"The ODI World Cup is played after every four years and this can be my last opportunity to be a part of it. So I need to do well in IPL and make a comeback in ODI format," said the fast bowler in an interview with media outlet Aaj Tak.

Speaking on why he think this could be his last chance to play in the world cup, Umesh added, "As I said the World Cup comes after every four years and I'm not sure if I'll be around then. Hence I want to make this season count and not wait for another four years."

He gives us option to use upfront with the new ball, swings the ball, bowls fast so not a much debate about him," Rohit had said.

The trio of pacer Umesh Yadav, batter Shreyas Iyer and all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed was on Wednesday added to India's squad for the three-match T20 series against South Africa, starting here.

Senior pacer Mohammad Shami, who had missed the recently-concluded T20 series against Australia after contracting COVID-19 infection, is yet to recover completely and thus won't be a part of the T20 matches against the Proteas.

Deepak Hooda has also been ruled out of the series owing to a back injury. The all-rounder is at the NCA for "further management of his injury".

"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Umesh Yadav as Shami's replacement and Shreyas Iyer as a replacement for Hooda," a BCCI release stated.

"Shahbaz Ahmed has also been added to the T20I squad," it added.

Umesh was brought in as Shami's replacement in the series against Australia. He has competed in the series-opener but did not play the second and third T20Is.

On the other hand, left-arm spin-all-rounder Shahbaz is still uncapped. He was picked in the Indian ODI squad as Washington Sundar's replacement for the Zimbabwe series in August but did not get a game.

Rookie pacer Arshdeep Singh, who was rested for the series against Australia, has linked up with the squad for the three T20Is.

Umesh picked up 18 wickets in the tournament to help India reach the semi-finals. However, he soon was dropped from the white-ball sides and was labelled a red-ball specialist by many.

Umesh said it was difficult for him to come to terms with the fact that he was dropped from India's white-ball teams despite his splendid performances during the 2015 ODI World Cup. The 34-year-old also struggled in the IPL over the last couple of years but has bounced back well this year.

Umesh Yadav continued his dream run with a four-wicket haul before Andre Russell returned to his brutal best to fire Kolkata Knight Riders to an easy six-wicket win over Punjab Kings here on Friday.

The two senior players have been under the radar for quite sometime, owing to their poor scores in the red-ball format.
