Former United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson's allies are heavily criticized by a Commons committee after they launched a campaign to undermine the committee's investigation into Boris Johnson's claim.

Boris Johnson and other UK ministers admit to a gap in planning

London's Court of Appeal has ruled that the United Kingdom's government's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is unlawful. Two of the three-judge panel have ruled that Rwanda is not safe. UK interior minister Suella Braverman urges people not to speculate on Nottingham stabbing attack

Former British prime minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie hosted a close friend who helped them plan their wedding when Covid restrictions were in place, a Guardian report has claimed.

The report claims that the husband-wife met Dixie Maloney, a corporate events organiser, at their mansion on May 7, 2021, when indoor gatherings between different households were prohibited. Maloney informally helped the couple plan the wedding which took place three weeks later in the Downing Street garden.

At the time, Carrie was pregnant with the couple’s second child, who was born in December that year. The Tory leader's spokesperson said Maloney's stay at the mansion was 'entirely lawful' as she was there for childcare reasons at the time.

“This was entirely lawful, and it was covered by relevant provisions in the Covid regulations. To suggest otherwise is totally untrue.”

Johnson has been under heavy scrutiny since it was first revealed that he openly flouted Covid rules that stopped ordinary folks from meeting their ill friends, and relatives or even attending funeral activities. Indoor gatherings were only allowed if they were “reasonably necessary” for work purposes, informal childcare or to provide care or assistance to a vulnerable person.

To suggest otherwise is totally untrue.” Johnson has been under heavy scrutiny since it was first revealed that he openly flouted Covid rules that stopped ordinary folks from meeting their ill friends, and relatives or even attending funeral activities. Indoor gatherings were only allowed if they were “reasonably necessary” for work purposes, informal childcare or to provide care or assistance to a vulnerable person.
Indian tech giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has won a 10-year contract to administer and enhance customer experiences for the Teachers' Pension Scheme in England and Wales.

This is the United Kingdom's second-largest public sector pension scheme, serving over 2 million members.

The exact financial size of the deal remains undisclosed. However, industry sources cited by Moneycontrol indicate that it is a substantial contract, reinforcing TCS's position as a leading provider of IT services.

The American Bully has rapidly emerged as a prominent dog breed in the UK in recent times. Although not officially recognised by major UK dog associations, the increasing frequency of news coverage, often depicting tragic incidents involving these dogs, indicates the American Bully's growing presence in the country.

As per the Guardian, the American Bully is a modern variation of the American Bulldog and is typically available in four different types: standard, pocket, classic, and XL. These variations differ in size, with those taller than 50cm (20 inches) falling into the XL category.

Tragic incidents involving the breed

In January, a tragic incident occurred in Surrey where a 28-year-old dog walker named Natasha Johnston was fatally attacked while walking eight dogs. The investigation revealed that one of the dogs, an American Bully XL owned by Johnston, was responsible for her death. The dog was subsequently euthanised following a forensic veterinary report.

In a similar incident last month, Jonathan Hogg, a 37-year-old dog caretaker from Greater Manchester, was playing with an American Bully XL when it suddenly attacked him, targeting his throat. Hogg later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
United Kingdom's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is facing criticism online for misusing the feature of alt text on Twitter.

Sunak shared a four-picture photo grid on Wednesday which showed cabinet members having a meeting. When a user clicks the images, each of them expands to reveal various things that the government claims to have done.

“We are working day-in and day-out to grow the economy,” wrote Sunak in the caption of the social media post. The alt text field, in which the description is added to make the blind users understand what is present in the image, simply read: “We're growing the economy”.

According to the Help Center article on Twitter, the aim of writing descriptions of images is to be concise and clear, while providing more context to the tweet.

“It's important to capture the action, movement, relationships, noteworthiness, visual details, and anything unique,” it stated. It should be noted that this accessibility feature also works with screen readers.

We are working day-in and day-out to grow the economy. pic.twitter.com/wYgxplNEZm — Rishi Sunak (@RishiSunak) May 17, 2023 × For people who are unaware, alt text is the way in which images are made more accessible to those who have lost their eyesight or are visually impaired. The feature is generally used by social media users to describe the central information and key details in a photo or graphic. ALSO READ | At G7 summit, Sunak says Ukraine must win war, hails Zelensky's attendance at summit However, even though the photos tweeted by Sunak expanded and revealed the list of things which were done by the government, the same information did not appear in the alt text. Because of this, Sunak received backlash from social media users who criticised him for not adding a full description of the images. The approach of the government to the accessibility feature was criticised by charities representing blind people such as the Royal National Institute for Blind (RNIB). 'Worst alt text I've ever seen', say Twitteratis Responding to Sunak's tweet, RNIB tweeted a video demonstration of what the images shared sounded like to blind people who used a screen reader. Other Twitter account holders, which included author Adam Kay, described the misuse of the feature by Sunak as “the worst alt text I've ever seen”. UK's Rishi Sunak faces criticism for misusing Twitter's Alt Text feature

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murthy's consolidated wealth declined in the last 12 months. However, the couple with a net worth of $668 million still remains immune from the cost of living crisis which remains dominant on the political agenda of the United Kingdom.

The power couple has been currently ranked in the 275th position in the Sunday Times Rich List, falling from their 222nd position last year because of the decline in value of their stake in India's IT giant Infosys, which has been founded by Akshata Murthy's father N R Narayana Murthy.

“Over the past year, their wealth has fallen by more than half a million pounds a day. When the pair made their debut on the Rich List 12 months ago, this stake was worth about GBP 690 million. Since then Infosys' shares have plummeted owing to lower revenues from its banking, tech and other clients,” stated an analysis published in the Sunday Times Rich List.

UK PM Rishi Sunak, wife lose $668 million as value of their Infosys stake plummets

The departments of the United Kingdom government spent an estimated amount of 161.7 million pounds ($201 million) on the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth and related events, said the Treasury on Thursday.

The country marked 10 days of national mourning after the longest-reigning monarch of Britain died aged 96 on September 8. After the mourning period, Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral was held on September 19.

During the period, Elizabeth’s coffin was kept in Edinburgh Cathedral before it was shifted to London where around 250,000 citizens had queued for hours to see her coffin kept at Westminster Hall.

Queen Elizabeth’s successor King Charles also went on a tour of four nations of Britain with then-prime minister Liz Truss.

The disclosure comes around the time when the coronation of Elizabeth’s son King Charles was held with much pomp and show, raising many eyebrows over the high amount of money spent on the ceremony at a time when Britishers struggle with the worst cost-of-living crisis.
‘Fake father’ citizenship scam: British men offered money by migrant women to pose as dads of their child

United Kingdom's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak refused to remain committed to the pledge made by Boris Johnson of bringing annual net migration numbers below 250,000 till the next elections, as he argued that handling illegal migration is "undoubtedly the country's priority".

The Conservative Party's 2019 manifesto committed to making sure "overall numbers come down". At the time, the country's net migration remained at 226,000, which was seen as an effective target to meet during this parliament.

While interacting with journalists on his way to the G7 summit in Japan, PM Sunak accepted that he had "inherited some numbers", but he thrice refused to explicitly recommit to cutting down legal immigration in the country to that level.

"I've said I do want to bring legal migration down. I think illegal migration is undoubtedly the country's priority, and you can see all the work I'm putting into that. But on legal migration as well, we are committed to bringing those numbers down,” Sunak said.

Sunak focuses on curbing illegal small boat crossings

Speaking about the meeting he had conducted in Iceland earlier this week, Sunak stated that talks with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had resulted in "a big step forward" in his efforts to stop small boat crossings in the Channel.

"That is of practical value to us in stopping illegal migration - sharing intelligence, operational co-operation will make a difference to our ability to stop the boats, tackle organised crime upstream. That’s a very tangible result of the engagement and diplomacy we conducted,” Sunak said.

Explaining his unwillingness to place a hard target on legal migration levels, PM Sunak said, "The key thing for people is to know [when it comes to legal migration] is why people are here, the circumstances and the terms on which they are here, making sure they contribute, to public services like the NHS for example. Those are all now part of our migration system and they weren't before."

According to media reports, Sunak's focus on curbing illegal small boat crossings and not on setting a specific target for reducing the number of illegal migrants reflects the prime minister's pragmatism.

"His motto is deliver on promises and don't promise what you can't deliver," stated one government official.

United Kingdom's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak refused to remain committed to the pledge made by Boris Johnson of bringing annual net migration numbers below 250,000 till the next elections, as he argued that handling illegal migration is "undoubtedly the country's priority".

ALSO READ | Rishi Sunak taps LinkedIn to boost UK businesses "I've said I do want to bring legal migration down. I think illegal migration is undoubtedly the country's priority, and you can see all the work I'm putting into that. But on legal migration as well, we are committed to bringing those numbers down,” Sunak said. Sunak focuses on curbing illegal small boat crossings Speaking about the meeting he had conducted in Iceland earlier this week, Sunak stated that talks with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had resulted in "a big step forward" in his efforts to stop small boat crossings in the Channel. Those are all now part of our migration system and they weren't before." WATCH | PM Rishi Sunak visits Japanese Naval Base ahead of G7 Summit According to media reports, Sunak's focus on curbing illegal small boat crossings and not on setting a specific target for reducing the number of illegal migrants reflects the prime minister's pragmatism. "His motto is deliver on promises and don't promise what you can't deliver," stated one government official. However, the recent remarks made by the prime minister are likely to stoke tensions in the cabinet where divisions can be seen appearing between those who want to prioritise cutting down overall numbers and those who argue that such measure can limit the country's economic growth.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is being criticised for using a helicopter for a short trip from Southampton to London and back — a distance that according to people could have been covered in just over an hour on the train, UK-based media outlets reported.

The recent splurge of a £1,000-an-hour journey funded by the taxpayer has been labelled a "photo opportunity" as Sunak travelled to Southampton to promote a policy.

Media reports mentioned the flight records that showed that the copter left from RAF Northolt at around 8:53 am (local time) reportedly on May 9, before landing at Wellington Barracks in Westminster to pick up Sunak. Later, it returned to Battersea Heliport in London around 1:00 pm (local time).

As quoted by The Mirror, a Labour source said: "While Keir Starmer was working with 20 new Labour councils to bring in new cost of living action plans, Rishi Sunak was gallivanting around in a helicopter for a journey which would have taken an hour on the train. Last week, the British public told the Prime Minister to get his head out of the clouds - it seems he just isn't listening."

Meanwhile, the prime minister's spokesman defended the trip, saying: "His transport will vary depending on his time and where he's going to make the best use of both his time and in the interest of the taxpayer. Obviously, there's a lot of pressure on his time and he wants to make the most effective use of that time. Sometimes being able to get to and from places quickly is useful."

Cost of living crisis in UK

Such incidents have previously happened in Sunak's tenure in office, as citizens and members of the opposition pointed out his taste for luxury. He used a taxpayer-funded private jet to Scotland to launch "green" tax breaks in January, then he also used the plane to make short trips to Blackpool and Leeds.

The controversy regarding the trip has emerged amid a cost-of-living crisis, which is expected to worsen further as the Bank of England on Thursday (May 11) lifted its key interest rate to the highest level since the 2008 financial crisis. The inflation remained stubbornly high but the economy would now avoid recession this year. The BoE hiked the rate by a quarter-point to 4.5 per cent -- its 12th increase in a row with UK annual inflation stuck above 10 per cent, fuelling a cost-of-living crisis across Britain.

Rishi Sunak faces flak for taking VIP helicopter trip for short distance

British people trapped in Sudan have said they are being forced to make hard choices about whether to fly home without their family members the United Kingdom (UK) government would not allow on flights. This news comes as the government ended its evacuation efforts from the conflict-torn country, after extracting over 2,450 people on dozens of flights.

According to a report by The Guardian on Thursday (May 4), a growing number of British citizens and their children, or Sudanese citizens with British children, have decided to stay in Sudan as their family members have not been allowed to board evacuation flights.

Speaking to The Guardian, Suleiman, a British national, said that a UK government official called him to say that he could be evacuated with his two children only if he left his pregnant wife behind. His children are British nationals, but their mother is a Sudanese citizen.

“He said: ‘I’m sorry, you’re going to fly with your children, but your wife cannot.’ When I told him that’s impossible, the children are dependent on their mother and I can’t leave my wife who has a high-risk pregnancy, he just refused and said that’s all I can do,” Suleiman said, as quoted by The Guardian.

Suleiman decided to remain in Sudan with his children and wife, fearing that the journey to Port Sudan might endanger his wife.

Another British citizen- Roza Mohamed, said how her Sudanese sister Amina, and her three-year-old niece Samrin, were prevented from boarding an evacuation flight out of Port Sudan as Amina lacked a UK visa and was not able to prove Samrin's British citizenship obtained via her father.

The report also pointed out that in some cases, British officials gave the parents of young children visas and allowed them to board. But in others, they turned them away and it is not yet clear why these cases were treated differently.

Meanwhile, some children with British passports were prevented from boarding evacuation flights as their accompanying parents lacked UK visas which were later provided by officials after pressure from British nationals in the UK.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) has been criticised for handling evacuations from Sudan. The report also said that after a week of pressure from the British Medical Association, Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly permitted many NHS doctors and their dependents stranded in Sudan to board evacuation flights from an airstrip north of Khartoum and an additional flight from Port Sudan.

The UK government has repeatedly denied abandoning anyone in Sudan. On Thursday, it announced that it would provide an initial $6.3 million of life-saving aid "to help meet the urgent needs of those fleeing the violence in Sudan.

According to a report by The Guardian on Thursday (May 4), a growing number of British citizens and their children, or Sudanese citizens with British children, have decided to stay in Sudan as their family members have not been allowed to board evacuation flights. Rain Newton-Smith, the new CBI boss said the rebranding was necessary and part of promised “root and branch” reform of the organisation. “Personally, over time, I’m sure we’re going to see a new name for the CBI, but that’s just the wrapper that goes on the outside. What matters is what we do, what we deliver and our purpose,” Newton-Smith was quoted as saying by the Financial Times. The new CBI boss took the reins on Thursday and has been given a month by the board to work up a proposal for the group's future. WATCH | UK PM Rishi Sunak's popularity rising within the conservative party × “The CBI that emerges from this is not going to be the CBI of the past, that is clear. It needs to be a new, a different organisation." The future of the CBI which claims to cumulatively employ seven million people, overseeing 190,000 businesses hangs in the balance after a series of workplace misconduct, harassment and sexual assault problems, including two allegations of rape. Prior to the crisis, the lobbying group enjoyed a key role in discussing as well as shaping the economic policies with the government. However, if Newton-Smith fails to get going from the start, the business might go kaput, according to industry experts. ALSO READ | British business lobby group axes chief over 'misconduct' More than 50 leading firms such as John Lewis, BMW, Tesco, and Sainsbury have either cut or suspended ties with the company already, raising serious questions over its financial future. When quizzed if she was the right person to lead the company into a new era, having served as the CBI's chief economist between 2014 and 2023 - the period when most serious allegations took place, Newton-Smith said she always addressed the 'wrongdoings'. “I’ve always addressed wrongdoing when I’ve seen it, and if any of my staff have ever come to me with issues, I have listened to them and made sure they were supported, and that’s the culture I want to build,” she said. "I wouldn't be coming back into this job if I thought there were things that I had done or hadn't done or hadn't acted thoroughly on it. So that's what's really important to me." While Newton-Smith attempts to steer the ship through choppy waters, British Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has said there is 'no point' engaging with CBI when its own members had deserted them.
The United Kingdom (UK) government's funding worth £ 27 million for Mandarin teaching at branches of Chinese state-linked Confucius Institutes will be stopped. According to a report by the Guardian late Monday, (April 24) the step is expected to be announced by Foreign Secretary James Cleverly later on Tuesday. The report added that the funding would stop but the branches would not be closed.

In July last year, Rishi Sunak, who was then a contender for the prime minister's post, pledged to close the Confucius Institutes in the UK. These institutes promote the teaching of the Chinese language and culture in foreign countries.

And Tuesday's expected decision comes as research showed that a secretive visa scheme had been used to fast-track Chinese government-vetted staff to come to the UK to promote the values of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) at these institutes.

The UK has 30 branches of the Confucius Institutes in total. On Monday, a report by UK-China Transparency, a charity, said that each institute is based in a British university and is a partnership between that British university, a Chinese entity (usually a university), and the Chinese government.

UK expected to stop funding for Mandarin teaching at Confucius Institutes: Reports

Tens of millions of Britons on Sunday received a message and loud alarm as the government tested its first-ever life-saving Emergency Alerts warning system. The message read “Keep Calm and Carry On, this is just a test” and was sent to every 4G and 5G-enabled smartphone in the country.

According to reports, the alert was sent at 2:59 pm local time, a minute earlier than previously publicised and lasted about 10 seconds. The authorities are hopeful that the new emergency service would get the public used to what the alerts look like so that they can be sent if the need arises during any future crisis.

“Keep Calm and Carry On” is a phrase that the British Ministry of Defence used during World War II. Its use to officially test the emergency alert system was also mentioned by newly crowned Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden who referred to it as the 'British way'.

“Whilst today’s 10-second national test may be inconvenient for some, please forgive the intrusion because the next time you hear the alert, your life and the lifesaving actions of our emergency services could depend on it,” said Alex Woodman, Chief Fire Officer for Hertfordshire and Resilience Lead on the National Fire Chiefs Council.

How is the alert sent?

Explaining how the alerts work, the authorities stated the emergency messages are broadcast via mobile phone masts to all 4G and 5G phone networks. Meaning, the sender of the alert does not need your number. No location or other data will be collected for the purpose either. During the pandemic, the government sent alerts using SMS, directly to phone numbers.

Anyone in the range of the mast gets the alert and it can be fine-tuned based on geography. A Liverpool resident would not be sent the alert for an earthquake that poses danger, say in London.

Moreover, those not wanting to receive the alerts can simply opt out by going into the device settings or switching off their phones or keeping them in flight mode.

A new study has found that anti-Hindu hate is quite prevalent in British schools. The report titled 'Anti-Hindu Hate in Schools' stands out at the time when a Hindu, Rishi Sunak, is the prime minister of the country.

UK-based counter-terrorism think-tank Henry Jackson Society released a report on the study on Wednesday (April 19). It stated that 51 per cent of Hindu parents surveyed reported that their child had suffered anti-Hindu hate at school.

Teaching Hinduism was reported by some participants of the study as fostering religious discrimination towards Hindu pupils.

It mentioned that incidents such as Hindu pupils being bullied to convert to Islam, beef being thrown at another student, etc are among some examples that have been recorded and were faced by Hindu students.
