US President Donald Trump says he is weighing further military strikes against Iran, raising the prospect of another escalation in the US-Iran conflict. The statement comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the possibility of fresh attacks keeping the region on edge. Will the US launch another military operation, or is there still room for diplomacy?

US President Donald Trump, following his meeting with the national security team on Thursday, said that a decision on whether to resume an all-out war on Iran will be coming soon. Iran has turned its streets into a stage for anti-American demonstrations, with a mock execution of US President Donald Trump and the burning of a giant banner featuring top US and Israeli leaders drawing attention in Tehran. The displays come days after Democrats seized control of both chambers of Congress in the November 3 US midterm elections, dealing a major blow to Trump’s Republican Party. The demonstrations have added to the political messaging coming out of Tehran as uncertainty grows over whether Washington could resume military strikes against Iran.
Trump portrayed behind bars, mock execution staged
In one of the displays, actors portrayed Trump as a prisoner behind bars, with a performance depicting the US president being taken to the gallows. President Donald Trump may have made the decision to launch the war that damaged voter support for the Republican Party and contributed to a devastating midterm defeat. However, the historic losses have intensified efforts within the party to find someone else to hold accountable: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The House could vote as early as next week on whether to impeach the Pentagon chief. Several Republican lawmakers and allies, concerned by Tuesday's election results, are quickly shifting responsibility towards Hegseth. Behind closed doors, they argue that he played a major role in persuading Trump to attack Iran without a clear exit strategy or a plan to handle the political consequences. Even among House Republicans who managed to survive Tuesday's electoral setback, there is little expectation that they will distance themselves from the president with two years remaining in his term. It wasn’t war," he said. "They built an anti-aircraft facility... As soon as it was completed, we hit it last night very nicely," Trump said on the Fox & Friends show. Also read: Zelensky announces Ukraine, Russia and US to hold first trilateral talks since February in Abu Dhabi; rules out inviting Putin to Kyiv
US military conducts ‘defensive’ strikes against Iran
Citing a US official report, local media also confirmed that the US military conducted “defensive” strikes against Iran’s Qeshm Island on Monday. Trump went on to say that the US had Iran “totally where we want,” adding that Washington could choose to “finish them off” or instead show restraint and spare thousands of lives that would otherwise be lost in a full-scale war. Meanwhile, Iranian state media outlet IRNA reported that, in rapid succession, five explosions were heard on the island, and some residents saw two aircraft flying in its skies. US officials confirmed that the recent attack was defensive in nature, to stop Iran from having the freedom to attack commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for oil shipments that has been largely blocked ever since the war erupted in the region.

'I am not up for killing people, but if we have to, we’ll have to': Trump warns Iran of more US strikes

The United States has carried out fresh strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island, just hours before the crucial 2026 US midterm elections. US officials have described the operation as a limited defensive strike, targeting Iranian forces allegedly using surface-to-air missiles against American assets. The timing has raised questions about Washington's military strategy, especially after President Donald Trump had indicated that the US would not launch fresh attacks before the midterm polls.

Netanyahu pushing Trump hard to attack Iran immediately after midterm elections: Report

Iran on Sunday (Nov 1) warned that any new war with the United States could last longer than the previous conflict, saying Washington will not decide when it ends. Army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia said that US President Donald Trump would not dictate the terms of a future war.“A potential future war could last longer than previous conflict, and the American president would not be in a position to dictate the timing or the conditions of its conclusion,” Akraminia said, according to state television.
Tehran warns of wider retaliation
Akraminia was referring to the war that began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran retaliated with missile and drone attacks, while groups backed by Iran joined the fighting in Lebanon and Yemen.Defence Minister Mehrdad Akhlaghi on Sunday (Nov 1) warned of a “proportionate, decisive, and impactful response” to any attack.“Those who pose threats will not dictate the scope, timing, or consequences of Iran’s defensive response,” he said.Hossein Mohebbi, spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), echoed remarks made earlier by Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. He said a conflict with Washington would not be confined by geography.“In a conflict with America, there are no geographical limitations; a vast theatre has been defined for inflicting damage upon the enemy,” Mohebbi said.
Trump says targets remain
Earlier on Saturday (Oct 31), Trump said that the United States had knocked out Iran’s military, but had one or two targets to address.“We’ve knocked out their nuclear. We still have to take care of, I would say one or two sites, but we can do that in 10 minutes,” he said.
Will US, Iran hold direct Doha talks?
Qatari newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported a breakthrough in the diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between the US and Iran. The outlet reported, citing sources familiar with the mediation efforts led by Qatar and Pakistan, that Washington and Tehran have reached an understanding on preliminary steps involving Iran’s nuclear programme, the Strait of Hormuz and financial incentives. China and Russia could also act as guarantors of a potential agreement. The reported breakthrough comes after more than 12 hours of discussions between Qatari mediators and Iranian officials in Tehran on Friday (Oct 30). The talks were aimed at creating conditions for renewed direct negotiations and preventing another escalation.

He said a conflict with Washington would not be confined by geography. “In a conflict with America, there are no geographical limitations; a vast theatre has been defined for inflicting damage upon the enemy,” Mohebbi said. Trump says targets remain Earlier on Saturday (Oct 31), Trump said that the United States had knocked out Iran’s military, but had one or two targets to address. “We’ve knocked out their nuclear.

Iran has warned that any future war with the US could last longer than the previous conflict, saying President Donald Trump will not dictate its duration or terms.

Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat who said he had previously received briefings on some of the classified military planning, criticised the potential plans as ‘insane’. “It will lead to devastating escalation and the likely destruction of our commitment to the rule of law,” Murphy said. Is Trump preparing to strike Iran again? Top US military commander briefs White House: Report

A secret letter linked to US Vice President JD Vance has sparked fresh questions about Washington’s next move on Iran. Is President Donald Trump exploring a diplomatic breakthrough to end the Iran war, or could the outreach be part of a wider strategy involving renewed military pressure? As tensions between the US and Iran continue, the reported communication could offer clues about the Trump administration’s approach to negotiations, regional security and the future of the conflict.

US-Iran war: Vance's secret Iran letter: Is Trump preparing for peace or war?

US Vice President JD Vance is reaching out to one of Iran's most influential hard-liners in an effort to revive peace negotiations, even as President Donald Trump threatens to resume the war after next week's midterm elections, according to US officials and people familiar with the matter. Vance sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council and a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps who held the position for the longest period, according to people familiar with the outreach. One person said the letter was sent at Trump's direction and that the president was aware of the communication. Vance is exploring whether Washington and Tehran can find sufficient common ground to persuade Trump against authorising a final, short and intense attack on Iran in the coming weeks. Some US officials believe engaging Iranian hard-liners could produce a better diplomatic outcome. These figures have accumulated greater power in Tehran since the United States and Israel killed Iranian regime leaders at the beginning of the war. Last week, Trump said his administration was not negotiating with Iran and hinted at possible further military action.“We’re not negotiating with them, we are going to have something one way or another, it’ll happen soon,” he said. Vance's letter and subsequent discussions between US and Iranian officials have not included specific terms for a peace agreement. Instead, the exchanges have focused on establishing a possible framework for negotiations, a person familiar with the matter said. Rezaei said last week that Iran would not negotiate with Washington until its core demands were met. Although Vance has publicly supported the war against Iran, he has privately expressed reservations about allowing the conflict to continue for an extended period. Before Trump launched “Operation Epic Fury” in February, Vance argued for more extensive diplomatic efforts. Trump subsequently appointed Vance as the lead negotiator. The vice president travelled abroad twice to meet Iranian counterparts in an effort to secure a final agreement to end the conflict. A ‘memorandum of understanding’ reached in June collapsed two weeks after being signed, following disagreements over how shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would be restored. Vance's latest outreach comes as Republicans prepare for possible losses in the House and Senate during the midterm elections, potentially surrendering control of one or both chambers of Congress. Voters have cited the Iran conflict and rising fuel costs as sources of frustration with Trump and fellow Republicans. Vance is also the early leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028. Also Read: Israel election 2026: Netanyahu leads but falls short of majority with 85% of ballots counted; Arab parties could hold key A spokesman for Vance declined to discuss the talks. Washington is demanding nuclear concessions from Iran upfront, while Tehran is seeking immediate economic relief. The United States has maintained an economic blockade on Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump warns Gulf of new war, Iran threatens devastation

Iran has rejected a proposal presented by Qatar to end the war with the US. Reportedly, the draft deal was presented to Iranian negotiators on Sunday (Oct 25), as efforts to end the eight-month conflict remain stalled. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suggested resuming strikes on the Islamic Republic this week.According to a Reuters report, a senior Iranian official said that his country could not work with the draft peace proposal as Doha had only put ‌forward “unacceptable ideas” that did not amount to an “offer”. Tehran also ruled out any change in its position on the nuclear issue, which remains one of the biggest obstacles to a deal with Washington. The rejection followed Sunday’s meeting in Tehran, where Qatari mediators presented a draft proposal intended to address concerns on both sides over seven days.
Iran and US tensions continue
The proposal reportedly envisages daily confidence-building measures, with several countries acting as guarantors. But it remains unclear whether Tehran is willing to negotiate on the terms Washington considers essential. The US wants Iran’s nuclear programme on the negotiating table from the beginning. Tehran, however, wants the US blockade of its ports to end and restrictions on Iranian oil exports to be lifted. Iran maintains that its nuclear activities are intended for peaceful purposes. The two sides have struggled to revive diplomacy since an interim agreement reached in June fell apart. Qatar and Pakistan have continued trying to bridge the divide, but the latest rejection suggests that a breakthrough remains elusive.
Netanyahu keeps military option open
The diplomatic impasse comes as concerns grow that Israel and the US could resume attacks. On Wednesday, Netanyahu said that he would work with US President Donald Trump to eliminate what he called the “existential threat” posed by Iran. His statement came as Israel’s political parties began discussions on forming a new government, with Netanyahu’s bloc emerging as the largest after 85 per cent of votes were counted. His main rival, Gadi Eisenkot, has also backed strikes against Iran alongside economic pressure.
Yemen fighting adds to Gulf uncertainty
The conflict is no longer confined to Iran and Israel. Fighting between Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement and Saudi-backed forces has intensified near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key passage for international shipping. According to AFP, nearly 100 people had been killed since Monday, including 63 Houthi fighters and 34 members of forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognised government.Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any Israeli-instigated attack in the Persian Gulf could have a “devastating impact” on international markets.

Iran has rejected Qatar’s proposal to end the war with the US and Israel, insisting it will not compromise on its nuclear programme as Netanyahu signals cooperation with Trump and fighting intensifies across the Gulf.

US plans to pound Iran after midterms? Report claims ‘short operation’ coming, amid Trump's hints at another Epic Fury

President Donald Trump’s personal oil and gas holdings have risen significantly since the end of 2025, reaching an estimated value of between $22.5 million and $81.6 million, compared with between $12.6 million and $46 million at the end of last year, according to a new report from Democrats on the Congressional Joint Economic Committee. According to the Democratic minority, the stocks held by Trump have increased in value by an average of 43% since the end of 2025. The findings are based on data from LSEG Data Analytics. The report also found that Trump purchased between $4.7 million and $17.5 million in oil and gas stocks between March, after the war started, and the end of August, the latest period for which data was available. During the same timeframe, he sold between $2 million and $5.4 million in oil and gas stocks. CBS News exclusively obtained the report, which is based on Trump’s financial disclosures filed with the Office of Government Ethics. The filings require individuals to report transactions within value ranges rather than disclose exact amounts. The findings come as Americans face substantially higher gasoline prices amid the economic effects of the war. On Saturday night in Georgia, Trump boasted about the financial gains being made by the US oil and gas industry. "And while oil prices are temporarily high and will be falling dramatically in a short period of time, as soon as that war's over, because there's so much oil," he told the crowd. "All in the Hormuz Strait, there are ships waiting to come, we're getting them out so fast. The United States oil and gas business is making hundreds of billions of dollars. … Our country is making hundreds of billions of dollars because of what's happened in the Middle East." Trump also said his advisers had warned him against discussing the amount of money the oil and gas industry was making amid the turmoil in the Middle East. The wealthiest person to have served as president, Trump maintains a broad stock portfolio with investments across multiple sectors of the economy. CBS News has previously reported that he has executed thousands of stock and securities transactions this year, involving hundreds of millions of dollars. The White House has said Trump does not personally make investment decisions and that his money managers seek to replicate major stock market indexes. "President Trump only acts in the best interests of the American public, which is why they overwhelmingly reelected him to this office, despite years of lies and false accusations against him and his businesses," said White House spokesman Davis Ingle. Ingle said Trump's stock and bond portfolio is independently managed by third-party financial institutions and all his holdings are maintained in discretionary accounts and invested through computer-based model portfolios that automatically replicate recognized indexes." "Neither President Trump nor any member of his family has any ability to direct, influence, or provide input regarding how the portfolio is invested or when investments are bought or sold," Ingle added. “All investment decisions are made entirely by independent managers. There are no conflicts of interest.” During a July 2026 interview with CNBC, Trump said his son, Eric Trump, also manages his finances. Also Read: Maurene Comey, daughter of ex-FBI director James Comey, was unlawfully fired as federal prosecutor, judge rules
Energy stocks rally as fuel prices rise
Energy stocks have climbed as the Iran war has driven oil and gasoline prices to their highest levels in years, boosting oil companies' profits. Shares of energy companies listed on the S&P 500 have risen more than 50% since the beginning of the year, significantly outperforming the broader index, which has gained approximately 11%. In early February, before the war with Iran began at the end of the month, the national average price of regular gasoline was $2.87 per gallon, while diesel cost $3.68 per gallon. Eight months later, regular gasoline costs $4.29 per gallon on average, while diesel has reached $6.28 per gallon. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, is also trading above $115 per barrel, compared with less than $75 per barrel on the day before the war began.
Trump has criticised oil companies over profits
Trump's public statements have occasionally highlighted the influence his comments can have on policy and markets. In August, he singled out ExxonMobil and Chevron, accusing the companies of earning excessive profits from fuel. "They're making too much money, okay?" he said in the Oval Office. "Based on a shortage, they're making too much money. I don't like it. And I should be the last one to say because I'm a big free enterprise guy, nobody bigger." The president's oil and gas stock transactions account for a relatively small share of his overall wealth. Forbes estimated his net worth at approximately $7 billion as of September. CBS News reviewed Trump's oil and gas transactions in August. One notable transaction occurred on April 7, the day he announced a ceasefire in the war. According to a financial disclosure filed in late June, Trump's investment accounts sold between $500,000 and $1 million worth of ExxonMobil stock that day. ExxonMobil shares closed at $163.91 on April 7, before Trump announced the ceasefire that evening. The stock opened at $153.52 on April 8, a decline of more than 6%.

Trump has criticised oil companies over profits Trump's public statements have occasionally highlighted the influence his comments can have on policy and markets.

‘Do I make a deal or finish them off’: What Trump said on resuming Iran strikes

Iran is asking households to conserve natural gas ahead of winter, with officials warning that damage to energy infrastructure could leave the country struggling to meet demand during the coldest months. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Sunday (Oct 25) called for a nationwide drive to reduce gas consumption by at least 10 per cent. He also announced that consumers who save gas would receive financial incentives directly in their bank accounts.“To get through the approaching winter, a nationwide effort is essential ... to reduce gas consumption by at least 10 per cent,” Ghalibaf said in a video carried by Iranian media. He added that the payments would allow households to see how conservation translated into savings in their budgets.
War damage threatens winter supplies
This comes as Iran faces mounting pressure on its energy supply despite being a major natural gas producer. The country has repeatedly struggled with shortages, particularly during winter, when heating demand rises and temperatures in northern regions can fall below freezing. The war with the United States and Israel, which began in February, has added to those difficulties. Tehran says attacks during nearly 40 days of intense fighting damaged key infrastructure, including natural gas refineries. In October, First Vice-President Mohammad Reza Aref warned of a substantial gap between supply and demand in the coming cold season.According to the official IRNA news agency, Aref estimated that the country could face a daily gas shortfall of 100 million to 250 million cubic metres because of wartime damage. He said he hoped to restore around 100 million cubic metres of supply before winter began.
Hormuz tensions add to economic pressure
An April ceasefire halted the initial phase of intense bombardment, but tensions have continued over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route through which around a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas previously passed.Iran has asserted control over the strait and targeted vessels attempting unauthorised crossings. Washington, meanwhile, has imposed a counter-blockade on Iranian ports and pursued what it described in August as an "economic asphyxiation" campaign. With winter approaching, Tehran now faces the challenge of managing domestic energy demand while repairing infrastructure damaged during the conflict.

Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has urged citizens to cut gas consumption by 10% as war damage threatens winter supplies, with officials warning of major daily shortages.
