In a new discovery, the archaeologists have now claimed that the bedbugs were brought to the United Kingdom by the Romans.

Fresh evidence, which proved that the bedbugs were brought by the Romans, was unearthed by the archaeologists working at Vindolanda, which is a Roman garrison site located in the south of Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, reported&nbsp;The Guardian.

In the study, the head of the Vindolanda archaeological team Dr Andrew Birley said, “It is incredibly rare to find them in any ancient context.”

The discovery was made by 24-year-old Katie Wyse Jackson, who is a student at University College Dublin (UCD). She was investigating the excavated material as part of her research in archaeoentomology (the study of insects present at archaeological sites).

Jackson discovered two thoraces – which dated back to around AD100 – and was said to have come from the common bedbug, which is known as Cimex lectularius. The thoraces were found in the lowest layers of Vindolanda.

“Finding this kind of thing helps humanise the people of the past,” said Wyse Jackson, in her research.

Emphasising how Roman philosopher Pliny mentioned the bedbugs' medicinal value in the treatment of certain ailments like ear infections, she said, “People then had all sorts of notions of what insects could do.”

Lecturer in environmental archaeology at UCD Dr Stephen Davis was part of the specialist team.

He claimed that these thoraces were earlier found in Alcester in Warwickshire, another Roman site in England, and added that the ones found in Vindolanda would be “the earliest found in Britain so far”.

While analysing soil samples, Wyse Jackson also found beetles can provide further insights: “I can learn about trade, food storage, hygiene, waste disposal from what species are present and in what numbers. At the moment, I’m finding a large amount of grain and dung beetles,” she said.

“So we’re really not looking at a clean space here. Most importantly, a large proportion of the insects I’m finding are what we call synanthropic. They live in close proximity to humans. The Romans do have that reputation as being extremely clean and so it’s interesting to find all of these insects that are contrary to that,” she added.

The Russian National Guard, a squad which is also known as Rosgvardia, is set to incorporate three ex-Wagner assault detachments into its very first volunteer corps formation, said the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The MoD, in its customary intelligence update on social media platform X, shared that Russian President Vladimir Putin had signed a law on 25 December last year, permitting the Russian National Guard to create its own volunteer formations. Rosgvardia is often referred to as Putin’s “private army”.

“Rosgvardia will likely deploy its new volunteer detachments to Ukraine and Africa. Rosgvardia is reportedly offering volunteers six-month contracts for service in Ukraine, and nine-month contracts for service in Africa," read the statement.&nbsp;

"The incorporation of former Wagner assault detachments into Rosgvardia’s volunteer corps highly likely indicates that Wagner has been successfully subordinated to Rosgvardia, increasing the Russian state’s command and control over the Wagner group,” it added.

The United States and the United Kingdom carried out a fresh series of joint air strikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen.&nbsp;

The Pentagon, in a statement, said that the air strikes carried out on Monday (Jan 22) hit eight targets which included weapon storage facilities, air defence systems, missile systems and launchers.

The latest strikes conducted by the US and UK were against "eight Houthi targets in Yemen in response to the Houthis' continued attacks against international and commercial shipping as well as naval vessels transiting the Red Sea," said Washington and London, in a joint statement with other nations which supported the military action.

In a shocking incident, a two-year-old boy died due to starvation almost two weeks after his father succumbed to a heart attack.

His family revealed that Bronson Battersby was found dead curled up alongside his 60-year-old father, Kenneth, at their residence in the United Kingdom's Lincolnshire on Jan 9.

This was 14 days after they were last seen.

The Lincolnshire County Council launched a rapid review into the death of Bronson who was indexed as vulnerable and was also subject to checks at least once a month by the social services.

The tragic incident came to light following social services' visit to the deceased's rented house on Jan 2 after speaking to Kenneth on Dec 27 where they&nbsp;did not receive any response.&nbsp;

A social worker again went to their residence unannounced and contacted the police as there was still no answer.

The bodies were discovered after the worker barged into the house using a key from the landlord days later, according to the Sun.

A United States-owned ship was struck by a missile off the coast of Yemen on Monday (Jan 15), a UK security agency and maritime risk company said.

This comes a day after Houthi rebels launched a cruise missile targeting a US destroyer.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations security agency on its website reported that a "vessel hit from above by a missile" in the Gulf of Aden without providing further details.

UK maritime risk company Ambrey said that a fire broke out on board the Marshall Islands-flagged, US-owned bulk carrier, further informing that no one was hurt in the incident and that the ship was still seaworthy.

The United Kingdom is set to label the Sunni Islamist political organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir as a designated terrorist group. The group had organised several pro-Palestinian rallies in the country in recent months in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.

The government had initiated the process to impose a ban on the group, said UK's Interior Minister James Cleverly on Monday (Jan 15), claiming that it was anti-Semitic and also promoted "terrorism".&nbsp;

The organisation is already banned in Bangladesh, Egypt, Germany, Pakistan and several Central Asian and Arab countries.

"Hizb ut-Tahrir is an anti-Semitic organisation that actively promotes and encourages terrorism, including praising and celebrating the appalling 7 October attacks (on Israel)," Cleverly said.

President Joe Biden on Thursday (Jan 11) announced that a coalition led by the US and UK launched air strikes targeting Houthis in Yemen in a "defensive action", in the wake of escalating attacks by the Iran-backed rebels on vessels in the Red Sea.&nbsp;

Five people were killed and six others were wounded in the missile strikes carried out by the US and UK, said the Iran-backed Houthi forces&nbsp;on Friday (Jan 12). "The raids led to the death of five martyrs and the injury of six others from our armed forces," said Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, on X.

Biden warned he "will not hesitate" to give orders for further military action, if required. The air strikes were made on various cities in Yemen, where the Houthis are controlling a good amount of territory, reported news agency AFP.

Australia also provided personnel support to the strikes, which&nbsp;involved various Tomahawk missiles and fighter jets, according to the reports.

"Today, at my direction, US military forces -- together with the United Kingdom and with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands - successfully conducted strikes against several targets in Yemen used by Houthi rebels to endanger freedom of navigation in one of the world's most vital waterways," Biden said, using an alternate spelling of Huthi.

He said that the strikes are a "direct response" to "unprecedented" attacks launched by the Houthis, "including the use of anti-ship ballistic missiles for the first time in history".

"These attacks have endangered US personnel, civilian mariners, and our partners, jeopardised trade, and threatened freedom of navigation," Biden said, emphasising that Washington and its allies "will not tolerate attacks on our personnel or allow hostile actors to imperil freedom of navigation."

As restrictions on visa routes came into force on Monday (Jan 1), the United Kingdom has banned the "unreasonable practice" of overseas students bringing their families to the nation. The decision is set to affect thousands of Indian nationals who represent the largest international student group in the UK.

<h2>A cut in migration</h2>

On Monday, announcing the move, British Home Secretary James Cleverly said the ban would cut migration by tens of thousands.

"This government is delivering on its commitment to the British public to cut migration. We have set out a tough plan to rapidly bring numbers down, control our borders and prevent people from manipulating our immigration system, which will come into force throughout this year," he said.

"Today, a major part of that plan comes into effect, ending the unreasonable practice of overseas students bringing their family members to the UK. This will see migration falling rapidly by the tens of thousands and contribute to our overall strategy to prevent 300,000 people from coming to the UK."

In a post on X, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced,&nbsp;"From today, the majority of foreign university students cannot bring family members to the UK."

"In 2024, we're already delivering for the British people," said the leader who next year will face general elections that may end or extend his stay at 10 Downing Street. &nbsp;

Another post by the UK Home Office stated, "We are fully committed to seeing a decisive cut in migration."

<h2>The ban</h2>

It was introduced in September 2022 by Britain's former home secretary, Suella Braverman.

At the time, in an interview, Braverman said that dependents were "piggybacking" on student visas and "not contributing to growing our economy".

Experts have previously expressed their concern about the tough restrictions.&nbsp;

Naomi Goldshtein, director and solicitor at Fragomen immigration lawyers, as quoted by Inside Higher Ed, said that the full scope of the decision is not known, but that placing such "harsh restrictions" on international students could end in long-term disruption for short-term gain.

"When compared to the ability of students, for example in the US and Canada, to have their spouse and dependent children join them for the duration of their studies, it underscores the fact that many students with families may look to complete their education elsewhere," said Goldshtein.

As restrictions on visa routes came into force on Monday (Jan 1), the United Kingdom has banned the "unreasonable practice" of overseas students bringing their families to the nation. The decision is set to affect thousands of Indian nationals who represent the largest international student group in the UK. A cut in migration On Monday, announcing the move, British Home Secretary James Cleverly said the ban would cut migration by tens of thousands. "This government is delivering on its commitment to the British public to cut migration. We have set out a tough plan to rapidly bring numbers down, control our borders and prevent people from manipulating our immigration system, which will come into force throughout this year," he said. In a post on X, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced, "From today, the majority of foreign university students cannot bring family members to the UK." Thousands of Indian nationals to be affected as UK bans dependents of foreign students

With the winter season approaching, it is estimated that about one in three children in Afghanistan will be affected by crisis-level hunger as the United Kingdom cut down on its aid for the Taliban-ruled country by approximately 60 per cent this year.

As per the latest figures released by the global hunger monitoring system Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), almost eight million children in the war-torn country will step into the new year without sufficient food and will have to live without ample winter clothing in freezing conditions.&nbsp;

The families are worried about the survival of their kids as last year the cold winter claimed the lives of at least 160 people in the country where the temperatures dropped to minus 37 degrees Celsius.

“Our homes are not usable, and we don’t know how we can survive this winter. The winter is approaching and it is too cold in these places. It will be covered with snow for weeks, the ways to travel will be blocked and these areas will be freezing,” the Independent quoted resident Aslam, who is the father of three currently living in a tent, as saying.

“Sometimes we don’t have bread to eat, and we sleep hungry. Seeing my child getting weak day by day and crying for food is devastating,” said Salma, a mother of a seven-month-old infant who had to rush her child to a clinic run by the UK-based humanitarian organisation according to the Independent.

Hundreds of Afghans who have been forced to flee Pakistan since October this year, are at present surviving in makeshift camps and are being taken care of by humanitarian aid workers.

The health workers are also making efforts to keep respiratory diseases at bay.

“Our physicians reported that it gets cold at night, and it is difficult to ensure the well-being of children inside the tents,” said Arshad Malik, the country director of Save the Children, heading operations in Afghanistan, as per the Independent.

“This problem can negatively affect the health of both the child and the mother. We are afraid that the severe respiratory infections are highly likely due to prolonged exposure to dust storms, enclosed smoky shelters, other sick people, and extremely cold weather, as many families have travelled to Afghanistan in open, overcrowded trucks,” the Independent quotes him as saying.

The United Kingdom had slashed the aid for Afghanistan in the month of May this year by more than half, directly hitting the Afghans who were benefitting from the international funding.

Two 16-year-olds on Wednesday (Dec 20) were found guilty of the murder of a 16-year-old transgender girl who died in a "frenzied and ferocious" knife attack.&nbsp;

The girl, identified as Brianna Ghey, was stabbed 28 times reportedly in her head, neck, back and chest in Warrington, northwest England in February. Her body was discovered by dog walkers in a park.&nbsp;

The teenagers were found guilty unanimously by a jury at Manchester crown court. They are known as Girl X and Boy Y to protect their identities as they cannot be named because of their ages.&nbsp;

The court heard during the trial how the pair discussed killing Ghey in the days and weeks before she died. Justice Amanda Yip, who is the judge, said she would sentence the pair next month. The case drew international attention and shock in Britain, given the young age of the pair arrested.&nbsp;

Yip warned the two defendants and said, "I will have to impose a life sentence. What I have to decide is the minimum amount of time you will be required to serve before you might be considered for release."&nbsp;

The court heard how one of the accused, girl X, had downloaded an internet browser app that allowed her to enjoy watching videos of the torture and murder of real people, in "red rooms" on the "dark web".

The court was told that the girl grew an interest in serial killers, making notes on their methods, and admitted enjoying "dark fantasies" about killing and torture.&nbsp;

As per prosecutors, the pair later drew up a "kill list" of four other youths they intended to harm, until Ghey had the "misfortune" to be befriended by girl X, who became "obsessed" with her.&nbsp;

Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak received a huge relief for now as the lawmakers on Tuesday (Dec 12) voted in favour of the government's latest plans to send migrants to Rwanda. The plans emerged as a massive problem for Sunak as it has split the ruling Conservative party.&nbsp;

The emergency bill was the government's response to the Supreme Court's unanimous decision in November which said that deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda was unconstitutional under international law.&nbsp;

The parliamentary vote saw 313 MPs vote for the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill, with 269 against.&nbsp;

Sunak's plan is part of wider government action to reduce record levels of regular and irregular immigration. The immigration issue is expected to take centre stage at next year's election.&nbsp;

The bill has led to Tory infighting, something similar to what the world saw during the Brexit voting. But still, Sunak sought to to declare Rwanda safe despite concerns from human rights monitors, and removing legal challenges to deportation orders.&nbsp;

As per the hardline right-wingers, the proposals are not tough enough, while more liberal Tories are concerned they could see the UK break international law if they are amended down the line.&nbsp;

Temporary relief for Rishi Sunak as lawmakers vote in favour of govt's Rwanda migrant plan

UK's immigration minister Robert Jenrick on Wednesday (Dec 6) resigned from his position, said Interior Minister James Cleverly after the government published draft legislation which was aimed at deploying the Rwandan migrant deportation scheme.

On being asked by a lawmaker in parliament to confirm if Jenrick had resigned, Cleverly said: "That has been confirmed."

Jenrick, who had held the position of the immigration minister since the month of October last year, was not present in parliament as Cleverly delivered a statement on the proposed legislation.

His resignation came after Rwanda released a statement warning that it would pull out of a treaty to accept migrants if the UK fails to respect international law.

Jenrick quit after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's administration published emergency legislation which was designed to make sure Rwanda is considered a safe country after Supreme Court judges in the UK deemed it wasn't.

<h2>'Strong disagreements'</h2>

In his resignation, Jenrick said that he had quit due to "strong disagreements with the direction" of the government's policy on immigration.

He wrote a letter to PM Sunak saying that the proposed laws were "a triumph of hope over experience".

"The stakes for the country are too high for us not to pursue the stronger protections required to end the merry-go-round of legal challenges which risk paralysing the scheme and negating its intended deterrent," he wrote.

Cleverly on Tuesday (Dec 5) signed the new migrant treaty with Rwanda.

Speaking after the signing of the treaty, Cleverly said there was no "credible" reason to block the deportation flights and that he hoped that "we can now move quickly", referring to the backlog of aliens.&nbsp;

Last month, the UK Supreme Court ruled that such a move violates the international human rights enshrined in domestic legislation. One of the biggest points raised by the court was that the asylum seekers would then be deported back to their home nations from where they had escaped the torturous conditions.&nbsp;

To mitigate the SC's concerns, the new treaty states that anyone sent to Rwanda will be given permanent leave to remain there even if their asylum application failed, as per the Financial Times.

UK immigration minister Robert Jenrick resigns over Rwanda bill

Britain's&nbsp;armed&nbsp;forces&nbsp;face an equipment funding shortfall of 17 billion pounds ($21.6 billion) over the next 10 years, a public spending watchdog said on Monday, a concern for defence chiefs at a time of heightened geopolitical risks.

The National Audit Office (NAO) put the estimate for the budget for new weapons and equipment at 305.5 billion pounds for 2023-2033, 16.9 billion pounds over budget, the largest deficit since its first report in 2012.

Soaring costs in nuclear and naval programmes, as Britain works on a replacement nuclear deterrent, as well as high inflation have pushed up the future budget, the NAO said.

This had resulted in a "marked deterioration" in the Ministry of Defence's (MOD) financial position.

Russia's war in Ukraine has highlighted the need for extra military spending across Europe, with Britain an important ally and provider of military equipment to Kyiv. It has also been investing in improving its own equipment readiness and expanding munitions facilities.

Defence Minister Grant Shapps said in response to the watchdog's report that while the government was forecasting budgetary pressure, "the department is confident it can live within its equipment budget".

There were also scenarios in which the MOD would have a surplus over 10 years, he said.

The government raised spending on defence by an extra 5 billion pounds earlier this year, increasing it to about 2.25% of gross domestic product this year and next. It had been about 2%.

Shapps said that the NAO's report did not take into account the government's aspiration to raise defence spending to 2.5% of GDP when economic conditions allowed.

"The Ministry of Defence acknowledges that its Equipment Plan for 2023–2033 is unaffordable," NAO head Gareth Davies said in a statement.

NAO said decisions over scrapping or scaling back projects likely to be deemed "unaffordable" should not be deferred as this would risk "poor value for money".

The budget deficit could be even higher, the NAO said, because the equipment plan it studied does not include things such as the cost of developing new capabilities or extending the life of some equipment including combat vehicles such as the Warrior and Challenger 2.

Britain's armed forces face an equipment funding shortfall of 17 billion pounds ($21.6 billion) over the next 10 years, a public spending watchdog said on Monday, a concern for defence chiefs at a time of heightened geopolitical risks.

Britain's armed forces face an equipment funding shortfall of 17 billion pounds ($21.6 billion) over the next 10 years, a public spending watchdog said on Monday, a concern for defence chiefs at a time of heightened geopolitical risks. In the ongoing United Kingdom's COVID-19 inquiry, cabinet minister Michael Gove said that COVID-19 may have been “man-made” and further admitted the country was not prepared to deal with the pandemic.

Speaking in the inquiry, the former chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster said, “We were not well prepared as we should have been ideally. I think that is true.”

“Again, it’s in the nature of the fact that the virus was novel and, indeed, I think this probably goes beyond the remit of the Inquiry this, a significant body of judgement that believes that the virus itself was man-made and that presents sort of challenges as well,” he added.

United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak cancelled a meeting with his Greek counterpart scheduled to take place on Tuesday (November 28) over the Parthenon Sculptures, also known as the Elgin Marbles, triggering a diplomatic row between the two nations.&nbsp;

Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his disappointment over the last-minute cancellation of a bilateral meeting in London set to discuss their long-running dispute over the Parthenon Marbles. While speaking to reporters, Mitsotakis said that he was "deeply disappointed by the abrupt cancellation" of the meeting and he also rejected an alternative meeting with the deputy prime minister.&nbsp;

In a brief statement, the Greek leader said: "I would like to express my displeasure at the British Prime Minister's cancellation of our meeting just a few hours before it was due to take place."&nbsp;

He further told reporters on Monday evening that "those who firmly believe in the correctness and justice of their positions are never hesitant to engage in constructive argumentation and debate". The Greek PM added: "Greece and Britain share longstanding ties of friendship, and the scope of our bilateral relations is extensive."&nbsp;

"Our positions on the matter of the Parthenon Sculptures are well-known. I had anticipated engaging in a discussion with my British counterpart on this issue, as well as addressing significant global challenges such as the situations in Gaza and Ukraine, the climate crisis, and migration," Mitsotakis added.&nbsp;

A Downing Street spokesperson said that the "UK-Greece relationship is hugely important", without referring to the marbles issue.&nbsp;

As quoted by the news agency AFP, the spokesperson cited joint work within NATO and "tackling shared challenges like illegal migration" and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. "The deputy prime minister was available to meet with the Greek PM to discuss these important issues," the spokesperson added.&nbsp;

<h2>Cancellation of the meeting&nbsp;</h2>

The scheduled meeting was cancelled a day after Mitsotakis told BBC that the marbles should be returned. He compared the Parthenon Sculptures to the Mona Lisa painting, as he said that to have some of the artefacts in London's British Museum and the rest in Athens was like cutting the portrait by&nbsp;Leonardo da Vinci in half. He said it was not a question of ownership but "reunification".&nbsp;

"We have not made as much progress as I would like in the negotiations. I'm a patient man and we've waited for hundreds of years, and I will persist in these discussions," Mitsotakis told BBC during a programme.&nbsp;

"This is not in my mind an ownership question, this is a reunification argument – where can you best appreciate what is essentially one monument?" he added.&nbsp;

"It's as if I told you that you would cut the Mona Lisa in half, and you will have half of it at the Louvre and half of it at the British Museum, do you think your viewers would appreciate the beauty of the painting in such a way? Well, this is exactly what happened with the Parthenon sculptures," the Greek PM further added.&nbsp;

"We feel that the sculptures belong to Greece and that they were essentially stolen. I think the answer is very clear. They do look better in the Acropolis Museum, a state-of-the-art museum that was built for that purpose," Mitsotakis said.&nbsp;

<h2>Sculptures of the Parthenon&nbsp;</h2>

The sculptures were taken from the Parthenon temple at the Acropolis in Greece in the early 19th century by the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, then ruling Greece, Thomas Bruce, the Earl of Elgin. For a very long time, Athens has campaigned for their return. The main sculptural decorations of the Parthenon include the Chryselephantine statue of Athena, the East and West pediments, the metopes of the peristyle, and the continuous frieze of the cellar. The sculptures were exhibited on the exterior of the temple.&nbsp;

As defined by AncientGreece.org, the pediments of the Parthenon were decorated with elaborate marble statues dedicated to mythological aspects of Athena. The report stated that the huge sculptures were arranged in dynamic compositions in order to fill the confined triangular spaces. However, the sculptures of the pediments (aetomata) were reported to be damaged severely when the Parthenon was converted to a Christian church.&nbsp;

Notably, Athens claims that the marble was stolen, however, Britain denies it. The issue remains to be discussed with an aim to arrive at a consensus and has been a source of contention between the countries for decades.&nbsp;

The Acropolis Museum was built by Greece in 2009 to keep the historic sculptures that remained in the country, along with other artefacts. The Greeks wanted the rest of the sculptures&nbsp;to complete the collection.&nbsp;

UK-based media reports said that Mitsotakis had said that he would raise the issue with Sunak during the now-cancelled meeting on Tuesday.&nbsp;His remarks came after he met with the Labour leader Keir Starmer. As reported by The Financial Times, Starmer said he would not block a "mutually acceptable" loan deal between both countries for the sculptures. An important point - Starmer represents the Holborn and St Pancras constituency, where the British Museum is located.&nbsp;

Earlier this year in March, Sunak ruled out any change to a law that stops the British Museum from handing the marble back to Greece permanently. Sunak's spokesman said earlier Monday that the UK has "no plans" to facilitate their return to Athens.&nbsp;

However, it can happen as the legislation won't deny a loan.&nbsp;

The United Kingdom's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) said on Tuesday (Nov 14) that artificial intelligence (AI) posed a threat to the upcoming national election.

The United Kingdom's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) said on Tuesday (Nov 14) that artificial intelligence (AI) posed a threat to the upcoming national election. In its annual review, the NCSC said that this year saw the emergence of state-aligned actors as a new cyber threat to critical national infrastructure such as power, water and internet networks. "We live in a dangerous, volatile world. The events of the last year have demonstrated the extent to which geopolitical crises and technological change impact us all, threatening not just our traditional security but our economic security," the report said. The year 2022 saw the emergence of a new class of cyber adversaries in the form of state-aligned actors, who are often sympathetic to Russia’s further invasion of Ukraine and are ideologically, rather than financially, motivated. 'Russian actors sought to interfere in 2019 poll' "The UK government assesses that it is almost certain that Russian actors sought to interfere in the 2019 general election," NCSC said, and with the upcoming elections in the UK and the United States, "we can expect to see the integrity of our systems tested again." The centre also said that the UK and its allies could not be complacent to the threat of foreign cyber interference and attempts at influencing the democratic process. In the UK, the next general election will take place before the end of January 2025. Local and mayoral elections are scheduled in May 2024. The NCSC said that when the election happens, the process of casting a vote is completed using pencil and paper, significantly reducing the chances of a cyber actor affecting the integrity of the results. "However, the act of voting marks the end of the sprint, as a significant amount of cyber-resilience building needs to take place before this to secure the services which support our elections and the integrity of an open public discourse," it added. The government has established the Joint Election Security Preparedness Unit (JESP), which takes overall responsibility for coordinating electoral security and drives the government’s election preparedness. Threat posed by AI According to the NCSC, technologies like AI might pose from those looking to interfere or otherwise undermine trust in the UK's democratic system. It said the next election would be the first to take place against the backdrop of significant advances in AI. However, rather than presenting new risks, AI's ability to enable existing techniques posed the biggest threat. The centre gave an example- "large language models will almost certainly be used to generate fabricated content, AI-created hyperrealistic bots will make the spread of disinformation easier and the manipulation of media for use in deepfake campaigns will likely become more advanced." The NCSC also said that even though the government was committed to countering the threat from online harms, it was important for people "to be aware that the threat landscape is changing and as with any kind of new technology, alongside realising the benefits, there is always potential for misuse."

The United Kingdom's top Court will rule whether Rishi Sunak's government plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda is lawful.

Rwanda policy: UK's top court pivotal decision on migrants

The UK government has proposed plans to include India in the expanded list of 'safe states' which will escalate the process of bringing illegal Indian migrants back to their country and rule out their chances of getting asylum in the country.

India and Georgia were the countries which were proposed to be added to the list in a&nbsp;draft legislation tabled in the House of Commons on Wednesday (Nov 8).

The UK Home Office stated that the step is being taken to strengthen the immigration system of the country and help in preventing abuse by people who make unfounded protection claims.

“We must stop people making dangerous and illegal journeys to the UK from fundamentally safe countries,” stated UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

“Expanding this list will allow us to more swiftly remove people with no right to be here and sends a clear message that if you come here illegally, you cannot stay. We remain committed to delivering the measures in our Illegal Migration Act, which will play a part in the fight against illegal migration,” she added.

The step is in accordance with the measures being taken to meet the pledge of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to “stop the boats” of migrants which are illegally reaching the shores of the country.

The Home Office stated that there has been an increase in Indian and Georgian small boat arrivals over the last year.

"Deeming these countries safe will mean that if an individual arrives illegally from either one, we will not admit their claim to the UK asylum system,” the Home Office stated.

The UK government has proposed plans to include India in the expanded list of 'safe states' which will escalate the process of bringing illegal Indian migrants back to their country and rule out their chances of getting asylum in the country. India and Georgia were the countries which were proposed to be added to the list in a draft legislation tabled in the House of Commons on Wednesday (Nov 8). "Deeming these countries safe will mean that if an individual arrives illegally from either one, we will not admit their claim to the UK asylum system,” the Home Office stated. India to be included in UK safe states list, no asylum rights for country's illegal migrants

The United States and Britain on Friday (Oct 20) appealed to India not to push Canada for reducing its diplomatic presence in New Delhi and expressed their concern over the pull out of 41 diplomats by Ottawa amid the ongoing dispute over the killing of Khalistani terrorist and Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Canada had alleged that the Indian government was involved in the murder of Nijjar which took place in Vancouver in June. India has&nbsp;refuted the allegations.

"We are concerned by the departure of Canadian diplomats from India, in response to the Indian government's demand of Canada to significantly reduce its diplomatic presence in India," said US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

"Resolving differences requires diplomats on the ground. We have urged the Indian government not to insist upon a reduction in Canada's diplomatic presence and to cooperate in the ongoing Canadian investigation. We expect India to uphold its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, including with respect to privileges and immunities enjoyed by accredited members of Canada's diplomatic mission," the statement added.

Washington had earlier stated that it took the allegations of Canada seriously and had appealed to India to co-operate with Canada in investigating the killing of Nijjar. The analysts have suggested that the US and the UK do not wish to damage relations with India, which they see as a counterbalance to their rival Asian nation China.

However, the statements released by the US State Department and Britain's Foreign Office on Friday have so far been the most direct criticism made by them over New Delhi on the issue.

"We do not agree with the decisions taken by the Indian government that have resulted in a number of Canadian diplomats departing India," stated a spokesperson for Britain's Foreign Office.

Recently, Canada withdrew its 41 diplomats from India after Ottawa was asked by New Delhi to cut down its diplomatic presence following a row over Nijjar's killing. On Friday, Canada stated that it was suspending in-person operations at consulates in various cities of India for some time and said that there could be delays in visa processing.

Citing the Vienna Convention, Britain's Foreign Office said, "The unilateral removal of the privileges and immunities that provide for the safety and security of diplomats is not consistent with the principles or the effective functioning of the Vienna Convention."

<h2>Trudeau says 'India violating Vienna Convention'</h2>

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the decision of India to revoke diplomatic immunity to 41 Canadian diplomats in India was a “violation of the Vienna Convention governing diplomacy” and added that it would impact “millions of Canadians who trace their origins to the Indian subcontinent.”

While addressing an event in the town of Brampton in the Greater Toronto Area or GTA on Friday (Oct 20), Trudeau stated, “The actions that the Government of India took this week are themselves contrary to international law. The Government of India decided to unilaterally revoke the diplomatic immunity of 40 Canadian diplomats in India. This is a violation of the Vienna Convention governing diplomacy. This is them choosing to contravene a very fundamental principle of international law and diplomacy.”

Further speaking about the Indo-Canadian diaspora, he said, “It also has very real impacts on the millions of people who travel back and forth between India, as students, as family members, for weddings, for businesses, for the growing trade ties between our countries.”

Earlier, the Indian foreign ministry had stated that it had not violated the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.

"The state of our bilateral relations, the much higher number of Canadian diplomats in India, and their continued interference in our internal affairs warrant a parity in mutual diplomatic presence in New Delhi and Ottawa," said the ministry, in a statement.

US, UK support Canada amid row with India over curtailed diplomatic presence

A near 20,000-vote Conservative majority was overturned by the Labour Party in Tamworth as they clinched victory for the first time in the area since a bellwether byelection took place in 1996.

Sarah Edwards from the Labour Party clinched 11,719 votes ahead of Tory candidate Andrew Cooper, who received 10,403 votes, which clearly gave Labour a lead of 1,316 votes. The result was a 23.89 per cent swing to the party of Keir Starmer.

The voter turnout in the by-election was also low at 35.87 per cent, which was a little more than half of the turnout seen in 2019. The byelections of Thursday seemed like a signal for the Labour Party which took away the Tory majority and won Mid Bedfordshire, which was the former seat of Nadine Dorries.

Edwards, in her victory speech, stated that the voters of Tamworth had “sent a clear message to Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives that they have had enough of this failed government, which has crashed the economy and destroyed our public services. The people of Tamworth have made it clear. It’s time for change.”

Conservative candidate Cooper reached the counting hall after other candidates had reached and were standing on the stage and waiting for the announcement of the results.

Just before he arrived, Conservative party operatives were warned by the council officials that the declaration of results could happen without his presence. One Tory staffer was heard commenting that Cooper got lost in the parking area.

UK's ruling Conservatives suffer major setback as Labour win second by-election

Xbox maker&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;closed its $69 billion deal for Activision Blizzard on Friday, swelling its heft in the video-gaming market with best-selling titles including "Call of Duty" to better compete with industry leader Sony.

Britain finally cleared&nbsp;Microsoft's acquisition of Activision earlier in the day after it forced the Xbox owner to sell the steaming rights to address its competition concerns.

The deal was blocked in April by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) which said it could give the US&nbsp;computing giant a stranglehold over the nascent cloud gaming market.

But the regulator ripped up its play book by reopening the case after&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;agreed to sell the streaming rights to Activision's games to Ubisoft Entertainment, with remedies to ensure the terms were enforceable.

The deal was the biggest test of the CMA's global power to take on the tech giants since Britain left the European Union.

It said "sticking to its guns" in the face of criticism from the merging companies had delivered an outcome that was better for competition, consumers and economic growth.

The CMA said&nbsp;Microsoft's concession on streaming was a "gamechanger", adding that it was the only competition agency globally to have delivered this outcome.

"The new deal will stop&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;from locking up competition in cloud gaming as this market takes off, preserving competitive prices and services for UK cloud gaming customers," it said in a statement.

Microsoft&nbsp;announced the deal in early 2022, aiming to boost its growth in console, mobile, PC, and cloud gaming to compete with the likes of Tencent as well as PlayStation-owner Sony.

The US&nbsp;Federal Trade Commission opposed the deal but after failing to stop it, the CMA was left standing alone.

The FTC is fighting on, but&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;has said it will not stop it closing the deal.

The European Commision gave the green light in May when it accepted&nbsp;Microsoft's commitments to license Activision's games like "Overwatch" and "World of Warcraft" to other platforms.

<h2>'Stuck to our guns'</h2>

The CMA's block in April drew fury from the merging parties, with&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;saying that Britain was closed for business.

The British government only offered limited support to the CMA, with the Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt saying that while he did not want to undermine its independence, regulators also needed to focus on encouraging investment.

CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell said the regulator had "delivered a clear message to&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;that the deal would be blocked unless they comprehensively addressed our concerns and we stuck to our guns on that."

She said the CMA took its decisions "free from political influence" and it would not be "swayed by corporate lobbying".

"Businesses and their advisers should be in no doubt that the tactics employed by&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;are no way to engage with the CMA," she said.

"Microsoft&nbsp;had the chance to restructure during our initial investigation but instead continued to insist on a package of measures that we told them simply wouldn't work."

Quilter Cheviot equity analyst Ben Barringer said the CMA would see it as a victory, but it would need to be careful not to over-regulate the tech sector.

"There are fears the UK is a bad place to do business and the tech industry in particular will be watching its moves closely," he said.

Microsoft&nbsp;said it was "grateful for the CMA's thorough review and decision".

"We have now crossed the final regulatory hurdle to close this acquisition, which we believe will benefit players and the gaming industry worldwide," Vice Chair and President Brad Smith said.

Activision Blizzard said: "The CMA's official approval is great news for our future with&nbsp;Microsoft, and we look forward to becoming part of the Xbox Team."

The European Commission said the new commitments given by&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;to the CMA did not interfere with its EU commitments.

The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday (Aug 11) addressed several issues including Indian nationals trapped in Niger, the case related to baby Ariha Shah's return from Germany, Chinese aggression, the Pakistan team's presence in the upcoming ICC World Cup and security concerns in the UK.

Here are the important takeaways:

<h2>1.&nbsp;MEA asks Indian nationals in Niger to leave country</h2>

Ministry of External Affairs, on Friday, issued an advisory asking the Indian nationals whose presence is not critical in Niger, to leave the country as early as possible, following a military coup against President Mohamed Bazoum in the African nation.

During a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that the Indian government is very closely observing the ongoing situation in Niger. He also urged people to reconsider their travel plans in case they were travelling to Niamey.

"Government of India is closely monitoring ongoing developments in Niger. In light of the prevailing situation, Indian nationals whose presence is not essential are advised to leave the country as soon as possible. They may bear in mind that airspace is currently closed. When departing through a land border, utmost precautions may be taken to ensure safety and security. Those who may be planning travel to Niger in the coming days are also similarly advised to reconsider their travel plans until the situation normalizes," said MEA.

"All those Indian nationals who have not registered with the Indian embassy in Niamey (Niger capital) are strongly advised to do so expeditiously. Indian nationals can reach emergency contact in the embassy of India in Niamey: +22799759975", added MEA.

On being asked about the number of Indians stuck in Niger, Bagchi said, "About 250 Indians are there. The MEA spokesperson, at the media briefing, also spoke in reference to the threats received by the pro-Khalistani elements in London ahead of Independence Day.&nbsp;

He assured that the issue of security is an ongoing conversation between the Indian government and the United Kingdom stating that New Delhi wants UK to take concrete measures to secure its diplomatic premises and its personnel. "In the context of 15th August, we always have additional measures that we request. But in this case, in some cases, we have seen some threats, but I don't want to discuss security measures per se. Certainly, we have been emphasising the need for the UK side to take action against extremist and radical elements, particularly those who are inciting violence and posing a security threat,” he further said.
&nbsp;&nbsp;
Bagchi was asked about the new funding of 95,000 pounds announced by the UK government invested for countering pro-Khalistani supporters, to which he replied, “It’s an announcement by them for their internal thing, so I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to comment on that”.

UK's Security Minister, Tom Tugendhat, who is in India for a three-day visit to bolster bilateral cooperation on security initiatives, announced new funding during a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar on Thursday, in order to enhance the United Kingdom's capability to tackle Pro-Khalistan Extremism.

The British High Commission released a statement saying that the investment worth 95,000-pound will improve the government's understanding of the threat posed by Pro-Khalistan Extremism, complementing the joint work already underway between the UK and India through the Joint Extremism Task Force.

Security Minister, Tom Tugendhat said, “The living bridge between India
and the UK reflects our deep and enduring friendship. As the world’s oldest and largest democracies, we have many shared opportunities to make the world a safer and more prosperous place."

“A deeper partnership between our two nations means we can more effectively tackle the security threats we both face. I’m committed to working together to enhance our understanding of and capabilities against extremism, whatever form it takes," he added.

“The unique connection between our people brings both huge opportunities and security challenges. Through mechanisms like the Joint Extremism Task Force we are acting jointly on countering threats, including pro-Khalistan extremism, as well as on migration, to keep our people safe,” Ellis said.

<h2>3.&nbsp;India pressing German authorities to send Ariha back</h2>

MEA also underlined that the ministry is continuously making efforts and pressing the German authorities to send baby Ariha Shah back to India.

"As we had mentioned earlier, we continue to remain engaged with German authorities on this case. Let me reiterate that we believe that the child who's currently in foster care, as you mentioned, is being denied her cultural rights and her rights as an Indian citizen. We will continue to press the German authorities for the early return of the child to India", said MEA. &nbsp;

<h2>4.&nbsp;Issues in South China Sea need to be resolved peacefully</h2>

India said that issues in the South China Sea need to be resolved peacefully, following an incident where water cannon was used at a Philippines supply boat by a Chinese coast guard ship.

"Let me emphasize where we are on the South China Sea developments. We've always felt that the issues need to be resolved, disputes peacefully, and the rules-based order, and we would certainly urge parties to follow that as well as ensure that no such incidents do not happen," Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said when asked whether the tension between China and Philippines is concerning India.&nbsp;

He further stated, "I mentioned specifically that I have already made a comment regarding the need to adhere to international law. I think I'd leave it at that."&nbsp;

India: From Niger coup to radical elements in UK, key takeaways from MEA briefing

Rail passengers across the United Kingdom are likely to face further disruption this week as another wave of strikes is being planned by train drivers union Aslef and Tube workers union Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT).

The walkout of this week was timed by members of Aslef to cause disruption in the Conservative Party Conference. On the days of the strike, the unions will force 16 train operating companies to cancel all services.

Meanwhile, a ban on overtime on the days of non-strike by Aslef will further disrupt the network. So far, the union has called 13 one-day strikes amid its ongoing 16-month dispute over pay.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Aslef General Secretary Mick Whelan stated, “While we regret having to take this action – we don’t want to lose a day’s pay, or disrupt passengers, as they try to travel by train – the government, and the employers, have forced us into this position.”

“Our members have not, now, had a pay rise for four years – since 2019 – and that’s not right when prices have soared in that time. Train drivers, perfectly reasonably, want to be able to buy now what they could buy four years ago,” he added.

<h2>Fresh strikes by London Underground workers</h2>

Meanwhile, fresh strikes were announced by London Underground workers in a dispute over working conditions and job cuts.

“Station staff have had enough of having their livelihoods threatened by job losses and attacks on their terms and conditions,” said union’s General Secretary Mick Lynch, as reported by The Telegraph.

“Station staff have a vital role to play assisting vulnerable passengers access the network safely and ensuring that the Tube is a safe environment for passengers. These job cuts and attacks on conditions are going to lead to more unstaffed stations, temporary closures and rising passenger anger,” he added.

“TfL has had its budgets slashed but the savings made by these station staff cuts will be negatable and will lead to shortages that are unacceptable. This strike action will lead to the Tube being shut down and we call on Mayor Sadiq Khan to meet us urgently to discuss this matter,” he further stated.

The passengers of the National Rail were asked to expect “significant disruption” on strike days. It is also likely that the services will remain disrupted and start on the day immediately after.

The government has been criticised by the union for not being able to meet its negotiating team - Assistant General Secretary Simon Weller, General Secretary Mick Whelan, and Executive Committee president Dave Calfe.
