Iran is asking households to conserve natural gas ahead of winter, with officials warning that damage to energy infrastructure could leave the country struggling to meet demand during the coldest months. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Sunday (Oct 25) called for a nationwide drive to reduce gas consumption by at least 10 per cent. He also announced that consumers who save gas would receive financial incentives directly in their bank accounts.“To get through the approaching winter, a nationwide effort is essential ... to reduce gas consumption by at least 10 per cent,” Ghalibaf said in a video carried by Iranian media. He added that the payments would allow households to see how conservation translated into savings in their budgets.
War damage threatens winter supplies
This comes as Iran faces mounting pressure on its energy supply despite being a major natural gas producer. The country has repeatedly struggled with shortages, particularly during winter, when heating demand rises and temperatures in northern regions can fall below freezing. The war with the United States and Israel, which began in February, has added to those difficulties. Tehran says attacks during nearly 40 days of intense fighting damaged key infrastructure, including natural gas refineries. In October, First Vice-President Mohammad Reza Aref warned of a substantial gap between supply and demand in the coming cold season.According to the official IRNA news agency, Aref estimated that the country could face a daily gas shortfall of 100 million to 250 million cubic metres because of wartime damage. He said he hoped to restore around 100 million cubic metres of supply before winter began.
Hormuz tensions add to economic pressure
An April ceasefire halted the initial phase of intense bombardment, but tensions have continued over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route through which around a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas previously passed.Iran has asserted control over the strait and targeted vessels attempting unauthorised crossings. Washington, meanwhile, has imposed a counter-blockade on Iranian ports and pursued what it described in August as an "economic asphyxiation" campaign. With winter approaching, Tehran now faces the challenge of managing domestic energy demand while repairing infrastructure damaged during the conflict.

Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has urged citizens to cut gas consumption by 10% as war damage threatens winter supplies, with officials warning of major daily shortages.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday (Oct 24) said that the war with the United States and Israel is leaving many people struggling to afford basic necessities, as pressure on the country’s economy continues to mount. The remarks come as Washington increasingly relies on economic pressure against Tehran, including a blockade of Iranian ports that has restricted oil exports and trade. Iran, meanwhile, has maintained restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies. In a speech published on his website, Pezeshkian said, “There are many people in this society who are struggling to put food on the table because of the war we have found ourselves in, because of the wartime conditions we are living under.”
Ceasefire stalemate raises fears of fresh fighting
The conflict began on February 28, when US and Israeli strikes killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior military commanders. US intelligence has found that Iran has ‘substantially increased’ its efforts to target American diplomats and officials in the Middle East and beyond, with lethal plots reaching ‘advanced stages’, according to an October 23 memo to Secretary of State Marco Rubio obtained by Axios. The intelligence has raised concerns among US officials about potential threats to American personnel and is one reason the State Department is reducing staffing at several US embassies across the Middle East amid fears of a wider regional conflict. US officials are also concerned that Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen could expand their attacks beyond Saudi Arabia to other countries in the region. The possibility of renewed US and Israeli military operations against Iran, potentially after the midterm elections, is adding to the volatile security situation. President Trump addressed the possibility of further military action against Iran at a rally in Florida on Friday. "We may do another little Operation Epic Fury, or [the Iranians] will agree [to a deal]," President Trump said at a rally in Florida on Friday. The memo does not identify specific targets, countries outside the Middle East or the nature of the plots. However, it states that the underlying intelligence has already been shared with senior State Department officials. Clayton offered to downgrade as much of the sensitive intelligence as possible, allowing Rubio to distribute it more widely among personnel who could be at risk. Also Read: 'My name has always been Ilhan Omar': Congresswoman hits back at Trump, calls him a ‘creep’

US reduces diplomatic staffing across the Middle East
Earlier this week, the State Department ordered family members and nonessential personnel to leave the US Embassy in Riyadh and the consulates in Jeddah and Dhahran. On Friday, the department also ordered reductions in US diplomatic and government personnel at embassies in the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Qatar and Jordan, a US official said. "We decided that due to the threat of Houthi attacks and Iranian terror plots we need to reduce our footprint and keep only essential staff," the official said.

Iran targeting US diplomats? Intelligence warns of 'advanced' assassination plots: Report

As elections in Israel and America draw closer, tensions in West Asia are rising again. The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group, with 10,000 troops is heading towards the region. With Tehran too prepared for a large-scale retaliation, speculation is growing over the possibility of US and Israel striking Iran as early as this weekend. The first indication came earlier this week as US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth visited Israel and met Netanyahu on Monday. IDF reportedly simulated new strikes on Iran. According to reports, dozens of fighter jets flew more than 800 miles from Israel, passed through Syrian and Iraqi airspace and turned around at Iran's border. This may also have been a bid to provoke Iran into firing on the jets, thereby creating pretext for an Israeli strike. According to reports, US and Israel are preparing to resume attacks on Iran even before the Israeli general election, scheduled on October 27. This is likely to be a short but intense operation. Potential targets include Iran's energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities and missile and drone stockpiles. But what is the rationale behind this? Well, according to some observers, this could be used as a pretext to delay the Israeli elections as Netanyahu seeks to exploit the Iran war to his advantage. This comes as he is facing a tough bid for re-election with opinion polls showing Yashar party chief Gadi Eisenkot, as the more preferred prime ministerial choice.

For Trump too, the stakes are high. Ahead of the midterm polls on November 3, his popularity ratings are at a historic low. Multiple opinion polls have predicted a majority for Democrats in the US House of Representatives as well as the Senate. With Iran refusing to bend under pressure, the thinking in the US camp seems to be that one more heavy attack will push Tehran's economy over the edge and force it to negotiate for ending the war. Amid this, Trump has also hinted at a fresh wave of strikes on Iran. In another indication of impending hostilities, several Russian military aircraft have reportedly landed in Iran, as Moscow prepares to evacuate personnel from the Bushehr nuclear power plant. The first time Russia did so was on February 28, when the Iran war started. Amid heightened tensions, the US has ordered the departure of non-emergency employees and their families from Saudi Arabia and has also reportedly planned to withdraw staff from other missions in the region. Additionally, there has reportedly been a surge in the departure of wealthy expatriates, diplomats and members of royal families from West Asia in the last few days. On its part, Tehran has issued a terse warning. The IRGC has threatened to launch a ground invasion targeting its West Asian neighbours if the US and Israel resume strikes. And this is not all. Iran has threatened to target oil facilities, undersea cables, data centres, pipelines, airports and other civilian infrastructure in the region. Now, this warning cannot be understated. During the initial phase of the war, Iran inflicted significant damage on US military bases across the region with its barrage of missile and drone attacks, costing the US billions. According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the US has spent over 11 billion US dollars solely on missile defence for Israel in the last three years. A day earlier, the IRGC claimed to have hit four vessels allegedly involved in illegal oil transfers, claiming that three more vessels collided with mines near the Strait of Hormuz. It warned the US that continued provocations would lead to a wider response against its regional bases. According to a report, Iran is rebuilding an underground airbase called Eagle 44, which can shelter fighter aircraft, drones and ballistic missiles. Located in Hormozgan province, it sits on the foothills of the Zagros Mountains. Unveiled in 2023, it has been described by Iranian state media as one of the most important air bases, with fighter jets equipped with long-range cruise missiles. While this base was repeatedly struck this year, the report cited satellite imagery to claim fresh construction at the site. The other underlying factor is the Houthis, who have been on the offensive. Apart from seizing considerable territory in Yemen, the Iran-backed group has directly attacked Saudi Arabia's airports, oil facilities and even its defence ministry headquarters. As of now, France and Britain have deployed fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to help shield it from Houthi attacks. No country is ready to carry out offensive action against the Houthis in Yemen. Even Türkiye and Pakistan, which signed the Mecca Pact, have refrained from sending troops into Yemen. Now, without giving any evidence, Netanyahu again claimed that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons. Citing this, he instructed Israel's military and intelligence agencies to overthrow the Iranian government. According to Israel's Channel 13, though, Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir said that he does not see an operational need to strike Iran before the general election. Amid this, the mood on the streets of Tehran remains pensive. Some people expressed concerns that potential fresh strikes may increase their economic hardship. So, is an early end to the war out of the equation? According to America's envoy to the UN, Mike Waltz, the war could drag on for another year. He told the Financial Times that the US will not achieve its goal until Iran disposes of its highly enriched uranium, something that Tehran has already ruled out.

‘Fake hits, mines’ in Hormuz? Trump accuses Iran of driving up oil prices ahead of US midterms

As tensions between the United States and Iran continue to shape the global political landscape, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump face mounting political pressures at home. With elections and approval ratings in focus, questions are emerging over how domestic political calculations could influence decisions on Iran.

US-Iran war: Bibi, Trump gamble on new Iran war to save themselves in polls

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Wednesday (Oct 21) that it is getting ready to reveal a new weapon it referred to as the "Father of All Bombs". Without offering many details about the weapon, IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi said, “We are in the stage of preparing to unveil the 'Father of All Bombs'. This is something new for the enemy.” The announcement comes after reports that Washington has prepared plans to use a Massive Ordnance Air Blast, dubbed the "mother of all bombs", to hit military sites in Iran if ordered by US President Donald Trump. So, what is Iran's new weapon, and what devastation can it wreak? Here's all we know.
Trump's 'Mother of All Bombs'
On Friday, Trump hinted at the possible use of the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb, also known as the "mother of all bombs", to target Iranian nuclear facilities. Weighing around 9,800 kilograms (21,600 pounds), the GBU-43/B is one of the largest non-nuclear conventional bombs in the US arsenal. Trump's 'Mother of All Bombs' On Friday, Trump hinted at the possible use of the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb, also known as the "mother of all bombs", to target Iranian nuclear facilities. Weighing around 9,800 kilograms (21,600 pounds), the GBU-43/B is one of the largest non-nuclear conventional bombs in the US arsenal. It was first used in April 2017, during Trump's first presidential term, against a tunnel complex belonging to the ISIS (Daesh) terrorist organisation in Afghanistan. 'Father of all bombs' vs 'mother of all bombs': Iran threatens US with new weapon as Trump hints at MOAB strike

The United States and Israel have drawn up detailed plans for a possible new wave of attacks against Iran following the American midterm elections, according to US officials and others familiar with the discussions, The New York Times reported. As preparations for a short but intensive military campaign advance, the two countries have increased their training exercises, with aircraft flying over Iraq to rehearse strike maneuvers. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel this week to discuss potential new attacks, according to American officials. Potential targets could include Iran’s energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities, and its stockpiles of missiles and drones. Some officials believe another major offensive could inflict enough economic damage to push Iran’s already strained economy to the brink and compel Tehran to make diplomatic concessions after nearly eight months of conflict. However, there are substantial doubts about whether renewed military action would achieve better results than the first phase of intense US-Israeli strikes, which took place between February and April. Those attacks contributed to rising global energy prices and inflation, weakened security across the Middle East, and significantly depleted the Pentagon’s supply of missile interceptors. It also remains uncertain whether President Donald Trump will authorize another round of strikes. Throughout this year, he has repeatedly rejected proposals to resume large-scale combat operations, including an attack planned earlier this month when US and Israeli forces were reportedly close to being ready. All officials interviewed for this report spoke anonymously to discuss sensitive military planning. Iranian officials have warned that any renewed attacks would trigger a broader response. They have threatened to expand their targets beyond commercial shipping and regional energy infrastructure to include data centers and underwater internet cables. According to Iranian officials, the next phase of fighting would not be brief or confined to a limited set of targets. Meanwhile, the United States is building up a substantial military force that is expected to be fully deployed by early November. At the same time, diplomatic efforts are continuing, with American negotiators using the possibility of renewed warfare as leverage to push Iran toward meeting US demands concerning its nuclear program and control of the Strait of Hormuz. So far, however, Iranian negotiators have resisted making concessions on the nuclear issue, arguing that the matter should be postponed until a later stage of negotiations. Some US military planners believe an intensive three-day campaign could inflict sufficient economic damage to force Tehran to reconsider its negotiating position. Other Western officials remain unconvinced. They point out that American officials have repeatedly forecast Iran’s economic collapse, yet the Iranian government has continued to withstand mounting economic pressure. Also Read: 'You are a dummy, you are a stupid person': Trump loses temper with CNN, ABC reporters after questions about Russia sanctions
Israeli election could complicate military plans
Israel’s October 27 election could introduce another complication into the proposed military operation. Officials say there remains a small possibility that Trump could authorize military action before the end of this month. Nevertheless, several political considerations point toward a decision after the US midterm elections. One significant factor is Trump’s promise earlier this month that he would not launch an attack before voters went to the polls. The US military is also waiting for its full complement of assets to arrive. The deployment is expected to include three aircraft carriers, thousands of Marines, fighter jets and Special Operations forces, with the force buildup scheduled to be completed by early November. On Wednesday, the US State Department ordered nonemergency government personnel and their families to leave Saudi Arabia as the Iran-backed Houthi militia continued attacking targets there. A White House official said Wednesday that the administration does not comment on military plans ‘that may or may not exist’. The official added that Trump was keeping all options available to ensure Iran could not obtain nuclear weapons. Some officials have indicated that potential targeting plans may exclude oil refineries and other oil infrastructure because Trump wants to avoid driving gasoline prices even higher. At the same time, the US and Israeli militaries are preparing plans for operations against Iran’s nuclear program, according to people familiar with the discussions. One possible target is Pickaxe Mountain, a deeply buried nuclear facility known in Iran as Kooh Kolang. Last week, Trump said he was considering deploying a 22,000-pound GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb, commonly known as the MOAB, against the site. Officials say Trump is particularly interested in the weapon, partly because of its nickname, Mother of All Bombs.
Iran warns of an intense response
Mahdi Mohammadi, a senior adviser to Iran’s negotiator, Gen. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, wrote on social media this week that the prospect of the United States completing another round of attacks within 72 hours was a ‘fantasy’. He argued that Iran, rather than Washington, would determine when the war would end. Mohammadi also pointed to Trump’s statement in February that the conflict would last two weeks. “Our attacks will be more fierce, creative and different,” Mr. Mohammadi said. “We are determined and confident and strong planning has been put in place.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Saturday that Tehran's seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is still on the table, and that Iran remains ready to talk if Washington meets its conditions. For India, the cost of a war thousands of kilometres away can be measured in rupees. Every sustained increase in crude oil prices raises the amount the country must spend to keep its economy running. With the US midterm elections approaching on November 3, the energy shock also presents a political challenge for President Donald Trump.India's crude oil import bill stood at approximately $121.8 billion in the 2025-26 financial year, with imports meeting about 88.7 per cent of its crude requirements. At an illustrative exchange rate of ₹88 to the dollar, the bill translates to roughly ₹10.7 lakh crore. At the rupee's October 15 closing rate of about ₹95.05 per dollar, the same dollar bill would be equivalent to around ₹11.6 lakh crore, illustrating how currency depreciation increases the rupee cost of imports. The arithmetic is stark. Based on India's reported crude import volume in 2025-26, a $1-per-barrel increase sustained across the annual import volume could add roughly ₹16,000 crore to the import bill at an exchange rate of ₹88 to the dollar, assuming volumes remain unchanged.
The bill goes beyond oil
The price of crude, however, tells only part of the story. Shipping costs, insurance premiums and longer routes can make imported energy more expensive even when supplies remain available. The Strait of Hormuz is central to this risk. A disruption to the narrow waterway could delay shipments from Gulf producers, forcing buyers to compete for alternative supplies. Shipping costs have also risen on routes carrying Russian oil to India. Reuters reported in October that Black Sea-to-India Suezmax tanker freight had climbed to $27-30 million for a one-way voyage, up from around $19 million in September, amid heightened Black Sea risks and a wider surge in tanker rates.War-risk insurance adds another layer of expense. For shipowners, entering a high-risk area can mean paying more to insure vessels and cargoes. These additional costs can raise the overall expense of transporting crude, although the extent to which they reach Indian refiners and importers depends on shipping contracts and market conditions. The rupee matters, too. Since crude is traded in dollars, a weaker Indian currency makes every shipment more expensive in domestic terms.
From global markets to voters
For Indian households, a prolonged increase in energy costs could eventually affect fuel prices, transport fares, cooking gas and the cost of goods moved by road. The extent of the impact would depend on how long elevated costs persist and how much is absorbed by oil companies or the government. In the United States, the political calculation is more immediate. Higher petrol prices and renewed inflation could undermine the administration's economic message just weeks before voters choose members of Congress. The extent to which the Iran conflict affects the midterms will depend on how energy prices evolve and whether voters hold the administration responsible for the economic fallout. The election result will depend on more than energy prices. But the war premium offers a tangible measure of the economic trade-offs confronting both countries. For India, the question is how much more it must pay to secure energy. For Trump, it is whether voters believe the strategic gains justify the cost.

US considering use of ‘mother of all bombs’ in its war with Iran: Report

US President Donald Trump has said government officials who leak sensitive military information to the media ‘should be shot’, claiming that reports about a planned American military operation in Iran forced him to postpone the attack. Speaking at a midterm campaign rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, Trump criticised individuals responsible for disclosing classified defence information and accused media organisations of reporting details that could have endangered US troops. "In my opinion, leakers should be shot," Trump said during the rally. "In the old days, we used to shoot leakers." Trump alleged that Iran's military was ‘waiting’ for American troops ahead of a planned US operation. He claimed that The New York Times and CNN had published leaked information about the timing of US troops' departure and arrival. According to Trump, the disclosure prompted him to reschedule the operation for two days later. "Somebody leaked, some sleazebag," Trump said. "They ought to go to jail and be shot." Trump appeared to be referring to Operation Midnight Hammer, the US military operation targeting Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025, although he did not explicitly identify the operation during his remarks. The president has a long history of clashes with major news organisations, particularly over their coverage of his administration's military and national security policies. In 2025, Trump threatened to sue The New York Times and CNN over their reporting on a preliminary intelligence assessment that contradicted his claims that Iran's uranium enrichment facilities had been ‘completely and totally obliterated’ by US strikes during Operation Midnight Hammer. Trump again defended a hard-line approach towards people who disclose sensitive military information, arguing that such leaks could compromise national security and put American personnel at risk. "When they leak what time you're going to attack a country, and the reason you're attacking is really for defense, because you don't want them to have a weapon that can blow up millions of people at one shot. No, leakers should be dealt with very, very strongly," Trump said. "To me, they're the scum of the earth. No, leakers should be dealt with very, very strongly," Trump said. "To me, they're the scum of the earth. The leakers are the scum of the earth," he added. US President Donald Trump, during a campaign rally in New York on the evening of October 9, said that either Iran “gives us everything, or they don't exist any longer”, as Iranian officials remain insistent there won't be a deal until the U.S. lifts the blockade and delivers sanctions relief. Trump on campaign blitz threatens Iran with destruction if they don't give US 'everything'

US President Donald Trump voiced frustration on Friday over not receiving the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, devoting a significant portion of a campaign-style rally in Syracuse, New York, to criticising the Nobel Committee and defending his foreign policy record. Trump's remarks came in a year marked by the US conflict with Iran, adding to scrutiny of his claims that he has helped bring international wars to an end. The event was intended to support Republican candidates, but Trump spent an extended period discussing the Nobel Peace Prize decision and arguing that the honour should have been awarded to him. “The United States of America, represented by me as your president, should have received the Nobel peace prize, but didn’t. And this is an indelible stain on the country of Norway, and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision,” Trump said. He continued his criticism of the award's organisers, accusing them of undermining the credibility of the prize.“The Nobel peace prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilization,” Trump went on. “We will not forget, Norway, that you didn’t give this prize.”
Trump claims credit for ending wars
During his speech, Trump listed several conflicts he said he had helped resolve, although some of the situations he cited were not wars and others remain unresolved. Gravitas | Is Trump playing a double game with Iran?

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that negotiations to end the Middle East war will have little chance of success unless Washington abandons pressure and threats, as efforts to break the months-long stalemate remain unsuccessful. Speaking at a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Turkmenistan on Friday (Oct 9), Pezeshkian said any diplomatic process must be based on mutual respect rather than coercion.“Dialogue holds meaning and a chance of success only when based on mutual respect and mutual commitments, and when devoid of pressure and threat,” he said.He added, “Negotiation conducted in the shadow of force is not negotiation, it is imposition and coercion.”Pezeshkian also cautioned that sanctions against Iran would have consequences for the wider region, affecting “regional trade, connectivity, energy, and order.”
Tehran questions value of negotiations
The latest remarks follow Pezeshkian’s criticism of negotiations with the United States earlier this week. On Monday (Oct 5), he described talks as worthless, arguing that diplomatic engagement had failed to prevent further attacks.“With an enemy that everyday resorts to assassination, sanctions, pressure and threats, and that breaks its commitments, negotiations are meaningless,” he said. The conflict began in late February with US and Israeli attacks on Iran, which came as Washington and Tehran were engaged in negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme.A memorandum of understanding reached in June outlined a framework for a lasting settlement.
