Toughening its stand on road safety, the UK government has said that drivers will be banned from using handheld devices for searching photos, listening to music or playing games from next year.

The government said that if found guilty, the drivers would be fined £200 and six licence points, which means that repeated offence would lead to suspension of license for six months and even revocation in the worst case scenario.

The government had already barred drivers to call or text on hand-held phones while driving unless it is an emergency.

Motorists will still be allowed to use hands-free devices while driving, such as navigation devices or mobile phone, if is secured in a cradle.

The Department for Transport has announced it is planning to strengthen laws from next year to make it easier to prosecute drivers using and holding their phones at the wheel.

The crackdown on mobile phones comes after a public consultation that found 81% of respondents supported proposals to strengthen the law, according to the Guardian.

The UK is paying over $800,000 to hide diaries and letters of Lord and Lady Mountbatten. What was written in them? What did Mountbatten pen down in his diary? Did he mention Nehru? Gandhi? or Jinnah? Palki Sharma tells you.

Gravitas: Why is UK hiding the Mountbatten papers?

What is the cost of keeping a secret? The UK government is paying 600,000 pounds (around $800,000) for the same purpose.

The secret: Diaries of Lord Mountbatten and his wife Lady Mountbatten, and some correspondence between the two.

The UK government is trying to bury these papers, especially from the Partition years, and paying that amount in a court battle against British author Andrew Lownie, out of fear that it could damage the reputation of the British royal family, and jeopardise the relationships between UK, Pakistan and India.

Mountbatten was the great-grandson of Queen Victoria. He was a royalist and like every proud royalist, he went on to serve the Royal Navy.

He commanded the Navy during World War II and held various positions in the British Raj. He also became the last viceroy of India.

It was in Delhi in 1922 that Mountbatten met a young woman, Edwina. They then decided to get married, which allegedly had many ups and downs.

It was claimed that the two had affair with other people.

The Mountbatten couple’s marriage was no secret by the way. So, what is that the British government is trying to hide?

One of Lady Mountbatten’s close friends was Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister.

In one of her letters to Nehru, to which WION has access, it was written, “I hate to see you driving away this morning. You left me with a strange sense of peace. Perhaps, I have brought you the same?”

“Life is a dreary business,” replied Nehru.

The Mountbatten papers are a treasure trove. There is history and reportedly a lot of scandals.

So, a few years back, when Lownie asked for unrestricted access to these papers, the government refused to oblige him.

But Lownie didn’t take no for an answer. He cited British’s Freedom of Information law and forced the government to release the Mountbatten papers, at least 99.8 per cent of them, while refusing to disclose the rest of them.

The unreleased papers reportedly document the years from 1947 and 1948, including the diaries of Lord and Lady Mountbatten and some correspondence between the two.

This couple had the habit of putting unfiltered thoughts to paper. Both maintained diaries, both poured their hearts out in letters.

This is what Lord Mountbatten wrote to his wife in 1942: “Edwina darlingest, I feel terribly having had to desert you twice during the most trying week of life. I am afraid, as I once told you before, you shouldn’t have married a sailor. I am not particularly fond of saying nice things and I can’t hope to compete with most of your other admirers. But this I felt that I must say that I thought you were really grand and very sweet & lovable.”

Mountbatten had overseen India’s partition. His diaries could reveal details that Britain is not comfortable sharing. They may have Mountbatten’s view of Nehru, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, Mahatma Gandhi and Sir Cyril Radcliffe, the man who drew the boundary between India and Pakistan.

Mountbatten, a very influential member of the Royal family, was a maternal uncle of Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip.

He was like a father figure to the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, the two were very close. Mountbatten is believed to have played a very big role in Prince Charles’ personal life, be it his affair with the then-girlfriend Camila Parker Bowles or his marriage with Diana.

The Royal Family lovingly called Mountbatten “Uncle Dicky”. They knew about his habit of maintaining a dairy. They too had their documents.

But who in the family would have thought that Uncle Dicky’s diary would once day start draining public coffers? So far, the UK govt has spent $800,000 in protecting them, trying to hide Mountbatten’s thoughts from the world.

Right now, a trial is underway in London which will determine whether all of the private diaries and letters of the should be released to the public despite concerns by the UK cabinet office.

UK is paying $800,000 to hide Mountbatten diaries, but why?

Bibba Thompson and the 75 older adults who live around her in a local government housing community in northern England do not look like revolutionaries.

But they are cheerfully taking part in a home energy trial that is billed by organizers as part of a new “green industrial revolution,” one they hope will put their little community at the forefront of global energy changes for the second time in three centuries.

Since August, Thompson, 58, and her neighbours in the hilltop village of Winlaton, outside Newcastle, have had their gas heaters and stoves fueled by a blend that includes up to 20% hydrogen. The reason? To reduce the climate-warming gases, like carbon dioxide, that are emitted by their appliances.

As the host of the United Nations climate talks in Glasgow, Scotland, the British government has committed to one of the world’s most ambitious emission reduction targets, pledging to slash greenhouse gases by 78% by 2035. Home heating is one of the areas where it has to match its promises with action.

Trials in Australia and elsewhere have experimented with lower levels of hydrogen in the fuel blend, and the Netherlands allows blends of up to 12%, but the gas network operators organizing the 670-home Winlaton trial say this is the first time a 20% hydrogen blend has been put into an existing gas grid with normal gas appliances.

The firms argue that it is an important step toward reducing Britain’s greenhouse gas emissions, and they hope it will encourage the eventual use of 100% hydrogen in the home heaters that the government says account for about 14% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions.

With the government concentrating on supporting the use of hydrogen for industrial customers rather than home heating, the gas companies are desperate for their huge pipe networks to retain a central role in the nation’s heating, and part of their strategy is to convince the public that switching to hydrogen would be clean, easy, cheap and safe.

“A few people were dubious at first about ‘Is my boiler going to blow up?’ but it has all gone well and they are quite chuffed with it now,” said Thompson, who lives on site and manages the 55-unit complex for people over 65.

“The older ones think that cleaning up the environment is great for their grandkids, and it really strikes a chord here because of our history,” she said. “We might be just a little village but we have got a big coal heritage.”

Winlaton did indeed play a big role in the era that first unleashed fossil fuels on a mass scale.

A few hundred meters from Thompson’s housing project, just behind the library on Church Street, sits a 330-year-old forge, the last remnant of an operation that made Winlaton a crucial site in the Industrial Revolution.

The forge was part of an enterprise set up in 1691 by Ambrose Crowley that became the largest iron works in Europe, with hundreds of workers churning out nails and chains for the Royal Navy and other iron goods, including slave manacles for British colonies. That was years before the invention of the steam engine and other machines that are generally held to mark the start of the Industrial Revolution.

Val Scully, a trustee of the local heritage centre, said that Crowley’s key contribution was to pioneer mass production techniques and the creation of an industrial working class, who toiled side by side on weekly salaries. It was that system that allowed the inventions of the next decades to flourish and unleash the genie of coal power, a genie that much of the world is now desperately trying to put back in its bottle.

Tim Harwood, the head of hydrogen projects at Northern Gas Networks, a pipeline operator, said northeast England has a chance to be the home of “the next industrial revolution, a green one.”

The region is already an important focus of offshore wind energy and the government sees the industrial clusters around Newcastle and Hull as centers of what it hopes will be a conversion to clean-burning hydrogen.

Hydrogen’s lower calorific value means that rolling out a 20% blend to all natural gas customers would reduce their emissions from heating by 7%, trimming about 1% from total emissions in Britain. The big payoff would come with a switch to pure hydrogen, which could slice more than one-tenth off the nation’s emissions. But it would also require the installation of millions of new appliances — an enormous challenge.

Harwood said blending is “just a steppingstone and a way of stimulating the switch over to hydrogen.”

Many analysts and some government ministers doubt that the nation will be able to produce enough hydrogen in the foreseeable future to roll it out beyond heavy industries.

The challenges include getting the costs of production down quickly enough to reduce the subsidies needed to make hydrogen price-competitive and moving as quickly as possible from “blue hydrogen,” which is made with methane and requires the capture and underground storage of its own carbon emissions, to the cleaner “green hydrogen,” which needs more electricity to produce but has no carbon emissions.

The gas operators are trying to speed things up, and are keen not to be bypassed in the government’s drive to install the potentially cleaner electric heat pumps that are already popular in continental Europe.

“If you think about the 23 million customers in the U.K. that have a gas supply, we’re hoping to penetrate up to 16 million customers with hydrogen,” Harwood said.

“You couldn’t put a heat pump in most Winlaton homes,” he said, “because the housing stock is old, leaky and cold, and heat pumps don’t produce enough heat without special insulation.”

Current programs to upgrade the gas network by replacing metal pipes with hydrogen-ready plastic should be finished by the time enough hydrogen is being produced to consider switching heating to pure hydrogen, Harwood said, and the gas companies want the government to mandate as soon as possible that all new gas boilers must be capable of being converted to hydrogen.

The government has already announced plans for a “hydrogen village” trial in which about 2,000 properties will run on pure hydrogen from 2025, to be followed by a “hydrogen town” of up to 15,000 properties by 2030, but Harwood said the gas operators would prefer to see that schedule sped up.

Dave Tully, a 63-year-old former military police officer who lives in a two-bedroom terrace house in Winlaton, said he received leaflets about the 10-month trial and a free safety inspection of his appliances but he still felt “railroaded” into taking part.

“I think it was going to go ahead no matter what the public thought, but in the end, that’s probably fair enough,” he said. “It turns out it hasn’t changed the way our cooker or heater work at all and I suppose we have to do something about climate change, so this sort of thing is probably necessary.”

The hydrogen campaign in Winlaton has included invitations to two display homes, where locals can see that the 100% hydrogen stoves and heaters are the same size as existing gas appliances. The only noticeable difference is that the flame from the burners is orange rather than blue and has a broader “sunflower” shape to distribute the heat more widely, as hydrogen is lighter and its heat tends to rise more quickly.

Harwood said he hoped to see those new flames heating British cups of tea within a decade.

Pushing son in pram, woman runs fastest 10 km to enter Guinness Book of Records in UK

A female soldier in UK Queen Elizabeth's Household Cavalary appeared to faint ahead of Remembrance Sunday ceremony on November 14 (local time). The image of the soldier, dressed professionally in traditional military uniform at the time of a ceremony marked by tradition was a shocking site.

Onlookers could be seen casting bewildered glance at the fainted soldier. One of her comrade looked at his fainted colleague while another looked on.

It was not immediately clear why the female soldier fainted.

Soldiers in largely ceremonial units are often called for duty for traditional ceremonies attended by British royals. There are extremely strict rules governing the duties and conduct of these soldiers who sometimes even have to go without water. In some ceremonial units, if a soldier faints, other soldiers in the unit are not allowed to help him but carry on their duties.

UK Queen Elizabeth missed Remebrance Sunday service this year due to sprained back. A Buckingham Palace source was quoted by Reuters as saying that the sprain was unrelated to the unspecified ailment that caused the queen's hospital visit recently.

Remembrance Sunday ceremony is held on the nearest Sunday to Nov. 11 to mark the end of World War One. The sight of the queen at the event has been one of the defining images of her reign through the decades: head bowed, wearing black and displaying a red poppy.

WREATH LAYING

The royal family joins leading members of the government, overseas representatives, and military on Remembrance Sunday to lay wreaths in commemoration of those who lost their lives in conflict.

In recent years, the queen's son and heir, Prince Charles, has laid a wreath on her behalf while she watches from a balcony at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Charles, who turned 73 on Sunday, laid the wreath again this year, while his wife Camilla, along with Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, watched from the balcony.

Thousands of veterans later marched past the Cenotaph, led by the band of the Coldstream Guards.

The queen is the world's oldest and longest-reigning monarch. Since being advised to rest, she has missed events such as the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow and a festival to remember the nation's war dead on Saturday evening.

Researchers at the University of Leicester said they have come up with a “transformative” treatment — a vaccine that would cost only 15 euros (around US $6) per dose.

Experts said the new vaccine could enter clinical trials in humans within two years.

According to the scientists, the “groundbreaking” therapy works by preventing the formation of harmful deposits of protein in the brain linked to memory loss.

Alzheimer’s disease is thought to be caused by the abnormal build-up of proteins in and around brain cells.

One of the proteins involved is called amyloid, deposits of which form plaques around brain cells. The other protein is called tau, deposits of which form tangles within brain cells.

The scientists have identified an antibody – called TAP01-04 – which binds to the shortened toxic form of amyloid beta, preventing the molecules clumping together to form plaques.

This antibody forms the basis of the promising new therapy. Trials on mice with Alzheimer's disease found the antibody helped to restore the function of brain cells as fewer plaques were formed, improving memory.

The scientists are working on a vaccine which triggers the body to generate TAP01-04 antibodies and could soon be offered to people at high risk of Alzheimer's.

The team said its revolutionary approach shows Alzheimer’s could be prevented rather than just treating plaques which have already formed.

Professor Mark Carr, from the University of Leicester, told Daily Mail, “While the science is currently still at an early stage, if these results were to be replicated in human clinical trials, then it could be transformative.”

“It opens up the possibility to not only treat Alzheimer's once symptoms are detected, but also to potentially vaccinate against the disease before symptoms appear,” he added.

Around 55 million people worldwide have dementia, with over 60% living in low- and middle-income countries, according to World Health Organisation.

Defending its student union's decision, a university in Britain said the training to students working in the adult sex work industry planned by the group is aimed at educating people about sex work and how to respond sensitively when someone discloses about the work in the industry.

Durham University, which is located in the city of Durham, England, added the training is not designed to encourage the students to enter the industry, but looks to destigmatise it.

A spokesperson of the university said, "We are emphatically not seeking to encourage sex work, but we are providing support to our students. We don’t judge. We listen, support and give practical help. We run many courses for students and staff on topics from mental health and well-being to drug and alcohol awareness."

The spokesperson added that eliminating the stigma related to this work can help students, who are vulnerable or at-risk, access "the support they need and to which they are entitled."

In an email, the Durham Student Union had recently advertised the training which laid out the union's stance on sex work and the importance of destigmatising it.

According to ‘Palatinate’, the university's student newspaper, the email read, “Student sex workers should not face any barriers to accessing support which is well informed and free from prejudice."

Mary Foy, Member of Parliament, Durham has also backed the decision of union. Foy said the university "consulted carefully before deciding to provide this support, engaging with student representatives, members of the university's sexual misconduct and violence operations group, equality, diversity, and inclusion unit, counselling and mental health service and safeguarding representatives.”

“This was not a decision made on a whim or to promote sex-work. The safety and well-being of students in Durham is paramount," Foy added.

The proposal has attracted backlash from Michelle Donelan, minister for higher and further education in Britain, who said, the training was an attempt to "normalise selling sex."

"I'm deeply concerned that any university is legitimising a dangerous industry which thrives on the exploitation of women. It is right that vital support is offered to women who are being exploited. However, this course seeks to normalise selling sex, which has no place in our universities," Donelan said.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth the Second will not be attending Remembrance service, Buckingham Palace said on Sunday. This was to be her first public appearance since resting on medical advice due to 'sprained back'.

"The Queen, having sprained her back, has decided this morning with great regret that she will not be able to attend today's Remembrance Sunday Service at the Cenotaph," the palace said in a statement.

"Her Majesty is disappointed that she will miss the service."

Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth's son will lay a wreath on her behalf.

The 95-year-old monarch was due to view the annual service in central London from a balcony, as she has done since 2017, when she handed over some of her duties to younger members of the family.

The service honouring fallen troops is close to the monarch's heart, and her absence will deepen concerns over her health after she stepped back from duties on medical advice and spent a night in hospital undergoing unspecified tests at the end of last month.

She then resumed "light duties", but pulled out of a scheduled attendance at the UN climate change summit in Glasgow after being advised to rest.

Charles and her grandson Prince William instead represented the family, making a series of speeches to delegates.

A two-day trip to Northern Ireland was also shelved.

UK is not corrupt, PM Johnson says as parliament engulfed in sleaze row. Boris Johnson has told the world’s media that Britain is not a corrupt country despite the controversy over Conservative MPs’ paid lobbying and other second jobs.

'Guilty should be punished,' UK PM Boris Johnson defends sleaze row

Following a report that said that Conservative Party lawmaker Geoffrey Cox earned more than 1 million pounds from a second job. This has deepened accusations of sleaze faced by the Tories led by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Geoffrey Cox, a lawyer and former attorney general, netted the lucrative sums for legal work while collecting his annual MP's salary of around £82,000 ($111,000, 96,000 euros), the Daily Mail said.

The additional pay, detailed in parliament's register of interests, came in part from advising the government of the British Virgin Islands, a UK overseas territory and tax haven accused of corruption, it added.

Cox also took benefit of the changes made in parliamentary attendance rules that were made during the pandemic to vote remotely in the House of Commons from the Caribbean while working there, the paper found.

Cox's office did not comment immediately.

Johnson's spokesman declined to discuss the case directly but said the British leader believes that "MPs' primary job is, and must be, to serve their constituents".

But he said Johnson "doesn't back an outright ban on second jobs", noting it could target lawmakers who also work as teachers, doctors and nurses.

The revelations intensify the pressure on Johnson, following days of criticism over sleaze and cronyism claims against his government which began with the botched handling of another Conservative lawmaker's case.

The UK leader sparked outrage last week when he tried to overhaul parliament's internal disciplinary process, which would have prevented the 30-day suspension of Owen Paterson.

Paterson was found to have committed an "egregious" rules breach, after repeatedly lobbying ministers and officials on behalf of two companies paying him more than £100,000 a year.

Although Johnson swiftly abandoned the unprecedented overhaul attempts -- prompting Paterson to resign from parliament -- it led to fierce criticism and threw the spotlight on a raft of allegations around MPs' behaviour.

The UK government said on Tuesday that all frontline workers of National Health Service (NHS) in England would have to be fully vaccinated by April 1 failing which they would lose their jobs.

"Having considered the... advice of my officials and NHS leaders including the chief executive of the NHS, I have concluded that all those working in the NHS and social care will have to be vaccinated," UK Health Minister Sajid Javid told the parliament on Tuesday.

The government had already announced that all care home workers will need to have had both jabs from November 11, but were waiting on the findings of a consultation before extending it to all NHS frontline staff.

"Our six-week consultation received over 34,000 responses," said Javid.

"The scales clearly tip to one side. I'm mindful of not only our need to protect human life but the imperative to protect the NHS," he added.

"The weight of the data shows our vaccinations have kept people safe and they have saved lives and that this is especially true for vulnerable people in health and care settings."

The mandate from the UK government has come at a time when publicly funded NHS faces huge waiting list due to a dramatic reduction in appointments during the pandemic.

NHS is funded from general taxation and National Insurance contributions. It is Europe's biggest employer and one of the biggest in the world, with about 1.3 million staff.

Around 90 percent of NHS staff have received at least two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, although the figure is closer to 80 percent in some areas, said Javid.

This means there are around 80,000 to 100,000 NHS workers in England who are unvaccinated, raising fears about how the service will cope if they lose their jobs.

"The NHS is under the most intense pressure this winter already, we know the waiting lists are at close to 6 million," said Labour's health spokesman Jonathan Ashworth.

"There will be anxiety... that a policy, however laudable in principle, could exacerbate some of these chronic understaffing problems.

"We simply cannot afford to lose thousands of NHS staff overnight," he added.

Many of us give up our hobbies once professional life begins. But as a nurse in the UK found out, our hobbies sometimes make us strike gold, quite literally.

Buffy Bailey, a nurse working with UK's National Health Service was using a metal detector in a field in York, UK when it started buzzing. On digging the surface, she found a very small golden piece which she took to be an everyday object probably bought by someone from a gift shop.

The small piece however, felt heavier for its size and exquisite artistry on it did appear to set it apart from curios on sale in a gift shop.

It turned out that the small piece was made of gold. It was a bible made in gold. And to top it all, it may have been owned by the medieval aristocracy or even royalty.

The gold bible was found on land near to a property once owned by Richard the Third, a King of England who ruled in 15th century.

As per news reports, the gold bible weighs 5 grams and is either 22 or 24-carat gold.

The discovery of the gold Bible is being compared to that of Middleham jewel, a gold pendant set with a blue sapphire.

The gold bible is currently being assessed by the Yorkshire Museum in York. But it is estimated that value of the Bible would exceed USD 1.3 million.

The UK government is looking forward to implementing travel restrictions on people who do not take up the booster shot. As per official figures, 10,062,704 people in the UK have received a booster jab. Nearly 30 per cent of people aged over-80 and more than 60 per cent of people aged 50 and more are still in the queue to receive extra doses.

The official guidelines for this month stated that the government was “reviewing the implications and requirements of boosters for international travel certification” and “looking at whether and how booster vaccinations could be included in the NHS Covid pass for travel."

COP26 summit has entered its final week, and while speaking to world leaders, UK PM Boris Johnson urged the countries to "make the bold compromises and ambitious commitments needed."

Johnson said that the ministers and negotiators at COP26 should "pull together and drive for the line" to make sure that the climate change plan is accomplished.

“There is one week left for COP26 to deliver for the world, and we must all pull together and drive for the line. We have seen nations bring ambition and action to help limit rising temperatures, with new pledges to cut carbon and methane emissions, end deforestation, phase out coal and provide more finance to countries most vulnerable to climate change. But we cannot underestimate the task at hand to keep 1.5C alive," said Johnson.

Meanwhile, demonstrators began gathering on Saturday morning in a park near the COP26 summit venue, chanting: "Our world is under attack, stand up fight back!"

Delegates from nearly 200 countries are in Glasgow to figure out a way to meet the Paris Agreement goals of limiting temperature rises to between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius.

At the summit, some countries have upgraded their existing pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while there have been separate deals on phasing out coal. Countries have also pledged to end foreign fossil fuel funding, and slash methane.

A major assessment last week showed global CO2 emissions were set to rebound in 2021 to pre-pandemic levels.
Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg said the summit had gone nowhere near far enough at Friday's youth march in Glasgow, where she labelled the conference "a failure".
