Speaking at the United Nations Troop Contributing Countries’ (UNTCC) Chiefs Conclave 2025, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar noted that the United Nations continues to reflect the realities of 1945, rather than those of 2025. The Indian army is hosting senior leaders from 32 troop contributing nations, along with senior United Nations officials, for three days in the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi. Elaborating on Indian peacekeeping philosophy, Jaishankar said India's peacekeeping is based on its civilisation ethos. Drawing upon the Indian interpretation of universalism, he said that, “We see the world as one family, a vision enshrined in the timeless phrase 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'. This is not just cultural wisdom, but an outlook that anchors our worldview”.He also asserted that there is an urgent need for reform. He said that after eight long decades, the institution is lagging behind on adapting to changes and is at risk of becoming obsolete. "Institutions that fail to adapt risk irrelevance, not just irrelevance, but eroding legitimacy, leaving us without recourse in times of uncertainty," he said. He also urged that the UN's credibility depends on amplifying the voice of the Global South or the developing world. He highlighted that eventhough many nations support the expansion of the permanent and non-permanent members, the historical injustice continues because 'the process of reform is being used to derail the agenda'.“Let me honour today the more than 4,000 UN and 182 Indian peacekeepers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty” said Jaishankar. He added that peacekeeping forces have become an important instrument of the UN functions, eventhough it was not part of the original UN design. "The primary responsibility for the protection of civilians lies with the host state,” he added, underlining that mandates cannot be imposed without local collaboration and without consultation with the host nation.

Drawing upon the Indian interpretation of universalism, he said that, “We see the world as one family, a vision enshrined in the timeless phrase 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'. This is not just cultural wisdom, but an outlook that anchors our worldview”. He also asserted that there is an urgent need for reform. He highlighted that eventhough many nations support the expansion of the permanent and non-permanent members, the historical injustice continues because 'the process of reform is being used to derail the agenda'. “Let me honour today the more than 4,000 UN and 182 Indian peacekeepers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty” said Jaishankar. He added that peacekeeping forces have become an important instrument of the UN functions, eventhough it was not part of the original UN design. "The primary responsibility for the protection of civilians lies with the host state,” he added, underlining that mandates cannot be imposed without local collaboration and without consultation with the host nation.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlights the urgent need for UN reforms, emphasising inclusivity, Global South representation, and the evolving role of peacekeeping at UNTCC 2025 in New Delhi.

US President Donald Trump has accused the United Nations of sabotage after three technical problems disrupted his arrival and speech at the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. He said the Secret Service is now looking into what he called “three very sinister events”, an escalator malfunction, a teleprompter failure and audio problems in the assembly hall.Trump said he will write to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and has asked for “an immediate investigation.” He called the incidents a “REAL DISGRACE” and insisted they were not accidents. “This wasn’t a coincidence, this was triple sabotage at the UN. They ought to be ashamed of themselves,” he wrote on Truth Social. “All security tapes at the escalator should be saved, especially the emergency stop button. The Secret Service is involved,” he added.
What happened on the escalator?
The first problem occurred as Trump and the first lady descended an escalator after arriving at the General Assembly. The escalator stopped and briefly put the couple in an awkward position. Trump later said it was “amazing that Melania and I didn’t fall forward onto the sharp edges of these steel steps, face first.” He blamed the incident on deliberate action and demanded those responsible be arrested, “The people that did it should be arrested!”A UN official, however, offered a different explanation. In a statement the UN said a videographer from the US delegation who was moving backward at the top of the escalator “may have inadvertently triggered” a safety mechanism. The UN did not confirm any malicious intent.
What went wrong with the teleprompter and sound?
Trump also complained about problems with the teleprompter and the hall’s audio during his address. He joked on stage after the teleprompter failed, “These are the two things I got from the United Nations, a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter.” He later said the teleprompter was “stone cold dark” during his speech. He added that he learned only after the event that “the sound was completely off,” meaning delegates could hear him only if they used their interpreters’ earpieces. Trump said these three separate failures together convinced him the incidents were deliberate.
What has the UN said?
The UN has not suggested sabotage. Its brief response focused on the escalator safety stop and pointed to the videographer’s possible role. The organisation has not commented publicly on the teleprompter or audio problems beyond standard technical explanations.
Why did Trump call it sabotage?
Trump cast the trio of problems as coordinated, writing that it was “only that we were each holding the handrail tightly or, it would have been a disaster.” He said he would press for a full review and wants access to security footage around the escalator.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (September 23) addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). In a speech that lasted for 55 minutes, the US president said, “Climate change — it's the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world, in my opinion. The carbon footprint is a hoax made up by people with evil intentions, and they're heading down a path of total destruction.” “If you don’t get away from this green scam, your country is going to fail," the US president further added. Also Read: 'I invite every one of you for dinner...': Trump at UN boasts deploying National Guards in Washington, says 'it is TOTALLY safe now' Trump referred to immigration and climate change policies as a 'double-tailed monster' that he believes is damaging Europe. He particularly criticised what he described as the ‘unmitigated disaster’ of immigration. “If you don’t stop people that you’ve never seen before, that you have nothing in common with, your country is going to fail. I’m the president of the United States, but I worry about Europe. I love Europe, I love the people of Europe. And I hate to see it being devastated by energy and immigration, that double-tailed monster that destroys everything in its wake," the president was quoted as saying. Speaking directly to European leaders, Trump argued that their decisions were driven by a desire to appear compassionate and politically correct, but he claimed that these actions were undermining Europe’s cultural heritage. Many of the US’s European allies are predominantly white, with a recent surge of immigrants coming from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Trump also took aim at Europe’s green energy initiatives, mocking past climate change predictions. He pointed out that experts had once warned of catastrophic global impacts by the year 2000, including the possibility of entire countries being wiped off the map. However, he argued that none of these dire forecasts had come true. In reality, climate change has led to rising sea levels and stronger storms, resulting in small island nations facing existential threats. These environmental changes have also led to significant costs for disaster response and recovery in both the US and globally.
