External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Monday that the United States remains a critical economic and strategic partner for India and emphasised that New Delhi simultaneously has improved ties with China, Russia, Europe and the Gulf as part of a “multi-alignment” approach.Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave, Jaishankar said Washington is India’s principal strategic partner and a major economic, trade and defence partner. “Where the US is concerned, it is one of our principal strategic partners.
‘America deal can boost Indian economy,’ says Jaishankar
The External Affairs Minister also said that India’s proposed trade deal with the United States could provide a significant boost to the economy by expanding market access and deepening ties with one of the world’s largest and most lucrative markets. Jaishankar described the India-US trade agreement under negotiation as a “big step with great possibilities”, alongside recently concluded trade agreements with the European Union, the UK and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). “These are big steps with great possibilities which would have a beneficial impact on the economy,” he said, adding that the agreements would also help bring greater balance to India’s trade relationships. “We need to be very objective about where the problems are today in the trading system,” he said, adding that the US, as the world’s biggest economy and a major trading power, cannot be left out of any effort to reform the global trade system. Jaishankar further added that India’s trade strategy should focus not merely on reducing bilateral deficits but on addressing market-access restrictions that contribute to those deficits. The minister said that as per the “multi-alignment” approach, India seeks to advance multiple relationships based on their respective opportunities and challenges. “Every relationship is net-net a plus for us,” he said.
‘Can’t say US is to blame for all trade problems’
External Affairs Minister Jaishankar also cautioned against blaming Washington for all the problems facing global trade and said that several market distortions in the global trading system have emerged from sources other than the US and need to be assessed objectively. “We can’t say US is to blame for all the trade problems,” Jaishankar said.
‘UN gridlocked, has become irrelevant in many cases’
Foreign minister S Jaishankar reiterated the call for reform in the United Nations, saying the global body has become irrelevant in many cases.“Where the UN is concerned, I think it’s obvious to everybody by now that the UN is gridlocked. That if you look at the big issues of the day, whether you look at the conflict in the Gulf, whether you look at the conflict in Ukraine, whether you look at other issues in Africa, whether you look at COVID, actually, the United Nations has been largely irrelevant to the decision-making,” he said. About the UN Security Council, he said, there is a widely held view that the Security Council no longer represents the entirety of the global interest. The UN, he recalled, started with 51 members and now has grown almost four times.“If you have grown four times and you want to keep the old board of management, it is not going to work. It is common sense,” he said. “The UN has done a big service to the international community. Our job must be to fix the UN, not to work around the UN. But the UN itself has to help with that process,” he added.

India's campaign for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council has received fresh support from Mauritius, which praised New Delhi's constructive role in global affairs and called for its inclusion among the Council's permanent members. The endorsement comes amid growing international debate over long-pending UN reforms. Russia, Portugal and Mauritius have all voiced support for India's candidature, adding momentum to calls for a more representative and contemporary Security Council.

UNSC reform momentum grows: Russia, Portugal, Mauritius push for India's permanent seat bid

As world leaders gather in New York for the annual United Nations General Assembly, the proceedings offer an appropriate moment to consider a transformation that goes beyond the institution itself: the changing nature of power in international affairs. The theme of this year’s General Assembly — “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all” — is particularly apt. The UN was created in 1945 as part of a new international architecture, alongside the Bretton Woods institutions, designed to replace the instability of an earlier era with rules, institutions and greater predictability. Before 1945, however, international order rested principally on great-power diplomacy. Alliances shifted, treaties were negotiated, spheres of influence were contested, and crises were often managed through conferences and bargains among the major powers. The Concert of Europe after the Napoleonic Wars was an early example. The League of Nations subsequently attempted to institutionalise collective security, but failed to prevent the descent into the Second World War. The post-1945 settlement was therefore more than the creation of new organisations. It represented a different conception of international order. Bretton Woods established the IMF and World Bank as pillars of international economic cooperation, while the UN became its principal political institution. Today, that system is under pressure. But the deeper transformation may not be simply geopolitical. We may be moving from a predominantly geopolitical world towards a world of technopolitics — a world in which technological capability itself becomes a principal source of geopolitical power. Artificial intelligence is at the centre of this transformation, but it is only one part of it. Semiconductors, computing capacity, data, robotics and humanoids, quantum technologies, biotechnology, digital currencies, communications networks and the energy required to power them are becoming strategic assets. For much of the twentieth century, territory, natural resources, industrial capacity and military power were among the principal currencies of national power. In the emerging order, control over technological ecosystems may become equally important. This is more than technology influencing geopolitics. It is the emergence of technopolitics: the capacity to develop, control and deploy critical technologies becoming an integral component of national power. Also Read: Russia will ‘consider’ Trump’s G20 invitation to Putin; EU vows to keep condemning Moscow The change is also blurring the traditional distinction between states and corporations. A relatively small number of technology companies possess capital, data, computing infrastructure and scientific capabilities on a scale capable of influencing national power. Governments, meanwhile, increasingly regard critical technologies and the companies that develop them as instruments of economic and strategic security. The emerging order could therefore be shaped not only by states, but by states, corporations and the technological ecosystems that connect them. The United States and China are presently the two most consequential centres of this competition. Their rivalry increasingly encompasses artificial intelligence, advanced semiconductors, data centres and strategic supply chains, alongside conventional trade and military competition. This does not necessarily mean the emergence of a rigid new Cold War. Economic interdependence remains substantial, and technological boundaries are unlikely to be completely sealed. Nevertheless, a form of technological G2 could emerge: two broad ecosystems centred on the United States and China, with a considerable grey zone between them. Other major powers will have to decide how they respond. Europe, India, Japan, Russia and others may align substantially with one ecosystem, seek to build independent capabilities, or pursue a hybrid approach that allows them to work with both. For India, the question is particularly consequential. India has moved closer to the United States in critical and emerging technologies while simultaneously seeking to strengthen its own technological capabilities. Its scale, scientific base, digital economy and growing technological ambitions give it the possibility of pursuing something more sophisticated than simply choosing between Washington and Beijing. The question for India is whether it can develop sufficient technological depth to become a pole in its own right while participating in both major ecosystems where its interests require it. This is not merely an economic calculation. It is a question of strategic autonomy. The implications extend beyond individual technologies. If technological capabilities become increasingly concentrated in a relatively small number of corporations and their associated states, institutions created after 1945 may increasingly struggle to reflect the actual distribution of power. The United Nations, IMF, World Bank and wider multilateral economic system were designed for a world in which states were overwhelmingly the principal repositories of strategic power. The future may be different. Power may increasingly be distributed between states and technological networks that cross national borders. This raises a difficult question for the international community now meeting in New York: will the existing multilateral order adapt to this new distribution of power, or will a period of great-power bargaining precede the creation of a new system? There is an intriguing historical possibility. The technologies transforming the twenty-first century could take us back towards a political pattern associated with an earlier age: a world in which a relatively small number of powerful actors negotiate directly over the rules of the international system. It would not be a return to the nineteenth century. Technology has changed the nature of power too profoundly for that. But the underlying political pattern could become familiar: great powers, together with their associated economic and technological interests, making arrangements among themselves, sometimes through international institutions and sometimes outside them. In that sense, the future could represent a return to the future. Yet this may be only an interregnum. The post-1945 order itself emerged because the arrangements that preceded it had proved inadequate to the realities of their time. The technological revolution may eventually require a comparable institutional response. Artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, data, digital currencies and other technologies will raise questions that existing institutions were never designed to answer. The challenge is to ensure that technological power does not outrun the institutions needed to govern it. Whether the emerging order becomes more fragmented or eventually produces new forms of multilateralism remains uncertain. What is becoming clearer is that technology is no longer merely an instrument of geopolitical power. It is becoming one of its principal sources. The great strategic question of the coming decades may therefore not simply be who controls territory, resources or military power, but who controls the technologies that increasingly determine how the world itself works.

Back to the future: The rise of technopolitics

Chinese President Xi Jinping will be in the United States this week, but he will not be taking the podium at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Instead, Xi is heading to Washington for a state visit and a closely watched meeting with US President Donald Trump. The UN General Debate opens in New York on September 22, bringing together more than 130 world leaders at a moment marked by wars, economic tensions, artificial intelligence risks and questions over the future of the multilateral system. Yet Xi's three-day US visit begins on September 23, with his most important engagement taking place at the White House on September 24. The decision means Xi will be hundreds of kilometres away from the UN podium while Trump addresses the General Assembly in New York. But Beijing has not presented Xi's absence as a rejection of the UN. China has officially said Xi is travelling to Washington at Trump's invitation from September 23 to 25, where the two leaders will discuss China-US relations as well as international issues involving peace and development.
Washington takes centre stage
For Beijing, the immediate diplomatic priority appears to be direct engagement with Washington. The White House has planned a high-profile reception for Xi. Trump is scheduled to personally greet the Chinese president at Joint Base Andrews on September 23, followed by a state arrival ceremony at the White House on September 24. The visit comes more than a decade after Xi's previous White House visit. That symbolism matters. Rather than participating in the crowded diplomatic environment of UNGA, Xi will have direct access to Trump in a bilateral setting where trade, technology, Taiwan and wider geopolitical issues can be discussed without the constraints of a multilateral forum. The meeting also comes after years of friction between the world's two largest economies, including tariff disputes, technology restrictions and tensions over Taiwan.
Trade, AI and Taiwan on the table
The Trump-Xi meeting is expected to cover several of the most sensitive areas of the relationship. Trade remains a central issue, with both sides having an interest in preventing another escalation in tariffs and economic restrictions. Artificial intelligence and technology controls are also increasingly important areas of competition, particularly over advanced chips and access to critical technologies. Taiwan is another major fault line. US arms sales to Taiwan and Washington's broader security relationship with Taipei remain highly sensitive issues for Beijing. Also Read: Trump Xi Meeting 2026: 6 areas that will be closely watched at the bilateral
Not a Chinese withdrawal from the UN
It would be misleading, however, to interpret Xi's absence as China walking away from the United Nations. China continues to participate in the UN system, and Chinese officials remain involved in the General Assembly and other diplomatic discussions. Xi's choice is better understood in the context of his unusually significant Washington agenda this week.
Why the timing matters
Xi's decision comes at a moment when Washington and Beijing are attempting to manage competition without allowing it to spiral into a broader confrontation. The two leaders have already met earlier this year, and the September visit is being presented by Beijing as another important high-level engagement. The White House, meanwhile, is giving Xi a formal state welcome, underscoring the importance Washington attaches to the meeting. For Xi, the Washington meetings offer an opportunity for sustained, direct discussions with the US president on issues that affect China's economic and strategic interests. For Trump, hosting Xi during UNGA week puts the US-China relationship at the centre of an already crowded diplomatic calendar.

Xi is going to be in America, but not at the UN: Why China’s president chose Trump over the General Assembly

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has opened with a theme that reflects the challenges facing the international system: “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” The theme was put forward by General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh, who was elected to lead the 2026–27 session in June. But what does the phrase actually mean? At its core, the UNGA 2026 theme is about rebuilding confidence in multilateral institutions while ensuring that the United Nations can adapt to a rapidly changing world. Rahman’s programme links trust and reform, arguing that the United Nations needs to demonstrate through concrete results that it can respond effectively to global challenges.
What does ‘Restoring Trust’ mean?
The first part of the theme focuses on a growing challenge for international cooperation: trust in the ability of global institutions to deliver results. The UN’s 81st session begins against a backdrop of armed conflicts, humanitarian crises, widening inequalities, climate emergencies and pressure on the multilateral system. The President’s programme says these developments have contributed to an erosion of confidence in international institutions. For Rahman, restoring trust means showing that the UN can move beyond declarations and produce practical outcomes. In his opening remarks on September 8, he said restoring trust requires both 'delivery and reform', with the organisation demonstrating that it can effectively serve the people it represents. That also means strengthening cooperation among UN member states and making the organisation more accountable, responsive and effective.
What does ‘Managing Transformation’ mean?
The second part of the theme focuses on the major changes reshaping the world. Technology, artificial intelligence, climate change, shifting economic structures, demographic changes and new security challenges are transforming societies and international relations. The UNGA programme particularly highlights AI, big data and digital platforms. While these technologies can accelerate development, the UN also identifies risks including inequality, bias, surveillance and misuse. The theme therefore is not simply about embracing technological change. It is also about governing that change fairly and ensuring that developing countries and communities are not left behind. Rahman has called for inclusive implementation of the Global Digital Compact, investment to close the digital divide and stronger international cooperation on AI governance. Also Read: WATCH | Underwater footage shows capsized Indonesian passenger ship as 129 remain missing
What does ‘A United Nations That Delivers for All’ mean?
The final part of the theme connects trust and transformation with the UN's ability to deliver results for its entire membership. The programme is organised around six interconnected pillars:

Silence the Guns, Amplify the Voices — peace, security and justice

No One Left Behind, No Country Left Out — sustainable development and accelerating the SDGs

Our Planet, Our Pact — climate resilience and environmental sustainability

Rights and Protection: Freedom from Fear and Want — human rights and humanitarian action

Innovation with Inclusion — AI, digital governance, science and technology

We the Peoples, Reimagined — UN reform and inclusive global governance

The six areas are designed to be interconnected. The UN argues that peace, development, climate action, human rights and effective global governance cannot be treated as completely separate challenges.
Why is the theme significant in 2026?
The timing is important because the UN is entering its ninth decade amid major geopolitical and economic changes. The 81st session follows the UN's 80th anniversary and comes as the organisation continues initiatives such as UN80 reforms, the Pact for the Future and the Global Digital Compact. The new session seeks to turn those reform efforts into more effective and member-driven action. The theme also places particular emphasis on making multilateralism more responsive to today's challenges rather than relying solely on structures created decades ago. Rahman has described the task as making the United Nations “fit for the future”, while emphasising the importance of dialogue and cooperation among member states.
From conflicts to AI: What will UNGA 2026 focus on?
The theme covers a wide range of issues expected to dominate discussions during the 81st session and its High-Level Week. These include peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, humanitarian crises, human rights, AI governance and digital inclusion. The High-Level Week is scheduled for September 22–28, 2026, with nearly 130 heads of state and government expected to attend in person, according to the UN. For the UN, the central challenge is therefore twofold: restore confidence in multilateral cooperation while adapting the institution to a world undergoing rapid transformation. That is the broader meaning behind “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”

UNGA 2026 theme explained: Understand what ‘Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation’ means and why trust, reform, AI and global cooperation matter

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a clarification on Sunday that India has voted in favour of a UN resolution titled "Correct the Map" but firmly drew a red line that any particular map must strictly adhere to its international boundaries, including the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as projected in India's official territorial maps.In a statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “India voted in favour of the resolution and also made an explanation of the vote, stressing the underlying principle of promoting equal - area cartographic representation. We also highlighted that the resolution does not constitute endorsement of any specific map, projection or depiction of national boundaries. After more than a decade of discussions, 128 countries have reached an agreement on a framework that could eventually lead to international rules governing autonomous weapons. The non-binding text was adopted by consensus on Saturday (Sep 5) during talks in Geneva under the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, an international treaty developed under the framework of the United Nations. The agreement is being viewed as a significant step in efforts to address weapons systems capable of identifying and engaging targets with varying levels of human control. The breakthrough comes as governments grapple with how far machines should be allowed to make decisions involving lethal force. The issue has become increasingly urgent as advanced weapon systems feature in conflicts across Ukraine, Sudan and the Middle East. Their growing use has fuelled concerns about civilian casualties, accountability and whether humans can retain meaningful control over decisions to use deadly force.
What are killer robots?
“Killer robots” is a widely used term for autonomous weapons capable of detecting and engaging targets based on their programming, rather than requiring a human operator to approve every individual attack. The technology has prompted a sharp divide among countries. Advocates of tougher international rules say humans must remain responsible for decisions involving lethal force. Others, including major military powers, have resisted binding restrictions. The final Geneva text also faced criticism from Stop Killer Robots, which argued that the language was weakened during the final hours of negotiations.“It’s a real shame that all the work done by states on the text over the past three years has been substantially diluted in the last hours,” Nicole van Rooijen, executive director of Stop Killer Robots, told Reuters.Negotiators worked through the night to bridge differences, particularly over how autonomy and human judgment should be addressed. The United States and Russia have backed national guidelines instead of legally binding global rules. Costa Rican diplomat and former vice-president Rebeca Grynspan has emerged as the surprise frontrunner in the race to become the next secretary-general of the United Nations, potentially making history as the organisation’s first woman to hold the post. Grynspan, whose parents fled Europe after the Holocaust, currently heads the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Her maternal grandparents were killed by the Nazis, while her parents emigrated from Poland to Central America. The UNCTAD chief has also overseen detailed assessments of the economic impact of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories. The current UN secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, is due to complete his second five-year term on 31 December 2026. Under the informal regional rotation system traditionally followed for the position, the next secretary-general is expected to come from Latin America.
Grynspan leads first UN Security Council straw poll
In the first secret straw poll conducted by the UN Security Council, its five permanent members and 10 elected members were asked to indicate whether they “encourage”, “discourage” or have “no opinion” about seven candidates.Grynspan emerged with the strongest result, receiving 10 “encourage” votes, four “no opinion” votes and just one “discourage” vote. The identity of the member that cast the “discourage” vote has not been disclosed. However, securing only one objection gives Grynspan a strong early position in what is expected to be a closely watched selection process. The process is expected to continue through further consultations, with the final stages likely to take place in October.
Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett emerges as closest rival
Grynspan's closest challenger is Guyana’s former UN ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, who received nine “encourage” votes, two “discourage” votes and four “no opinion” votes. Rodrigues-Birkett performed particularly strongly in a Bloomberg-sponsored debate held at the UN General Assembly last month. She received 49% of the vote among attendees, while Grynspan finished second with 14%. “Grynspan is seen by some as the continuity candidate, having the tacit support from Guterres,” said one western diplomat. “But the key is the source of the candidate’s discouragement votes: if [the votes] are coming from Russia, China or the US, there is a risk of deadlock.” Also Read: Who is Daniel Kinahan? A major UNCTAD report published in February 2026 estimated that the Palestinian economy had suffered $212.2 billion in lost economic output between 2000 and 2024. The report stated that “cumulatively, the Palestinian economy lost an estimated $212.2bn (in constant 2015 dollars) from 2000 to 2024. This partial, estimated lost potential, equivalent to nearly 20 times the entire Palestinian GDP of 2024, stems directly from Israeli occupation policies, restrictions, closures, and recurrent military operations.” In November 2025, Grynspan also highlighted the dramatic decline in Gaza’s economic output, noting that GDP per capita had fallen to approximately $161 a year.
How is the UN secretary-general elected?
The secretary-general is selected through a process involving both the Security Council and the UN General Assembly. The Security Council must recommend a candidate to the 193-member General Assembly, which is then asked to endorse the nominee. A candidate needs at least nine positive votes in the Security Council and must avoid a veto from any of its five permanent members. The next secretary-general must be selected before the end of 2026, when Guterres’ second term expires. Further Security Council consultations and straw polls are expected as countries assess the candidates and determine who can secure the broadest support. For now, Grynspan’s strong opening poll result puts her at the front of a highly competitive race that could determine the future direction of the United Nations.
