Italians are disappointed by her administration. But by reducing her to just a pretty face and a beautiful woman, we are missing the larger discourse of holding her accountable for 60 million people.
Woeful Representation of Women in Politics
In 2025, there are only 29 female heads of state, with the lion’s share of key positions like President and Prime Minister going to men. In India, just 14.7% of the upper and lower houses of the parliament are held by women, signalling a wide disparity between the genders. Add sexism to the mix, and the chances of women not opting for politics as a career skyrocket.
Need for restraint and mature discourse
Strangely, if the tables were turned, people wouldn’t be this cavalier about personal remarks. If women publicly reduced men to their ‘orange skin tones’ or balding hairlines, it would lead to uproar about ruining the dignity of the offices they hold and even calls for resignations. Why is the outrage then selective? Are we inherently biased towards men and ignore open sexism as ‘mistakes’ and ‘banter ’? The evidence certainly points to this.Women are not mere figureheads to be paraded in summits for their looks but real leaders to be heard and judged for their actions. It is time that the global polity acknowledges its big sexism problem and strives to do better.

From Donald Trump calling Italian PM Meloni a ‘beautiful woman’ to former Finnish PM Marin being slammed for partying, global politics has a long history of casual sexism. WION’s Akul Baiju examines this ecosystem of misogyny.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday (Oct 12) said that the United States does not want to “hurt” China but “help”. He made the remarks days after slapping an additional 100 per cent tariffs on Beijing on Friday (Oct 10). Trump cited China’s sweeping export controls reason behind the move, calling Beijing’s decisions unprecedented and global in impact. The tariffs are expected to take effect starting on November 1.“Don’t worry about China, it will all be fine! Highly respected President Xi just had a bad moment. He doesn’t want Depression for his country, and neither do I. The U.S.A. wants to help China, not hurt it!!! President DJT,” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform.Trump’s remarks come after US Vice President JD Vance warned of escalating tensions with China, urging Beijing to “choose the path of reason” as the trade war between the two countries continues.“We’re going to find out a lot in the weeks to come about whether China wants to start a trade war with us or whether they actually want to be reasonable,” Vance told Fox News on Sunday. Before announcing sweeping tariffs on China, Trump accused Beijing of “sinister and hostile” moves, warning that he could respond with a “massive increase of tariffs” on Chinese goods entering the US.“Some very strange things are happening in China! They are becoming very hostile, and sending letters to Countries throughout the world, that they want to impose export controls on each and every element of production having to do with Rare Earths, and virtually anything else they can think of, even if it’s not manufactured in China,” Trump had said.“Nobody has ever seen anything like this but, essentially, it would ‘clog’ the markets, and make life difficult for virtually every country in the world, especially for China,” he added.
